Abstract:
TiO2(B) nanowires were prepared at 170 °C, 200 °C and 220 °C for 24 h via hydrothermal synthesis to evaluate the effect of temperature on phase composition and morphologies. The effect of reaction time: 24 and 72 h on the formation was also studied at 170 °C. All samples were calcined in air at 400 °C for 2 h. Phase identification was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and morphologies was examined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that hydrothermal temperature and time played an important role in defining TiO2phase composition and its morphology. For 24 h hydrothermal synthesis, at low temperature of 170 °C, anatase TiO2nanoparticles were formed, while at higher temperature of 200 and 220 °C, TiO2(B) nanowires with averaged diameter of 49 nm and several micrometers in length were produced. Interestingly at 170 °C, by increasing reaction time to 72 h, anatase TiO2nanoparticles were completely transformed to TiO2(B) nanowires with averaged diameter of 74 nm and 2-4 micrometers in length.

Abstract:
Abstract The c-Myb transcription factor is abundantly expressed during B cell development and is down regulated as the cells mature. We targeted Myb in mice with loxP sites (Mybf/f). By crossing these mice to other strains that direct Cre expression to different stages of B cell development (Rag1-cre, Mb1-cre, CD19-cre) we are able to assess subsequent B-lineage maturation. In Mybf/f Mb1-cre mice, c-Myb is required for B cell differentiation beyond the pre-pro-B cell stage and survival of CD19+ pro-B cells. c-Myb controls survival of pro-B cells by suppression of the proapoptotic factors Bmf and Bim. We find that IL-7 signaling represses the expression of Bmf and Bim. c-Myb controls the expression of CD127 but forced expression of CD127 is not sufficient to repress Bmf and Bim or rescue survival of c-Myb deficient pro-B cells. Examination of negative mediators of IL-7 signaling revealed increased SOCS3 mRNA in c-Myb deficient pro-B cells and forced expression of SOCS3 suppressed proliferation and survival of CD19+ pro-B cells in the presence of IL-7. Surprisingly, Mybf/f CD19-cre Bcl2-Tg mice contain severely reduced large and small pre-B cell compartments. Examination of mRNA expression in these cells revealed that c-Myb controls expression of key regulators of the pre-BCR checkpoint, including CD127, lambda-5, cyclin D3 and Cxcr4. c-Myb coordinates survival in pro-B cells with the expression of key components of the signaling pathways that drive the pro-B to pre-B cell transition.

Abstract:
This phase 1 trial (NCT01938846) determined the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of the mTOR serine/threonine kinase inhibitor, BI 860585, as monotherapy and with exemestane or paclitaxel in patients with advanced solid tumors. This 3+3 dose-escalation study assessed BI 860585 monotherapy (5–300 mg/day; Arm A), BI 860585 (40–220 mg/day; Arm B) with 25 mg/day exemestane, and BI 860585 (80–220 mg/day; Arm C) with 60–80 mg/m2/week paclitaxel, in 28-day cycles. Primary endpoints were the number of patients with dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs) in cycle 1 and the MTD. Forty-one, 25, and 24 patients were treated (Arms A, B, and C). DLTs were observed in four (rash (n = 2), elevated alanine aminotransferase/aspartate aminotransferase, diarrhea), four (rash (n = 3), stomatitis, and increased gamma-glutamyl transferase), and two (diarrhea, increased blood creatine phosphokinase) patients in cycle 1. The BI 860585 MTD was 220 mg/day (Arm A) and 160 mg/day (Arms B and C). Nine patients achieved an objective response (Arm B: Four partial responses (PRs); Arm C: Four PRs; one complete response). The disease control rate was 20%, 28%, and 58% (Arms A, B, and C). The most frequent treatment-related adverse events (AEs) were hyperglycemia (54%) and diarrhea (39%) (Arm A); diarrhea (40%) and stomatitis (40%) (Arm B); fatigue (58%) and diarrhea (58%) (Arm C). The MTD was determined in all arms. Antitumor activity was observed with BI 860585 monotherapy and in combination with exemestane or paclitaxel.

Abstract:
Abstract Human B cell line .220 has a novel defect in HLA class I cell surface expression. Mutant .220 was derived from .184TGr, from which both copies of HLA-A and -B are deleted, and has less surface HLA-C than .184TGr. Transfer of class I genes into .220 revealed allele-specific reductions in surface expression: HLA-A1 and -B8 were 1 to 21% of normal; HLA-A11, -A24, and -B5 were moderately reduced; and HLA-A2, -A3, and -B7 were reduced little, if at all. Class I mRNA in .220(A1) and .220(B8) transferents is normal in size and at least normal in quantity. Surface expression of class I molecules was restored by fusing .220 transferents with mutant .174, which lacks the TAP-1 and -2 genes needed for transport of class I-binding peptides. Fusion of .220(A1) cells with beta 2-microglobulin-deficient Daudi cells also fully restored surface expression of class I molecules encoded by both parental cells, indicating beta 2-microglobulin is functional in .220. Pulse-chase experiments showed transgene-encoded HLA-A1 and -B8 alpha-chains are made in apparently normal amounts and associate with beta 2-microglobulin in .220. However, post-translational processing of the HLA-A1 and -B8 molecules is retarded in or before the Golgi apparatus, and immunoprecipitable HLA-A1 molecules disappear after their synthesis. The effects of these abnormalities on surface expression of class I molecules were reversed by incubating .220(A1) and .220(B8) cells at 21 degrees C, which greatly increased the amounts of cell surface HLA-A1 and -B8.

Abstract:
Color changes were tested and compared for heat-treated Paulownia tomentosa and Pinus koraiensis wood treated with hot oil or hot air for further utilization of these species. Hot oil and hot air treatments were conducted at 180, 200, and 220 °C for 1, 2, and 3 h. Heat-treated wood color changes were determined using the CIE-Lab color system. Weight changes of the wood before and after heat treatment were also determined. The weight of the oil heat-treated wood increased considerably but it decreased in air heat-treated wood. The oil heat-treated samples showed a greater decrease in lightness (L*) than air heat-treated samples. A significant change in L* was observed in Paulownia tomentosa. The red/green chromaticity (a*) of both wood samples increased at 180 and 200 °C and slightly decreased at 220 °C. The yellow/blue chromaticity (b*) in both wood samples increased at 180 °C, but it rapidly decreased with increasing treatment durations at 200 and 220 °C. The overall color change (ΔE*) in both heat treatments increased with increasing temperature, being higher in Paulownia tomentosa than in Pinus koraiensis. In conclusion, oil heat treatment reduced treatment duration and was a more effective method than air heat treatment in improving wood color.

Abstract:
2557 Background: PICN is a novel Cremaphor-free composite of paclitaxel nano-particles stabilized with polymer and lipid using Nanotecton Technology. The MTD of PICN alone was previously determined to be 295 mg/m2 iv every 3 weeks in a South Asian population. This study aimed to determine the pharmacokinetic (PK) profile of PICN alone and with carboplatin (C), and the MTD of PICN plus C. Methods: Patients (pt) with advanced solid malignancies and ECOG PS 0-1 were eligible. Part A was a PK study designed to examine cohorts of 3 pts, receiving PICN over 30 min at dose levels of 175, 260, and 295 mg/m2 every 3 weeks; PK were performed at pre-determined time-points. Part B used a ‘3+3’ dose escalation scheme, designed to determine the MTD of PICN (220, 260, and 295 mg/m2) when combined with C at AUC 6. Only standard anti-emetic pre-medications were used. Adverse events (AEs) were graded using CTCAE 4.0 and tumor response by RECIST 1.1. Results: A total of 18 evaluable pts (9 in Part A, 9 in Part B) were enrolled from 2 US academic centers. No infusion reactions were observed with PICN. No dose limiting toxicity (DLT) was observed in Part A. In Part B, the DLTs were G3 febrile neutropenia and G4 thrombocytopenia requiring platelet transfusion at PICN 260/C AUC 6. A total of 6 pts were treated at PICN 220/C AUC 6 with no DLT. G3 or worse AEs for all cycles were as follow: Part A, bilateral lower extremity weakness, neuropathy, anorexia and neutropenia; Part B, anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia and empyema. Partial responses were observed in biliary(Part A; PICN 260 mg/m2), breast (Part B 220/6) and anal cancers (Part B 260/6). PK analysis showed dose-proportional increase in total plasma paclitaxel level. Conclusions: PICN alone was tolerable in the dose range evaluated. When administered with C AUC 6, the MTD of PICN was 220 mg/m2 administered every 3 weeks. Anti-cancer activity was observed in biliary, breast, and anal cancers. Final PK, toxicity and efficacy data of PICN alone and with C will be presented at the conference. Clinical trial information: NCT01304303.

"The reaction of some endo-5-acetyl norborn-2-enes with benzene thiol: a thermally induced non-allylic [1,3]-acetyl shift, as anticipated by a photochemical precedent." Canadian Journal of Chemistry 73, no. 11 (November 1, 1995): 1785–93. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/v95-220.

Full text
Abstract:
The thermal reaction of benzene thiol with rac-1-(4aS*,5R*,8S*,8aR*-5,8-methano-1,2,3,4,4a,5,8,8a-octahydro-4a-naphthyl)ethanone (10b), an endo-5-acetylnorborn-2-ene with a particularly close distance between one olefinic carbon and the keto carbon, and with its 8aS* epimer 10a, has been investigated. Besides the conventional unrearranged adducts 16a, b and 17a, b of the thiol to the C=C bonds of 10a, b, an adduct 18 was formed from 10b that involved a [1,3]-acetyl shift; no other products were formed. The dependence of adduct ratios on thiol concentration is consistent with two competing reactions of an intermediate radical 14b formed by addition of thiyl radical to the C=C bond of 10b, namely, abstraction of hydrogen from thiol (which is the conventional reaction path) vs. intramolecular attack of the radical on the keto group inducing the [1,3] shift of the latter. This shift constitutes an intramolecular variety of the known alkyl transposition reaction of ketones initiated by a reversible attack of an alkyl radical on a keto carbonyl group to generate an intermediate tert-alkoxyl radical; however, it is very much faster than the intermolecular reaction and corresponds to an effective molarity between 107 and 1010. These findings have a bearing on the mechanism of photorearrangements homologous to the ODPM (oxa-di-π-methane) photorearrangement, such as ODPE (oxa-di-π-ethane) and higher homologues, in that they support a two-step mechanism involving this type of acyl shift. Keywords: oxadi-π-methane photorearrangement; oxadi-π-ethane photorearrangement; acetyl shift, non-allylic [1,3]; thiol, addition to C=C bonds; norbornenes.

White button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus L.) was subjected to osmotic dehydration at different concentrations of common salt (sodium chloride) i.e. 10, 15, 20 and 25% and sugar solution i. e. 50, 60 and 70°B and dried in hot-air oven at 55 ± 2 °C. There were about 31.2, 29.4, 27.2 and 24.4% reduction in weight with 10, 15, 20 and 25% salt solutions and 35.4, 38.3 and 38.8% with 50, 60 and 70°B sugar solution respectively. It took about 240, 220, 200 and 180 minutes to dry samples after osmotic treatment with 10, 15, 20 and 25% salt concentration and 240, 220 and 220 minutes with 50, 60 and 70°B sugar solution respectively. The untreated samples took about 340 minutes for complete drying. The colour was brighter for samples dried after OT with 25% salt and 70°B sugar concentrations having lowest optical density (OD) values. The dried products were packed in 200 gauge polypropylene bags and stored at ambient condition for one year. The chemical, microbial and organoleptic changes were monitored for one year. Storage study showed that there was marginal increase in moisture content and decrease in organoleptic quality of osmoa-air dried (OAD) mushroom slices. The samples dried after osmosis with 25% salt and 70°B sugar concentrations were found microbiologically safe and organoleptically acceptable up to one year of storage at ambient condition.

The consumption of synthetic drugs has increased, these new synthetic derivatives are structural analogs of N-substituted phenylethylamine, and this group has caused severe cases of poisoning and even death probably in several users. In Chile these drugs are mainly represented as three derivatives known as 25-I- NBOMe, 25-C-NBOMe and 25-B-NBOMe, and have displaced the LSD as the main hallucinogen consumed without know the concentration of active substances in each dose yet. In these work two analytical methodologies for the determination of NBOMes compounds in seized blotters in Chile are developed; these techniques are instrumental planar chromatography HPTLC and gas chromatography with mass detector GC / MS as alternatives with easy handling and cost. These methods proved to be robust and reliable for the intended purpose and once the implemented methods were validated, we analyzed real samples of blotters, where more than 90% of the total was identified as 25-C-NBOMe in a wide range of concentration. Subsequently we implemented and validated a methodology for the detection of the main component found in blotters (25-C-NBOMe) but for analysis of urine as diagnosis of acute poisoning. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about chemical composition of blotters with NBOMe derivatives using the techniques developed in this work

Kemble, Roger. "Urban design requirements, B. C. Place Vancouver, B. C." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26852.

Full text
Abstract:
A new set of urban design requirements is proposed to replace the current urban design guidelines for the B. C. Place site in Vancouver, B. C. The site is 90.6 hectares of open area, contiguous to the downtown, it is the subject of extensive planning activities. The site has been chosen because it is free of most of the typical impediments that constrain urban planning in more congested areas of the city. Accordingly, a new way of expressing urban space is appropriate. To be valid urban design requirements must be conceived with a purpose in mind. The purpose, here, is the essential element of urban design, a shared vision of urban space. It must define, within a broad public consensus, a set of urban design requirements communicating, over an extended time period, a consistent vision of urban space. Six urban design requirements are set out to implement a shared vision of urban space. They have been reduced to a minimum to provide as much freedom of expression to the design professions as possible. They are under six headings: Interim Land Use, Site Development, Physical Form and Design, Environment, Occupancy, and Movement. Pivotal in the composition of the urban design requirements is an instrument called the Orthodox Surface Modulator, augmented by a Check List of architectural design elements. Together they become a metaphoric framework of reference, a part of the creative process within the development control system. The Orthodox Surface Modulator, as it is applied, describes the volumetric forms of building envelopes and the public urban spaces between buildings. It describes buildings and spaces to enhance public amenity. It may, under specific environmental circumstances, mitigate undesirable site conditions by describing building envelopes as buffer buildings, shielding passive urban space from noise and distractions. Urban Space is discussed. A Shared Vision of Urban Space, how it is evolved by public discourse, and a proposed Theory of Urban Space is explained. A critique of current urban development on Burrard Street, Vancouver, between Georgia Street and the waterfront explains why the present urban design guidelines, transfer of development rights and bonusing, have failed to produce the intended urban spatial amenity. Urban design requirements are not a new phenomenon. Only since the early 1970s have they taken on their present complex form in the City of Vancouver. A brief historic outline traces the antecedents of the proposed urban design requirements, placing them in context from early Greek attempts to rationalize optical distortion to the present day. The proposed application of the six urban design requirements and the Surface Modulator would be mandatory. The manner in which the elements of the Check List are integrated into the matrix of the Surface Modulator is proposed to be discretionary. The complete set of urban design requirements are intended to be used in a negotiating procedure common in planning practice.

Klaus, Stephen J. "Analysis of B Cell Immediate Early Gene Expression in Response to Contact Dependent T Cell Help and Anti-immunoglobulins: a Thesis." eScholarship@UMMS, 1991. http://escholarship.umassmed.edu/gsbs_diss/220.

Full text
Abstract:
B cells get help in the antibody response by presenting processed antigen to helper T cells. We asked whether the antigen presenting B cell must induce T helper functions before receiving help, or whether B cell activation is a direct consequence of T cell antigen recognition on the B cell surface. Although antigen-dependent increases in B cell c-myc expression occur as early as two hours after conjugation, the B cell response depends on induction of a contact-dependent helper function in the T cell, which is inhibitable by cyclosporin A. Induction but not delivery of contact help is blocked by anti-class II MHC antibody, indicating that the delivery of T cell help is not Ag dependent or MHC restricted. Also, contact with activated helper T cells induces a different pattern of immediate early gene expression from signals transduced through the B cell antigen receptor. Egr-1 is rapidly upregulated in response to mitogenic signals induced by receptor crosslinking on murine B lymphocytes, and its expression closely correlates with B cell proliferation in several models of B cell activation and tolerance. We compared egr-1 expression during B cell stimulation with Fab'2 and IgG anti-Ig, since it is known that Fab'2 anti-Ig is mitogenic while IgG is not, due to a dominant inhibitory effect of crosslinking the B cell FcγRII to membrane Ig. While mitogenic doses of Fab'2 anti-Ig induce large and rapid increases in egr-1 expression, intact anti-Ig results in only small increases in egr-1 mRNA, comparable to that seen with submitogenic concentrations of Fab'2 anti-Ig. However, when IL-4 is added as a comitogen to induce B cell proliferation with submitogenic concentrations of Fab'2 anti-Ig or IgG anti-Ig, no concomitant increases in egr-1 are observed. The regulation of egr-1 therefore, is similar to that of c-myc in this system, since neither correlates with IL-4 induced DNA synthesis.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the ancient reception of the Categories of Aristotle, a work which served continuously, from late antiquity into the early modern period (Frede 1987), as the student’s introduction to philosophy.  There had previously been no comprehensive study of the reception of the Categories during the age of the first philosophical commentaries (c. 80 BC to AD 220). In this study, I have collected, assigned, and analyzed the relevant fragments of commentary belonging to this period, including some that were previously undocumented or inexplicit in the source texts, and sought to establish and characterize the influence of the early commentators’ activity on the subsequent Peripatetic tradition. In particular, I trace the early evolution of criticism and defense of the text through competing accounts of its aim (skopos), which would ultimately lead Stoic and Platonic philosophers to a partial acceptance of the Categories and frame its role in the later Neo-Platonic curriculum.

Abstract:
The main objective of this research is to determine the factors from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) that significantly affect online purchase intention in the clothing industry of young people born between the years 1994 and 2000 that belong to the A, B, and C socioeconomic status of Metropolitan Lima during 2020. As part of the research, the definition of e-commerce, its evolution at global and national level, the clothing industry in Peru and the characteristics of Metropolitan Lima’s Generation Y will be presented. Likewise, the different theories of the Adoption Technologies Models will be developed as a theoretical basis. A quantitative study, descriptive research and non-experimental transectional design were used. Data collection was carried out through a survey applied to a sample of 384 young people belonging to the target group and, based on the results obtained and using the SPSS tool, both a descriptive and a factorial analysis were performed . It was verified that the TPB factors do influence the online purchase intention of the target group studied in the clothing category.

Abstract:
The Southern Nevada Water Authority contracted with Amonix, Inc. in 2008 to procure 220 kWdc of their latest generation multi-junction cell High Concentration Photovoltaic systems (HCPV). This paper discusses the performance of the six HCPV systems that started operating in mid 2009. Data sets included show: a. Daily power performance; b. Power performance compared to the specified performance; c. Effect of field shading upon the daily power performance. What is demonstrated is the system power performance has not degraded during this initial period of operation and continues to meet or exceed the specified performance levels.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, induction plasma spray processing is used to produce free-standing-parts of molybdenum silicide-B composition, the boron, and molybdenum silicide powders being blended to form the initial spray powders. The oxidation resistance for each of these composites is compared to those of molybdenum silicide and molybdenum disilicide plasma spray deposits, produced under identical conditions. The results indicated that the 2.0 wt% boron sample had excellent oxidation resistance and showed a mass change of almost zero after 24 hours of high temperature oxidation (1210 deg C). Abstract:

Abstract:
In the last 20 years, social accountability initiatives have facilitated the inclusion and participation of marginalised groups in governance processes. This Policy Briefing focuses on how and what factors prove effective in strengthening women’s voice in processes holding public service providers accountable. We argue that initiatives must: (a) build technical and other forms of capacity amongst women; (b) change formal rules on women’s inclusion; (c) apply political economy analysis to unpack power dynamics, identify actors in favour of gender equality, and build a network in support of women; and (d) make long-term funding commitments for sustainable change in gender-biased norms.
