Abstract:
This chapter studies calculative risk-assessment practices in credit rating agencies. It identifies two fundamentally different methodological approaches for producing ratings, which in turn shape the respective conceptions of credit risk. The traditional approach sees ‘risk’ as an only partially calculable and predictable set of hazards that should be avoided or minimized. This approach is particularly evident in the production of country credit ratings and gives rise to ordinal rankings of risk. By contrast, structured finance rating practices conceive of ‘risk’ as both fully calculable and

Literary works since the rise of high modernism have been intensely hostile to abstract generalization, and have focused attention on the unique experience and singular expression. This nominalist impulse—summed up in the cry “show, don’t tell!”—has encouraged a deep wariness toward broad normative concepts: “good,” “bad,” “courage,” “justice,” etc. More than is often recognized, however, this literary skepticism parallels the skepticism toward such concepts in the natural sciences, which accords no place to such abstract “high words” in a world of matter and calculable motions. Abstract:
The key to market risk is the calculation of position risk requirement (PRR). Basel 3 has radically changed the approach to the calculation of position risk for regulated firms, and this chapter deals with the ‘before and after’ element to it. A firm must calculate a PRR in respect of all its trading book positions, all foreign exchange positions, and all positions in commodities (including physical commodities) whether or not in the trading book. A firm must also be able to monitor its total PRR on an intra-day basis. The remainder of the chapter covers trading book eligibility under Basel 2.

Chapter 7 discusses comparing two groups, and covers graphical presentation of continuous unpaired data, the two-sample t test, and the Mann-Whitney U test. It describes the use of data transformations and how results are interpreted. It shows how to compare two proportions using the chi-squared test and how to report results as differences in proportions, relative risks, and odds ratios. It includes how to calculate 95% confidence intervals for estimates. Finally, the chapter discusses the reasons for and consequences of dichotomization of continuous data and a method for dichotomization with

Burns injuries are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children. A significant burn injury affects every major organ system of the body. Initial management focuses on resuscitation along the ABCDE approach, with particular vigilance for the possibility of airway burn causing progressive edema and narrowing. Smoke inhalation is associated with carbon monoxide poisoning and possible cyanide toxicity. Fluid management depends on accurate estimation on the extent of the burn and use of a formula to calculate infusion rate, with careful monitoring of end-organ perfusion. Significant burn

Abstract:
Corruption vulnerabilities exist where government officials have power over the provision of goods and the imposition of costs. Building permits and infrastructure contracts are examples of state-issued goods. Traffic tickets and tax liabilities are examples of costs levied by the state. These and other corruption vulnerabilities turn to actual threats when officials calculate that the benefits of abusing their power are greater than the penalties associated with getting caught. By a similar logic, the formula for corruption control requires increasing the probability of detecting corruption (

The complex world of online piracy and peer-to-peer file sharing is skillfully condensed into an easy-to-understand guide that provides insight into the criminal justice approach to illegal file sharing, while offering guidance to parents and students who have concerns about potential legal action in response to file-sharing activities. While the actual impact of digital piracy is nearly impossible to precisely calculate, the threat of financial damage from illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing to the world's highest-grossing entertainment firms (and even entire industries!) has garnered att
