Full text
Abstract:
The secondary literature on Protestant scholasticism has undergone a seismic shift in recent years as scholars have moved away from the ‘Calvin against the Calvinists’ approach towards an approach that recognizes the importance of Reformed orthodox figures in their own context. One such figure is John Owen, who in his scholastic training at Oxford was exposed to the thought of Thomas Aquinas and the school of Thomism. Owen’s writings demonstrate a profound proficiency in Thomistic thought from his earliest writings until shortly before his death. Owen first of all demonstrates his debt to the

This thesis seeks to illustrate the substantial contribution which John Owen, Bishop of St. David's, made to the campaign against the disestablishment of the Anglican Church within Wales, and the foundation of the Church in Wales. Owen's significant contribution to this important period within Welsh ecclesiastical history has not been acknowledged. This thesis demonstrates that Owen played an invaluable role not only in opposing the various measures which sought to disestablish, disendow and dismember the Anglican Church, but also in preparing the Church for its new disestablished status follo

Abstract:
This comparison of the epigrams of Martial and Owen endeavours to assess whether the title of Martialis Redivivus, bestowed on Owen by scholars and critics as soon as his epigrams were first published, was justified. The comparison covers their lives, their literary output and problems of authorship against the background of life in the Roman Empire of the 1st century A.D. and the early Stuart period in England. Abstract:
This work explores the uses and understanding of the hermeneutical principle of the analogia fidei within early Protestantism, and particularly in the works of the seventeenth century Puritan John Owen. Through an introductory analysis of the literature, at large and more narrowly in relation to Owen, it is contended that much of the work on this subject has resulted in confusion and caricature leading to conflicting views of the principle, its constrained aspects, and its usage within post-Reformation Protestantism. By considering how Owen and other early Protestants regarded the var

The analysis is based on two axes of reflection. The first, theoretical, is discussed in chapter one and bears on three fundamental elements of the act of translation: the notion of the ethics of translation (which concerns, among other things, the question of

As one of seventeenth century England's premier Reformed theologians, John Owen drew upon his rich sixteenth century inheritance to develop a theology of the Eucharist which addressed the unique challenges of his own generation. The following thesis analyzes Owen's contribution to Reformed Sacramental theology during the era of Reformed Orthodoxy in England. Instead of capitulating to a highly subjective and pragmatic theology of the Supper, Owen went beyond many of his Puritan contemporaries in reasserting its objective efficacy in uniting the believer with the ascended Christ, and in str

This thesis is an attempt to remedy the neglect of John Owen's atonement theology despite wide acclaim for him as the leading representative of the Reformed doctrine of limited atonement. Its main proposition is that Owen's conception of Christ's priesthood in terms of Christ's united acts of oblation and intercession, performed in his twofold state of humiliation and exaltation, lies at the heart of his atonement theology. John Owen's (1616-1683) four-volume commentary on the epistle to the Hebrews represents the apex of his literary career and exemplifies many of the exegetical methods of the post-Reformation. This thesis is the first detailed analysis of his introductory discourses, or "exercitations," on Hebrews. Owen's exercitations on the Messiah in particular are an ideal source for this examination, since they serve as the prolegomena for his exposition proper. This study examines the relationship between scriptural authority and the life of faith in the prominent English Reformed orthodox theologian, John Owen. The thesis particularly seeks to show how Owen creatively drew upon an ‘ecumenical’ dogmatic and metaphysical heritage to restate and refine the traditional Reformed position on scriptural authority, sensit

By an examination of the principles of divine government, I argue that Owen employs the theme of God's “dominion” in order to establish the freedom and gratuity of God's grace, and to resist theologies that might otherwise use the doctrine of creation to

This dissertation focuses on the return and revitalization of traditional Christian themes in contemporary postmodern novels. It offers an examination of how these themes materialize in novels written by writers who are not explicitly religious, or in novels which do not have an overtly religious focus. Some contemporary novels generate a privileged space in which the return of the religious can take place. The sacred is back, not just as a re-enchantment, but manifests itself in fundamentally new and productive ways (Ward, 2001:xv). The first matter under consideration is the fact that the co
