Emerald ash borer (EAB) is an alien invasive species that is spreading across Canada and the United States killing ash trees. In riparian forests where ash may be abundant; loss of ash can induce significant structural changes; including the creation of canopy gaps; changes in light penetration; expansion of ground vegetation; and alteration of soil nitrogen and carbon cycling. In 2014 and 2015, we examined the effects of EAB-caused gaps in riparian forests on soil nutrient dynamics. Abstract We measured nest site selection and productivity of suburban-nesting Red-shouldered Hawks (Buteo lineatus) in southwestern Ohio and rural-nesting Red-shouldered Hawks in south-central Ohio. At both the suburban and the rural locations, nest sites had greater canopy height and overall tree basal area than paired random plots, and were located closer to water than were paired random plots. Nest trees also had greater diameter and height than random plot-center trees. Reproductive rates at suburban and rural sites were similar, averaging 2.6–3.1 nestlings per successful nest. Exotic invasive plants have become a significant issue in the Southeastern United States for private landowners. These plants possess characteristics that allow for rapid growth and easy adaptation to many growing conditions, often outcompeting native vegetation and altering wildlife habitat, especially in disturbed areas. Disturbance, including access roads, trails, harvest sites, powerline corridors, and fence rows, is common on private land. Private landowners are often left to combat these problems without many monetary or expertise resources that are available to federal lands. Three

Pudd‘nhead Wilson (1894) was Mark Twain‘s last serious work of fiction, and perhaps the only real novel that he ever produced. Written in a more sombre vein than his other Mississippi writings, the novel reveals the sinister forces that Mark Twain felt to be threatening the American dream. In spite of a plot which includes child swapping, palmistry, and a pair of Italian twins, this astringent work also raises the serious issue of racial differences. This volume also includes two other late works ‘Those Extraordinary Twins’ and ‘The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg’.

Abstract:
The final chapter examines the relationship between Machiavelli’s work and fifteenth-century literature on conspiracies. The analysis highlights the role that this humanist literature played in the development of Machiavelli’s complex theorization of conspiracies as a political phenomenon, but it also underlines how, although he was influenced by this background, he also radically departed from it. Machiavelli dealt with this political subject in several sections of his works: in particular in his long chapter Delle congiure in the Discorsi (III, 6), which can be considered a comprehensive treatise on plots; in chapter XIX of Il principe; and in some significant chapters of the Istorie fiorentine, where Machiavelli narrates the conspiracies that took place in Italy in the previous centuries. He was the first author to develop a substantial theorization of political plots and he based it on concrete historical examples drawn from previous narratives and from ancient history. Machiavelli’s analysis of conspiracies shares some key elements with the political perspective underlying fifteenth-century literature on plots: his focus on the figure of the prince as the main target of the conspiracy; the importance assigned to the role of the common people and to the issue of building political consensus; the attention paid to internal enemies and internal matters within the state, rather than to the relationship with foreign political forces; the evolution in the analytical approach regarding tyranny and tyrannicide; the centrality of the notion of crimen laesae maiestatis; the emphasis on the negative political outcome of plots.

Abstract:
The change in the Gibbs free energy function, ΔG, of chemical reaction is determined by the difference between the heats respectively released to and absorbed from the environment, and separation of the enthalpy and entropy changes that these changes represent cannot be achieved without specific hypotheses as to their relations. The determination of the enthalpy of reaction by the plot of ΔG/T against 1/T (van’t Hoff plot) implicitly assumes that the enthalpy ΔH and entropy ΔS are temperature independent, and this assumption leads to very large errors when this is not the case and ΔH « TΔS. It is therefore inapplicable to the reactions of molecules, such as proteins, that have thermally activated local motions. The concepts offered previously by the author to relate the entropy and enthalpy changes in protein associations are reviewed briefly and applied to account for the temperature dependence of ΔH and ΔS. It is shown that two different values of the enthalpy computed in that manner correspond to each value of the apparent van’t Hoff enthalpy, but that the choice between the two is easily made by reference to the volume change on reaction. The enthalpies of association of subunit pairs of seven oligomers are all found to be positive and much more uniformly related to the size of the intersubunit surface than those previously assigned by use of the classical van’t Hoff plot.

Abstract:
This chapter considers covenants in freehold land — also known as ‘freehold covenants’. As the name suggests, these are promises made between freehold owners of land. For example, imagine that Anna owns a plot of land which adjoins another parcel of land belonging to Ben. Anna may covenant (i.e. promise) to ensure the frontage of her house is painted annually to maintain the amenity of the area. Ben may also covenant not to run a commercial enterprise on his property. These promises are freehold covenants. The chapter discusses the nature of covenants in freehold land; enforcing freehold covenants; enforcing positive freehold covenants; discharge and modification of freehold covenants; and reform of freehold covenants.

In Shoes (1916), Lois Weber re-examines the relationship between shoes and social mobility. Far from guiding the working-class protagonist’s progress, a pair of worn boots trap her into a moral compromise, which destroys her hope of future advancement, either romantically or socially. Weber’s investigation into wage inequality, the rights of women and the influence of consumer culture via footwear continues in The Blot (1921), which revisits the same plot in a lower middle-class milieu and expands on the theme. Here, shoes are again a danger to women, but also an indicator of genteel distress and a cheap, impractical commodity, good only for profiteering rather than practicality.

This chapter explains the history and context behind the origins of the Nobel Prize in economics. When founded in 1968, the Nobel Prize in economics was a delayed artefact of the quest to understand and control financial and business cycles in the twentieth century. Like the original Nobel Prizes, it was endowed from the bounty of a single benefactor, in this case the governor of the Riksbank, Sweden's central bank. While Alfred Nobel's motivation was sublime, and the money came out of his will, the chain of causes for the economics prize was something of a farce, and was paid for by Swedish taxpayers. How it came about cannot be separated from what it is about, and the context is more telling than the prize itself. It was a belated incident in one of the central plots of modern history — the distributional struggle between the owners of wealth and the rest of society. In an ironic twist, this late-coming Nobel was authorized by Swedish Social Democracy in the course of its long stand-off with Swedish capitalism, in the belief that it did not matter. But it did.

The forces are characterised by inertia coefficients, and the analysis is based on potential flow theory using a mapping based on bipolar coordinates. The analysis corresponds to the long wave limit. The dependence of the force coefficients on cylinder spacing and radius ratio is illustrated by contour plots, which might be used as design charts to determine the fluid forces on arbitrary configurations of the two cylinders.
