Carela, Español Valentín. "Network traffic classification : from theory to practice." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/283573.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its inception until today, the Internet has been in constant transformation. The analysis and monitoring of data networks try to shed some light on this huge black box of interconnected computers. In particular, the classification of the network traffic has become crucial for understanding the Internet. During the last years, the research community has proposed many solutions to accurately identify and classify the network traffic. However, the continuous evolution of Internet applications and their techniques to avoid detection make their identification a very challenging task, which is far from being completely solved. This thesis addresses the network traffic classification problem from a more practical point of view, filling the gap between the real-world requirements from the network industry, and the research carried out. The first block of this thesis aims to facilitate the deployment of existing techniques in production networks. To achieve this goal, we study the viability of using NetFlow as input in our classification technique, a monitoring protocol already implemented in most routers. Since the application of packet sampling has become almost mandatory in large networks, we also study its impact on the classification and propose a method to improve the accuracy in this scenario. Our results show that it is possible to achieve high accuracy with both sampled and unsampled NetFlow data, despite the limited information provided by NetFlow. Once the classification solution is deployed it is important to maintain its accuracy over time. Current network traffic classification techniques have to be regularly updated to adapt them to traffic changes. The second block of this thesis focuses on this issue with the goal of automatically maintaining the classification solution without human intervention. Using the knowledge of the first block, we propose a classification solution that combines several techniques only using Sampled NetFlow as input for the classification. Then, we show that classification models suffer from temporal and spatial obsolescence and, therefore, we design an autonomic retraining system that is able to automatically update the models and keep the classifier accurate along time. Going one step further, we introduce next the use of stream-based Machine Learning techniques for network traffic classification. In particular, we propose a classification solution based on Hoeffding Adaptive Trees. Apart from the features of stream-based techniques (i.e., process an instance at a time and inspect it only once, with a predefined amount of memory and a bounded amount of time), our technique is able to automatically adapt to the changes in the traffic by using only NetFlow data as input for the classification. The third block of this thesis aims to be a first step towards the impartial validation of state-of-the-art classification techniques. The wide range of techniques, datasets, and ground-truth generators make the comparison of different traffic classifiers a very difficult task. To achieve this goal we evaluate the reliability of different Deep Packet Inspection-based techniques (DPI) commonly used in the literature for ground-truth generation. The results we obtain show that some well-known DPI techniques present several limitations that make them not recommendable as a ground-truth generator in their current state. In addition, we publish some of the datasets used in our evaluations to address the lack of publicly available datasets and make the comparison and validation of existing techniques easier.

Palmer, Nicholas James. "Pattern classification via unsupervised learners." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2008. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/2373/.

Full text
Abstract:
We consider classification problems in a variant of the Probably Approximately Correct (PAC)-learning framework, in which an unsupervised learner creates a discriminant function over each class and observations are labeled by the learner returning the highest value associated with that observation. Consideration is given to whether this approach gains significant advantage over traditional discriminant techniques. It is shown that PAC-learning distributions over class labels under Ll distance or KL-divergence implies PAC classification in this framework. We give bounds on the regret associated with the resulting classifier, taking into account the possibility of variable misclassification penalties. We demonstrate the advantage of estimating the a posteriori probability distributions over class labels in the setting of Optical Character Recognition. We show that unsupervised learners can be used to learn a class of probabilistic concepts (stochastic rules denoting the probability that an observation has a positive label in a 2-class setting). This demonstrates a situation where unsupervised learners can be used even when it is hard to learn distributions over class labels - in this case the discriminant functions do not estimate the class probability densities. We use a standard state-merging technique to PAC-learn a class of probabilistic automata and show that by learning the distribution over outputs under the weaker L1 distance rather than KL-divergence we are able to learn without knowledge of the expected length of an output. It is also shown that for a restricted class of these automata learning under L1 distance is equivalent to learning under KL-divergence.

Ratcliffe, S. C. "A metaphysics for the classification of chemical reactions in practice." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2015. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1464574/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the classification of chemical reactions in practice. It is motivated by the lack of discussion in the natural kind literature on the classification of reactions and other non-entity like things. I appeal to the discipline of chemoinformatics and study a new approach to the classification of reactions which is aimed specifically at meeting the needs of chemists in industry. I show that this methodology consists of three stages; the identification of a type of reaction of interest, the identification of a quantitative structural activity reaction and the importing of this data into a neural network. The output of classification is a reaction landscape which represents the similarity relations that hold between the different reactions. My aim is to outline a metaphysics that is descriptively fit for purpose with respect to my case study. I argue that such a metaphysics must be descriptively accurate, capture appropriate similarity relations and promote explanatory unification. I evaluate the entities and activities ontology proposed by Machamer, Darden and Craver, an ontology consisting on entities and dispositional properties and causal dispositionalism, against my criteria. I argue that none of these accounts are descriptively fit for purpose and that commitment to an ontological category of processes is required alongside commitment to entities and dispositional properties. I suggest that the types of reactions revealed in classification fall in the category of processes. From my analysis of reaction classification throughout the course of my thesis, I generate a list of characteristics associated with reactions and use this to provide an account of the metaphysics underlying the category of processes. My proposal focuses on the relationship between potentiality and actuality in a given chemical reaction.

The names of the months corresponding to December in the Gothic calendar – jiuleis, in the English calendar as described by Bede – Giuli, and in the Old Icelandic semester-reckoning (misseristal) calendar – Ýlir, are cognates. I suggest that this occurrence is not a coincidence. I propose that certain features found in those calendars raise the possibility they are descendants of the Jubilees calendar, as formulated in the pseudepigraphical books of 1 Enoch and Jubilees.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: Chest pain is a common reason for an encounter in general practice. The present investigation was set out to characterize the consultation rate of chest pain, accompanying symptoms, frequency of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and results of the encounter. Materials and Methods: Cross‑sectional data were collected from randomly selected patients in the German Sächsische Epidemiologische Studie in der Allgemeinmedizin 2 (SESAM 2) and analyzed from the Dutch Transition Project. Results: Overall, 270 patients from the SESAM 2 study consulted a general practitioner due to chest pain (3% of all consultations). Chest pain was more frequent in people aged over 45 years. The most common diagnostic interventions were physical examination, electrocardiogram at rest and analysis of blood parameters. For the majority of cases, the physicians arranged a follow‑up consultation or prescribed drugs. The transition project documented 8117 patients reporting chest pain with a frequency of 44.5/1000 patient years (1.7% of all consultations). Physical examination was also the most common diagnostic intervention, and physician’s advice the most relevant therapeutic one. Conclusion: The most common causes for chest pain were musculoskeletal problems followed by cardiovascular diseases. Ischemic heart disease, psychogenic problems, and respiratory diseases each account for about 10% of the cases. However, acutely dangerous causes are rare in general practice.

Abstract:
Home networks are facing a continuous evolution and are becoming more and more complex. Their complexity has evolved according to two interrelated dimensions. On the one hand, the home network topology (devices and connectivity technologies) tends to produce more complex configurations. On the other hand, the set of services accessed through the home network is growing in a tremendous fashion. Such context has made the home network management more challenging for both Internet Service Provider (ISP) and end-users. In this dissertation, we focus on the traffic dimension of the above described complexity. Our first contribution consists on proposing an architecture for traffic monitoring in home networks. We provide a comparative study of some existing open source tools. Then, we perform a testbed evaluation of the main software components implied in our architecture. Based on the experiments results, we discuss several deployment limits and possibilities. In our second contribution, we conduct a residential traffic and usages analysis based on real trace involving more than 34 000 customers. First, we present our data collection and processing methodology. Second, we present our findings with respect to the different layers of the TCP/IP protocol stack characteristics. Then, we perform a subjective analysis across 645 of residential customers. The results of both evaluations provide a complete synthesis of residential usage patterns and applications characteristics. In our third contribution, we propose a novel scheme for real-time residential traffic classification. Our scheme, which is based on a machine learning approach called C5.0, aims to fulfil the lacks identified in the literature. At this aim, our algorithm is evaluated using several traffic inputs. Then, we detail how we implemented a lightweight probe able to capture, track and identify finely applications running in the home network. This implementation allowed us to validate our designing principles upon realistic test conditions. The obtained results show clearly the efficiency and feasibility of our solution

Abstract:
Purpose – This investigation aims to reframe the sizeable literature on barriers and drivers for energy efficiency measures and the phenomenon of the energy efficiency gap. We identified a gap between academic methods and industrial needs as well as a neglect of the cultural di-mension, despite its considerable impact. Based on this insight, the purpose of this paper is to integrate all of the various influences on industrial energy behavior previously identified in the literature in a refined energy cultures framework. Design/methodology/approach – This paper includes a systematic literature review of re-search in the field of energy management, energy efficiency, and cultural aspects within barri-ers and drivers of energy behavior. We selected and refined an existing energy cultures framework for the industrial context. To meet industrial needs, we applied an ontology map-ping of its core elements onto an international standard common for industrial energy man-agement practice. Findings – First, we present a refined framework for industrial energy cultures incorporating past barriers and drivers as factors. The framework enables an evaluation of attitude and be-havioral aspects, underlying technologies, organizational culture and actions related to energy as a system of interdependencies. Second, the factors are ranked based on number of appear-ances and empirical metadata. Economic aspects such as ‘Purchase, installment, and hidden costs’, ‘General investment and risk behavior’, and ‘Regulatory conditions’ are the highest ranked factors, but ‘Existing knowledge about EEM’, ‘Hierarchy approach: Top down’, and ‘Environmental concerns’ follow closely and represent cultural aspects which are still under-rated. Third, while illustrating a successful mapping onto a standardized process of continuous improvement, we also argue for heightened an academia-practice efforts. Social implications – Targeting the energy efficiency gap is an essential part of the sustainable development goals. The refined energy cultures framework allows for a better understanding of the industrial energy behaviors that are responsible for a significant share of a company’s success. The introduction of energy cultures serves as a starting point for future scholarly re-search within sustainability management accounting. Originality/value – The investigation combines existing research streams, their concepts, and their results about cultural aspects related to energy efficiency for both academics and practi-tioners. This review is the first to capture all of the various factors analyzed in academic litera-ture using the energy cultures framework as a basis. We add to the theoretical development of that framework with its application to the industrial context. This was identified as a gap. Its refinement helps to holistically understand barriers and drivers of industrial energy efficiency measures in order to support its practical implementation.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the assessment process in Swedish compulsory school practice, and the changes that occur in relation to the introduction of national school reforms. The fieldwork forming the basis of the thesis was conducted in year five and year six classrooms between 2011-2013, a period during which new national syllabuses with knowledge requirements, grades in year six and extended national tests were introduced. The thesis consists of four articles, the first of which explores how the assessment process is put into practice in a year five classroom and how it is understood by the students and one of their teachers. The fieldwork on which the first article is based was conducted prior to the introduction of the above-mentioned reforms. The second article investigates the assessment process in two different year five classrooms in two schools, after the introduction of the new syllabuses but prior to the introduction of grades in year six and extended national tests. The third article investigates changes in the assessment process in the same two schools. The fieldwork was conducted in year five and year six, in relation to the introduction of grades in year six and extended national tests. The fourth article addresses how changes in the assessment process have affected students’ learner identities. The empirical material was collected during four fieldwork periods in three schools, chiefly through classroom observations, interviews and student essays. The analysis in the thesis is based primarily on Basil Bernstein’s (e.g. 2000) theoretical framework but also on the theoretical concepts of Torrance and Pryor (1998). The study shows that the reforms are exerting a significant influence on the assessment process in the investigated classroom practices. Teachers monitor their students’ performance more closely and students strive to acquaint themselves with what is expected of them. It also appears that the focus is increasingly on students’ performance in relation to the steering documents, that the more regulated practices restrict teachers’ and students’ autonomy and that the assessment process in the two schools investigated in both year five and year six are becoming increasingly similar. Furthermore, the study shows that students tend to pay more attention to their school work, while at the same time experiencing more negative pressure to perform. In the concluding analysis and discussion sections, connections are drawn between prevailing education policy and the reforms, as well as their influence on classroom practice, students and teachers.

Abstract:
Introduction: Treatment methods of anterior urethral strictures in adults have undergone considerable changes in the recent past. Our goal was to determine national practice patterns among German urologists and to compare results with the results of prior international surveys. Methods: We conducted a survey on the management of urethral strictures among German urologists. Results: Eight hundred forty-five urologists, representing about 14.6% of German urologists, answered the survey. Most common procedures were direct vision internal urethrotomy (DVIU; 87.2%), blind internal urethrotomy (57.5%), dilatation (56.3%), ventral buccal mucosa graft urethroplasty (31.6%) and excision and primary anastomosis (28.9%). In case of a 3.5-cm bulbar stricture and in the case of a 1-cm bulbar stricture after 2 failed DVIUs, a consecutive urethroplasty was significantly more often favoured compared to transurethral treatment options (44.9 vs. 21.3% and 59.4 vs. 8.3%, both p < 0.001). Conclusion: Open urethral reconstruction reveals to be a more common method in practice nowadays. Adherence to recommended treatment algorithms improved in comparison to prior surveys.

Bhusal, Dharma Raj. "Economic Crime : Law and Legal Practice in the context of Nepal." Doctoral thesis, Universitätsbibliothek Chemnitz, 2009. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:ch1-200901495.

Full text
Abstract:
The doctoral thesis is dealing with the phenomenon of economic crime in the context of Nepal, i.e. a developing country situated between two big emerging States, China and India. The study starts by explaining objectives and methods of the work, then it gives a short overview about the actual social, economic and political situation of Nepal. Chapter 3 concentrates on the definitions of "economic crime" and describes seven different types, starting with corruption and ending with money laundering. The explanation of these various types is completed by sketching the relevant working agencies the task of which is to fight against specific crimes. In the next chapter, the author at first shows the structure of the Nepali legal order and organisation, before he is looking at various laws/acts relating to economic crime. At the end of chapter 4, he is trying to compare those laws and to assess their stringency and efficiency. Chapter 5 deals more detailledly with relevant working agencies and is structured similar to the previous one, i.e. it explains the organisation, task and powers of each agency as well as their cooperation and, at the end, it tries to assess common features, parallels as well as divergencies between them. Chapter 6 is based upon field studies of the author. On the one hand, it shows the results from questionnaires which were handed out to a lot of persons in Nepal and which might give a rather broad impression about various aspects of economic crime in this country. On the other hand, a very prominent case (Governor and Director of Nepal Rastra Bank) is looked at more intensively, and the author has scanned important original documents in order to give a clear account of its main features. At last, by summing up theoretical, normative and empirical components the author has been caused to deliver some proposals of his own for remedies relating to economic crime, in particular concerning improvements of control mechanisms and establishing a single working agency with different departments for the fight against economic crime

Abstract:
This paper discusses the conflicts between some cultural practices of the Midzichenda (i. e. divination, healing and witchcraft) and the Kenyan Law. For decades, diviners and healers have been misconceived and condemned wholesale as `witchdoctors´, `wizards´ or `witches´. This misconception has seen many innocent diviners and healers mercilessly arrested, hurriedly arraigned in court, heavily fined and (or) eventually imprisoned, and their paraphernalia confiscated and finally destroyed by the state. The paper calls for proper understanding of the intricate belief in and practise of divination and healing vis-a-vis witchcraft and proposes ways which could help solve the conflicts.

Abstract:
For many students, mathematics, traditionally thought to be difficult and dull, is often considered inaccessible, generating a negative attitude towards it. In order to encourage a positive attitude towards mathematics, we propose class practices that, through research activities, will lead the students to experiment a similar path to the one that has given, as a final product, a structured theory, so as to enhance their self-efficacy, give a correct vision of the discipline and stimulate positive emotions. This can be realized, for example, as a “laboratory activity” in which the students compare ideas, intuitions, arguments, and work together to obtain results, using their critical capabilities in a collaborative learning activity. A team of university professors and high school teachers has developed a laboratory activity that focuses on some properties of quadrilaterals. The activity has at any rate been experimented in different first biennium classes of some high schools and has obtained very good results.

Abstract:
The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part, the basic concepts, such as “African philosophy” and “Afrophone philosophies”, their relationship and the general context of the debate on “African philosophy” will be defined. The author anticipate her definition here and says that “Afrophone philosophies”are those discourses that are the medium of philosophical reflexion in a given culture. Thus in the second part of the paper, Alena Rettová concentrates on one specific case of a philosophical reflexion, that of reflecting philosophical influences in the late works of Euphrase Kezilahabi, Nagona (1990) and Mzingile (1991).

Abstract:
The objective of this research was to evaluate diagnosis and treatment of early axial spondyloarthritis in clinical practice. For this, we have included in this thesis three articles that reflect the three milestones of our research. First, we aimed to validate the ASAS criteria for axial spondyloarthritis in a clinical practice setting, by evaluating their performance both in terms of classification but also of diagnostic purposes, compared to other sets of criteria and in different spondyloarthritis presentations (e.g. psoriatic arthritis, IBD related-arthritis, etc..). Secondly, since the “clinical” arm of the ASAS criteria for axial spondyloarthritis is not well recognized by many in the medical community, we aimed to compare the demographics, phenotypic and disease characteristics of patients fulfilling the “imaging” and “clinical” arm of the ASAS. Finally, we aimed to evaluate the treatment effect of TNF-alpha blockers in clinical practices and the potential predictors of response (e.g. the fulfilment of the ASAS criteria for axial spondyloarthritis).

Abstract:
Background and Objectives: To describe patterns of healthcare utilization among patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in general practitioner (GP) settings in Germany. Methods: Using a large computerized database with information from GP practices across Germany, we identified all patients, aged > 18 years, with diagnoses of, or prescriptions for, GAD (ICD-10 diagnosis code F41.1) between October 1, 2003 and September 30, 2004 ("GAD patients"). We also constituted an age- and sex-matched comparison group, consisting of randomly selected patients without any GP encounters or prescriptions for anxiety or depression (a common comorbidity in GAD) during the same period. GAD patients were then compared to those in the matched comparison group over the one-year study period. Results: The study sample consisted of 3340 GAD patients and an equal number of matched comparators. Mean age was 53.2 years; 66.3% were women. Over the 12-month study period, GAD patients were more likely than matched comparators to have encounters for various comorbidities, including sleep disorders (odds ratio [OR] = 6.75 [95% CI = 5.31, 8.57]), substance abuse disorders (3.91 [2.89, 5.28]), and digestive system disorders (2.62 [2.36, 2.91]) (all p < 0.01). GAD patients averaged 5.6 more GP encounters (10.5 [SD = 8.8] vs 4.9 [5.7] for comparison group) and 1.4 more specialist referrals (2.3 [2.9] vs 0.9 [1.7]) (both p < 0.01). Only 58.3% of GAD patients received some type of psychotropic medication (i.e., benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and/or sedatives/hypnotics). Conclusions: Patients with GAD in GP practices in Germany have more clinically recognized comorbidities and higher levels of healthcare utilization than patients without anxiety or depression.

Abstract:

Service-learning, with a longstanding history in American higher education (Burkhardt & Pasque, 2005), includes three key tenets: superior academic learning, meaningful and relevant community service, and persistent civic learning (McGoldrick and Ziegert, 2002). The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has created an elective classification system—Carnegie Community Engagement Classification—for institutions of higher education to demonstrate the breadth and depth of student involvement and learning through partnerships and engagement in the community (Dalton & Crosby, 2011; Hurtado & DeAngelo, 2012; Kuh et al., 2008; Pryor, Hurtado, Saenz, Santos, & Korn, 2007). Community engagement “is in the culture, commonly understood practices and knowledge, and (CCEC helps determine) whether it is really happening—rhetoric versus reality” (J. Saltmarsh, personal communication, August 11, 2014). The study considers the applications of three Carnegie Community Engagement Classification designated institutions to understand the institutionalization of service-learning over time by examining the 2008 designation and 2015 reclassification across institution types—a Private Liberal Arts College, a Private Teaching University, and a Public Research University located in the same metropolitan area. Organizational Change Theory was used as a theoretical model. Case study methodology was used in the present qualitative research to perform document analysis with qualitative interviews conducted to elucidate the data from the 2008 and 2015 CCEC applications from the three institutions. Using intra- and inter-comparative analysis, this study highlights approaches, policies, ethos, and emerging concepts to inform how higher education institutions increase the quality and quantity of service-learning opportunities that benefit higher education practitioners as well as community leaders.

van, Niekerk Yvette. "The intra- and inter-rater reliability of manual muscle testing in the new hand classification of wheelchair rugby." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/63039.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Before 2015 the hand classification in wheelchair rugby consisted of non-sport specific tests. The hand classification was not in accordance with the classification code introduced by the International Paralympic Committee in 2003. In 2015, the newly revised wheelchair rugby classification manual was released, containing the revised wheelchair rugby hand classification. Hand tests that were not functional sport-specific tests were removed from the bench test in wheelchair rugby classification. Lumbrical, interossei and thumb opposition manual muscle testing were added to the bench test in wheelchair rugby classification. On both national and international levels of classification, classifiers verbalised their uncertainty to their fellow panel members regarding their hand placement on the athlete’s hand and interpretation of the manual muscle testing of the hand that was observed and tested. This justified reliability testing of the new hand classification. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the intra and inter-rater reliability of the manual muscle testing in the new hand classification of wheelchair rugby. Study design: This study followed a quantitative non-experimental, cross-sectional design. Method: The raters who took part in the study were active international wheelchair rugby classifiers from all over the world. The raters received an electronic questionnaire consisting of biographic information and three videos repeated two times. Each video showed an athlete’s hand being classified by a classifier. The raters had to give a manual muscle test grade for each subject (muscle) tested in each video by using tick boxes. The manual muscle test grades that could be given were: 0-1, 2, 3 and 4-5. The first three raters in each international wheelchair rugby classification level who completed the questionnaire were used for the data analysis. Data Analysis: The statistician used the two way model for the ICC in which each subject was rated by the same raters to determine the absolute agreement for each objective. The Medcalc program was used. To indicate the strength of agreement the ranges provided by Landis and Koch (1977) were used: 0.0 – 0.2 slight, 0.21 – 0.4 fair, 0.41 – 0.6 moderate, 0.61 – 0.8 substantial and 0.81 – 1.00 almost perfect. Conclusion: Raters one, two, five, seven, eight and nine’s intraclass correlation coefficient values fell between 0.81-1.00 which is descriptive of almost perfect levels of intra-rater reliability. Raters three, four and six’s intraclass correlation coefficient values fell between 0.61-0.80 which is descriptive of substantial levels of intra-rater reliability. However, none of the raters scored 100% when accuracy was determined. All three levels had intraclass correlation coefficient values which is descriptive of almost perfect levels of intra-rater reliability within each level. Level 2, 3 and 4 classifiers had intraclass correlation coefficient values between 0.81- 1.00 which is descriptive of almost perfect levels of inter-rater reliability when the manual muscle testing grades for the first and repeated videos were compared. Across all nine raters there was a high intraclass correlation coefficient value which was descriptive of almost perfect inter-rater reliability. The accuracy in each level and across all nine raters was low. Finger extensors, thumb abductor and thumb flexor showed intraclass correlation coefficient values between 0.41-0.6 which is descriptive of moderate levels of intrarater reliability. The only subjects (muscles) that were graded accurately when compared to a memorandum were subjects with a manual muscle test grade 0-1 and 4-5. Most of the accurate manual muscle test grades were for athlete two in the video footage. Athlete two was classified as having a 2.0 hand.

Abstract:
Teaching methods change during times. The authors consider it essential to anchor the theoretical part of studies with practice in the natural environment. Therefore, to ensure the achievement of leaming outcomes, practical training is included in a number of courses in Estonian academic forestry education. The history of academic forestry education in Estonia starts in 1920. The Experimental Forest District at Järvselja was established in 1921. Since 1997 its name is the Foundation Järvselja Experimental and Training Centre and it belongs to the Estonian University of Life Sciences. The Järvselja Center's total area is 10 553 ha. Forest land comprises 6 626 ha, of which 2 723 ha are protected. Bogs form 3 147 ha of the Järvselja Centre's land. Järvselja Experimental and Training Centre is the only one in Estonia which has complete infrastructure for accommodation and catering. Every year Estonian forestry students have various practical training courses in Järvselja. In most cases, practical training is held in summer, but some courses are offered in winter (e.g. forest and timber measurement) as well. Also every year some graduation theses are defended on themes done in Järvselja forests. Forests in Järvselja are used to carry out several research projects, too.

Abstract:
Objectives: The management of patients with multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) under everyday clinical conditions has been insufficiently studied. We therefore collected comprehensive observational data on patients with MMN who received intravenous (IV) or subcutaneous (SC) immunoglobulins (IGs) as maintenance therapy. Methods: This was a prospective, noninterventional study (registry) in neurological centres (hospitals and offices) throughout Germany. Results: As of 1 December 2015, 80 patients with MMN were included (mean age 55.4 ± 9.8 years, 67% males, mean disease duration 10.7 ± 10.2 years). The affected limb regions were predominantly distal muscle groups of the upper extremities. On the inflammatory neuropathy cause and treatment (INCAT) scale, 94% of the patients had some disability in the arms and 61% in the legs. At inclusion, 98.8% received IVIG and 1.3% SCIG. Substantial variation was observed between IVIG treatment intervals (every 0.7 to 17.3 weeks) and dosage (0.2–2.1 g/kg body weight received during a single administration; mean monthly dosage, 0.9 g/kg body weight). However, the mean monthly dosage was steady over time. At 1-year follow up, improvement was seen in muscle strength, INCAT and quality of life (QoL) scores (SF-36 questionnaire). Conclusions: The management of patients with MMN in everyday clinical practice demonstrates a wide range of absolute dosages and treatment intervals of IG, supporting the recommended practice of determining treatment dose on an individual patient basis. The improvements in muscle strength and reduction in disability, accompanied by increased QoL, strengthen the case for use of IG as a maintenance treatment for MMN.

Abstract:
The basics of visualisations in the context of Cultural Heritage are not broadly defined. But this is the precondition to find out suitable and practical strategies to document and manage the knowledge contained therein. For this, the paper focusses the properties, potentials and typologies of Cultural Heritage visualisations related to application fields and possibilities as well as documentation strategies, creation process and methodology. The paper starts with a theoretical overview of the properties and potential of visualisation related to the usability in the context of Cultural Heritage. On this basis the correlation between application possibilities and the three application fields - research, transfer of knowledge and preservation - will be discussed. In a second part, the paper identifies the similarities and differences of typical working processes and methodologies by the study “Investigation of 3D modelling workflows in CH with the object of development of key concepts and definitions”. This is a subproject of the project COSCH with the purpose to create a framework called COSCHKR as an international and interdisciplinary platform for state-of-the-art documentation of Cultural Heritage. For this, the main topic of the study was the analysis, evaluation and comparison of thirty different 3D projects of three institutes. It was possible to define different types of CH visualization and framework of a working process. Third topic is the documentation and management of knowledge of such visualisation in the field of Cultural Heritage. The paper compares three current research projects and points out commons and differences of the different strategies. At the end, a synthesis gives a first idea for common strategies and best practice guidelines of Cultural Heritage visualisation related to the process, methodology and documentation. Purpose – Find out general strategies to document and manage knowledge Design/methodology/approach – Based on investigation and evaluation of different projects. Originality/value – Most of the projects are a special application for one research question, this methodology raises a common claim. Practical implications – The outcomes of the investigation is a basis for further practical applications with a high range of usability.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Dipyrone (metamizole) is one of the most widely used non-opioid analgesics for the treatment of cancer pain. Aim: Because evidence-based recommendations are not yet available, a systematic review was conducted for the German Guideline Program in Oncology to provide recommendations for the use of dipyrone in cancer pain. Design: First, a systematic review for clinical trials assessing dipyrone in adult patients with cancer pain was conducted. Endpoints were pain intensity, opioid-sparing effects, safety, and quality of life. Data sources: The search was performed in MedLine, Embase (via Ovid), and the Cochrane Library (1948–2013) and additional hand search was conducted. Finally, recommendations were developed and agreed in a formal structured consensus process by 53 representatives of scientific medical societies and 49 experts. Results: Of 177 retrieved studies, 4 could be included (3 randomized controlled trials and 1 cohort study, n = 252 patients): dipyrone significantly decreased pain intensity compared to placebo, even if low doses (1.5–2 g/day) were used. Higher doses (3 × 2 g/day) were more effective than low doses (3 × 1 g/day), but equally effective as 60 mg oral morphine/day. Pain reduction of dipyrone and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs did not differ significantly. Compared to placebo, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and morphine, the incidence of adverse effects was not increased. Conclusion: Dipyrone can be recommended for the treatment of cancer pain as an alternative to other non-opioids either alone or in combination with opioids. It can be preferred over non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs due to the presumably favorable side effect profile in long-term use, but comparative studies are not available for long-term use.

Abstract:

Abstract:
For more than 40 years, a tremendous number of studies have empirically explored the relationship between Corporate Environmental Performance (CEP) and Corporate Financial Performance (CFP). This study considers the relationship from a new perspective—via a qualitative research approach based on expert interviews. First, practitioners are queried for their view on the link between CEP and CFP and how to measure it. Since the vast majority see a positive relationship, this study contributes with a new form of evidence that it pays to be green. The chosen qualitative approach also allows a more detailed analysis of underlying cause-and-effect mechanisms. For instance, interviewed practitioners emphasize a direct and indirect impact from CEP on CFP. Second, the study conducts interviews with experts from research and associations (non-practitioners) and compares the viewpoints of the two interview groups. One prevalent difference refers to the fact that non-practitioners do not focus on the two impact levels. Moreover, business experts perceive the link between CEP and CFP as much less complex and reveal more pragmatically oriented considerations. The study then discusses how the interview results and identified differences can be used to direct future research and to support corporations in their move towards sustainability.

Sun, Ying. "Generating implications for design in practice: How different stimuli are retrieved and transformed to generate ideas." TUDpress, 2016. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A33981.

Full text
Abstract:
Design idea generation is a significant part of a designer’s work and most frequently associated with creative problem solving. However, an outstanding challenge in design is translating empirical findings into ideas or knowledge that inform design, also known as generating implications for design. Though great efforts have been made to bridge this gap, there is still no overall consensus on how best to incorporate fieldwork data into the design idea generation process. The generation of design ideas is a process that is rooted in individual knowledge and is often considered a precedent-based type of reasoning, where knowledge is continuously transformed to produce new knowledge and this creative leap across the divide is very difficult. And it is believed that designers could potentially benefit from external stimuli that would provide a starting point or trigger and make the ideas generation more efficient. Most researchers have examined when and what type of stimuli designers used to support design idea generation. Nevertheless, it is still not clear how the different types of stimuli are retrieved and transformed during idea generation phases, and the knowledge transformation during this phases need to be clarified. In order to resolve this issue I conduct an open-ended semi-structured qualitative interview to learn about student and professional designers’ knowledge on how they select stimuli and transform it into design ideas, then compare with professor’s opinions. The interview would be conducted in terms of one-on-one face to face or online interview depending on the availability and accessibility of the interview respondents which would be audio recorded. Knowing more about how different designers, especially professional designers, to retrieve and transform preferred stimuli into ideas, and the design thinking involved in the process, is a significant step towards investigating the influence of stimuli during idea generation. Ultimately, I intend to build a general mechanism for designers to conduct an appropriate selection of functionally useful stimuli to transfer empirical findings to knowledge that inform design. The results try to help professional designers get more scientific structure, give student designers Visual Knowledge Media more practical guidance, but also help design education refine design idea generation methods and improve resulting techniques to discover a dynamic balance among theory and practice.

Abstract:
From April to June 2016 a new and exclusively virtual teaching format – the international STEM1 Summer School – was provided at the University of Mining and Technology in Freiberg. The paper presents the approach, didactical design, and results of evaluation. The international STEM Summer School was developed and tested within the project „Holistic International STEMs - Learning with case studies and real-life industry experiences“. The aim was to better prepare STEM students for challenges in the current professional world that are characterized by in-ternationalization and digitalization. The project offers some ideas on how to teach the currently re-quired skills and competencies by industry in higher education. The conceptualization of the project was made possible with funding from the Donors\' Association for the Promotion of Humanities and Sciences in Germany2. The exclusively virtual collaboration is due to the different geographical distances and locations of the participating students, which generates specific challenges. On the one hand, technical conditions at the particular places of residence have an impact on virtual collaboration. On the other hand, cultural, lingual, and occupational differences, as well as the differing media literacy, play an important role. In addition, the setting of objectives and provision of incentives is decisive for the shared virtual work. The results of the first round of the international STEM Summer School indicate possible solution strategies based on the three areas of media use, interaction, and task orientation. During the Summer School, students from ten different countries solved real-life job case studies in small interdisciplinary teams. Abstract:
