Marin, Mara. Modeling Commitment for Structural Relations. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190498627.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 2 extends the concept of commitment from personal to social structural relations and begins the argument that our implication in social structures puts us in relations analogous to those of personal commitments. This analogy has a descriptive and a normative element. Descriptively, this book’s notion of commitment captures the idea that social structures are the accumulated effects of our actions. Normatively, it captures the claim that we owe obligations to each other in virtue of our structural relationships to each other, that is, because our actions, accumulated over time, are responsible for reproducing the structure. It illustrates these claims with the example of a woman who attempts to change the gendered nature of parenting. This view of social structures as commitments is an antidote to the powerlessness we otherwise experience in our relation to unjust structures.

Full text
Abstract:
Analogy was a crucial conceptual tool for Victorian natural philosophers, who regarded the physical world less in terms of material bodies than formal relationships. Thus, even as they aimed for verisimilitude in their theoretical models, James Clerk Maxwell and Michael Faraday used analogical figures freely, for they understood nature itself to be structured around analogical relations. Like Maxwell, Algernon Charles Swinburne wrote an undergraduate essay on the subject of analogy, conceiving it as fundamental to both scientific advancement and poetic production, where its logic of equivalence subsumes not only metaphor but also rhythm and rhyme. Swinburne’s poems “Before the Mirror” and “Sapphics” dramatize the replacement of the traditional notion of metaphor by the structures of formal analogy.

Abstract:
This article discusses the structural, electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of carbon-fullerene-based polymers. In particular, it examines the defect-induced ferromagnetism of the C60-based polymers and its analog in the case of non-traditional inorganic materials. It first reviews the computational methods currently used in the literature, highlighting the pros and cons of each one of them. It then considers the defects associated with the ferromagnetism of the C60-based polymers, namely carbon vacancies, the 2 + 2 cycloaddition bonds and impurity atoms, and their effect on the electronic structure. It also evaluates the effect of codoping and goes on to describe the electronic, magnetic and transport properties of the rhombohedral C60-polymer. Finally, it looks at the origin of magnetic coupling among the magnetic moments in the rhombohedral C60-polymer and provides further evidence for the analogy between the magnetism of the rhombohedral C60-polymer and zinc oxide.

Full text
Abstract:
Counterpoint, the stratification of a musical texture into structurally independent voices, occurs in the domains of rhythm, tonality, and form. In all situations, we recognize the structures of individual voices, and a total structure that results from the combination. The methods of combining structures are similar in rhythm and form. Rhythmic counterpoint is an especially important technique for Brahms, as a number of examples illustrate. Schenker’s concepts of unfolding and horizontalization describe coordination of counterpointed structures in the tonal domain. Formal counterpoint is a more novel concept, but by analogy to rhythmic and tonal counterpoint, we can understand recapitulation-based forms like sonata form and rounded binary as a manifestation of formal counterpoint.

Abstract:
The concept of temporal structure is motivated through analogies between music and hiking, storytelling, and language. The metaphor of dimension is examined and an argument made for the independence of musical parameters and the importance of structural disjunction, structural conflict between parameters.
