Resumen
The aim of this study was to explore the experience of parents whose children are in active treatment for various types of cancer. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 parents. Through interpretative phenomenological analysis, five themes were derived: a) response to the diagnosis, b) parental “navigating” through the new life situation, c) “being in the hospital”, d) sources of additional “burden”, and e) those who made the process of treatment easier. The majority of parents used active coping strategies; for example, they tried to mobilise existing resources, focused on the present and lived a “day-by-day” kind of life. As aggravating circumstances of treatment, they noted inadequate physical conditions, increased costs of living, inadequate support of family members and a prejudicial environment. During the process of medical treatment, parents found the following factors helpful: child's strength, other parents’ support, community members, and the expertise of medical staff. This paper emphasises the complexities and importance of understanding parenting processes that can operate throughout the disease trajectory for families experiencing paediatric cancer. The findings on the experience of parents gives increasing insight into difficulties but also into parental protectiveness, which can contribute to defining the interventions for strengthening their parental role.

This dissertation aims to study the interactions established between adults and children in the daily life of a public school for children in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, having as a basis a methodology that takes into consideration the child as the subject of the research. Thus, in this research the understanding of such a daily life takes into consideration the point of view of the children, how the children takes possession of the space, what he or she does and says, understanding the importance of the childhood play for the child to know his world and to recognize himself or herself in it. The analysis begins with a dialogue between the thoughts of authors who are identified with studies about infancy, the child and the childhood education (Manoel Sarmento, Manoel Pinto, Sonia Kramer, Lev Vygotsky, Walter Benjamin, among others). The first chapter talks about the possible encounters between childhood education, infancy and the child. The second one presents a description of the choices, discernment and mistakes, upon which the direction of the research were structured. The third chapter brings an understanding of the day-to-day life of the childhood education, starting from the observation of the interactions between adults and children and also between children with their pairs. The present study is an invitation to look at the child from the viewpont of those things that are typical of early childhood - the power of imagination, fantasy, creativity - that recognizes children as makers of culture and the culture that is produced in them.

Hitge, Marcel. "Fathers' coping with the day-to-day stressors of living with a child on the autistic spectrum". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/8628.

Texto completo
Resumen
In general there is very little research on the coping styles that the fathers of children suffering from Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) use in order to cope with the day-to-day demands and stressors that result from their child‘s unique condition. The research study focuses on the fathers of children on the autistic spectrum and how they cope with the stressors resulting from their children‘s condition on daily basis. The study made use of Bronfenbrenner‘s Ecosystemic Theory of Human Development as the guiding theoretical framework in exploring and describing this specific research domain. This was a qualitative study and it was phenomenological, descriptive and analytical in nature. The reason for this was to hear the voices of the fathers and explore in-depth how they deal with the daily stressors resulting from their children‘s condition. Semi-structured interviews were utilised where the fathers were asked to respond to an open-ended question. The data that was obtained from the fathers was analysed by means of content analysis. The sample size of the study was small (n=5) and other limitations included a small number of previous studies done on the fathers of children on the autistic spectrum. The literature that is available that focused on the fathers of ASD children are often old and might possibly be out dated. However, this study aimed to hear the voices of the fathers of children on the autistic spectrum and explore how they cope with the daily stressors. Therefore, this study will contribute to the literature on the fathers of ASD children.

Claney, Anita. "Living with multiple disabilities: Design for adult day program facilities". Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/278713.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis applies a design programming process to users with multiple, severe disabilities. The goal is to increase independent functioning, self-efficacy and competency through design. The example used in this thesis is the design of day program facilities for adults with multiple, severe disabilities. The existing state of disability in the United States is analyzed. This includes the models of disabilities, historical aspects of the disability movement, the design professions' response, multiple disabilities and day program facilities. Hershberger's Value-Centered programming process is discussed. Its' determinants of architecture are applied to day program facilities and the consumers who attend such programs. Generalized values and issues are presented as background information and applied to a hypothetical design project for a day program facility. Future applications and research are recommended to facilitate the process of including users with special needs in the design programming process.

Resumen
The aim of this paper is to present, analyse and explain the image of Millerites and Seventh-day Adventists in literature. Most of the authors studied are Americans, but for comparative purposes reference is also made to British and Australian writers. Millennialism and apocalypticism are pervasive themes in both American fiction and Adventist belief. An outline of these subjects is given by way of introduction to the thesis topic. Since Adventists are inexplicable without an understanding of the American culture in which they were nurtured, and by which they continue to be sustained, the literary works which mention them have been related to the historical context. Chapter I details the origin and development of both the Millerite movement and the Seventh-day Adventist Church from the 1840s to the late twentieth century. This provides the setting for and explanation of the religion. Chapter II deals with the "moral approach" which some writers have used in describing Adventists. Despite preaching imminent catastrophe as well as renewal and rebirth only through apocalypse, they have been seen as a virtuous people having moral integrity from which writers can draw important lessons. Chapter III describes the humorous, satirical approach to Adventists includinq recent postmodernist apocalyptic works which use irony as a comical method to depict the church and its followers. Adventists become figures of polarity and radica1 ambiguity. Chapter IV is a study of Adventists presented in literature as caricatures, stereotypes and parodies. Writers set out to debunk and ridicule. It is a convenient strategy for some authors who wish to avoid polemical discussion. Chapter V describes Black writers and Adventism. Over the past sixty years a number of African-American authors with a beckqround in Seventh-day Adventism have published their experience with this religious faith. All writers reject the religion and prefer to embrace the culture of their black heritage. The study silhouettes the difference and similarities among the various writers in the treatment of a single subject.

Smith, C. Julianne. "A Seal of Living Reality: The Role of Personal Expression in Latter-day Saint Discourse". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2006. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1301.

Texto completo
Resumen
A personal mode of discourse is central to Latter-day Saint culture. This mode is both pervasive throughout the culture and significant within it. Two specific genres-the personal experience narrative and the personal testimony-illustrate the importance of this discourse mode in LDS culture. Understanding the LDS personal mode of discourse is essential to properly understanding Mormonism. The personal orientation in LDS discourse mirrors a tendency towards personal expression which has become common throughout Western culture. This tendency has important roots in the Protestant religious movement. In particular, Puritanism represents a significant point of origin for American personal expression. Such expression has been further encouraged by the democratic climate of America and has become an important part of American religious discourse. However, LDS personal discourse cannot be explained by merely reducing the Latter-day Saint tradition to outside influences. Latter-day Saints, while deriving influence from many points, have fashioned a tradition of using personal expression in their religious discourse which deserves independent consideration. Within Latter-day Saint culture, the LDS tradition of personal discourse has special significance because it draws upon a host of doctrinal and cultural associations that are religiously significant to Latter-day Saints. LDS doctrines about the necessity of personal revelation and the importance of pragmatic action legitimate a religious focus on personal experience. Likewise, cultural encouragements towards personal religious involvement and spiritual expression foster a culture of personal expression. Because of these philosophies and commitments, LDS audiences respond powerfully to personal discourse. A personal style of discourse is important in mediating authority in the LDS religion. Personal expression is a means through which official LDS doctrine is conveyed. This mode of expression also allows individual Latter-day Saints to locate their identities within the structure of the LDS religion. Culturally-encouraged genres of personal expression allow LDS speakers to enact their religious beliefs. These genres reinforce fundamental LDS doctrines and serve an acculturating function in LDS culture. They teach Latter-day Saints how to experience, interpret, and speak about the world in ways consistent with the Latter-day Saint community's doctrines and commitments.

Resumen
Internet of Things (IoT) is a paradigm that has provided improvements for the day-to-day of society. This paradigm has been applied in several domains such as ambient assisted living (AAL), energy, transportation, environmental, urban monitoring, and healthcare. In the healthcare domain, IoT offers many advantages, such as enable continuous health monitoring, improve quality life and comfort, among others. A kind of IoT application in this domain is smart medicine box, a device that provides medicines treatment monitoring of users. It allows health professionals to verify users’ treatment compliance and supports decision-making. Most of the smart medicine box projects found in the literature are still expensive and do not address some characteristics of IoT systems such as scalability, latency, time to response, among others. Taking into account this scenario, this work proposes a low-cost IoT system prototype to support users during their medicines manipulation. The proposal employs edge-computing concept to add intermediate layer improving the communication among devices and services.

Resumen
Abstract Fresh water demands are increasing day by day because of growing population, industrialization, and increased living standards. Desalination technology has become a significant solution of fresh drinking water for many parts of the world. Lack of fresh water resources in dry environments has encouraged the establishment of desalination processes and developed technology to compensate for water scarcity. The MSF (multistage flash) desalination technique has received wide spread acceptance due to low temperature heat source (waste heat/inexpensive energy), simple construction high process reliability and simple maintenance. MSF typically has the highest water production cost among available desalination technologies, which can be reduced with using solar energy/co-generation. Since Abu Dhabi is in the solar belt region and is blessed with huge solar energy, MSF desalination can be powered by solar power in addition to industrial waste/fossil fuel energy, which will significantly reduce the cost as well as carbon, footprint. In this research, multistage flash desalination is modelled using ASPEN HYSYS package V8. We have designed each components of the system, mostly heating source, vacuum/flash chambers, heat exchangers and developed the whole system. Some parametric study, i.e. feed rate, top brine temperature, heat input, pressure, productivity etc. of multistage flash desalination system has been conducted in this research. Two case studies have been conducted and found a relation between feed flow rate and water production rate as well as chamber pressure with vapor formation. This design will help to build the pilot plant, do experimental test and validate the model.

Resumen
A new robotic gripper was designed and constructed for Activities of Daily Living (ADL) to be used with the new Wheelchair-Mounted Robotic Arm developed at USF. Two aspects of the new gripper made it unique; one is the design of the paddles, and the other is the design of the actuation mechanism that produces parallel motion for effective gripping. The paddles of the gripper were designed to grasp a wide variety objects with different shapes and sizes that are used in every day life. The driving mechanism was designed to be simple, light, effective, safe, self content, and independent of the robotic arm attached to it.
