Our research objective was to evaluate the genetic parameters in the populations of Akhal-Teke horses in 4 countries: Czech Republic, Russia, Estonia and Switzerland. The experiment involved a total of 325 Akhal-Teke horses; 121 horses came from the Czech Republic, 152 were from Russia, 28 were from Estonia and 24 horses came from Switzerland. For the divided database of micro satellites we evaluated the following parameters: effective number of alleles, frequency of alleles for the groups of horses; the observed heterozygosity (HO); the expected heterozygosity (HE); the inbreeding coefficient (Fis); and the genetic distance. The researched population is polymorphous. The population in the Czech Republic differs from the other three countries in the numbers of alleles per locus. The Czech population also includes Akhal-Teke horses which are not purebred Akhal-Teke horses. A confirmation of this fact is the effective number of alleles. The population in the Czech Republic exhibits the highest mean number of effective alleles. The Akhal-Teke population in Estonia exhibits the highest mean observed heterozygosity. By contrast, the population in the Czech Republic exhibits the lowest mean observed heterozygosity. In the Czech Republic the mean Fis value is a positive number indicating a reduced number of heterozygotes in the Czech Akhal-Teke population. The genetic distance is the highest between populations of horses bred in Russia and Estonia. The genetic distance is the lowest between populations of Akhal-Teke horses bred in Russia and in the Czech Republic.

Jaroslav Durych, a popular Czech Catholic poet and essayist, began his weekly column in Lidové listy's (People's News) 10 May 1923 issue with the following proclamation: “The Czech Nation must be Catholic!” What did Durych mean by this puzzling statement? The majority of Czechs in the new Czechoslovak state considered themselves at least nominally Catholic. Yet Durych's article did not address the confessional status of Czechoslovakia's population, nor did it address religious differences between Czechs and Slovaks. Instead, Durych concerned himself with the representation of the Czech nation in popular mythology and official symbolism. He demanded that the Czech national symbols reflect the country's majority religion and not the Protestant experiment of the late Middle Ages.

At first sight, both the role and the position of religion in the Czech Republic may appear to confirm the secularization thesis. The results of sociological surveys and census statistics show a clear decline in religious faith and practice. According to last national census of 2001 more than 59 per cent of Czech people declared themselves to be ‘non-believers’, while only 32 per cent of Czechs declared themselves to be ‘believers’. And if we look at the statistics that concern the intensity of religious life, we can see a more ‘secularized picture’ of Czech society. For example, only 5 per cent of the Czech population attends religious services regularly, and only 20 per cent of population is willing to contribute 1,50 euro a month to a religious group or church. But do these data present a true picture of secularization in Czech society? What exactly is the attitude of Czech society towards religion? These and other questions are examined in this article.

Abstract This paper describes the process and results of a questionnaire survey. The research objective was to determine whether the Czech population has interest in water management. The subject to the creation of the survey was the fact that one of the main objectives of water policy of the European Union, on which water policy of the Czech Republic is based, is the need to increase public awareness of water issues and their involvement in the decision making process. The partial objective was to determine whether there is a difference in interest between those living in the countryside and those living in the city. In this paper a method of quantitative data collection - a questionnaire survey was used. The results show that people have interest in water management. There are no differences between the views of people who live in rural areas and those who live in the city. Great interest is in water supply and related development of water supply and sewerage systems.

AbstractNowadays, personal data is becoming both increasingly relevant and extensively shared over the internet. Individual privacy is often at risk as personal and contact information are a frequent object of commercial transactions. This situation recently triggered the implementation of a new data-protection regulation: General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This study analyses privacy protection from the citizens’ and consumers' points of view. The authors apply quantitative methods to primary data sampled from the population of the Czech Republic (aged 15+). Individual willingness to share personal data is evaluated along with the spectrum of situations where such data is requested and along with corresponding GDPR-related individual stances. According to the data analyzed, Czech population perceives GDPR measures as mostly useful yet somewhat bothersome. Also, individuals are not convinced that the regulation could deliver any fundamental changes to processes that involve handling of personal data. In general, respondents feel concerned by the intensification of demands for signing data sharing consents and by similar data processing interactions. However, individual levels of willingness to share various types of personal and contact information are sound and stable.

The aim of the thesis is to describe, analyse and discuss the development of spatial population dynamics in the Czech Republic between 1989 and 2007. Demographic structure and migration, the two components of spatial population dynamics, are analysed using two spatial dimensions, the urban-suburban-rural gradient and the core-periphery region distinction, using quantitative analyses, including gravity regression modelling of migration. The analysis primarily focuses on domestic migration as the main vehicle of spatial population dynamics. It discusses the structure, determinants, and temporal evolution of migration and its consequences on the population structure in different spatial categories. The thesis indicates that suburbanisation has recently become the main factor influencing Czech spatial population dynamics. The key factor determining migration destination is the social status of migrants, whereas age has only secondary importance. However, since Czechs are not very mobile, population dispersal is less large-scale than in Western-Europe. This explains why recent domestic migration patterns have had only a small measurable influence on the social or demographic structures of the population across spatial categories.

Through close textual analysis of 20th century Czech anthropological texts from the Revivalist and Socialist periods and contemporary social research conducted after the Velvet Revolution, I demonstrate certain prominent discourses of identity developed in early Bohemian anthropology and their continuities in present day popular discourses. In each period, identity is deeply intertwined with teleological theories of history with Czech populations at the apex of cultural evolutionary development. In the Revivalist period this apex was believed to be the democratic nation state, transitioning to a Marxist nation state in the Socialist period, and in the contemporary period is conceived of as a neoliberal nation state. A major function of anthropology in the Revivalist and Socialist periods was to legitimate either period’s respective teleological theory and Czech possession of relevant values as 'objective' and 'natural' fact, a general mode of discourse which continued in the contemporary period in numerous editorials in the 1990s on the advantages of capitalism. The contemporary manifestation has particularly noteworthy consequences for the Roma minority, which I argue has provided Czech discourses with an ethnic category 'anti-thetical' to their own identity, providing a 'repository' for negative Czech self-stereotypes emerging from collaboration in the Socialist period.

The life insurance is an integral part of financial market, although changing its importance during the development. This thesis aims to carry out a research focused on the approach and attitude of the Czech population to the life insurance and its resulting analysis. The research was conducted through a questionnaire survey effected on an independent sample of the Czech population in the number of 185 respondents and a case study MetLife insurance company. The thesis does not neglect the theoretical background, current trends in the life insurance and the future prognosis. The results of analysis refer to the dependence of approach to the life insurance on the factors of age, the number of household members, the actual amount of outstanding liabilities and the gross monthly income. The lack of knowledge of respondents on the profitability, the risk and the liquidity of their life insurance policies and its dependence on the factor of achieved education were proved. In the case of a higher number of concluded life insurance contracts they diversify the risk and use different insurers. It also came out that the life insurance has recently kept losing its original meaning in the sense of risk instrument and is perceived still more as a savings and an invesment instrument. Although the current approach is not the rational reasoning, I continue to assume the increasing importance of unit linked life insurance.

The main goal of the diploma thesis is to present a complex view of the online communication, standing on three main pillars. The first pillar is the market environment that creates the basic conditions for the online communication. Second important point is the digital communication itself. In the thesis there are described the specifics of the mostly utilized digital media. The last key element is the internet user. Thanks to many segmentation criteria we can distinguish between the users and define unique characteristics of the users that can be useful for market targeting and positioning. For that reason, the main theme of the practical part of the thesis is the segmentation of the internet population of Czech Republic. The segmentation was performed via advanced analytical and segmentation software Data Analyzer that is working with the database MML-TGI collected by the research agency Medián.

In recent decades, the fact of an aging population has become one of the most discussed phenomena in all economically developed countries. Its main consequence is the increasing number of people relying on the assistance of another person. The goal of this thesis is to provide quantitative estimation and suggestions of the possible future need for social services for the elderly within the Czech Republic as such and also with the reference to the evolution of the situation in individual regions of the country. The introductory chapter deals with the demographic development of population in the Czech Republic and in all its regions individually, on the basis of which an obvious and steady trend of population aging is confirmed in the past and future years. The second chapter focuses on the characteristic of regional facilities in selected social services as well as on the costs and financing of such services. On the grounds of findings from the previous chapter, the final chapter is dedicated to the estimation of the future evolution of the care recipients in the senior age groups in all regions in the Czech Republic. All this consistently on the basis of the projection of the evolution of the population until the year 2050 and projections of the structure of the beneficiaries of care allowance by level of the dependence in the year 2010. The result of the analysis indicates that the existing capacity of social services for elderly will not be sufficient due to the trend of aging population. With regard to that fact, some possible measures, that could be a future source of a solution of this unfavorable situation, are suggested in the conclusion of this thesis.

Abstract This chapter discusses the Czech social security system from the perspective of migrant workers and their families. The Czech Republic is a central European country whose population is quite homogeneous, so its migration policy is not a very welcoming one. Access to social security benefits for third-country nationals is connected to long-term residence. EU citizens have equal access to social benefits as Czech nationals. The chapter explains basic characteristics of the Czech social protection system (unemployment benefits, health care system, pension insurance, family benefits and social assistance benefits), with a special emphasis on accessibility for migrant workers and their families.

AbstractThe Czech Republic has become the target of immigration over only the last three decades; currently, migrants compose 4.5% of the population. Governments in the previous decade have supported the vision of short-term labour migration, and foreigners face many administrative obstacles given the difficult legislation. We employ the concept of regulatory ritualism to grasp the distinctive features of the Czech system. Following Power (The audit society. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1997) and Braithwaite (Regulatory capitalism: how it works, ideas for making it work better. Edward Elgar, Cheltenham/Northampton, 2008), we see regulation as a ritualised practice that comforts the public and cements the dominant normative order of migration policy. In this chapter, we introduce the historical and political context of migration policy, its institutional design, the Act on Residence of Foreign Nationals in the Czech Republic, the position of foreigners in Czech labour law, Czech integration policy and the consequences of recent institutional design for migrants. The main barriers of integration are difficult administration, poor knowledge of the language and precarious working conditions. Regulatory ritualism, a result of chaotic and unsystematic legislative work, is characterized by losing focus on achieving the goals or outcomes themselves, it establishes a climate of mutual distrust among those actors involved and places obstacles to collaboration between public authorities and migrants themselves.

A new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spread across the world from Wuhan (China) in the first quarter of 2020. The goal of our research in this paper is to map the extension of coronavirus cases across the regions of the Czech Republic and to describe the trends in dissemination within the regions. The results of a descriptive analysis of cases in the regions of the Czech Republic are reported. The survey was based on the reports by the Regional Hygiene Station of the Czech Republic The number of days to reach 100 cases in the regions, the average age of patients in the region and the median age of the population in individual regions were calculated. The number of days to reach 100 cases in a region shows in the speed of the spread of the virus in the region. The regions with the most aggressive beginning of the infection are not those currently reporting the highest numbers of infection. Concerning the division of cases into individual regions, the Prague region is the leader in absolute numbers. The Karlovarský region, together with Prague, is the most affected if taking into account the size of the population.

Map reading is an important skill of the human population which varies from person to person depending on the age, education and many other circumstances. It is expected that some groups of adult population have higher skills in this area. Soldiers, architects, geography teachers and others belong to this group of people. The skills in reading paper maps are disappearing in current digital world. This is also observed in the case of students of the University of Defense in Brno. 228 students were tested in map reading and geographical knowledge of the Czech Republic to verify this fact. The examination of the map reading skills took place over a standard topographic map at a scale of 1 : 25 000 from the production of the Geographic Service of ACR. Testing of geographical knowledge of the Czech Republic was focused on drawing the map of district towns, rivers and geomorphological units of the Czech Republic. The results confirmed the initial assumptions about the decreasing level of these skills. In addition, there were also significant differences between individual groups of students caused mostly because of previous education as well as the currently studied specialization. The same testing was done on students of the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University in Brno to confirm these conclusions. This group of students achieved worse results in map reading, but on the other hand, they have better knowledge of the geography of the Czech Republic.

The paper analyzes the determining factors affecting Czech film attendance in the years 2003–2017 and places this topic into the context of the information asymmetry faced by film-goers. Using the regression (OLS) model and a unique population-level dataset (415 observations), the hypothesis of a positive relationship between film attendance and audience rating is confirmed. The increase in audience ratings by Czech-Slovak Film Database website’s users by one percentage point is, ceteris paribus, associated with an increase in attendance by 1.8%. Factors which have proven to determine film attendance also include: specific genres; film sequels; casting of a popular actor, actress or director; the personality of the director Zdeněk Troška; the Czech Lion Awards; and a premiere in certain years. In the decision-making process of a viewer who faces information asymmetry one can rely on these determinants as economic signals and on viewer ratings as information from an intermediary.
