Summary This article assesses Francis Whyte Ellis’s (1777–1819) “Note to the Introduction” to Alexander Duncan Campbell’s (1789–1857) Grammar of the Teloogoo Language (1816) in the context of the history of comparative linguistics in India. The idea of a ‘South Indian family of languages’, later named ‘Dravidian’ by Robert Caldwell in 1856, was first proposed by Ellis in 1816, and so a case could be made to claim for him the beginnings of a comparative methodology in the study of Dravidian languages. AbstractThis article examines how the East India Company's 1856 annexation of the Indian Kingdom of Awadh informed British Conservative responses to the Indian Revolt in 1857 and 1858. Addressing scholarship on Britain's reaction to the revolt and political engagement with Indian empire, this study reveals that Conservatives interpreted this event with a veneration for locality and prescription. Criticism from company officials and Awadh's deposed royal family informed Conservative perceptions that British exploitation and westernization were responsible for military rebellion and popular uphe

In 1855 Fr. Otto Hartmann Dobgan took the initiative of establishing a house for the confirmed in Bezławki. In his view, such a centre would counterbalance the proselytism of the Catholic priests in Święta Lipka. They took the children from poor Evangelical families who were then preparing for their First Holy Communion. A small house in Bezławki, intended for the confirmed, was purchased on 1 October, 1856. It was designated for use a month later. At first, eight pupils lived there free of charge while preparing for their confirmation. A decision was quickly made to build a new facility. The
