Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to identify if and how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) lessons help student progress toward achieving benchmarks in AASL (American Association of School Librarians) 21st Century Learner Standards. This study was conducted in the library media center with 48 kindergarten students participating. The researcher taught mini-lessons for the AASL Standards prior to students participating in the STEM activities. The data were collected on 23 benchmarks included in the AASL Standards. Students were rated on these Standards as beginning, progressing, or achieving. Data analysis indicated that the STEM lessons were an effective means for providing the students with developmentally appropriate ways to make progress toward the AASL Standards. Data analysis also revealed that the STEM lessons were effective in reducing the number of students rated as beginning, as well as pushing some students into the achieving category.

Abstract:
Can we ever truly understand what motivates us to act in particular ways? Can we draw inferences from our understanding of the actions of one to explain the behaviors of many? Can we ever hope to develop broad theories that make human behavior comprehensible? This thesis is inclined to say no. However, this "no" is only a tentative answer. Throughout this thesis we will discuss, observe, and analyze these questions of human behavior in the context of organizational theory: a discipline that is essentially a study of how humans act when they group themselves into bureaucratic organizations. In this thesis, we will use Naval Special Warfare and its NSW-21 transformation effort as an example of how an organization can change, even when that change seems to go against the grain of popular wisdom. We have approached this thesis from the perspective of a curious workman who has just opened the back of a clock to see what makes the timepiece tick. As we analyze what makes Naval Special Warfare tick, we will tell the story of the NSW-21 transformation. In this work, we seek to satisfy three objectives: 1) to provide a broad understanding of NSW-21 and its implications, 2) to explain why NSW-21 was a smart move for the Naval Special Warfare community, and 3) to use Naval Special Warfare's recent transformation endeavors as a means to understand how and why groups must organize, reorganize, and transform themselves in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Essentially, this thesis can be boiled down to one simple question: "Why does the NSW-21 transformation make sense for Naval Special Warfare?"

Abstract:
In Waltons Stores (Interstate) v Maher,3 the High Court revolutionised both promissory estoppel and proprietary estoppel by establishing a cohesive doctrine of equitable estoppel. This paper demonstrates this doctrine by a strict analysis of the ratio decidendi of the High Court cases. The doctrine identified operates as a cause of action, is capable of attracting positive remedies, can operate without any express representation or upon an unclear representation, focusses on unconscionability and is not constrained by many of the technical requirements of either proprietary or promissory estoppel. The paper applies the same analysis of ratio decidendi to subsequent High Court cases to demonstrate that the doctrine of equitable estoppel has not been limited, and has instead been strengthened. The paper demonstrates that state courts are applying the doctrine of equitable estoppel inconsistently with the High Court precedent, which results in differing approaches being taken to the doctrine. The paper demonstrates that this is unfortunate because the doctrine established by the High Court is effective and not in need of revision.

<p> This study focuses on mass civic adult education reform. It inquires how lessons learned from the Chautauqua Movement, a movement that was funded through philanthropy and exploded throughout the United States and Canada in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, can be applied to popular civic adult education reform today. At its peak, the Chautauqua Movement engaged more than 50 million people annually (or almost 50% of the total population at the time), playing a major role in building shared values among Protestant dominations, and kept adults without access to formal education informed. With the Chautauqua Movement&rsquo;s contraction, a void in mass civic adult education was never filled.</p><p> The aim of this inquiry is threefold. First, it aims to understand the tenets of the Chautauqua movement and how this movement became so popular among adults. Second, it seeks to understand why the Chautauqua Movement declined. Third, this inquiry discusses lessons of the Chautauqua Movement for twenty-first century civic adult education. The approach of this inquiry is a historical case study and uses archives, mapping, and interviews for a mixed methods view of this very complex phenomenon in American history.</p><p>

Abstract:
This research looks at social policy making in Venezuela and Brazil with the objective of alleviating poverty, with special focus on meeting Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that were set in 2000. Considering the leftist democratic governments that have been established in Latin America since Hugo Chávez was elected president in 1998, and later with Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in 2002, the research seeks to understand and illustrate what nuances exist in strategy, ideas and implementation of social policy that would positively affect the underprivileged for a more equal and just society. The two countries have deep historical and structural inequalities from slavery, colonialism, imbalanced distribution of resources and like most developing nations of the Global South, have had to endure structural adjustments that have entrenched poverty levels further. Arguments in the past have been made for economic prosperity and economic growth as good indicators for development, however, the research takes a comparative analysis on how Venezuela (through Barrio Adentro and multiple state driven Missions) and Brazil (state supported Bolsa Familia and Universal Health System), have targeted health and education as the primary sectors not just to transform society but also because it is through these sectors that the most effective and efficient manner to measure human development which has thus far been neglected. The research also examines the leadership of the countries which speaks to the differing approaches adopted, style, rhetoric and political realities; and how they have been received not just domestically, but also internationally. The outcomes of the research illustrate a good link between literacy, education and health and a healthy level of state intervention that requires reciprocal social participation for programmes to succeed. Brazil and Venezuela have shown notable creativity and effectiveness in this regard.

The diploma thesis aims to discourse how China´s competitiveness has developed in the 21st century, with a special focus on human capital as one of the key factors of production that greatly fosters competitive advantage. The first chapter builds up a theoretical framework for the research part of the thesis. It reviews the concepts of competitiveness, Michael Porter´s diamond, and the theory of human capital. The second chapter examines trends and challenges of China´s competitive advantage according to Michael Porter´s diamond model. The third chapter evaluates the development of China´s human capital, its cultivation, current state, and surveys the generation Y´s attitudes to human capital.

Through analysis of large-scale ocean gyre dynamics from simulation results of the ocean component of the Community Earth System Model version 1 - the Parallel Ocean Program version 2 (CESM1-POP2) - this study builds upon existing research suggesting recent changes in the circulation of global subtropical gyres with respect to the South Atlantic Ocean. Results all point to an increase in the total counterclockwise circulation and a southward displacement of the sub- tropical gyre system. The northern boundary of the South Atlantic Subtropical Gyre (SASG) is represented by the bifurcation of the southern branch of the South Equatorial Current (sSEC) into the North Brazil Undercurrent/Current (NBUC/NBC) to the north and the Brazil Current (BC) to the south. The sSEC Bifurcation Latitude (SBL) dictates the partition between waters flowing poleward and those flowing equatorward. Although a northward migration of the SBL would be expected with the gyre spin up and associated poleward transport increase, the SBL migrates southwards at a rate of 0.051o/yr, in conjunction to a substantial increase in the equatorward advection of waters within the sSEC-SBL-NBUC system, which is included in the upper-branch of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation.<br>Através de análises da dinâmica de grande-escala do giro oceânico, proveniente dos resultados de simulação da componente oceânica do Community Earth System Model versão 1 - o Parallel Ocean Program versão 2 (CESM1-POP2) - este estudo se baseia em estudos prévios sugerindo mudanças recentes na circulação dos giros subtropicais globais, com respeito ao oceano Atlântico Sul. Os resultados apontam para uma intensificação da circulação anti-horária e um deslocamento para sul de todo o sistema do giro subtropical. A borda norte do Giro Subtropical do Atlântico Sul (GSAS) é representada pela bifurcação do ramo sul da Corrente Sul Equatorial (CSEs) em Subcorrente/Corrente Norte do Brasil (SCNB/CNB) para norte e Corrente do Brasil (CB) para sul. A Latitude da Bifurcação da CSEs (LBC) determina a partição entre as águas fluindo em direção ao pólo e aquelas fluindo em direção ao equador. Embora seja esperada uma migração para norte da LBC com a aceleração da circulação do giro e consequente aumento do transporte em direção ao pólo, a LBC migra para sul a uma taxa de 0.051o/ano. Esta migração ocorre em conjunto à um aumento substancial na advecção de águas em direção ao equador com o sistema CSEs-LBC-SCNB, o qual está incluso no ramo superior da Circulação de Revolvimento Meridional do Atlântico.

CHDS State/Local<br>Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>The problem of how preparedness and response organizations effectively elicit, develop, capture and disseminate organizational knowledge has been difficult to answer. Although techniques such as the after action review (AAR) have been practiced for over 40 years, not much is known about how it actually works at a theoretical level or if it still has viability in an increasingly complex world. Research also suggests that within many agencies, the AAR is not being practiced regularly and the lessons learned from the AARs being completed are not distributed or implemented effectively. An over-reliance on AARs and lessons learned might in fact be creating more harm than help. The complexity of modern day exercises and emergencies demands that responders be able not just to apply learning from past events but also to reflect, act, and learn in real time. Determining how to create the proper individual and organizational conditions for response professionals to make sense of and act upon the various learning opportunities inherent both during and after an event is crucial. Thinking of the problem within a larger emergency learning framework (ELF) and identifying learning as its own discrete organizational capability are recommended as potential solutions.

Abstract:
The objective of the diploma project was to repurpose the area of military barracks in the residential neighbourhood of Černá Pole in Brno. The thesis sets out to design a new urbanistic concept within the already existing structure, devise a new town square, a park and a town hall for the district of Brno-Sever. In this project, I aimed to fill in the chasm in the current construction and create a new lively neighbourhood. The selected area is to provide its residents with high standard of living and a rich selection of facilities. The essential aspect was to focus on different types of the residential development that surrounds the given perimeter. The eastern and the southern side reveals terraced houses and family houses, while on the west side the conservatory of the Mendel University is laid out and in the north high-rises can be seen. Through this project a new space emerges, activated through various types of residential development while blending with the residual structures. Also, another goal was to design a new town hall for Brno-Sever with a cultural centre, situate a new kindergarten in the area and construct a community centre with sports facilities. Due to the lack of more prominent town square in the city district Černá Pole, the positioning of this feature was highly significant in my project. The designed square should be multifunctional, enabling the residents or wider public a wide range of utilization.

Abstract:
The topic of the thesis is a design of an urban structure fitting into the 21st century amidst former military barracks in Brno Černá Pole. The area is square-shaped and defined by the borders of the streets Provazníkova, Mathonova, Bieblova, and Generála Píky. The area is currently divided among three owners: Ministry of Defence & Armed Forces, Resort of Justice, and National Cyber and Information Security Agency (NÚKIB). The premise of the thesis is to build a new city quarter which would provide Brno's citizens with housing solutions, job opportunities, cultural and leisure centres not only for the new but also for the current inhabitants. The design includes also several blocks which aggregate multiple functions: housing, commercial premises, and administrative buildings. Generous volume of space has been given to public spaces, most prominently a square with a new town hall for Brno-sever, culture centre and a park. The examined area is situated between two busy roads which is why designing a suitable connection of the area and the overall traffic situation within the area was essential. This thesis aims to unify the area, cut short the traffic connections and create a compact city quarter close to the centre of Brno.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the design of a sustainable urban structure, based on a medieval city, in the 21st century. The main idea of the proposal is the creation of a new part of the town Náměšť nad Oslavou with the aim of connecting it with the existing urban structure and at the same time extending it to the missing elements of the developing city. The newly built area is designed with an emphasis on the construction of new residential housing with civil facilities services, while designing and creating public spaces and private parts of courtyards and villas. The aim of the thesis was to design a growing territory so that it adapts to the needs of today's society and at the same time became part of the existing city. From an urban point of view, based on the theme of the thesis, the aim is to combine elements of a medieval city with elements of a city built in the 21st century. The concept is based on a planned network of streets with multifunctional buildings designed for trade and production in the ground floor and housing on other floors, which originated in the medieval city. The emblem of the medieval city was the emotional perception of the connection of strict lines and strange shapes into one whole, and therefore buildings were designed in a new part of the city for living with almost clean geometric lines, while the objects of civil facilities are organic shapes.

The aim of the design was to create a functional urban structure in Náměšť nad Oslavou, which works on the principles of a modern city of the 21st century, but is also inspired by elements of a medieval city. So it is a marriage of the old with the new. On this basis, a compact functional structure was designed, which functions as a complement to the existing development and does not serve as a separate unit. In the new development, therefore, elements were designed to help improve the quality of life throughout the city. Emphasis was placed on the unique character of the development, a car-free center, plenty of green space and work with natural resources. The design has a lifespan of tens to hundreds of years. The proposed development can later be extended to the space, but also to the height.

There are few documented cases and active programs of environmental education (EA) that support schools and teachers in their teaching for the care of the environment in the State of Guanajuato, Mexico. Two cases will be made in this research. The first, from 2001 to 2003, where the State Ecology Institute (IEEG) developed the project ‘Green School, the Agenda 21 of the educational center’, so that it addressed the needs of the schools in the field of EA, and they were helped and guided in the process of creating their own School Agenda 21, giving them training and the advice necessary to develop tools on environmental school promoters. The second case from the nineties, is currently lead by the Foundation of Support for children, Guanajuato Child A. C., which has developed an alternative model of sustainable child central development, and where there is an EA program for primary schools called ‘Friends of Nature’. The two cases are finally compared to give an assessment of their benefits<br>A l’estat de Guanajuato, Mèxic, hi ha pocs casos documentats i actius en matèria de programes d’Educació Ambiental (EA) que suportin a les escoles i als mestres en la seva labor docent per a la cura del Medi Ambient. En aquesta recerca se’n coneixeran dos casos. El primer, de 2001 a 2003, a on l’Institut d’Ecologia del Estat (IEEG) va desenvolupar el Projecte ‘Escuela Verde, La Agenda 21 del Centro Educativo’ per atendre les necessitats de les escoles en matèria de EA, i on aquestes van ser assessorades i guiades al procés de crear la seva pròpia Agenda 21 Escolar, donant-los la capacitació i assessoria necessària per a la formació de multiplicadors (promotors) ambientals escolars. El segon cas, a partir dels anys noranta, és el que actualment hi condueix la Fundación de Apoyo Infantil Guanajuato, A. In 1985, Taha was found guilty on apostasy charges and sentenced to death. The present work goes over how Taha’s interpretation differs from the Qur’an’s traditional reading whilst also discussing its insertion on the concept of liberal Islam and its impact. This work seeks to contribute with the body of researches related to liberal Islam in Brazil<br>Essa dissertação tem como objetivo analisar e contextualizar a obra A Segunda Mensagem do Islã de Mahmoud Muhammad Taha, publicada em 1967, no Sudão. The aim of the master thesis is to characterize and evaluate the current security system in East Asia, to show the security strategies of the system actors and the existing friction points, and to assess the future development of the security system in place. For this purpose the author first defines the East Asia's security system using the conceptual tools of three international relations theories, namely neo-realism, neo-liberalism, and constructivism. In the following section, the security strategies and security issues are discussed. In the final section, the international relations theories are used again to assess the stability of the current security system and lastly the prospects for a change of the system are evaluated.

Because it is apparently a very broad and diffuse idea, the Delors Report, published in Brazil under the title Education - a treasure to be discovered was adopted as a starting point. The impact of this report was examined in the elaboration of the National Curricular Parameters for High School, specifically regarding this dimensions and perspectives related to the conception of knowledge and qualification. In terms of functions, some issues stand out: how to create and implement new ways of performing museums? What are the changes necessary for the museum to account for the exposure and conservation of work in new media? What is the position of the museum in the face of new technologies, both in its use in the management and documentation of the collection and in the aid of education projects and support for visitation? For both the established museums and the museums being created today, the challenges that the new media present are enormous. They are ephemeral and dematerialized actions, works in process, built collectively, that manifest themselves in the direct clash with the ubiquitous time of cyberspace, generating strategies that subvert, recreate, amplify and deconstruct the meaning often anticipated by the digital context. In this way, the balance between conservation and exposure is threatened by the very dynamics of artistic production that stresses spatiotemporal distances, breaks with the paradigm of contemplation and calls for intervention, participation and intensifies mediation with works. In this sense, the present research addresses not only the productions and the experience of the museums in the context of the new media that cross the MAM-SP, but also points to questions to discuss the perspectives of the digital aesthetics in contemporary museums<br>A presente pesquisa propõe que se compreenda as narrativas existentes entre as novas mídias e o Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo a partir de um breve mapeamento de instituições que atuam na intersecção com as mídias digitais como exercício de produção de enfrentamento, ou em circunstâncias criativas que exploram novas linguagens e abordagens. No plano das funções, algumas questões se sobressaem: como criar e implementar novas formas de atuação dos museus? Quais são as mudanças necessárias para que o museu dê conta da exposição e da conservação dos trabalhos em novas mídias? Qual é o posicionamento do museu frente às novas tecnologias, no que se refere ao seu uso no gerenciamento e na documentação da coleção, bem como no auxílio aos projetos de educação e no apoio à visitação? Tanto para os museus já estabelecidos, como para os que atualmente estão sendo criados, os desafios que as novas mídias apresentam são enormes. São ações efêmeras e desmaterializadas, obras em processo, construídas coletivamente, que se manifestam no embate direto com o tempo ubíquo do ciberespaço, gerando estratégias que subvertem, recriam, ampliam e desconstroem o sentido muitas vezes previsto pelo contexto digital. Dessa forma, o equilíbrio entre a conservação e a exposição se vê ameaçado pela própria dinâmica da produção artística que tensiona as distâncias espaçotemporais, rompe com o paradigma da contemplação e solicita a intervenção, a participação, intensificando a mediação com as obras. La tesi sviluppa una lettura critica dell’architettura scolastica in differenti contesti Europei che usa lo spazio fisico a e il suo ambiente circostante come risorsa per l’apprendimento. La ricerca si propone di utilizzare alcuni casi studio individuati nell’ambito del vasto investimento del Regno Unito denominato “Building Schools for the Future” per fornire alcune linee guida per il progetto e la gestione delle scuole secondarie del 21° secolo in Italia.<br>The thesis explores the role of school architecture and his surrounding built environment as educational mediators through the innovation of educational spaces and the creation of cultural interactions between school, neighborhood and other educational organizations. The aim of the thesis is first to understand theoretical ideas linking pedagogy and learning with architectural, landscape and urban design, including reference to celebrated Italian examples from the 20th century. It develops a critical reading of scholastic architecture in different European contexts that use the physical space and their surrounding environment as a resource for learning. The research also purposes to use case studies from the UK’s vast investment in Building Schools for the Future to provide some guidance for the design and management of secondary schools in Italy for the 21st century.

O quadro teórico que embasa este trabalho é composto dos modelos de competência comunicativa intercultural, o conceito de cultura no sentido restrito (small culture), os pilares para a educação para o século 21 e os princípios da transdisciplinaridade. As questões que nortearam esta investigação podem ser resumidas em se e como os professores identificam os elementos culturais presentes no livro-texto de modo a desenvolver a competência comunicativa intercultural dos alunos dentro dos princípios da transdisciplinaridade. Uma análise dos livros-texto usados, das aulas observadas, e das respostas dos professores a uma entrevista e a três questionários demonstra que é preciso que haja um tratamento mais sistemático em relação a questões culturais e à aprendizagem intercultural nos currículos para cursos de formação de professores sejam eles de nível universitário ou não. Esta tese também discute as implicações pedagógicas de um ensino de língua inglesa como L2 propondo uma série de princípios pedagógicos e sugerindo algumas atividades para o desenvolvimento da competência comunicativa intercultural que podem ser usados em sala de aula.<br>Salvador

This diploma thesis is written on one of the least investigated and the least known areas of the Russian literature - contemporary Russian poetry. The aim of this thesis is to propose certain perception of, on one hand, the artistic patterns and contents, and, on the other hand, of the historical, cultural, social and aesthetic significance of the contemporary poetry. The key principles of the current poetic scene include the shift of the literary paradigm, aesthetic pluralism, and variety of the artistic styles. This work consists of three parts. The first chapter describes the theory of the forming of the post- Soviet literature, as well as its state after the second half of the 1980's until the present day, in the context of social, cultural and literary factors. The features and certain phenomena of the current literary process are also discussed within the first chapter. The second chapter examines the main aesthetic trends of the contemporary Russian poetry. The last part of the thesis provides the look upon the problematic and thematic characteristics as well as the stylistic features of the contemporary poetry. Archaeology plays an important role in the determination and the comprehension of the co-existence of identities between past and contemporary cultures. The archaeologist is required to think beyond temporal and physical borders throughout his studies of the human past, in pursuit of uncovering the material remains of past cultures whose settlement patterns do not reflect the current political and geographical organization into nationstates. In Part I of this thesis, entitled “Archaeological Practices in the 21st century”, an overview of a wide variety of ethical concerns related to the production of archaeological knowledge will be given first. The overview will be contextualized within the broader framework of the cultural practices and politics of the archaeological practice, understood as both a humanistic and scientific discipline, in the 21st century. For this purpose, the ethical, political and social implications of the choices made by European archaeologists working abroad will be discussed in some detail. The archaeologists’ involvement abroad has an impact on the establishment, maintenance and disruption of relationships between local communities and foreign investigators conducting archaeological research. Likewise, some of the most prominent implications of the practice of archaeology in zones of conflict will be introduced to the reader. Part II, entitled “Archaeology and Philosophy”, constitutes of a philosophical reflection on the current state of the archaeological practice in agreement with the preceding chapters of this thesis. The intention is to develop a philosophical framework within which it is possible to analyze many of the transformations of the last hundred years which have taken place in the archaeological profession. The alterations have taken place both due to the improvement of the technology available for archaeological excavations and because of the conduction of investigations abroad, which are never situated outside of the geopolitical condition of the 20th century and the early 21st century. The philosophical oeuvre of Paul Ricoeur, in particular his writings on history, ideology, utopia and his conception of the capable human being will serve as the background against which to describe the possibility of a different form of dialogue between archaeology and philosophy. First, the relationship between history, memory and the archaeological study of material cultures will be discussed with reference to Ricoeur’s philosophical thought. Different aspects of the french philosopher’s oeuvre will pave the way for a philosophical reflection on autonomy and vulnerability in the context of the archaeological practice in the 21st century. The illustration of these aspects will include Ricoeur’s conception of the capable human being, the triad of the ethical, the moral and practical reason and a Ricoeurian understanding of the political subject. Lastly, sue to the claims and beliefs expressed by different authoritative orders operating within the vast archaeological field questions on vulnerability and autonomy must be reconsidered in light of Ricoeur’s dialectic of ideology and utopia.

Through this research, we compare the image of millennials described in these articles with the one offered by the Spanish press and diverse magazines. We have also performed an analysis of cinematographic objects of a selection of films in which they appear represented. This has helped us get a clear definition of millennials from: the academic atmosphere, the main newspapers and magazines, films whose main characters are millennials, and the documentary project The nineties made me do it, that contains the interviews of eleven Spanish millennials who were asked about all the topics brought up in articles and films. Through a thematic analysis of this material all the representations are compared and divided in topics to clarify some of the stereotypes that are attributed to this generation and to define millennials in all aspects of their life, including the psychological impacts of the world they were raised in.

1 ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to describe, analyze and explain major influences on the development of dystopian literature of the 21st century written in English. Those influences are described and illustrated on selected literary works, specifically on Oryx and Crake (2003) by Margaret Atwood, Never Let Me Go (2005) by Kazuo Ishiguro, The Hunger Games (2008) by Suzanne Collins, Matched (2010) by Ally Condie, and The Bone Season (2013) by Samantha Shannon. The theoretical part aims to explain the term dystopia, to define dystopia as a genre, and to describe its history. This part also deals with the influences on the development of dystopia, focused especially on the 20th century, and with the summaries of the books selected for the use in the practical part. The practical part focuses on the major influences on the development of dystopian literature of the 21st century written in English. Those are influences relating to methods of social control, scientific and technological advancements, and from various apocalyptic ideas and visions, such as wars and diseases. The practical part includes descriptions of the influences, their explanations, and subdivisions, following by illustrations of those influences on the selected literary works. Abstract:
This thesis provides an overview of Czech translations of Nigerian literature written in English and their reception since 1960s. Its main focus are novels and other prose fiction, first in the context of Nigerian history, culture and postcolonial experience, factors that influence an author's creative choices, such as the choice of themes and appropriation strategies aimed at transforming English for specifically African purposes. The thesis then moves to the issue of Czech translations of Nigerian works; it considers the nature and changes in publishing policies before and after 1989 and the effect of official state ideology, censorship and market on the choice of literary texts and composition of peritexts. The thesis contains short analyses of translation strategies regarding the exotic elements in researched texts and related appropriation strategies employed by authors. The reception research is based on studying mainly literary magazines and aims to create a diachronic map of reception events consisting of periods of heightened readership interest.

(in English): In this thesis I focus on the system of social protection in Japan at the turn of the 21st century and the role of the state in this system. In the first chapter I define the terms society, social policy and welfare state. The second chapter is dedicated to the historical development of the social policy from antiquity to the end of the Second World War. In the next chapter I concern myself with the character of the social protection system in Japan at the beginning of the third millennium, the changes in the Japanese society and the financial state of the social protection system. In the last chapter I analyse the reforms that have been done since the beginning of the new century and which propose was to stabilize the system of the social protection in Japan and make it sustainable.

German text<br>Zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts markiert der zeitliche Wendepunkt gleichzeitig einen kirchlichen Krisenpunkt. Die sinkende Zahl der Gottesdienstbesucher sowie der stetige Rückgang der Kirchenmitgliedschaften verdeutlichen die fehlende Bindekraft der Kirchen in Deutschland. Dieses zurückgehende Interesse an institutioneller Religiosität steht in scharfem Kontrast zu dem zu beobachtenden Interessenanstieg an spirituellen Themen und Angeboten. In der vorliegenden Forschungsarbeit wird dieses scheinbare Paradoxon untersucht und darüber hinaus erörtert, in welcher Form die Kirchen der Nachfrage nach Sinn und Spiritualität mittels der Rückgewinnung ihrer eigenen spirituellen, mystischen Dimension begegnen können. Dabei geht es unter Berücksichtigung des voranschreitenden komplexen Prozesses weltweit enger werdender Verflech-tungen und umfassender Strukturumbrüche konkret darum, die Chancen und Herausforderungen einer Respiritualisierung der Kirchen zu beleuchten. Darüber hinaus werden Handlungsempfehlungen für eine geistliche Erneuerung der kirchlichen Praxis in Betracht gezogen.<br>The beginning of the 21st century marked not only a turning point in time but also a crisis point for churches. The decrease in church attendance and the steady decline in church membership demonstrate the lack of the churches’ bonding power in Germany. This declining interest in institutional religion stands in sharp contrast to a noticeable increasing interest in spiritual issues and offers. The research presented here examines this seeming paradox and also discusses how churches can meet the demand for meaning and spirituality by reclaiming their own spiritual, mystical dimension. In considering the increasingly complex processes of global interdependence and major structural changes, this dissertation aims to examine the opportunities and challenges of a re-spiritualization of the churches. Abstract:
(in English): The focus of this diploma thesis is disillusion in the works of the contemporary novelist Ian McEwan, particularly in his twenty-first century novels. The thesis analyses the disillusionment of the reader based on McEwan's work with traditional narratives and the reader's expectations, which is achieved through the employment of the unreliable narrator in Atonement (2001) and Sweet Tooth (2012), depiction of self-deception in Saturday (2005) and Solar (2010), and the misunderstanding on the interpersonal and intrapersonal level in On Chesil Beach (2007) and The Children Act (2014). The analysis uses the method of close reading and critical evaluation through the hermeneutic process in combination with Iser's theory about the reader, Foucault's definition of discourse and some generally accepted ideas based on psychology. The analysis reveals that Ian McEwan uses disillusion in his novels as a device through which he tries to encourage the reader to critically evaluate the reader's preconceptions about the world, the conventional narratives, and the roles the reader ascribes to him/herself and to the society around him/herself.
