Abstract:
Purpose The massive growth in the number of book titles has made publishers think about how to attract a customer’s attention to particular books. This is the reason why the book cover plays an important role as a tool of communication with the reader. The research question of this exploratory study is whether the preference given by readers to book cover colors is different across genders and age groups when they choose the book in an online bookstore by its cover. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The experiment in a bookstore and a library was done. Each respondent was asked to choose one book from our sample of 18 books and a mobile eye tracking laboratory was set up in order to find out the respondents’ basic gazing data. After conducting an experiment with bookstore and library visitors, the results showed that younger women tend to select a book by its cover (when the time for selection is not limited) statistically significantly faster than men of the same age group. The difference disappears with age. Findings The data of the experiment suggested that women from the age group 18-35 prefer books with cool color covers and the preference disappears with age; accordingly, men in the age group 56+ prefer books with warm color covers. The preference was not seen in younger age groups. The analysis of data on the number of choices for each cover and the time spent looking at each of them revealed a significant positive correlation between the women’s preferences in selecting covers and the time women spend looking at them; however, there was no such correlation in the case of men’s data. Originality/value The study has shown that the reader’s book choice is at least partly influenced by the cover color. The preference given to cool and warm colors and the speed of decision making show certain differences across genders and age groups. The result contributes to knowing how to create book covers more adopted to reader’s needs.

Abstract:
This brief article deals with the use of Indonesian words referring to colors for creating metaphorical expressions. All data presented are collected from various sources, such as Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Standard Dictionary), and added with data obtained from Oxford Advanced Leaner’s Dictionary, Indonesian proverb book, encyclopedia, terminology collection book, poetry anthology, song lyrics, and data of the author’s own creation as an Indonesian native speaker. Set aside from their literal meanings, the metaphorically used color words are collected and classified into two categories, i.e. achromatic and chromatic colors. Then, their universalities are determined by comparing them with English color metaphors. Finally the existence of specific Indonesian color metaphors are identified by correlating them with extra linguistic factors, such as environment, history, religion, politic and other socio cultural activities. A careful analysis on the data shows that there is nearly no significant difference in metaphorical uses of achromatic colors in English and Indonesian. However, despite universal nuances of chromatic color metaphors, some specific ones emerge due to various external factors, such as environment, education, history, politic, law, religion, literature, and other socio cultural facts that are specifically found and practiced in Indonesia.

The correlation between the description of 40 undergraduate women's favorite colors and their self-description was investigated. Subjects rated adjectives as these applied to their favorite colors, which were selected from the Munsell Book of Color, and then rated the same adjectives as applied to themselves. Analysis indicated that adjective ratings for self-descriptions and favorite colors were significantly correlated at .34, which, however, accounts for but a small proportion of common variance.

Abstract:
The original AO HRR color vision test has been considered by many as one of the best plate tests. It is still accepted by many governmental agencies for color vision certification. In their 1954 publication, Hardy, Rand, and Rittler stated that specially compounded inks were used for printing to avoid color changes with time. Fifty years later, it is both important and interesting to determine whether the wear and tear cause significant color changes. The chance finding of a never-used second edition offers an opportunity to evaluate the color changes. A GretagMacbeth Spectrolino spectrophotometer was used to measure the chromaticities of the never-used book, and an extensively used book. Four plates (#4, 7, 13, 16), selected randomly from the four red-green sections, were analyzed. The colored dots from each of the eight plates were plotted on a CIE chromaticity diagram. Isocolor lines were drawn to evaluate chromatic alignment. Chromaticities for plates #4 and 7 are significantly different between the two books. With regard to alignment with isocolor lines, the extensively used book is better than the never-used book for plate #4. There is significant misalignment on plate #7 for both books. Chromaticities for plates #13 and 16 are essentially identical between books, all with good alignment with isocolor lines. The overall comparison shows that the chromatic alignment characteristics of the extensively used book are not worse than the never-used book. Since colors in these plates have to be aligned with both the protan and deutan axes, any significant color changes would have disturbed this delicate requirement. The findings of many plates with good alignment, and the lack of differences on plates #13 and 16 between books, suggest that there are no significant color changes over time. Differences between books on plates #4 and 7 were likely the result of the original printing process.

Abstract:
In medieval India, colors for drawing were obtained from a variety of substances such as minerals, compounds or natural salts. Some colors were derived from natural materials such as plant biomass. For example, neem and wormwood etc. were used in large scale not only in pictures but also in writing. Similarly, because of red ink written in silver and gold, Swanakshari Shetakshari was named. Red ink was used to draw margins at the end of the prominence, in the lines, in the instruments, etc. Books written with gold and silver powder were more expendable and they had more sense of grandeur. It was also relatively difficult to write the letters of silver and gold and in reading it there was a lot of emphasis on the eyes. Most of the mineral colors have been used in the West Indian painting style. These were finely powdered and brought into color. The natural state of the dyes was impure, so it was purified by dissolving it in water. Heavy impurities used to sit at the bottom and the top water was drained and separated. This process was repeated many times and color refinement was used to dry it and used it for illustration. This action was called color washing.

This is a study of perception of negative afterimages. Surface color samples were viewed under Spectralight. Subjects fixated on 11 Munsell hues mounted on white cards and matched their afterimages with chips from the Munsell Book of Color. Samples were drawn from 125 participants in two groups, one practiced, the other unfamiliar with afterimage. No single afterimage or Munsell color chip was reported for any of the stimulus hues. However, most afterimage responses for nine stimulus colors fell within one Munsell hue family. Afterimages reported for the remaining two stimulus colors of purple-blue and yellow-red span two adjacent hue families. Results suggest new alternatives to traditional subtractive color complements. New afterimage opposites are provided.

Abstract:
Yogyakarta city library applied an open access service system, in which the library users were given access to independently find and take the books in collection shelves. Those users were also asked to return the finished books to the returning books medium in the form of trolleys. Later these books in the trolleys would be returned by the librarians scheduled for shelving duty. Observation result showed that there are a lot of unreturned books because the trolleys of the returning mediums are too full. Librarian also faced many difficulties in classifying the book stacks before returned to the collection shelves because of their messy state. According to the design study and development employing front- end process method, process (Karl & Steven, 2008), this problem could be solved by developing design concept for books returning mediums in the form of shelves contained colors and book codes information according to the standard of Yogyakarta city library. The result design prototype trial showed the increasing library users’ interest to return the finished books to the returning books medium according to the color and code information. It would greatly help the librarians in classifying the books before the re-organizing in the collection shelves. Design development of the returning books medium would also open the opportunity to optimize the temporary flow of returning books which would be easily found by the other library users before the shelving schedule. Keywords: library, open access, book shelf, librarian, library user

Abstract:
In graphic design, colours can be used to communicate a message and attract attention. In book design, colours convey the content, just like they communicate the product’s information in packaging design. The purpose of this study is to analyse how colours have been used on book covers to convey the content, within the topic of health. A quantitative content analysis was made on the book covers of the top 11 bestsellers in Sweden. The colour theory analysis is based on Shigenobu Kobayashi’s work in Colour image scale. The result found that neutral hue was the one that was most commonly used. Additionally, the analysis revealed some correlation between the book content and the colour combination on the book covers. For example, a book related to finding happiness had a colour combination that matches a casual and natural lifestyle. Although the analysis offered some insight within the subject of colour and book design, further studies are needed in order to understand the extent of how colours are being used towards communicating the content.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to test the usefulness of The Color Book in facilitating interactions between an interviewer and a child. Interviews employing The Color Book were compared with interviews in which no art materials were used. More specifically the question of whether the length of utterances, number of emotional words used and statements about self by the subjects differed between groups using the Color Book and interviews without art materials. Subjects were forty grade school age children attending public schools. Twenty had previously been classified as behaviorally disordered and the other twenty had no such classification. Half of each group was interviewed without art materials. Interviews were conducted by graduate students in Psychology with experience in interviewing techniques. A twenty minute segment of the audiotaped interview was analyzed for the subject's mean length of utterance, number of times an emotion word or phrase was used and the number of times the subject used the words "I", "Me", "My" and "Mine". Two-way analysis of variance failed to detect any significant differences in these variables due the effect of the interviewing conditions.

This research is about the 1960 decade, contextualized by a revolutionary atmosphere of the social, political, ideological and cultural standpoint. Moreover, it was remarkable to the editorial universe. In this contest, the Civilização Brasileira publisher stood out, and it has been the best period since it was founded in the late 1920s. Under the direction of Enio Silveira publisher it has become leftist stronghold of intellectuals and was the cot of innovations in book design, especially about the book covers. The analysis presented in this Master's dissertation focus on the innovations in the color's role that ocurred during this epoch. We conducted a survey about pictorial books produced in 1960 by this publisher and we've analyzed the graphic language of the book covers with emphasis on chromatic issues. After this initial analysis we selected ten covers to use in a research based in a structured questionnaire that was answered by some selected people and the results were used in the analysis of the covers. Based on studies about the color theory and issues related to the printing process from the epoch analysed and using the information obtained through the questionnaire, we've compared the results with the text content of the books analysing of how the color affects our understanding producing directions that transmit sensations that seem to be the same if we compare with the sensations caused by the book read<br>Mestrado<br>Artes<br>Mestre em Artes

Viljoen, Jeanne-Marie. "Playing with the subject : writing in The Pillow Book and in In the Penal Colony." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/27234.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the nature of writing and the sorts of presence that writing gives us access to. This understanding of writing includes not only all speaking and all writing in the narrow sense of marks on a page, but goes beyond this to include the sense in which Derrida uses the term ‘writing’ in Of Grammatology, to mean a broad and complex process of the construction of textual traces or presences necessarily brought about through the structural mechanism of difference inherent in the writing process (Derrida, 1997). This study argues that writing is a system that creates Subjects or selves as the writing happens. It suggests that writing is a remarkable site from which to explore the construction of selves, because it gives us access to (partially) identifiable presences, in the apparent absence of the writer. It goes on to demonstrate that this identity can be distinguished through written traces of difference left for the reader to decipher, by analysing different aspects of the plot and writing devices in Peter Greenaway’s film The Pillow Book and in Kafka’s short story In the Penal Colony. These two texts are considered particularly relevant to this study, in that they both explicitly deal with the contradictory nature of writing and how it relates to the Being (there or the contextualised Being of Dasein) and being (in general), the life and death, the empowerment and destruction of the Subjects that writing sets up. Both texts explore salient aspects of writing on the human body. The study uses these texts as a platform for speculation about the kind of presence that can be traced through writing, and proposes that the written Subject is multiple, contradictory and reflexive, connected and related, and that it is impermanent and has a deferred presence. Finally, this written Subject is also explored in the context of Foucault’s expositions of the self in texts such as Technologies of the self (Foucault, 1994) and ‘What is an Author?’ (Foucault, 1977) in answer to his question Who are we in the present, what is this fragile moment from which we can’t detach our identity and which will carry our identity away with itself? Abstract:
In this investigation is approached method for assessing and evaluation of colour repeatability and variation for digital electrophotography printing presses. Two of most popular midlevel electrophotography colour production presses were chosen. These presses are widely used in printing houses for the printing of book covers, posters, etc. in small circulations. The similar perception of quality of digital production to the offset printing quality (ISO 12647-2:2013 ) is required from most of the clients of printing houses, publishers, etc. One of the problems of midlevel electrophotography colour production presses are variations of colours in the printing run and variations of colours during the time – weeks, months, years. The variation degree depends on many factors like – the precision of internal calibration method and types of sensors during the printing run, quality of used materials, calibration precision made by press operator, temperature and humidity variation, etc. (Kachin, Spiridonov, 2000) Specially designed for experiment test forms have been printed on two of most widely used materials for book covers, business cards, etc. – 300 g/m2 matt-coated board and 300 g/m2 offset uncoated board. The evaluation method is based on colorimetrical and densitometrical measurements (Kachin, Spiridonov, 2004) of 100 continuous printed sheets. The experiment was repeated in different time periods -between 6 hours and 4 months, to collect data for colour variation between reprinting the same test images in the time.
