Abstract:
This paper describes an Adventure Based Counselling (ABC) program that aimed to improve sixth grade student behaviour in the classroom. In particular, this paper focuses on the ABC debriefing strategy, as summarised in the “What?” “So What?” and “Now What?” format. This debriefing process was employed with both students and ABC program facilitators. While there is extensive literature concerned with the application of the ABC debrief with the target group, an ABC debrief with the facilitators of the program is lacking in the applied literature. The strategies and sample questions employed in the ABC format, as applied to both groups, are described in detail. The procedure was highly effective for both behavioural intervention with students and for maximising learning of the ABC facilitators.

Abstract:
The Active Body Control (ABC) weight-reduction program is based on telemonitoring of physical activity and nutrition together with telecoaching by weekly counseling letters sent by post or by e-mail. The study presented here reports the results of a 1-year follow-up of 49 patients with the metabolic syndrome who had lost weight with the aid of the ABC program in the preceding year. The weight regain after the second year in patients not receiving any further care (“ABC discontinued” group;n=24) and the potential benefit of continuing with the ABC program with monthly counseling letters (“ABC continued” group;n=25) were investigated. The relative weight changes after the first year had been, respectively, −13.4% and −11.4% in the “ABC discontinued” and “ABC continued” groups, and after the second year they decreased by, respectively, 4.4 and 2.8%. However, this difference in weight regains between the two groups was not statistically significant. It is concluded that three-quarters of the weight loss after 1 year is maintained after the second year. The decision whether to continue with the ABC program after 1 year should be made individually.

Abstract:
Many modern zoos strive to create connections between guests and animals through animal visitor interaction (AVI) programs. However, there has been relatively little research into the effect of AVI programs on the welfare of program animals. Previous research has revealed three factors that may affect AVI program animal welfare: species differences, handling and transport, and the provision of choice and control. We assessed the effects of an AVI program designed with these factors in mind on the behavior of a flock (N = 16) of zoo-housed domestic chickens (Gallus gallus). Behavioral data were collected on program days and on non-program (control) days, and we considered the time leading up to the program, the program itself, and the time immediately following the program. When comparing flock behavior on program days to control days, we found no differences in behavioral indicators of welfare during the time leading up to the program and during the program. Rates of aggression, however, were significantly greater after the program had concluded compared to the same time period on matched control days, but still occurred infrequently. Additionally, we recorded the spatial location of each animal while the program occurred and found that the chickens did not spend significantly more or less time in the feeding zone as visitor participation increased, although there were individual differences within the flock. We conclude that the relatively small behavioral changes seen were not indicative of a change in welfare and consider those results in the context of the program design.

Abstract:
The public service media (PSM) remit requires the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) to provide for minorities while fostering national culture and the public sphere. Social media platforms and projects – specifically ‘social TV’ – have enabled greater participation in ABC content consumption and creation; they provide opportunities for social participation in collaborative cultural production. However it can be argued that, instead of deconstructing boundaries, social media platforms may in fact reconstruct participation barriers within PSM production processes. This article explores ABC co-creation between Twitter and the # 7DaysLater television program, a narrative-based comedy program that engaged its audience through social media to produce its weekly program. The article demonstrates why the ABC should engage with social media platforms to collaboratively produce content, with # 7DaysLater providing an innovative example, but suggests skilled cultural intermediaries with experience in community facilitation should carry out the process.

Abstract:
Welfare-to-work (WTW) programs are an essential part of societal assistance made available to families in need. In ABC County, CA, problems have been found with the implementation and success rates of their WTW program: Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). Even with funds allotted for the program, ABC County has not been able to design a WTW program that meets the TANF program work participation requirement of 50% of active TANF recipients in a WTW activity. The purpose of this study was to address this need as it related to the TANF program specifically. A qualitative, exploratory, single case study was used to explore how TANF personnel interacted with TANF recipients and how that interaction influenced recipients’ decision to participate in this WTW program. Data was collected from 12 TANF workers using semi-structured interviews, observation sessions, and document reviews. The results of this study indicated that the most relevant strategies TANF eligibility staff could use when interacting with TANF recipients were: cultural sensitivity, motivating, providing information, and empathizing. Shortcomings that were identified and that still need to be addressed and improved upon were communication skills, a general lack of encouragement, judgmental behavior, and personal insecurities. In terms of TANF staff perceptions regarding their influence on client decisions to participate in the program, there were mixed results. Seven study participants believed that they had an influence on client participation in this WTW program while the rest of the participants disagreed with this statement for various reasons. As a result of this research, potential social implications include the improvement of the TANF program overall and an increase in the participation rate of the beneficiaries within the program.

Abstract:

This thesis takes a closer look at Activiy Based Computing (ABC), at health workers and how they use computers, at what aspects of ABC they find useful for their everyday work and at what should be taken into consideration when designing the next generation ABC-system. For answering these questions, doctors and nurses were asked to participate in a workshop where the theme was: "Next generation clinical infomation systems". In all seven health workers participated in two workshops. Previous work has produced the "ABC-principles" and the "Attributes of session-aware systems". The cross-section of the two sets of principles have been derrived, and yielded the list used as the base in the evaluations: Multiple patients Multiple tasks Mobility Collaboration Handover Interruption The two workshops both started with an introduction of the differet principles, before a usability evaluation (evaluating the principles), a role play and finally a focus group (containing a card ranking). In addition some of the participants were observed in their natural environment. The results of the different methods conclude that the evaluated principles all are appreciated by the health workers, but have to be implemented in a satisfactory way. They should all be taken into consideration when designing a new computer system for use within the health sector.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior
The Agriculture Plan of Low Carbon (PLAN ABC) aims at the organization and planning of actions that have been made for the adoption of sustainable production technologies, and aim to meet the greenhouse gas emission reduction commitments greenhouse (GHG) emissions in the country. The purpose of this thesis was to quantify the number of hectares approved by the ABC Plan and correlate them with the values of financing through the ABC program in Brazil, through an analysis of correlations between the regions of Brazil, in January 2010 period to December 2014 (annual data). In a second moment was held new correlations, in which we compared the ABC Plan hectares numbers with funding values provided by Brazil and Banrisul Bank in the same southern region of the country, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAP). Thus, compared to other regions of the country for having Pearson correlation coefficients almost perfect. Still, four, Northeast, North, Southeast and South, had a significance level less than 5%, which identifies a significant correlation. Finally, based on the results and conclusions of this dissertation, it is suggested that the design and objectives of this study are carried out again with the updated data, thus adding more values to samples.

The increase in the effective use of resources and ever increasing number of contracts is evident and can be seen in all regions of Brazil. The parameters of the study’ also took into consideration the importance of Family Farming in the current context, borne out internationally with Resolution 66/222 of 28.03.2012 of the General Assembly, which has given the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) the mandate to implement the ‘International Year of Family Farming’ (AIAF) in 2014, in partnership with the governments of member countries as well as with other international and non-governmental organizations engaged in agriculture and food safety policy. At the same time, given the growing concern about environmental issues, the ‘Sector Plan for Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change for the Consolidation of a Low-Carbon Economy in Agriculture’, known as the ABC Plan, is an important part of the voluntary commitment made by Brazil in 2009 at the 15th Conference of the Parties - COP15 held in Copenhagen, to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 2020. Part of the commitment must be met by family farms, which increases its responsibility for issues that go beyond the supply of food, raw materials and power generation etc. The ABC Program, the mechanism by which Brazilian farmers can access credit to implement low-carbon technologies is already included in the actions provided for in the Brazilian Agricultural Credit Policy, but challenges remain for the ABC Program to increase the transfer of these funds, despite the increase in operations contracted by producers in recent years. The objective was to investigate he credit lines available through Pronaf with adherence to the ABC Plan and contribute to voluntary commitments by the country to reduce emission of greenhouse gases in the agricultural sector. To achieve this goal, we carried out a review of the literature and credit lines available by public and private banks related to the ABC Program and Pronaf. We also presented a case for the city of Bragança Paulista (SP), where it was found that there is potential for use of the credit line available to the ABC Program for producers with family farming in the region. Additionally, it was also found that the use of these resources can be used for restoration of permanent preservation areas or legal reserve, important in preserving the rivers; and especially in the context and in the current discussions about the restriction of water resources that supply large cities, as it has been occurring in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. We also identified through this study that there are synergies between some credit lines Pronaf and also the Northeast Constitutional Financing Fund - FNE - SUDENE with the technologies in the Plan ABC and thus possibilities of including family farms in emissions reduction efforts in the Brazilian agriculture with the creation / incorporation of new lines of credit, such as Pronaf Eco ABC and Pronaf ABC Floresta. Additionally we identified some challenges and some suggestions of improvements to increase the use and effectiveness of the ABC Program, to promote more emphatically support of technical assistance to the producers, prioritization of actions in the Plan ABC in some regions of the country and even more emphasis in the Ministério de Desenvolvimento Agrário (MDA) for the incorporation of technologies of low carbon agriculture in the family farming segment.

Abstract:
In a global context of increasing demand for agricultural resources, especially animal protein, combined with climate change and scarcity of areas for agricultural expansion, the process of sustainable intensification of livestock farming is placed as an important public policie issue. The ABC Plan, an example of this type of public policy, allocates resources through the ABC Program for the recovery of degraded pastures. The identification of degraded pastures occurs through indicators of low productivity of livestock, mainly based on low animal stocking (UA.ha-1). This premise is not always true, as there are areas with low support capacity , due to physical limitations, but that are not necessarily degraded. The use of biophysical models of forage growth is an alternative approach to this problem, which may help in the spatial identification of areas where livestock could be intensified without environmental impacts, in order to guide public policies seeking to stimulate this process . The objective of this study was to determine pasture yield efficiency and yield gap for São Paulo State , using models to identify areas with the greatest potential for livestock intensification and compare them with the geography of the ABC program application. The study was organized as follows: the first part (Chapter 2) presents a discussion about pasture areas with the greatest potential for productivity increase, based on simulations in CROPGRO Perennial Forage for the growth of Brachiaria brizantha cv Marandu in order to define the productive efficiency and the yield gaps of the pasture for São Paulo State; the second part (Chapter 3) presents the performance analysis of the ABC Program in relation to the application of this resource for degraded pasture recovery (RPD), i.e., to evaluate if the credit is being applied in regions with greater potential for productivity increase, based on the explorable yield gap values previously found. The current average efficiency of pasture production (ratio between real productivity and attainable productivity) found by simulation in São Paulo State was 46.4% and an average yield gap of 5.8 Mg.ha-1.year-1 . These results indicate that there is a significant space to increase pasture productivity in this State. Prioritization of areas with a higher yield gap for intensification may contribute to the reduction of pressure for opening new pasture areas in areas with low productive potential, areas that can be occupied for agricultural production or for environmental regulation, avoiding the expansion of deforestation. The present study sought to contribute, through statewide results, to future studies on a national scale, showing that the use of mechanistic models, such as CROPGRO Perennial Forage, can be very useful for evaluating and directing public policies aimed at rural sustainable development.

Abstract:

It is important to investigate how HIV/AIDS awareness affects adolescent sexual behavior and how the HIV/AIDS information from the schools and the ABC-program (abstinence, be faithful, condoms) affects the students HIV/AIDS awareness and sexual behavior. The methods used in this study consist of qualitative semi-structured interviews, a quantitative questionnaire and statistical analysis (mainly preformed in R). The purpose of this study is to analyze how sexual behavior can be affected by HIV/AIDS awareness. The results from the interviews and the questionnaire were very different. Especially when it comes to the (age of first intercourse), information from the interviews gave the impression of a younger age at first intercourse than the results from the questionnaire did. No evidence was found that adolescent sexual behavior is affected by HIV/AIDS awareness.

In the context of the ABC-program, the students were not found to be abstinent; due to school regulations that consent to the expulsion of sexually active students it is even possible that the students stated a higher (age of first sexual intercourse) than what is really true. One of the informants stated that some students are as young as eight years of age when they have their first sexual experience (informant 7). The majority of the male students answered that the age of first intercourse is about 15 to 16 years of age and the majority of the female students stated 17-18 years of age or older (table 3, question 8). No evidence in this study supports the hypothesis that adolescent sexual behavior is affected by access to condoms. Condom access did not lead to an increase of the occurrence of sexual relationships nor did it seem to cause a lower age of first intercourse. This was the results that derived form four generalized models that were preformed in the statistics program R (table 4). There seemed to be a notion from some of the informants that the most adolescents are sexually active and the schools reluctance against promoting condoms may lead to the spread of STI’s amongst the students and to unwanted teenage pregnancies. Condoms should be provided for free to all students in secondary schools.

Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter we review the development of hospital infection prevention and control (IPC) since the nineteenth century and its increasingly important role in reducing the spread of antibiotic resistance (ABR). Excessive rates of hospital-acquired infection (HAI) fell dramatically, towards the end of the nineteenth century, because of improved hygiene and surgical antisepsis, but treatment remained rudimentary until effective antibiotics became widely available in the mid-twentieth century. While antibiotics had profound clinical benefits, their widespread appropriate and inappropriate use in humans and animals inevitably led to the emergence of antibiotic resistance (ABR). Within 50 years, this could no longer be offset by a reliable supply of new drugs, which slowed to a trickle in the 1980s. In hospitals, particularly, high rates of (often unnecessary) antibiotic use and ABR are exacerbated by person-to-person transmission of multi-drug resistant organisms (MDRO), which have, so far, largely resisted the introduction of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs and repeated campaigns to improve infection prevention and control (IPC). Despite clear evidence of efficacy in research settings, both AMS and IPC programs are often ineffective, in practice, because of, inter alia, insufficient resourcing, poor implementation, lack of ongoing evaluation and failure to consult frontline staff. In this chapter we review reasons for the relatively low priority given to preventive programs despite the ethical obligation of healthcare organisations to protect current and future patients from preventable harm. The imminent threat of untreatable infections may provide an impetus for a shared organisational and professional commitment to promoting the cultural and behavioural changes needed to successfully reduce the burdens of ABR and drug-resistant HAIs.

Abstract:
With the continual demand for effective manufacturing performance, proper maintenance of production facilities and systems has become the standard of good manufacturing practice. In response, industrial plants, machines, and equipment are becoming more technically advanced, thus more complex and difficult to control and maintained. This paper is focused on a methodology for assigning relative criticality to production equipment in order to optimise a preventative maintenance program. As a case study, the authors examine equipment used in plastic production plants. Generic factors deciding the criticality were considered using a scoring system. With the use of cumulative percentage of scores, an Always Better Control (ABC) analysis was carried out and the critical equipment identified. An effective maintenance programme for the case study shows a 23%reduction of down time and also a 12.7% of equipment durability and about 96% criticality equipment factor, with optimum output. The result of this study will be significant to manufacturing company in minimizing incidences and stoppages not only on critical equipment but production facilities.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the evaluation of project proposals within the innovation management of manufacturing industries. The goal is to define a strategy-oriented project program within a budgetary framework. This task requires a systematic approach which structures the wide range of information and makes the complexity of decision making controllable. Within the process framework of decision preparation and decision making, a coherent combination of adequate methods, processes and tools is indispensable. For this reason, a set of standardized methods comprised of ABC-analysis, value analysis, portfolio analysis, paired comparison and expert discussion is suggested. Moreover, the central decision-making supporting element is the evaluation of alternative projects with regard to their potential and risk.

Abstract:
The gas turbine engine has many advantages such as low investment costs, low emissions and a low water consumption. This fact allows its application in many power engineering systems, for example as parts of gas and oil transport systems. It is possible to increase the efficiency of gas turbines through the use of combined cycles. For this purpose, the steam cycle is used most frequently. These systems are highly efficient in terms of energy, but they are very complex and have a high water consumption. An alternative to steam cycles are gas-air systems, referred to as the ABC’s (Air Bottoming Cycles), which use hot combustion gases as a heat source for the air cycle. ABC’s are composed of a gas turbine powered by natural gas, an air compressor and an air turbine coupled to the system by means of a heat exchanger, referred to as the AHX (Air Heat Exchanger). The paper presents an application of gas-air systems with example configurations, together with thermodynamic characteristics. Two technological structures are taken into consideration — a simple system of the ABC and an ABC with air intercooling. A parametric analysis of these systems is performed using a special computer program with real gas properties for enthalpy and entropy calculations. A basic comparative analysis of gas turbine air bottoming cycle and combined gas-steam cycle has been also done. Other important calculations are related to the heat exchanger, which is one of the most important components in this system because it couples the gas and air parts. The efficiency of the whole cycle depends on a rationally designed heat exchanger. The calculations are performed for a shell-and-tube exchanger, as well as for a plate heat exchanger. For all investigations an purchase cost of machines and devices is also determined.
