Major airlines aim to generate schedules that maximize profit potential and satisfy constraints involving flight schedule design, fleet assignment, aircraft maintenance routing and crew scheduling. Almost all aircraft and crew schedule optimization models assume that flights, aircraft, crews, and passengers operate as planned. Thus, airlines typically construct plans that maximize revenue or minimize cost based on the assumption that every flight departs and arrives as planned. Because flight delays and cancellations result from numerous causes, including severe weather conditions, unexpected aircraft and crew failures, and congestion at the airport and in the airspace, this deterministic, optimistic scenario rarely, if ever, occurs. In fact, schedule plans are frequently disrupted and airlines often incur significant costs in addition to those originally planned. To address this issue, an approach is to design schedules that are robust to schedule disruptions and attempt to minimize realized, and not planned, costs. In this research, we review recovery approaches and robustness criteria in the context of airline schedule planning. We suggest new approaches for designing fleet assignments that facilitate recovery operations, and we present models to generate plans that allow for more robust crew operations, based on the idea of critical crew connections. We also examine the impact on robustness of new scheduling practices to debank hub airports.

Abstract:
Over the past few years, much attention has been given to the concept of Business Process Reengineering (BPR) and its implementation by various companies as a key strategy to regain or improve their competitive edge in the marketplace. BPR is a new business concept for organizational review that involves a fundamental rethinking and systematic redesign of core business processes supported by advance information technology to achieve sustainable step improvements in measures of performance . The aim of this research was to develop a BPR methodology for a commercial airline that could be used for the various levels and types of operation within the airline business today. The increasing complexity and variety of operations and processes within the airline industry and at the same time the increased interest in BPR as a way to change and improvement to meet current and future challenges are all facts that emphasis the need to tailor a generic BPR methodology to suit the particular requirements of a commercial airline. To achieve the research aim, an extensive review of literature was undertaken to understand the basics and roots of the BPR concept and to establish the need for a BPR methodology for airline companies. The research method also involved a review of current BPR practice and comparison of some famous BPR methodologies. This review and comparison had contributed to develop the basis for the proposed BPR methodology. A comprehensive review and comparative analysis of both American Airlines and Saudi Airlines BPR methodologies was undertaken to stress on their strengths and to overcome their shortcomings which used later to form the basis for the proposed BPR methodology for a commercial airline. In addition to the findings of each stage of this research, another factor was contributed to the development of the proposed methodology is the extensive experience gained by the author in managing and implementing the BPR projects in Saudi Airlines. The proposed BPR methodology represents a business process management model that ensures for the airline the achievement of process awareness, process ownership and process alignment with the airline vision and strategies. It helps to focus the airline effort on core business processes that add value to the end customer of the airline and maintain the required incremental improvement during the continuous improvement phase which is well defined and linked to the entire BPR effort . In addition, the proposed methodology was developed within the airline industry. This involves the application of the roots of this methodology in both American Airlines and Saudia in major BPR projects. Therefore, the proposed BPR methodology has the characteristic of being evolved and tested within airline industry which increase the probability of successful implementation of this methodology for any commercial airline. Indeed, this research has contributed a lot to the development and success of the BPR program within Saudi Arabian Airlines and produced many tangible benefits. Recommendations for further work with respect to some key tools and techniques that needed to support and facilitate the implementation of the proposed BPR methodology are provided.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: For more than a decade there has been an economic need to mitigate the negative effects of the air transport industry's innate sensitivity to cyclical developments as well as the effects of its inherent lack of substantial profits. The past 20 years were additionally marked by a change in policy that prompted various countries to liberalise and privatise their civil passenger air transportation industry. At the same time, airlines' business ambitions became more global, tapping into markets beyond countries' or continents' main gateways. All three aspects started to change the pattern of airline competition and required new business models. Key features of airlines' novel business models are geographic expansion and thus market development. Global expansion strategies and market development activities in passenger air transportation are, however, not easily and fluidly executable. The airline industry is, to some extent, still nationally regulated, thus impeding passenger airlines from fully participating in the global market-scene and from freely entering promising geographies. Concomitantly, the competitive landscape in which scheduled passenger airlines operate changed drastically, with travel value chains occasionally undergoing revolutionary transformations on both the supply and the demand side. Finally, the air transport service reveals several peculiarities that impact its production, distribution and consummation. These characteristics have inspired the execution of novel forms of competitive strategies that are described and critically discussed in this dissertation. Within this context, a main root cause for passenger airline partnerships appears to be its continued regulation and the circumvention thereof through the horizontal joining of forces, thus emulating concentration tendencies that have long been a fixture in other globalising industries. Consequently, horizontal interairline partnerships were induced and identified as a key competitive device with which to weather the challenges of the new air transport rivalry structures, the increasingly deregulated environment, and the impediments of sustained market regulation. All major airlines are now involved in some type of horizontal collaboration. The spectrum of these linkages is wide and ranges from loose, unattached, operative agreements to long-term, far-reaching, strategic ones, the most salient forms and instruments of which are thoroughly scrutinised in this dissertation. This dissertation additionally presents the general core inducing economic drivers of carrier interrelationship, which are cost reduction, revenue generation and corporate power considerations. While these aspects offer a multitude of possible partnership forms and instruments, the bulk of airline linkages, however, is presently constituted of joint revenue generation and, consequently, jointly pursued marketing and market expansion goals. In view of these causes, the present dissertation engages in a profound discussion of the rationales behind interairline partnerships, their likely evolution and effects on management practice. Essentially, the key importance of airline partnerships in meeting basic economic imperatives on the one hand, while circumventing persistent regulation on the other, questions the sustainability of incumbent carriers' current business models. There are clear indications that a structured sequence of events in establishing interairline linkages is a key success factor for horizontal airline partnerships. However, the empirical examination of contemporary partnerships' governance structures and managerial practice strongly points to a lack of ample tools with which to establish airline partnerships, select the appropriate match between alliance goals and intensity, and govern alliances during their entire life-cycles. This drawback seems particularly unacceptable in view of the urgent requirement for more appropriate managerial practice in today's discontinuous air transport business environment, and speaks loudly of the need for a framework with which to enhance airline partnership output. Most ideally, a coherent, structured sequence of events should be followed in partnership formation, organisational set-up and management in order to bring an alliance to fruition. On this basis, the establishment of a collaboration governance organisation, adequately mirroring the specific partnership type and meeting the specific demands of all partners involved, is equally identified and described as a fundamental success driver in this dissertation. Further structural, organisational and functional issues thereafter need to be considered in order to transform the joint business venture of two horizontally allied carriers into a venture for mutual success. The most essential of these are introduced in this dissertation. Synergy plays a central role in this context. Synergy, as the overreaching intention and result of working together towards a common goal, must be anchored as a prime objective of all forms of partnership activities. Synergy through interfirm linkages can be derived from various collaborative areas and is greatly influenced by both internal and external factors. One gauge for synergy, in particular for the transformation of synergy potentials into synergy effects, is partnership intensity. The measurement of partnership intensity can be used to perpetually monitor the benefits of partnership activities. At the same time, inconsistent or uneven partnership intensity can indicate the existence of dissynergies or frailties in the alliance. The underlying theories of collaborative synergy generation, its main drivers and impediments, with particular reference to horizontal partnerships of scheduled passenger airlines, are explored in this dissertation. In recognition of the theoretical and practical background of airline partnerships and the acknowledged problems associated with their establishment and operation, the present dissertation proposes a novel model dynamically supporting the quest for synergy in airline interrelationships. Incorporating the goals of synergy generation and its continual measurement in interairline partnerships, the synergy audit is designed as a dynamic managerial tool. The synergy audit functions as a recurring device for unleashing all the positive partnership benefits of collaborative scope and width. It aids airline alliance management in transforming the desired benefits of partnership activities - synergy potentials - into real, tangible synergy effects during the entire partnership life cycle. The tool A.PIE (Airline Partnership Intensity Evaluator) supports the synergy audit and, which idiosyncratic to the airline industry, multidimensionally applies the deduced relationship of partnership intensity and synergy to the most salient partnership areas and functions. The present dissertation shapes understanding of the true drivers and complexities of today's airline partnerships. It proposes a circular, multidimensional and dynamic model, thus attempting to enhance the set-up, performance and output of horizontal airline collaboration. From this point of view it endeavours to fill the gap identified in contemporary airline partnership management and practice.

Since the late 1990s, network airlines worldwide have being enrolling in one of the three current Global Airline Alliances (GALs), oneworld, Star Alliance and SkyTeam. By 2011, airlines belonging to the three GALs transported over two-thirds of all international traffic. This thesis studies the reasons that cause an increasing number of airlines to join this collaborative scheme as a way to develop a wider network and to increase profitability by serving international connecting traffic. The evolution of GALs is characterized here by the analysis of the size of these alliances, as well as by the volume of partnerships and code share agreements between alliance partners during the period 2006-2011. The results of this study illustrate the differences between each of the GALs and the degree of dependence of airlines on alliances to develop their international networks. By most indicators, the largest alliance, Star Alliance, is the GAL in which member airlines rely more on their alliance partners when developing code share agreements with foreign airlines. In all three GALs, code share agreements between alliance partners are much less likely to be broken than with nonpartner airlines. Airlines operating in the transatlantic markets appear to be the most advanced firms in the marketing of code shared itineraries. The empirical analysis is complemented with a review of the theoretical benefits of GALs to airlines, alternative network models for international growth, the impact of alliances on customers' welfare, their potential anti-competitive effects on independent carriers, and the current regulatory framework affecting alliances on both sides of the North Atlantic. Overall, this work provides a holistic view of the GALs as a model for network development, to describe their policy implications, and to suggest key drivers in the future of airlines' network development strategies.

Abstract:
Air transport is by its very nature one of the most international of economic activities. However, until fairly recently, its regulatory framework has been premised on an overriding nationalism developed and maintained on the basis of the following: substantial ownership and effective control provisions found in national legislation and most bilateral air transport agreements; restrictions on cabotage found in national legislation, most bilateral air transport agreements and Article 7 of the Chicago Convention; and the related national restrictions on the right of establishment applicable to national carriers.
However, as the international component of the air transport industry has grown in importance, the tenets underlying this restrictive regulatory system are increasingly coming into question. This thesis examines the development of international airline co-operation and integration, namely by way of mergers, franchises and alliances, in the face of the existing regulatory obstacles. It examines the legal impediments to, the form of, and the costs and benefits of each of these integrative methods and their various derivatives. Finally, it traces the regulatory responses to these integrative activities, and explores the possibility and methodology of creating a truly global airline, both in form and in function.

Chiu-Hua, Chang. "Airline Development Strategies and Feasibility Study on Establishing a Low Cost Carrier in Taiwan." Thesis, City University London, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.511777.

Abstract:
While Low Cost Carriers (LCCs) are prevalent and mature in Europe and North America, the business model of LCCs has only recently started to take hold in Asia, and in recent years, more and more airlines would like to operate the LCC model on Asian region routes. The research examines whether or not LCCs are suitable for operation in Taiwan, as well as developing airline strategies in respond to some recent changes in airline market and political conditions in the country. Firstly, the research illustrates not only the current regulation and marketing situations between Taiwan and other Asian countries, but also reviews the historical data of passenger numbers and load factors of the main airlines since the year 2000. Secondly, the research surveys the views of three different interviewees, CAA Taiwan, airline executives, and passengers to analyse what they expect from an LCC. Thirdly, in order to maximise an LCC's efficiency, the research establishes a yield management system for LCCs and uses it for modifying the operation and precisely calculating operating cost. In addition, it also studies the successful and failed cases in Europe and the U. S. to understand the key points to success in a competitive market. Although the current environment in Taiwan may not be ideally suitable for LCC development, Taiwanese airlines are still able to learn how to reduce costs and improve their sales model from the experience of the LCC revolution. Moreover, the air link between Taiwan and China is likely to be a significant potential market in the future

Larsen, Tulinda Deegan. "A Behavioral Framework for Managing Massive Airline Flight Disruptions through Crisis Management, Organization Development, and Organization Learning." Thesis, University of Maryland University College, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3588457.

Abstract:

In this study the researcher provides a behavioral framework for managing massive airline flight disruptions (MAFD) in the United States. Under conditions of MAFD, multiple flights are disrupted throughout the airline's route network, customer service is negatively affected, additional costs are created for airlines, and governments intervene. This study is different from other studies relating to MAFD that have focused on the operational, technical, economic, financial, and customer service impacts. The researcher argues that airlines could improve the management of events that led to MAFD by applying the principles of crisis management where the entire organization is mobilized, rather than one department, adapting organization development (OD) interventions to implement change and organization learning (OL) processes to create culture of innovation, resulting in sustainable improvement in customer service, cost reductions, and mitigation of government intervention. At the intersection of crisis management, OD, and OL, the researcher has developed a new conceptual framework that enhances the resiliency of individuals and organizations in responding to unexpected-yet-recurring crises (e.g., MAFD) that impact operations. The researcher has adapted and augmented Lalonde's framework for managing crises through OD interventions by including OL processes. The OD interventions, coupled with OL, provide a framework for airline leaders to manage more effectively events that result in MAFD with the goal of improving passenger satisfaction, reducing costs, and preventing further government intervention. Further research is warranted to apply this conceptual framework to unexpected-yet-recurring crises that affect operations in other industries.

Full text
Abstract:
The systemic origins of many accidents have led to heightened interest in the way in which organisations identify and manage risks within the airline industry. The activities which are thought to represent the term "organisational accident", "safety culture" and "proactive approach" are documented and seek to explain the fact that airlines differ in their willingness and ability to conduct safety management. However, an important but yet relatively undefined task in the airline industry is to conceptualise the safety mechanism in proactive safety, and its influential factors. What is required is a model of a proactive safety mechanism which builds upon existing knowledge of what is thought to contribute to safety by adding an increased knowledge of the organisational factors. These factors not only serve to influence the safety mechanism, but also serve to be the predictors of the performance of safety management system. This thesis aims to fill that gap. It firstly conducts an overview of the current airline safety management system literature and identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the current system. Given the need to explore the important but undefined field, a proactive safety mechanism model is then developed and tested to identify the organisational factors which exert an influence upon the safety mechanism. Four hypotheses were set out to be tested in an attempt to justify the multi-dimensional and complex nature of the safety mechanism model. The model is then tested by applying it to a past accident (case study) and a survey of opinions with questionnaire. The results of this research work show that the safety mechanism model is a model of the evolution of safety management system in the context of proactive safety management. Further study can apply the proposed model to the re-organisation of an airline safety management system and evaluate the impact upon the company's system. It leads to the suggestion that an airline's safety health and performance needs the co-ordination of both retroactive and proactive safety management, and concludes that the ultimate contribution of this research is to provide airlines with reliable data, applicable references and a practicable methodology to enable their safety management system to evolve at a fundamentally "genetic" level.

Karim, Javid. "Development of a process driven approach to improving supply chain performance within the airline service industry : executive summary." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2002. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/1298/.

Full text
Abstract:
This programme of research investigated the development of a process driven approach to improving supply chain performance within the airline service sector. Work was undertaken within the Engineering division of an established UK scheduled airline, and specifically within the maintenance, repair and overhaul sector (MRO). The underlying objective of this research was to establish the relevance of supply chain management as a source of competitive advantage to the airline service sector. A detailed review of the literature revealed that best practice originated predominately from the Japanese automotive sector, notably a manufacturing based industry. A review of the characteristic differences between these two industry sectors was undertaken to identify the opportunity for cross-sectoral transfer of knowledge. This was complemented by a thorough benchmarking analysis that identified the airline industry's position relative to best practice. This confirmed the relative immaturity of supply chain management within the airline service sector, which was representative of progress achieved by the automotive sector in the early 1980's. The key aspects of best practice were then structured into a proposed process for improving supply chain performance. This process consisted of specific strategies with their corresponding tools and techniques for implementation. A number of case study implementations were then used to further validate, test and develop this generic process within a real airline operational environment. Significant improvements in both operational and financial performance were achieved through adopting this approach. A 40 % reduction in chemical sourcing costs was achieved, representing a £990,000 saving over three years for the case study company. A further 12.5 % reduction in landing gear overhaul costs was achieved (approximately £300,000), whilst at the same time improving the operational performance of this supply chain by 60 %. This research concludes by recommending a generic process for improving supply chain performance. The benefits achieved through implementing this process further confirm the relevance of supply chain management to the airline service sector. Finally, this paper proposes a deterministic tool to assist practitioners in the selection of the most appropriate supply chain strategy for a given situation. Whilst this tool requires further validation, the possibilities for it's application extend far beyond those of the airline service sector. As a result this work has significantly contributed to knowledge in the field, representing considerable innovation.

Abstract:

When a country is going through bigger social changes, the companies within that country tend to get affected by the changes. Hungary was part of the eastern bloc during the communist era and underwent major social normative changes over time. This study is based on Malév Hungarian Airlines, a company that was established under strict communist control and underwent major changes during its fifty first years.

This dissertation will describe how the accountancy within a company is affected by the historical development of the country it is located in.

The purpose is to provide the reader with basic understanding on what has been influencing Hungary’s accountancy within companies, in context to the historical development of the country.

The study is based on a literature review and tested in an empirical study with a qualitative approach. The literature review is based on two theories, namely the Agency Theory and the Institutional Theory. The theories and the empirical framework are strengthened by scientific articles and books.

The findings indicate that both social normative factors and ownership changes within a company, are two major factors that influence a company’s shaping of their accountancy. Further that a regulated, coercive society tends to have an inhibitory effect on a company’s accountancy.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to explore policy implications, production and consumption processes between the airline and tourism industries. In particular, policy initiatives, product developments, innovation and consumption patterns are taken into consideration in order to identify the relationship between the two industries within the context of Cyprus. The airline industry, after the implementation of liberalization, has changed considerably in terms of market size, type of airlines and operations. In the case of destination management, innovation and policy planning are key parameters of success. Additionally, new business production methods are imperative, given the emergence of a ‘new-tourist’ who is educated, seeking shorter breaks and more frequent and cheaper trips in unique and unexplored destinations. Both quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis are employed. In particular, 26 interviews of ‘power-elite’ policymakers and stakeholders in Cyprus are used to explore policy implications for the identification of implementation outcomes and their impact on product developments and innovation. Furthermore, 300 self-administered questionnaires were distributed to British travellers to Cyprus, so as to identify the role of the airlines and the extent of the importance attributed to destination. The results of the study suggest a gap in the relation of the tourism and airline industries’ interaction at policy level, outcome, and implementation. More specifically, the airline policy enables the industry to become more adaptive and creative, and innovation is depicted via low-cost carriers (LCCs). The tourism industry has developed a policy that reflects the post/neo-Fordism trends of consumption and production, which refers to niche products. However, there is a dearth of policy theory and implementation, with consistent failures and delays. Thus, tourism is at the stage of renovation without essential innovation in contrast to the airline industry, which is a leader, and a proponent of innovation. In terms of consumption, Factor Analysis suggests that British tourists tend to book their holiday trips based on three categories of airline attributes: ‘Customer service’, ‘Price-sensitive & Internet’ and ‘Selection in travel behaviour’. Cluster analysis suggests three main categories of tourists, namely, ‘Traditional’, ‘Demanding/Opportunists’ and ‘Ambivalent’. The results confirm that consumers have changed and tourism destinations must be able to adapt to their demands and to offer a variety of services and products in order to survive in a competitive global market. In the case of the airline industry and holiday trips, convenience and the airport that the airline is flying from is more important than the cost of the ticket.

Over the past three years, the aviation industry has been negatively affected by the reduction of the defense sub-industry in the United States. But some growth is expected, associated with an increase in defense budgets in the U.S., Britain, France, Japan, a number of countries in the Middle East and other countries; relatively stable growth in global GDP; lower prices for oil and other raw materials; and continued growth in demand for passenger transportation. So, it is expected that the military aircraft industry will emerge from the crisis, and the commercial will continue its decade-long trend of above-average growth (in 2015 the volume of aircraft production was twice as high as in 2005). The number of people in the world using air transport is increasing, because the prosperity is growing and visa processes are becoming easier. Revenues for individual countries, regions and companies are growing as a consequence. Thus, according to Airports Council International (ACI) estimations, European aviation industry earns 4.1% of the GDP and provides about 12,300,000 workplaces.

Feldman, Marcos. "Subsidizing Entertainment Projects As A Strategy For Urban Economic Development: A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Miami’s American Airlines Arena." FIU Digital Commons, 2005. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/716.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis evaluates the practice of subsidizing entertainment projects as economic development strategy through a case study of the American Airlines Arena (AAA). Subsidy proponents argued that it would generate new tax revenue and jobs, and enhance the city’s image and pride. This rationale neglects factors that mitigate the economic impact of arenas and fails to consider the social costs. The AAA subsidy is evaluated using a cost-benefit method that has been underutilized in academic research. The economic impact is analyzed by estimating the fiscal return on the public’s investment and the number and quality of new jobs created. The social costs are considered in light of Miami’s economic development history and the policy implications are discussed. The AAA subsidy results in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses over the term of the public-private partnership and created a negligible number of low quality jobs. Furthermore, the AAA subsidy may have exacerbated relations between residents and leaders by prioritizing the leisure spending of visitors over the needs of inner city residents.

Abstract:

Background: The airline industry of today functions in a very intense and competitive market and is also very sensitive to change. Over the last years the airline industry has changed and been affected drastically. Factors like sudden shocks, such as the terrorist attacks of September 11th in 2001 and the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) phenomenon in China 2003, change in macroeconomic factors, such as GDP growth in different regions, changes in the oil price and fluctuations in exchange rates, and also by the fact that the airline industry have experienced a general change in structure and trends. A consequence of these shocks and general industry changes, also made worse by the ongoing financial crisis and escalation of fuel price many airlines have lost a significant part of their market value. The fact that during a normal year around eight airlines in the world go bankrupted but that Sterling became the 31st in 2008 strengthens this statement.

Problem: All these incidents the airline industry has been exposed to, combined with the overall industry change in structure and trends, have given the European airline industry the shape that it has today, and the change is not over. This emphasizes the importance and interest to map out the airline industry of today with the most recent and major events in consideration and also the curiosity for the fact that differences in how the different airlines have been affected should exist.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how industry change has affected the profitability and capital structure of European airlines, individually and in comparison with each other.

Method: Six actors in the airline industry were selected for a descriptive type of study that takes a deductive approach. Secondary numerical data from the airlines’ annual reports was used and analyzed and conclusions were drawn based on existing theories. Quantitative calculations for different financial ratios were made. To get analysts’ viewpoints and more depth and detailed description of the topic, a qualitative approach was used in the form of interviews. For a more structured analysis and to easier evaluate the development of the financial situation of the airlines an observational scheme was developed.

Conclusions: For the three financial aspects studied, significant patterns were observed that could be explained by the shocks and trends that have changed the European airline industry. The strongest empirical findings indicating affects of this kind was for the levels of profitability, both for traditional airlines and Low Cost Carriers. The shocks of September 11th and SARS, with their respective consequences and aftermaths, were reflected in the findings and also the effects of the general industry trend of an increase in competition.

Abstract:
This thesis examines key perspectives in relation to multilateral airline alliances. These perspectives are the economics theory perspective, the external evidence perspective and the practitioner perspective. The way in which multilateral relationships develop is explored in the context of the airline operating environment and globalization. The research is also concerned with the value that alliances create. The study examines the relevance of the concept of the firm as a stand-alone entity as airlines become increasingly global. The principal qualitative research method employed was that of the individual, in-depth, face to face interview. Respondents included Senior Executives from member airlines from each of the three multilateral alliance networks. Case studies are provided of these multilateral alliances. Airline Business alliance survey data and company reports for each of the lead European carriers in the alliance groupings were also analysed for this study. The literature review takes a cross-disciplinary and multi-concept approach, covering economics, marketing, strategy and international business. The research found that the airline operating environment is unique and that numerous aspects of this have influenced the creation and development of airline alliance networks. As these networks developed other factors also became important. It is concluded that the 'firm' has continuing significance in the industry particularly because nationality (which is associated with airlines) is crucial to market access in some parts of the world. The boundaries to the firm within the current operating environment were clearly demonstrated for carriers with global ambitions. It is also concluded that the three multilateral airline alliances differ in orientation. The industry is still undergoing change and the alliance groupings are helping to influence that change. The multilateral alliances are still matters of temporary associations. Future direction will depend greatly on the speed and extent of regulatory change.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this PhD research project was to critically examine the self-reported socially-responsible activities of European full-service and low-fares airlines. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a concept that has been described using many terms and with varying definitions. Broadly, it is the recognition that businesses should voluntarily mitigate and manage their externalities. CSR has been touted by businesses and governments alike as a preferred alternative to regulation. This research looked at the self-reported CSR approaches of the European airline sector, which has historically been heavily regulated and is currently facing increasing pressures regarding its impacts on CSR- and sustainability-related concerns. Low cost carriers have been under particular scrutiny for their impacts, and therefore, this research compared the CSR approaches of the two dominant airline business models in Europe: low cost and full service models. The sample consisted of 21 full service and 13 low cost carriers with headquarters in Europe. Mixed qualitative methods were applied to 566 secondary documents (websites, press releases, annual reports, and standalone CSR reports) and 15 elite interviews with airline managers. A range of established CSR indicators were assessed, including: definitions, reported practices, motivations and justifications for CSR activities, and CSR management and monitoring. Much of what the airlines reported as their CSR was at odds with academic and governmental definitions; as a whole, they placed considerable emphasis on environmental issues and adhering to regulations. This study also found that the CSR practices were closely correlated with business practices and key sector issues – an understanding of CSR that is most compatible with stakeholder theory-based conceptualisations. Business models on their own were found to be an overly-simplistic explanation for the wide variances of practice that were found in the sample. Instead, four ‘profiles of responsibility’ were identified, which better captured the differences in practices.

Abstract:
D-Day is an event that has seated itself in collective memory, particularly America, as a seminal moment of the Second World War, and of the 20th century. Often the Allied landings in Upper Normandy are conceptualized as a watershed moment of the Second World War, signaling the eventual, unavoidable defeat of Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. Yet, the reality of the situation was far more complicated, as the success of OVERLORD was followed by months of grueling fighting in the Norman bocage. Weeks after the successful landings, the war began to resemble the slow, attritional warfare that had defined the First World War. While the Allies possessed a monumental advantage both in terms of manpower and material, the Germans managed to contain them to a small geographic area, preventing the Allies from bring this advantage to bear. As such, D-Day—though certainly the most well-known aspect of the Normandy campaign—was not the only vitally important operation. In fact, Operation COBRA, the Allied breakout operation, proved to be an inflection point of operations in Normandy. Though it is largely overshadowed by OVERLORD, COBRA proved to be one of the most important military operations in western Europe, allowing the Allies to exploit their massive advantages in material and manpower through a war of maneuver. Operation COBRA is the focus of this analysis, but not in a traditional sense. While COBRA has been largely marginalized, receiving scant attention in general histories of the Second World War, a small but comprehensive historiography on the subject does exists. This body of historical work constitutes a discourse, detailing a changing understanding of COBRA within the Second World War. The focus of this analysis seeks to shift the current paradigm about Operation COBRA, analyzing its legacy in military thought following the Second World War—namely COBRA’s legacy and role in the development of the U.S. Army’s Cold War-era AirLand Battle doctrine. The primary objective of this study is to develop a link between Operation COBRA’s legacy and the development of AirLand Battle doctrine, demonstrating its place in modern military thought. The analysis is developed through four major components. The first section provides a brief overview of Operation COBRA, itself, and seeks to impart readers with a sense of why COBRA was, at the time, mostly unprecedented. The second section, a historiography of COBRA, provides insight to historians’ changing understanding and framing of Operation COBRA. The third section provides a broad overview of AirLand Battle doctrine while also analogizing Operation COBRA and the U.S. Army’s Cold War doctrine. In this way the third section proposes a link between COBRA and AirLand Battle doctrine. Finally, the fourth section attempts to solidify this link by analyzing several decades of papers written at the Army Command and General Staff College, demonstrating a reoccurring discourse that continually linked COBRA to AirLand Battle doctrine. Ultimately, this analysis seeks to bridge the discursive space that exists between historical and modern military thought, as both are necessary for the formation of innovative military doctrine.

Airlines are on the forefront to deal with the aviation safety which is crucial for success. The core of the aviation safety management is to prevent the occurrence of accidents. However, air transportation is a complex system involving closely related factors such as humans, machines, facilities, organizations and environments, and it is hard to discover the causes to prevent accidents from the system. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a system safety analysis model to assist the safety managers dissecting and analyzing the system, exploring the hazard factors and discovering the critical problems with a systemically approach. For this reason, this study begins with clarifying the characteristics of aviation safety system through different viewpoints— accident causes, system components, accident formations and system operations; and then, exploring the concepts and essences of safety management. Thus, a comprehensive and hierarchical framework of airline safety system could be constructed. In order to clearly represent the framework and effectively discover the root cause of the system, the methodology of Structural Equation Model (SEM) is adopted, and the processes of model construction, safety analysis and problem improvement are brought up. According to the proposed model construction process, the study follows with specifying the frameworks of measurement model and structure model of the system. The effecting factors of each system level are explored one by one, and their corresponding indicators and measurements are drawn up respectively. The relationship between levels and activities of the system are identified, and all the system components can be methodically connected. In the final, basis on the constructed model frameworks and given linear parameters, a numerical case is further illustrated by applying the proposed processes of safety analysis and problem improvement. The demonstration reveals that the proposed system safety analysis model works well and can be a useful tool for airlines to diagnose the quality and health of their safety systems.

There are so many foundations that form a company. The main foundations are finance, marketing, and human resource management (HRM). Only with the synergy of the foundations, a company can gain success in return. However, what is the connection between them? HRM has ability in building company behaviors and practices which form a primary part of corporate culture, it also becomes the most important thing which ensures corporate achievement. Training and development is one of HRM tools. It is being used to maintain talents. It helps HRM to improve the abilities and moreover implant new skills or values to the organization. Service industry is an industry which requires high quality of talents. Airlines, one of service industry, which are really dependable to quality of services is forced to give the priority to training and development. How to be the different with the other competitors, giving the valuable services although with budgeted expenses, become the main goals of low cost carrier airlines. When customers are satisfied by the given service, they will be loyal to the company, especially to an airline with low cost budget but giving full service. Moreover, the customer can give recommendation to the community. Those actions would impact company revenue and generate company performance. Employee training and development program also impact the way of company governance. Sufficient training and development of managerial staff brings another value added to the company’s harmony. The way of leadership also gives big impacts to the working environment. Company with comfortable and synergy working atmosphere will have a better company performance as the result.

One of the missions of Human Resources Department is to prepare talent for the organization. Management development not only provides a definite direction for human resources development and succession plan, but also offers reference and assistance for employee career development. The subject of this research is a local airline running international flights in Taiwan. The research focuses on "management development" and pinpoints from the point of view of "competency". I adapt questionnaires and analyze, through descriptive statistics, the essential competency for managers of different level, and make "Management Development Plan" according to the analysis. It is found in the research that management competency is different for each management level. "Supervision", "leadership", "oral communication and reconciliation", "human capital cultivation”, "interpersonal relationships", "foreign languages", and "computer application" are competency required for managers of fundamental level; "oral communication and reconciliation", "plan and organization", "leadership", "innovation", and "written communication and reconciliation" for managers of medium level; "strategic thinking", "decision making", "leadership", "innovation", and "oral communication and reconciliation" for managers of high level. The result is practical in that it provides references and application in various HR development functions of recruitment, appraisal, salary, succession plan, etc. In addition, management development plans for all levels would quickly meet the core management competency requirement and enhance enterprise competitiveness.

This paper explores the sales channel strategy of a major European passenger airline in the Portuguese market and gives implications to optimize the channel structure. Research was conducted to segment the airline’s customers according to service outputs demanded of each channel, and to further outline potential demand-side gaps and supply-side gaps within the current channel design. Results imply that offering personalized fares that are directly linked to the customers via the airlines corporate website, supports the satisfaction of their needs, reduces costs for the airline and brings with it the possibility to provide them with ancillary products.

Abstract:
Training and development (T&D) (also known as Human Resource Development – HRD) and its strategic role are currently debated at the national, organizational and individual levels. General literature regarding its impact is undecided. In the airline industry, training literature and studies have been confined to either “great carriers” such as Southwest and Singapore Airlines or to technical areas of expertise such as engineering, maintenance and navigation of aircraft. Very little work has been done at the broader levels of a typical network airline carrier, particularly its frontline branches. Therefore, the current qualitative study will focus on if and how training and development is strategic at the organizational, departmental and individual levels of an international North American airline. Here, a collective case study approach is used whereby three frontline departments from three distinct branches (Airports, Call Centers, and In-Flight) have been assessed. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted with a Training Manager, Curriculum Developer/Instructor and Frontline employee from each branch making a total of nine interviewees. This study will show if and how each department deems T&D as strategic in its own way. It also shows how the three different T&D departments have different requirements to become more strategic due to the very different nature of their work.

The effect factors to airline passenger demand, in the area of industrialized countries, was not clear in literatures; conventionally income was a sounded effect, but new indication was pointed to a derive demand from industrial activities. This study was developed with the goods theory and transport’s wisdom to examine that industrial activity was a better effect factor to airline passenger demand. The study analyzed five industrialized countries’ domestic and international flights, Japan, USA, United Kingdom, Germany and Taiwan. GDP, Purchasing Power and Industrial Production Index were examined their influences to air travel demand with time series method. The result confirms the theory in the transformation of goods nature. In industrialized counties, air travel demand is no longer Normal goods but Neutral goods. Income and purchasing power do not affect air travel demand. Instead, industrial activities have influence to air travel demand. Industrial Production Index also shows positive and negative lag effects to airline passenger demand, which indicates the needs to air travel in high production activities period for business contacts and in low production activities period for sales calls. It suggests to employ Industrial Production Index in forecasting airline pas-senger demand.

Low cost carriers have been popular for years in Europe and America. However, this trend was only developed rapidly in Southeast Asia when AirAsia was established in 2001. At then, the entire Northern Asia countries haven’t been influenced by this trend. However, after years, Northern Asia area was finally realized this low-cost airfare trend. Since 2011, Low cost carriers started to develop in Japan and Korea. In 2004, the first foreign low cost carriers -Jetstar started the route between Taoyuan and Singapore. At then, only 3 foreign low cost carriers have routes to Taiwan. Starting from 2011, more foreign low cost carriers have routes to Taiwan, until 2013, 13 low-cost airlines have routes to Taiwan. Limited by freedoms of the air and no secondary airports, Taiwan has never had its own nationality low cost carriers. However, realized the inevitability of the low cost airfare trend, the local government authorities and airline companies finally have to change the policies and their attitude about this trend. At the beginning of 2014, China Airline and TransAsia Airways announced their investments on low cost carrier operations, which is a great chronicle for Taiwan aviation history. However, many important issues still need to be discussed behind the investments including the new operation model; how to operate the nationality of aviation in order to win. This thesis will analyze those important issues and emphasize on the low cost carrier business models based on the case studies and their success and failure stories. Detailed case study analysis will be given to one specific nationality aviation company. At the end of the study, I will give suggestions to this company. This study result shows that if the nationality of the airline company can use the subsidiaries to operate the low cost carrier, having a distinct market positioning between the mother and subsidiary companies, and operate both companies independently but do not erode the effective use of both markets and resources, it will have a great chance to operate both markets successfully. After all, “nationality” and language” are its strongest strengths to the success.

The aim of this research is to understand the network development of global airline alliance in the Asia-Pacific region. This study uses Innovata flight schedule data covering year 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2015 to analyze the network development of airline alliance in the 33 selected Asia-Pacific airports. Besides, this research also uses cluster analysis and current situation analysis in order to realize the relationship between airline alliance and airports and the effect of the network development of airline alliance on the airports. The result of our analysis shows that if national carrier has great network and connectivity performance, the airport’s network and connectivity will also be benefit from that. In addition, the network of airline alliance in the Asia-Pacific region is based on the national carrier’s network. Therefore, if national carrier joins airline alliance, it will strengthen the network and connectivity of the airport. And that airport will have much greater potential to become the regional hub airport. The result also indicates that the network development of global airline alliance in the Asia-Pacific region is quite different. Furthermore, the network development of global airline alliance in the Asia-Pacific region is getting mature. New alliance members only increase few destinations. It shows that the marginal utility of network development is decreasing. However, it still offers some benefits on the network development.

This research work examines the offer of the airlines seeking to understand the needs of passengers and the opportunities that potentially arise from them. In collaboration with TAP Air Portugal, the path is to innovate in the areas of ancillary services by improving the value proposition offered to passengers and by selling more through direct channels. Passenger’s travelling journey is analyzed trying to understand passenger preferences along this process. The relationship between the passenger and the airline specifically on passenger trust, airline reliability and acceptance of new products and services are explored. Lastly, it is also analyzed the possibility of airlines in reselling the airplane tickets. Through the design and execution of an online survey, primary data was collected from the responses of 300 air passengers in order to explore passenger needs and the potential of innovative airline products and services. Therefore, through statistical analysis, it was found the reasons that make passengers not to acquire their airplane ticket directly with the airline. It was found that passengers are not satisfied with the information obtained and that they feel the need of being well advised to properly plan and make their trips. It was also found that passengers demonstrate a positive acceptance to exchange their airplane ticket, to a similar date, as long as they are refunded for doing so.

The perspective of previous academic research on the construct of convenience has been ambiguous, or has only focused on time saving, low-risk or low-involvement products or services. However, it should not be limited to only time, especially, some products and services do require the use of time, e.g. travel, extreme sports, and eating out. There should be other considerations for the convenience needs, e.g. less efforts or energy associated with acquisition, consumption and disposal. Berry, Seiders, and Grewal (2002) further propose a conceptual model which examines the basic components of service convenience, based on the consumer decision making processes. No empirical work has currently developed the service convenience construct. Therefore, this research conducted the scale development of service convenience and tested the construct against different passenger types. Three time’s samplings were conducted in this study. Respondents needed to be qualified for flying overseas in the four years. First two samplings were for scale development and analyzed by Alpha reliability analysis and factor analysis to extract the components of service convenience and then test the reliability and validity. Third time’s sampling was for hypothesis examination and analyzed by variance analysis. The research conclusions can be drawn from two angles: 1.Scale development: The reliability, factor structure, and validity tests reveal five-components service convenience (decision, transaction, access, benefit, postbenefit convenience), and 19-item scale measured the construct have sound and stable properties. The scale demonstrates that consumers have different kinds of service convenience demands. In addition, it provides the first empirical support for earlier conceptual work held that the broader concept of service convenience is important to consumers (Berry et al. 2002; Brown 1989). 2.Results of hypothesis examination: employing variance analysis, the results are as follows: (1) Elder consumers have higher perception decision convenience than younger consumers. (2) Lower level of education has higher perception of decision convenience than higher level of education. (3) Different travel purpose has significantly different perceived decision convenience, perceived transaction convenience, and postbenefit convenience. (4) Group traveler has higher perception of postbenefit convenience. Based on the research conclusions, suggestions to both academicians and practitioners, and directions for future research were submitted. This study has empirically identified five service convenience variables and the scales, which may assist researchers in building a sounder framework of service convenience. In addition, the findings may provide practitioners with insight into understanding the perceptions of service convenience among gender, age, education, income, travel purpose, or travel way, which may further help them in making marketing planning on their target markets. Finally, further research can conduct the qualitative study to look more insights into this construct to make the scale more perfect, increase the sampling sizes, and investigate in other service industries.

Abstract:
Forecasting models have been applied to many industries as a decision-making tool for over 100 years. Their application in the aviation industry benefits a wide variety of stakeholders such as airliners and airport authorities, who use past data to predict demand and passenger choices so that they can better define fares, manage their fleet and make decisions on the airport layout and future expansions, among others. The main objective of this dissertation is the development of a forecasting model capable of predicting the number of flight movements at Lisbon Airport. The model was based on an autoregressive model, which uses past data in order to forecast future figures. Weekly data regarding the flight movements at Lisbon Airport was the sample for this study, which was processed through RStudio programming software. Once the Autoregressive Moving Average (ARIMA) models were defined, the forecasting data was created and further tested for accuracy using extant data. The impact of COVID-19 had to be considered in this situation, leading to the breakdown of the original time-series into three different samples. The forecasting models were subsequently created through each of these models. The results were expressed through the three different models, and since two of them have extant data, meaning an existing sample to compare the predicted data, it was possible to determine the accuracy level. However, these models cannot be applied immediately since the impact of COVID-19 is still present and flights have not resumed normality. Once this normality resumes, the models can be applied.
