Abstract:
Allicin (diallyl-thiosulfinate) has been known for decades and is the main biologically active component in garlic with numerous applications in health. Actually there exist several methods for the determination of Allicin content in garlic by HPLC and Spectophotometry, however, the results published of the various methods don’t coincide. The objective of this study is to determine the allicin content by HPLC, espectophotometry and to evaluate the results obtained. The HPLC methods used for this study were taken from Eagling and Sterling1 and from the Institute for Nutraceutical Advancement (INA) 2. By the first method which consists of a mixture of an internal standard (PI) in the sample and HPLC assay, results a medium allicin concentration of 2.0 mgallicin/ggarlic ± 0.32. Using the INA method which consists of an external standard method of allicin, obtained by a solid phase extraction (SPE), results a medium allicin concentration of 5.02 mgalicina/galho hum ± 0.39. The spectophotometric methods used for this study were proposed by Lawson3 and Miron4. Through the first method which consists on the reaction of cysteine in excess with allicin, results a medium allicin concentration of 0.9 mgalicina/galho hum ± 0.48. With the second method, witch consists on the reaction of 4MP in excess with allicin, results a medium allicin concentration of 2.5 mgalicina/galho hum ± 0.30.

Abstract:
Bridgewater, Gillian, and n/a. "Saving Alicia." University of Canberra. Creative Communication & Culture Studies, 1999. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060609.155229.

Abstract:
Saving Alicia is a creative thesis written to explore the possibility of incorporating some non-fictional concepts of neurophysiology into a work of fiction. The initial component presents the historical and contemporary context in which such a work is written along with an analysis of the writing techniques employed by other writers in the field. It sets out the aim of the subsequent creative composition. The second, and major, component of this thesis is a work of fiction. A story is developed in which the protagonist, a young woman, revives her deceased mother's neurophysiological research work in the hope that it will help her brain-damaged niece, Alicia, recover. For this she is dependent on two men who were her mother's colleagues. As they compete for her attention, while pursuing their own conflicting goals, the protagonist maintains her determination to keep her mother's work going. She has no prior knowledge of neurophysiology and, so that she can understand the research, she is keen to learn some of its basic concepts. Woven through the story of Saving Alicia are descriptions of neurons and their physiology. This is presented to the protagonist through the mouths of the two researchers. In this way, the non-fiction is interspersed with the fiction.

Inns, Daniel Photovoltaics &amp Renewable Energy Engineering Faculty of Engineering UNSW. "ALICIA polycrystalline silicon thin-film solar cells." Publisher:University of New South Wales. Photovoltaics & Renewable Energy Engineering, 2007. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/43600.

Full text
Abstract:
Thin-film silicon photovoltaics are seen as a good possibility for reducing the cost of solar electricity. The focus of this thesis is the ALICIA cell, a thin-film polycrystalline silicon solar cell made on a glass superstrate. The name ALICIA comes from the fabrication steps - ALuminium Induced Crystallisation, Ion Assisted deposition. The concept is to form a high-quality crystalline silicon layer on glass by Aluminium Induced Crystallisation (AIC). This is then the template from which to epitaxially grow the solar cell structure by Ion Assisted Deposition (IAD). IAD allows high-rate silicon epitaxy at low temperatures compatible with glass. In thin-film solar cells, light trapping is critical to increase the absorption of the solar spectrum. ALICIA cells have been fabricated on textured glass sheets, increasing light absorption due to their anti-reflection nature and light trapping properties. A 1.8 μm thick textured ALICIA cell absorbs 55% of the AM1.5G spectrum without a back-surface reflector, or 76% with an optimal reflector. Experimentally, Pigmented Diffuse Reflectors (PDRs) have been shown to be the best reflector. These highly reflective and optically diffuse materials increase the light-trapping potential and hence the short-circuit currents of ALICIA cells. In textured cells, the current increased by almost 30% compared to using a simple aluminium reflector. Current densities up to 13.7 mA/cm2 were achieved by application of a PDR to the best ALICIA cells. The electronic quality of the absorber layer of ALICIA cells is strongly determined by the epitaxy process. Very high-rate epitaxial growth decreases the crystalline quality of the epitaxial layer, but nevertheless increases the short-circuit current density of the solar cells. This indicates that the diffusion length in the absorber layer of the ALICIA cell is primarily limited by contamination, not crystal quality. Further gains in current density can therefore be achieved by increasing the deposition rate of the absorber layer, or by improving the vacuum quality. Large-area ALICIA cells were then fabricated, and series resistance reduced by using an interdigitated metallisation scheme. The best measured efficiency was 2.65%, with considerable efficiency gains still possible from optimisation of the epitaxial growth and metallisation processes.

Tome, Lester. "THE CUBAN BALLET: ITS RATIONALE, AESTHETICS AND ARTISTIC IDENTITY AS FORMULATED BY ALICIA ALONSO." Diss., Temple University Libraries, 2011. http://cdm16002.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p245801coll10/id/116137.

Full text
Abstract:
Dance
Ph.D.
In the 1940s, Alicia Alonso became the first Latin American dancer to achieve prominence in the field of ballet, until then dominated by Europeans. Promoted by Alonso, ballet took firm roots in Cuba, particularly after the Cuban Revolution (1959). This dissertation integrates historical research, postcolonial critique and discourse analysis to explore the performative and discursive strategies through which Alonso defined the identity of the Cuban ballet. The study examines the historical context of the development of ballet in Cuba, Alonso's rationale for the practice of this dance form on the Island, and the relationship between the Cuban ballet and the European ballet. Alonso insisted that the cultivation of ballet in her country was not an act of cultural colonialism. For her, the development of the Cuban ballet amounted to an exploration of a distinctive Cuban voice within this dance form, a reformulation of a European legacy from a postcolonial perspective. Her rationale for the practice of ballet in Cuba captured the tension between cosmopolitan and nationalist forces that defined the country's artistic production throughout the twentieth century. Alonso defended the legitimacy of the Cuban dancers' performances of European classics such as Giselle and Swan Lake. She cast Cuban dancers as both heirs of the European nineteenth-century classics, but also proponents of a distinctive national aesthetics defined by the accents that they brought to the performance of this repertory and that, in her opinion, were expressive of the Cuban culture. Alonso proposed that, among other elements, a special sense of musicality distinguished Cuban dancers: she recycled the image of Cubans as a musical people, a trope that commonly informs representations of Cubans and their culture. The phenomenon of Alonso and the Cuban ballet helped to redraw the international boundaries of this dance form, disassociating the notion of ownership of ballet's legacy from its geographic and cultural origins in Europe. In today's dance world, increasingly marked by the international flow of dance genres, the study of Alonso's promotion of ballet in Cuba sheds light on the practices and discourses through which dancers assimilate and take ownership of foreign traditions.
Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
The remarks on this subject stem from the conditions spatial works engender in the encounter with the viewer. The aim has been to provide the reader with a framework within which to place individual experiences of the works. The exhibition Spatial Works, to which this research paper is connected, exemplifies variations within spatial work. By organizing an exhibition around this context, the variations presented is fleshed out. The research preceding the exhibition has resulted in the development of a specific terminology; an articulation of different practices in installation art. Psychodramatic, Thespian, Temporal and Permutation are here seen as mannerisms of spatial works of art. The expanded significance presented in this paper is a feature of composition, as the dramatic condition characterizes the encounter between object and subject. The polyphony of information encountered by the viewer is not only created by the art work itself, but also by its signifying composition, so to say `al fresco´ of the work, of which the observer gains certainty of the pieces spatiality as well as understands of the work of art.
WIRE, Critical Writing and Curatorial Practice

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this article, we explore the Black Lives Matter activist Alicia Garza's Twitter usage during the month of June in 2020 with a critical discourse analysis (CDA). Our aim with the study was to examine the underlying motives and values in Garzas tweeting, and if there were any prevailing themes, in order to see if there was a difference between the discourse used for personal matters and the discourse related to her activism. To support our analysis we utilized critical theory to gain a critical reference and the two-step flow hypothesis to delve into the possible effects Garza's position as an opinion leader has on her tweeting. After processing and examining a total of 48 tweets from the month of June, through the use of coding, our analysis suggests that there are several prevalent themes that can be distinguished in her tweeting. The themes we found were personal tweets, tweets expressing solidarity, tweets urging for action, tweets exuding authority, and promotional tweets. The line between personal matters and the discourse related to her activism was found to be fluid and unable to be strictly defined.

Jiang, Xioben. "Gene Flow and Dispersal of the Caddisfly, Neothremma alicia, in the Rocky Mountains of Utah: A Multiscale Analysis." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2508.

Abstract:
We determined genetic variance and gene flow across multiple scales (reaches, tributaries, and catchments) to examine the dispersal ability of the caddisfly, Neothremma alicia in streams along the Wasatch Range in the Rocky Mountains of Utah. Neothremma alicia is one of the most abundant caddisflies in this region. We generated DNA sequence data (mitochondrial COI) from 34 reaches, nested in 15 tributaries distributed across 3 adjacent catchments. We identified 47 haplotypes from a total of 486 individuals. The most abundant haplotype (H1) was found at all sites/reaches and comprised 44% of the total number of individuals sequenced. The remaining rare haplotypes (46) were recently derived from the dominant, H1 haplotype. All of the rare haplotypes were restricted to a single catchment with 81 % restricted to either a single tributary or to two adjacent tributaries. We found the largest FST values among tributaries and the smallest FST values between reaches within tributaries suggesting that dispersal and gene flow is largely confined to within tributaries. This result supports the observation that aerial adults commonly crawl and fly along the stream corridor, especially in deeply incised valleys of mountainous regions. Our analyses show that this population has experienced a bottleneck that may have reduced population genetic variance from many haplotypes to one single dominant haplotype, H1. The rare haplotypes may have diverged since the bottleneck from the H1 haplotype and thus, have not had time to disperse outside their catchment and in most cases outside their specific tributary. Our analyses indicated that the bottleneck took place between 1,000 and 10,000 years ago. Thus, it appears that most rare haplotypes have been unable to colonize outside of the tributary they originated in for around 1,000 years.

Figueroa, Flores Ximena.

Abstract:
The principle purpose of this thesis is to examine the representation of exile in the selected work of four poets native to Valparaíso: Alicia Galaz, Osvaldo Rodríguez, Luis Mizón and Eduardo Embry; that were exiled from Chile after the 1973 coup d'état and created, from a distance, a poetic discourse on estrangement. Five books of poetry are discussed, three of which were writen in Spanish and two in French, outside of Chile (in Europe and the United States, places of refuge for the authors) and from the 1980s to the present day. These are: the book of poetry by Alicia Galaz, Señas distantes de lo preferido (1990); the book of poetry Cantos de extramuros (1994), by Osvaldo Rodríguez; the lyrical works in French by Luis Mizón: Province perdue (1988) and Marée basse. Suivi de six arbres (2012); and the poetic anthology by Eduardo Embry, Al revés de las cosas que en este mundo fenecen (2010). We postulate that these creations constitute an alternative type of writing from and about Chilean exile, that unlike the “canonical” writings from this period, their interest does not lie in articulating a testimonial of condemnation about what occurred during the Pinochet dictatorship, nor do they construct imagery that represents broken national identity. These discourses construct a nostalgic evocation of the provincial place of origin and a happy past (prior to exile), expressing the subjective reinvention of the common experience. We will review the following issues: the type of memorial writing they construct; the literary and/or linguistic identity of the poets; and their different levels of eulogy. Through the comparative analysis of the works, we have been able to determine five recurring literary themes, those that collectively constitute the categories that define our proposal concerning the poetic of uprooting: geographic displacement; emotional displacement; estrangement and "in-between"; the meta-poetics; and the critique of modernization, which we carefully examine throughout this investigation
