Full textIn 1992, the giant magnetoresistance effect was found in granular structures Cu-Co where metallic ferromagnetic particles are dispersed in a nonmagnetic metal matrix. It has been showed that this effect is very sensitive to the microstructure, particularly to the magnetic particle size, and to the distance between them. In the purpose to improve the understanding of the relationship between magnetoresistive properties and microstructure in granular compounds, the Cu80(Fe1-xCox) were elaborated by mechanical alloying, and study with different techniques. Each sample was structurally and magnetically characterized. The magnetoresistive properties were also studied. In the same way, granular ribbons Cu-SmCo5-Fe were investigated to characterize the influence of a hard magnetic phase on the magnetoresistive properties. All the results allow to correlate the microstructure and magnetic properties of the alloys to their magnetoresistive properties

Full textMagnetic and mechanical properties of Fe-49%Co-2%V and Fe-27%Co alloys, used in electric generators and transformers of the aircraft, have been investigated as a function of heat treatments. As regards to Fe-49%Co-2%V alloy, experimental results have shown that the magnetic and mechanical properties depend on the boundary spacing, which separate the microstructure crystallites, whatever the recrystallized fraction. The coercivity depends linearly on the inverse of the boundary spacing and the yield strength follows a modified Hall Petch relationship by taking into account the sub-grain size. Moreover, a linear relationship between the frictional stress and the long range order degree measured by neutron diffraction has been established. Finally, based on the experiment, a square polynomial degree relationship between the magnetic losses and the yield stress has been proposed. As respect to the Fe-27%Co alloy, the evolution of the {011}<100> Goss component during the manufacturing process has been investigated. This sought component is favorable for the magnetic properties of the sheet. It has been found that the origin of this texture is related to its development by shearing during hot rolling. Moreover, the development of the {111}<112> cold deformation texture was studied. It has been established by coupling EBSD analysis and simulation based on VPSC model that the {110}<111> system is the predominant active slip system during the plastic deformation. During the deformation, the Goss and the rotated Cube ({001}<110>) components, rotate of 35° and 55° respectively with regard to the transverse direction. That happens in order to place the active slip plane {110} in the favorable position for gliding to develop the {111}<112> component

Full textIn the field of powder metallurgy, there is a growing interest in coated powders that are of interest for fundamental and applied aspects: - A better homogeneity is fulfilled for the repartition of the different components. Diffusional and reactional mechanisms responsible of their densification during the sintering are improved. - The combination of properties of the core material and those of the shell opens a new route for the synthesis of powders with gradients functions. In this work, the processes used for the synthesis of coated particles are based on fluidized bed as a treatment medium that allows obtaining an optimal mixing of the powders during the deposition of coatings. Depending on the nature of the coating, the treatments used were performed in a gaseous atmosphere (Chemical Vapor Deposition and thermochemical treatment) or in a liquid phase (Autocatalytic processes). The choice of the different systems (core particle/ coating) was based on industrial considerations (WC-Co, W-Cu and W-Ag) and on fundamentals aspects (Fe-N). After the description of the different ways of synthesis of coated powders, their consolidation capabilities are evaluated by classical compacting/sintering processes. At the same time coated powders and equivalent mixing powders were realized to better understand the advantages of using coated particles for the compressibility and sintering ability. For every system, the highest density after sintering is required. For this point, the different microstructural characterizations performed in this work reveal the benefits of using coated powders. Furthermore, green strength of compressed samples is greatly improved with coated powders

Full textThis thesis reports on the structural and magnetic properties of ternary RTX, RTX2 and RT2X2 (R = Lanthanides; T = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co ; X = Si, Ge) isotypic with CeFeSi or TiNiSi, LaMnSi2 and ThCr2Si2, respectively. The accurate determination of the atomic coordinates in the CeFeSi-type RTX compounds by X-ray single crystal analysis allows us to specify the crystal-chemistry of these materials. We thus shown that the structural transition "CeFeSi-TiNiSi" results from the interplay of geometrical (R element size) and electronic (R-T interactions) effects. The development devoted to the CeFeSi and ThCr2Si2- type solid solutions led us to the deterrnination of the magnetic phase diagrams of the systems La1-xYxMnSi and La1-xYxMn2Si2. We thus could specify the influence of the geometrical (dMn-Mn intraplane) and electronic factor (dMn-Si) on the magnetic behavior of manganese in these compounds characterized by manganese square planes. The magnetic study of the RMnX compounds with TiNiSi structure enabled us to extend our analysis to the other structural arrangements (infinite chains) of the manganese sublattice. Moreover, the evidence during this work of new high temperature TiNiSi-type structure form for ThMnSi and NdMnGe compounds, previously reported as isotypic of CeFeSi, allows us to compare the magnetic behavior of manganese sublattice in these two structural types for given R and T atoms. Full textAquest treball s'enmarca en el context general de la síntesi i caracterització d'aliatges de base Mn o Ca que són utilitzats en processos de degradació de colorants azo habitualment emprats en les indústries tèxtils. Els aliatges han estat produïts essencialment per tres tècniques: fusió per arc (arc melting), refredament ràpid en una roda giratòria (melt spinning) per a la producció de cintes i mòlta mecànica (ball milling) per a la producció de pols. El baix valor de l'energia d'activació i la ràpida cinètica de degradació fa que els aliatges del sistema Mn-Al siguin candidats a ser utilitzats en el tractament de decoloració d'aïgues residuals industrials. S'ha analitzat l'addició de Fe o Co. La baixa resistència a la corrosió del Fe augmenta la velocitat de la reacció de degradació. Per altra banda, els resultats obtinguts en el sistema Ca-Al mostren que són agents reductors efectius en condicions de pH neutre

Full textAfter an introductive chapter on complex metallic alloys and surfaces, the thesis is divided into two distinct parts. The first part (Chap.II) concerns the structural determination of the 2-fold surface of d-Al-Cu-Co quasicrystal, by using LEED and STM. The results show (i) that the experimental terraces correspond to dense and Al-rich terminations -the element with the lowest surface energy- and (ii) that this decagonal phase could be entropically stabilized. In the second part of the manuscript (Chap.III, IV and V), we apply a surface science approach to solve a technological bottleneck: the adherence of quasicrystalline coatings on metallic substrates. We propose to grow a buffer layer that would accommodate the differences between the two materials. For that purpose, the ?-Al4Cu9 phase is a good candidate as it shares electronic and structural properties with both substrate and coating. Hence, we synthesize model interfaces by using MBE, first by adsorption and annealing of Cu on the 5-f surface of i-Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystal and then in the Al on Cu(111) system. Photoemission, STM and LEED experiments, along with DFT calculations show that a coherent interface can be grown between the ?-Al4Cu9 surface alloy and both the Cu and the quasicrystal. Those fundamental results are successfully reproduced in the real world, by growing similar interfaces using magnetron sputterring (Chap.V)
