Full textSince its development, radiography techniques have frequently been used in the study of archaeological findings. Today, radiography constitutes one of the favoured methods of examination of excavated objects. However, no reliable methodologies have been proposed to date which takes into account the specificity of the archaeological objects. This shortcoming is mitigated by the present study. The first part of this study focus on both the technical and practical aspects of radiography. The second part deals with the interpretation of radiographs (shape of the object and actions that result in this shape). A third part is devoted to images and drawings from radiography by integrating them with new techniques available from Information Technology. This methodology has been put into practice on archaeological objects. While accurately illustrating the proposals made in previous chapters, it also shows the importance of exchange between archaeologists, radiologists and restorers
Félix, Geoffroy. "Les savoirs non académiques des antiquaires : contribution à une sociologie de l'irrégularité." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016USPCC157.
Full textThe subject of this study is the circulation process of antique objects and of people in antique shops and galleries in Paris. Chapter 1 is devoted to establishing the notion of non-academic learning of antique dealers from a theoretical perspective by means of a field survey using semi-structured interviews. It emphasizes the peculiar nature of antique dealing, and the bearing that this aspect has had on the field survey. The object is to formulate a theory that explains how antique dealers contribute to the pricing and the « creation » of value of non-homogenous articles, that are exempt from « classic » production costs. Chapter 2 delineates the environment that structures the antique dealer’s life. Its first part analyses the manner in which you start out and orientate yourself in this very independent trade, where division of labour is practically non-existent, leading to the fortunes, reverse of fortunes, and misfortunes connected with prospecting for and authentifying objects. Its second part is a synthesis which reflects the morphology of antique dealing, stressing the linguistic and spatial dimensions inherent to its organization. The 3rd and last chapter is more theoretical. It focuses on the value of antique objects and determining their price. The idea is to bring to light a double coordination of transactions in order to uncover the hinge point between the specific structure of the antiques market as organized by the dealers and the supply and demand dynamics of trade in general

Full textThe subject of our study is about the elements of the male costume from the third to the fifth century in the eastern part of the roman empire. The work we have done is founded particularly on the archaeological material (like the cross-bow fibulae, the belt buckles, the strap-ends). We have elaborated a typology and a chronology for this material. When it was done, we have studied the correlations between those objects and the iconographic sources where they were represented. In the second part of our work we have synthesized all the facts which allowed us to understand for example the common points and the differences of this costume with the costume of the occident

Full textThis research in historical archaeology focusses on the storehouse of the habitation Loyola, an agricultural establishment located in French Guiana and administered by Jesuit missionaries between 1668 and 1768. The primary objective is to document the storehouse of the habitation using a functional and chronological perspective based on anexhaustive study of the material culture and the architectural remains. This research seeks to explore the colonial era which saw the arrival of African slaves in Guiana and later led to the interaction between three major cultural groups: European settlers, Amerindian peoples and members of the African diaspora. A second objective is to document the material expression of cultural identities and social dynamics resulting from the interaction between these groups under the Ancien Régime. The data for this master's thesis are based on archaeological investigations carried out between 2011 and 2015, which revealed multiple phases of occupation inside and outside the storehouse. The rich collection of archaeological materials from the excavations are the object of functional and spatial analyse and the results allowed us to identify a part of the objects stored inside the storehouse, in this case craft tools, agricultural instruments and fragments of bottles intended for the preservation of alcohols. South ofthe building, an important deposit of domestic remains associated with kitchen activities was documented. Moreover, by targeting certain elements of the furniture and assemblages and ethno-historical data, certain categories of objects have been associated with specific cultural groups present on site. The originality of this research lies in the fact that this is the first exhaustive study aimed at documenting a storehouse in context of an agricultural establishment in French Guiana. Finally, highlightingthe phenomena of metissagecontributes to the advancement of knowledge on the developments of the Creole society in French Guiana.

Full textThe scope of this thesis is to demonstrate the potential of terahertz (THz) imaging for non-destructive evaluation of various artworks associated with a complete 3D volumetric inspection. For this purpose we used a pulsed THz time-domain spectrometer and a portable millimeter continuous wave scanner. Time-of-flight of THz electric field and material dependent spectroscopic information allows the analysis of various artistic samples. THz imaging was able to reveal buried layer information, covered by several layers of painting and plaster. It was also possible to evaluate the variations of the painting thickness along with their spectroscopic features in the THz range. The portable imaging system was used for the inspection of real historical art samples preserved at museum of Aquitaine (France). THz computed tomography has been performed for visualizing volumetric objects. Different reconstruction methods have been compared in order to enhance final image quality with the optimization of the number of projections. Finally the tomographic technique was used for a complete 3D inspection of historical art objects

Full textAn ancient object that is no longer in use today continues however to survive in our contemporary life. It is presented to us with another function and often with another definition: it is no longer the useful object nor the practical tool that it used to be. In this dissertation, the value of the ancient object is studied in its immaterial and spiritual dimensions. We will thus renew its definition by reflecting on its essence and form from a contemporary viewpoint. The first part of the dissertation presents the concepts around the value of the ancient object in our time from a sociological angle. Next, we propose an approach to the concept of the ancient object as half-human and half-object. Since an ancient object from another era always keeps within itself its life in the period gone by, could this object exist as if it were an animated entity? In the second part, we have sought what characteristics could offer the ancient object this sensation of human life. Perhaps, first of all, the traces of people that it has accumulated visibly and invisibly? The Korean notion of “sonté” allows us to translate and express these visible and invisible traces on the ancient object. In the last part, the ancient object is studied in the field of contemporary art. Contemporary artists see the ancient object as a new object and give it another form and another essence which often is an allegory of human destiny
