Abstract:
This thesis describes implementation process of issue tracking systém in company Audatex Systems s.r.o. An analysis of company's processes has been performed and ideal state after implementation is proposed. The implemented system is going to be used not only for software defect tracking, but also for company's other needs like project management and internal communication. Output of company's analysis is a list of requirements for said system and a tender is performed -- along with setting up of test environments. Process of implementation and configuration is described along with experience from implementation proces. Each of shotlisted applications is configured for company's specific needs and is evaluated with an evaluation systém, that has been created for this specific tender. Situation after implementation is descibed in conclusion of this thesis. Main benefit of this thesis lies in comparision of applications and presenting their configurations for company's needs. Two free solutions are compared along with a comercial one. In conclusion this thesis answers a question, whether a comercial solution is really needed for this specific case.

Abstract:
Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) is a genre of computerized systems which allows system development corporations to efficiently and more easily manage, maintain and handle the applications lifecycle. These ALM systems have a wide variety of tools which can be integrated to enable and support collaborative work, while they act at the core of the organisation. Todays ALM systems support flexible system development methods throughout the entire development process. This paper focuses on a case-study of a Swedish business- and technology corporation and their use of two ALM systems with an aim to unravel the differences between these systems and their functionality to serve as a basis for decision making regarding their utilization of best practice with their ALM-Systems. Meanwhile we studied their approach to ALM systems to see if they were using them according to the initial idea of ALM systems. The study is of a qualitative characteristic and both semi-structured interviews with employees and self-gathered data have been used to enable our research and the creation of benchmarks. The results from our study show that the corporation uses both their ALM systems as intended from the initial idea, but we have identified a need to integrate one of the ALM systems with their costumer support portal through a web service. To enable this integration they will raise the amount of affordance to a distinctive degree due to the seamless connection and communication between the ALM system and the customer portal.

Full text
Abstract:
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems are used by thousands of engineering companies world wide. Improving these systems will have a drastic and global effect. One possible improvement is to integrate synchronous collaborative applications with PLM systems. These applications allow multiple people to work on a single digital object simultaneously. They have already been shown to reduce the time a task requires. Using these applications to complete a project will reduce the project time. However, simply including synchronous collaborative applications within a PLM system ignores powerful benefits that could provide further time-saving benefits. The integration must allow improved awareness at the project level, so that users can mediate their own actions. This thesis presents a method for such an integration. It also presents a prototype which implements that method. Testing was carried out using this prototype. As hypothesized, including synchronous collaborative applications shortened the overall project time. In addition, providing awareness information and allowing users to mediate themselves further shortened project times and reduced variation in those times. Proper integration should therefore provide awareness at the project level and allow users to mediate themselves to some extent.

Abstract:
Context. Application Lifecycle Management refers to the coordination of all aspects of software engineering, through a collection of integrated software development tools. More and more organizations are heavily relying on the ALM tools nowadays. Objectives. In this study we research ALM first as a business strategy, its roots, its advantages and disadvantages. As well as making a theoretical research, we seek out the setbacks of the practical side of ALM in order to find the areas needed for improvement, by investigating the ALM’s existing tools, interviewing ALM’s users, and using gained statistical data to derive practical facts about ALM. The goal of the thesis is to find out how ALM can be improved. Methods. The vast amount of sources, including articles, books, and journals is used to support our arguments and conclusions. A long online survey was carried with many participants to understand the practical side of ALM, as well as gain access to information about ALM’s setbacks. Results. The problems of ALM are recognized and named. Proposals are made in respect of how to deal with these problems. A list of what options need to be studied in the future, in order to improve the overall ALM design, and make it a powerful tool, is presented. A detailed plan for further research regarding this highly important issue is presented. Conclusions. We conclude that there are several ALM tool options on the market, all having their strengths and weaknesses. But in order for ALM to become an industrial solution and to be truly successful and effective in supporting the broader goals of the different organizations using it, the requests of the stakeholders towards deeper semantic integration between the various tool involved in the ALM processes need to be embodied in the current ALM offerings. We conclude that further research is needed in order to assess the proposals, and test the design ideas that are presented in the last chapter of this thesis.
This thesis concerns the authors and stakeholders of ALM. With the technological achievements taking place every day, and competition being very high, it is important to get the software product ready for release on time and of good quality. The current tools for managing of the application’s lifecycle are incoherent in terms of tool integration. In this thesis we describe the setbacks of ALM, according to interviewed stakeholders and authors of journals, articles and books. We conclude our thesis with the several proposed design options that may succeed in making ALM strong and consistent in the future. The proposed design mainly concerns the integration problems, and provides several potential solutions, aiming at easy to use and integrate tools. Further research areas are explained, and stated.

Abstract:
The increasing of competition, expanding markets and advanced technology create shorten lifecycle and the development process to improve product performance in terms of time, cost and quality. These shorten products lifecycle have led to increase volumes of waste generation and consequence impact to environment. EU directives have been introduced, such as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) and guidelines for the treatment of waste batteries (Battery), these directives are used to handle the hazardous substances which are harmful to human health and the environment. These regulations and standards have been put in place to force companies take their responsibilities on managing their products when reach to the end of life. Some companies have found that the returned product can be recycled or reused as an additional source of income (material recycling, or reuse of components after disassembly) in the manufacturing process.Knowledge related to the environmental performance (in terms of process design, production, transportation, storage, etc.) should be captured, evaluated and stored in knowledge base in order to share between users in different phases of the product lifecycle. Therefore, this research proposes a Knowledge Management Architecture based on a Multi-Agent System approach. The objective of this work is to propose a system that focuses on the concept of "sustainability” of products lifecycle by establishing the link between agents, who hold knowledge related to the environmental performances, and PLM system. The connection encourages companies considering the environmental impacts in their decision making at every stage of product lifecycle

Abstract:
This work focuses on the multidisciplinary and collaborative design of integrated systems. These systems are subject to an ever increasing number of requirements, leading to the need for more comprehensive functional and spatial integration. These different types of product integration are also at the origin of organizational complexity. This complexity arises not only from the great number of actors performing various engineering activities but also from the diversity of disciplines involved (designated in this manuscript as “multidisciplinary integration”). To encourage this multidisciplinary integration, “preliminary design” and “detailed design” have been identified as the most significant steps, especially since they are characterized by the collaboration of multiple experts handling a large number of product definition’ technical data. Systems that have been designed thanks to multidisciplinary approaches are generally poorly integrated. This is partially due to the compartmentalization of disciplines, as well as to the “project-planned” method, where project planning is predominant and information is mainly spread out “top-down”. To ensure better cooperation between the various disciplines, to enable decision making based on operational indicators and to analyze and understand the multidisciplinary integration processes, a method inspired by the founding principles of agile methods (the agile manifesto) is proposed for the collaborative design of integrated systems. This work is based on three complementary concepts. The first is, the Collaborative Actions Framework, an operational framework for collaboration around actions. One objective of this framework is to improve the collaboration among designers, whatever their disciplinary origin. It also ensures traceability between decision making and corrections/changes made to technical data. This traceability is made possible by the useof the second concept, called Workspace. Even if this term is already well known, we propose a new definition/usage to transform it into collaboration spaces. This concept offers great possibilities, including the continuous delivering/sharing of experts’ contributions, multidisciplinary integration and change validation. The exchange of technical data between workspaces, or simultaneous work on the same data, relies on the ability to manage several parallel versions of the same item into a single datamanagement system. These opportunities are offered by the third concept, called Branch & Merge. Finally, these three concepts are illustrated through a scenario and a computer prototype. A mechatronic product, “the synergistic combination of mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science, and information technology” (Harashima et al., 1996), is used to illustrate the opportunities offered by our work in terms of multidisciplinary integration during collaborative design

Abstract:

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to describe the Application lifecycle management (ALM), with a focus on two aspects of this system. The aspects are: the application for the administration of requirements JIRA and the application for the administration of the testing system Testlink. The basis for this endeavor was my practical experience with the implementation of the process ALM in the company LMC. Application lifecycle management is an essential part of companies focused on management processes for software development and it can thus improve their features, from the defining stage to the installation in the production sphere. In my thesis I focus on the application JIRA, as a replacement tool for the administration of requirements and the application Testlink, which is software for the administration and test management. The result aims to conclude whether these applications fulfilled the initial representations of the company and the requirements in the ALM framework. An evaluation of the positive and negative aspects during implementation is being carried, with a look at the effective implementation into practice. I shall try to define the general areas where eventual failures can be detected during the implementation process and that should be carried in mind during the process.

Abstract:
Service-orientation and the underlying concept of service-oriented architectures are a means to successfully address the need for flexibility and interoperability of software applications, which in turn leads to improved IT support of business processes. With a growing level of diffusion, sophistication and maturity, the number of services and interdependencies is gradually rising. This increasingly requires companies to implement a systematic management of services along their entire lifecycle. Service lifecycle management (SLM), i.e., the management of services from the initiating idea to their disposal, is becoming a crucial success factor. Not surprisingly, the academic and practice communities increasingly postulate comprehensive IT support for SLM to counteract the inherent complexity. The topic is still in its infancy, with no comprehensive models available that help evaluating and designing IT support in SLM. This thesis presents a reference architecture for SLM and applies it to the evaluation and designing of SLM IT support in companies. The artifact, which largely resulted from consortium research efforts, draws from an extensive analysis of existing SLM applications, case studies, focus group discussions, bilateral interviews and existing literature. Formal procedure models and a configuration terminology allow adapting and applying the reference architecture to a company’s individual setting. Corresponding usage examples prove its applicability and demonstrate the arising benefits within various SLM IT support design and evaluation tasks. A statistical analysis of the knowledge embodied within the reference data leads to novel, highly significant findings. For example, contemporary standard applications do not yet emphasize the lifecycle concept but rather tend to focus on small parts of the lifecycle, especially on service operation. This forces user companies either into a best-of-breed or a custom-development strategy if they are to implement integrated IT support for their SLM activities. SLM software vendors and internal software development units need to undergo a paradigm shift in order to better reflect the numerous interdependencies and increasing intertwining within services’ lifecycles. The SLM architecture is a first step towards achieving this goal.

Abstract:
An emerging problem in organisations is that there exist a large number of tools storing data that communicate with each other too often, throughout the process of an application or product development. However, no means of communication without the intervention of a central entity (usually a server) or storing the schema at a central repository exist. Accessing data among tools and linking them is tough and resource intensive. As part of the thesis, we develop a software (also referred to as ‘adaptor’ in the thesis), which, when implemented in the lifecycle management systems, integrates data seamlessly. This will eliminate the need of storing database schemas at a central repository and make the process of accessing data within tools less resource intensive. The adaptor acts as a wrapper to the tools and allows them to directly communicate with each other and exchange data. When using the developed adaptor for communicating data between various tools, the data in relational databases is first converted into RDF format and is then sent or received. Hence, RDF forms the crucial underlying concept on which the software will be based. The Resource description framework (RDF) provides the functionality of data integration irrespective of underlying schemas by treating data as resource and representing it as URIs. The model of RDF is a data model that is used for exchange and communication of data on the Internet and can be used in solving other real world problems like tool integration and automation of communication in relational databases. However, developing this adaptor for every tool requires understanding the individual schemas and structure of each of the tools’ database. This again requires a lot of effort for the developer of the adaptor. So, the main aim of the thesis will be to automate the development of such adaptors. With this automation, the need for anyone to manually assess the database and then develop the adaptor specific to the database is eliminated. Such adaptors and concepts can be used to implement similar solutions in other organisations faced with similar problems. In the end, the output of the thesis is an approachwhich automates the process of generating these adaptors.

Abstract:
In recent years, “smart products” have been introduced in many areas such as industry, health and transportation systems. These products are sources of information during their use phases. Collecting, processing this information is a definite advantage to aid the various stakeholders involved in the product lifecycle to improve the value chain. The large number of stakeholders and the diversity of their needs make it difficult to implement the information chains between the product and the stakeholders in the use phase (as well as the generation of information flows towards the upstream and downstream phases of the life cycle). Based on the concepts developed by the Closed Loop Lifecycle Management (CL2M) community, this thesis proposes a model of generic architecture for modeling the information chains and decision-making processes associated with a product during its use phase. The proposed model relies on secondary functions associated with the product, on holonic concepts, on product context (i.e. environment, task and user(s)) and on decision-making processes. This last point is inspired on Rasmussen's typology to characterize different cognitive levels. A methodological guide is also proposed helping to transform the model into operational architecture implementing information chains. The proposed architecture is implemented and validated as part of a POC (Proof of Concept) platform. Both the model and the guide are evaluated through scenarios representative of the use of a "smart" industrial test connector in the automotive field

Allanic, Marianne.

Full text
Abstract:
Neuroimaging domain is confronted with issues in analyzing and reusing the growing amount of heterogeneous data produced. Data provenance is complex – multi-subjects, multi-methods, multi-temporalities – and the data are only partially stored, restricting multimodal and longitudinal studies. Especially, functional brain connectivity is studied to understand how areas of the brain work together. Raw and derived imaging data must be properly managed according to several dimensions, such as acquisition time, time between two acquisitions or subjects and their characteristics. The objective of the thesis is to allow exploration of complex relationships between heterogeneous data, which is resolved in two parts : (1) how to manage data and provenance, (2) how to visualize structures of multidimensional data. The contribution follow a logical sequence of three propositions which are presented after a research survey in heterogeneous data management and graph visualization. The BMI-LM (Bio-Medical Imaging – Lifecycle Management) data model organizes the management of neuroimaging data according to the phases of a study and takes into account the scalability of research thanks to specific classes associated to generic objects. The application of this model into a PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) system shows that concepts developed twenty years ago for manufacturing industry can be reused to manage neuroimaging data. GMDs (Dynamic Multidimensional Graphs) are introduced to represent complex dynamic relationships of data, as well as JGEX (Json Graph EXchange) format that was created to store and exchange GMDs between software applications. OCL (Overview Constraint Layout) method allows interactive and visual exploration of GMDs. It is based on user’s mental map preservation and alternating of complete and reduced views of data. OCL method is applied to the study of functional brain connectivity at rest of 231 subjects that are represented by a GMD – the areas of the brain are the nodes and connectivity measures the edges – according to age, gender and laterality : GMDs are computed through processing workflow on MRI acquisitions into the PLM system. Results show two main benefits of using OCL method : (1) identification of global trends on one or many dimensions, and (2) highlights of local changes between GMD states

93
Recently, The Competition of global market is getting intense. The Information technology industry which was once high-profit is gradually becoming micro-profit. Lowering the capital and gaining the max efficiency has become the key factor to survive. Many reports indicated that 65 to 90 percent of the product’s capital is decided during the designing phase. Therefore, in order to bring down the capital, one should start from improving the designing phase. Moreover, the earlier the improvement is started, the better the result of lowering the capital would be. This paper refers to concept of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) in semiconductor industry, to analysis and to understand the Research and Development activities inside the enterprise. Then to design and implement a PLM-based systems. The result is to serve internal Research and Development user, and providing better product and knowledge management for integrating design and production, enhancing market planning capabilities for producing products suiting customers’ needs, providing management platform for the control, leverage, and protection of the IP of the enterprise and providing RDM information system for project leaders and executives.

Taiwan‘s IC industry influences the world and has a very profound impact. In these past years, Taiwan's semiconductor industry is with robust growth and already mature and has a complete industrial supply chain. Throughout the IC industry, the most valuable part is the upstream IC design companies, which are innovation-driven. Unlike downstream companies stress on efficiency and yield improvement. IC design industry is a kind of intelligence-intensiveness. Whether an IC product good or bad reflects this company's competitiveness. IC design companies focus on product development and innovation of the IC. Therefore, the development of information and the source code is the company's key profit sources. Therefore, the software project team needs tasks and job status visibility. This research will show two aspects. This study will review software engineer and application life cycle management literatures and further investigate the benefits of an IC design company that implements application life cycle management system.

97
With the intension in constantly enhancing product quality, efficiency, lower cost for more product selections, as a manufacture, the burden of the pressure is not only being carried with history, but also getting worse day after days. The industry is changing dramatically, in addition, customer needs are become more unpredictable. The supplier chain is constantly being reviewed and adjusted in order to survive in today’s complex environment. Other than the statement mentioned, the entire organization is facing various pressures and it is every individual’s responsibility for us to overcome all the obstacles mentioned in order to assist an organization to win the victory from the competition and reach organizational objective. Basically, the definition of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is to emphasize the technology of search, classify, and organize all specification documents, design documents, design drawings, reuse reports, and etc. Based on the information, an enterprise is able to analyses, track, and reuse the data and optimizes all data to be the most efficient emperies knowledge. With today’s technology, to make use of an outstanding PLM system is able to assist an enterprise to manage product lifecycle with entire content and process. Further more, a high performance PLM system will not only help an enterprise today, but also reveal enterprise uncertainties in the future. The PLM can withdraw the related information from the enterprise resource project (ERP), supply chain management (SCM), customer relation management (CRM) system, and make it taken place the connection with the product knowledge, making then it being used for and expanding an enterprise, purpose is for letting from make the market, from buy to make of owner, all can sooner and soon, high-efficiency work. Is also the management change strategy that the enterprise gives a new life, because it can help the manufacturing industry to go forward to go the innovation in the core business, reflecting the latest need of market, promoting the Time-to-Market speed, customer''s order quantity, product to hit the right the rate, reducing the bad rate, even strengthening the property and intellectual property rights of then utilization (the Asset& IP reuse), reach the conservancy target of the enterprise knowledge property. Take the related industry of the touch pad as an example, face different production in world and sell the base, plus the customer service net of spreading all over the world, the biggest challenge of the management and service is how reach the information to synchronize, be in conjunction with the development design, the development data security to control by the PLM project, customer the need service etc. ducts into the engineering, will be able to carry out the target structure of its global strategy "limitless boundary management and service". The tight digital nervous system decuple soon pushes the huge round of the times, the enterprise faces of the management environment rises at any time variety, the enterprise has to continuously weed through the old to bring forth the new, with new product, new service to respond the need of the market, then create the enterprise life continues again, so the new product development is an important mission of the enterprise. From the evolution of the new product development process, we can understand the importance that the customer leads to define first what is a new product. Inquire into again the evolution process of the new product development, the structure of the new product development, new product the successful key factor of the development, the performance evaluation of the new product development etc., the integration that then inquire into the knowledge management and sell and development at new product development the role played.

98
Automobile industry operates a delicate producing process. Furthermore, automobile industry in Taiwan can be roughly divided in two categories-car industry and parts industry. Car companies mainly produce cars by outsourcing or self-producing. As parts firms offer car parts for assembling, it’s called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture). Also, parts companies offer those products for car maintenance, it is known as AM (After Market) which offer parts of post-sale service. Taiwan parts companies mainly focus on AM market and supply 85% to 90% of car parts in the world. Result from the features of elasticity and rapidness of producing capacity in AM market, most of parts companies face a difficulty of resources shortage. Hence, it is an important issue to improve structure efficiency by cooperating with outsourcing companies and use resources effectively. Due to the rapid growth of information technology and the needs of cooperation on business operation, research and development and production between companies to companies, departments to departments or person to person, the concept of Collaborative Commerce gradually attracts entrepreneur’s attention. This research used Product Lifecycle Management and integrated system to combine parts companies and outsourcing companies as a simulative enterprise structure. It helped to speed up information delivery, improve both parties’ information knowledge and yet have the two parties work together as a team and increase outsourcing activity efficiency. Moreover, it collected, categorized and sorted out the technical document, image and norm during the product life cycle. Finally, it analyzed the relative information gathered during product life cycle, and then used them to the next product life cycle, as well as, accumulated the information during the process as an important knowledge for the company. This research takes company T as a case. Company T is a manufacturer of transmission system of automobiles. Except developing new product, customized product becomes one of the competitive advantages of the company. In new product market, innovator usually earn more money than the followers, it is a key reason company T sells customized products. Due to the rapid growth of orders and resources shortage, company T had considered different methods to improve producing capacity, for instance, build more factories, increase assembling lines or outsourcing. However, these methods can not catch the pace of the dramatically growing orders. And it found that outsourcing non-core-producing-process is the most effective way to improve production. But this method requires even more effective management and rapid response for R&D, manufacturing progress, technical document and images between both parties. Due to the importance of outsourcing activity for automobile industry, this research will focus on the outsourcing activities during product life cycle. Moreover, this research aims to increase business effectiveness and create competitive advantage for company T and the outsourcing company. And yet, offering a model for other companies in the industry. The research revealed that it was not enough for company to improve producing efficiency by simply changing the producing process of a company. It is vital to integrate the whole supply chain and improve the efficiency of the whole supply chain. Take company T as an example, compare to over relying on past experiences, information technology could help improve efficiency a lot and make manufacturing company and outsourcing firm worked as a team. Through web platform system, enterprises combined the outsourcing firm as one virtual structure, and yet, enterprises could become a structure with features of high efficiency and low cost. The new system will help companies largely in the rapid changing environment.

Abstract:
The development of Information Technology is, according to the Swedish Government, the most important area of development. The costs of IT in governmental agencies are somewhere in between 20 to 25 billion SEK, paid by taxpayers and one of the largest cost items in the Swedish governments resources. Despite this, every third Swedish governmental agency lacks an IT-strategy and is unable to meet needs for flexibility and control. The study aims to reveal barriers that prevent an active application lifecycle management (ALM) at Swedish governmental agencies and to answer the question: “How do Swedish authorities handle their proprietary applications from a lifecycle perspective; financially and technically?” The case study will be conducted at the Social Insurance Agency (SIA). The SIA distributed, in 2010, about 6 % of the Swedish GDP and is mainly funded by grants and loans from the Swedish National Debt Office. The survey will be studied from a management accounting and ALM perspective. Management accounting is the actions within organizations to achieve financial goals. ALM is the lifecycle of an application that consists of the phases; requirements specification, development, testing, deployment and maintenance. The study will also investigate the technical debt at the governmental agencies. Technical debt refers to the work which has to be completed before an application can be considered finished. The survey is a qualitative study based on interviews with an exploratory purpose. The results are generalised to reflect a greater part of the Swedish authorities and showed that Swedish governmental agencies have inadequate handling of their proprietary applications and that each application is financially linked to one or more projects simultaneously. The models made are to facilitate the understanding of the different stages of ALM in synergy with the management accounting. Theoretically, the Maintenance phase allocates approximately 90 % of the total costs, whereas in governmental agenises it stands for about 20 %. Theoretically 10 % of the total costs are allocated to the Development phase, whereas in governmental agencies the corresponding amount is 80 %. A consequence of this is increased technical debt. The technical debt at Swedish authorities is often funded with loans, which is not allowed according to the Swedish National Debt Office. The SIA exceed budgets without asking for increased funds and according to the Swedish Audit Office, so does also 1/3 of the Swedish governmental agencies, meaning that they must handle the financial complications internally by moving funds amongst different departments and projects, also spending money meant for development on maintenance. Future studies can be made as investigations on how management accounting and ALM can be implemented on a safe and effective manner in a governmental agency.

Hadebe, Dudu Promise. "An inquiry into Eskom transmission's new lifecycle model application and its impact on organizational effectiveness." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/9934.

Abstract:
The recent global economic challenges have drastically impacted several economic sectors across the world. As such, Eskom, the South African electricity utility, has experienced a number of changes, ranging from the organisational structure to the functional processes or models, to meet the demands of the volatile global market. This research acknowledges that the Eskom Transmission organisation, a division within Eskom, has interrelated departmental processes. However, the transition from the conceptual phase to the execution (implementation) phase had a number of misalignments. These manifested in the following challenges, amongst others: late execution and completion of projects which often results in cost overruns; poor quality completed projects; a high number of projects at execution stage with inadequately defined scope of work which led to scope changes during implementation; and a high staff turnover, particularly of project managers. As such, the project lifecycle model was adapted to address these challenges. This research focused on the change management principles that were followed in realising the new Eskom Transmission lifecycle model, and investigated the impact that this had on the people “living” with the new model as well as the inter-departmental relations, control mechanisms, attitude towards the management, and organisational performance. Available literature on change management, as well as some aspects of organisational behaviour, such as organisational performance, were utilised to try and provide an understanding of the above-mentioned areas of interest. The chosen and most appropriate methodology for collecting data was the qualitative approach as it allowed for descriptive and extensive information gathering. The researcher sought subjective information through human interpretation. For data collection, a comprehensive questionnaire for all the stakeholder groups was used, as well as documentation analysis. The data was then analysed and interpreted, which allowed for pertinent findings and recommendations to be made. The findings included the establishment that Eskom Transmission adapted Kotter’s (1988) eight stage model in implementing its new lifecycle model. The impact of Eskom Transmission’s new lifecycle model on the people “living” with this model was found to be premature to measure. However, an improvement has been noted in the definition of the scope of work for projects, possibly owing to more effective interactions between employees during project meetings and is an indication that the new model is a contributor towards improving Eskom’s organisational performance. Further findings included inadequate stakeholder consultation, which rendered the followed implementation strategy non-optimal; as well as varied stakeholder views on the support of the new lifecycle model for Eskom Transmission’s goals and vision. The latter suggests an opportunity for Eskom Transmission management to review the lifecycle model to improve its alignment to the division’s goals and vision in order to encourage commitment levels which, amongst others, impact organisational effectiveness.
Thesis (M.Com.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville, 2010.

Abstract:
100
Software development is a fast moving field where changes in technology – including language, computing platform, and software lifecycle methodology, and so on – often require the software development teams to make the corresponding changes in the affected aspects of software development in order to benefit from the new technology. Since a change can be risky and incurs a cost, it is important that the change be performed in a systematic manner, for only then can the change be undertaken prudently and economically. In this thesis, we take the migration approach – effecting the only required technology-driven change while keeping all other aspects of the development unchanged – to coping with two important and increasingly frequently encountered changes. First, we look at the problem of migrating applications from the web to the cloud without changing the functional requirements of the overhauled applications. An attribute-driven method is proposed for converting a legacy application into its SaaS equivalent through migration. The quality attributes pertaining to multi-tenancy, tenant isolation, and variation management requirements are captured as quality attribute scenarios. Aspect-oriented technology is applied to the existing design, wherein a quality attribute scenario is realized as an aspect to be weaved into the join points identified from the existing design. The attribute-driven method is illustrated with a case study. Second, we look at the problem of assisting software development team in adopting an application lifecycle management (ALM) platform without changing its current methodology. Improved on a previously developed software lifecycle management reference model and conversion tool, an experiment is performed to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the methodology.

Abstract:
Companies are increasingly aiming to deliver higher quality products in shorter time and at a reduced cost. One source to achieve competitive advantage is the implementation of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). This solution is considered a business strategy that aims to optimize the flow of product information and related processes throughout its life cycle. One of the areas that is part of PLM is traceability, which allows access to all product data through registered identifications. Some of the traceability advantages include the ability to combat product counterfeiting, to check warranty status and to provide customers access to item information at any time and without any cost. These needs were met by a remote-controlled buoy company called Noras Performance. In partnership with GenSYS - Smart Production Systems, it has developed a tracking system capable of tracking the buoy (U-SAFE) and present article information to distributors, service and/or customers. Therefore, the development of a technological solution related to product traceability is the main goal of this project. In order to, achieve this purpose it was necessary to identify the requirements to be incorporated into the tracking system, to specify its constituent elements and to understand if the developed features were working as intended. After validating the system operability, its implementation was monitored in the company. The various tests performed on the solution contributed to ensure the correct functioning of the system. Furthermore, they also ensured that most of the requirements were met and each of the features developed was explained in detail. At Noras Performance, implementing the solution helped solve problems that were preventing the buoy commercialisation. In addition, the solution offered by GenSYS becomes more complete by encompassing the production, distribution and usage phases of the product, bringing it closer to a PLM solution.
