Full textTraditionally, french policy considers disarmament as a part of security. Since 1919, france makes use of disarmament for the benefit of her security : against the german rearmement first; then, since 1945, in favour of the development of her national nuclear forces; finally, against proliferations, i. E. Her own strategic superiority. France acts very actively, since 1978 above all, but she is often criticized (ex. : international disputes concerning her latest nuclear tests)

Full textDespite the ministerial instability of the third republic, the army benefited from a certain political unanimity, particularly before and during the first world war. At the beginning of the between the wars period, this feeling had not changed, but the financial means available to france were much more limited. In a little over thirty years, from 1890 to 1925, the relationship between armament and political objectives had developed considerably. Of course the war played a strategic severing role, while techological developments also brought their share of upheavals. However, the efficiency of the military tool does not depend solely on the means that politics and science have available to them ; the use made of that tool remains a very important factor. Here, results vere unequal. The weight of a troubled, and somewhat humiliating, past determined french strategy during the newly developing third republic, with regards to weapons as well as to other areas. The first world war forced the regime to be effective in order to avoid an upheaval of power, or even a kind of second empire. With the victory in 1918, the republic had, in some respects, fulfilled its mission. It then aspired to peace, wanting above all to forget the war. As a result, the army lost its place in the hierarchy of preoccupations. This change brought its share of difficulties. Theories for employing the military tool were obliged to take into consideration the reduction of means and to seek to optimise. Forced to do so by the clauses of the versailles treaty, germany succeeded in this transformation. Cradled by an illusion of materiel abundance, then disconcerted by its sudden reduction, the french army could not manage to efficiently adapt its armament to the new strategy imposed by peace

Full textAfter a critical exam of previous works in Europe, the terminology employed for various flying weapons has been detailed. Likewise, their technical characteristics bearing on different types of protection have been defined. Limits of this investigation are present french territory and their occidental european fringes between XIth (crossbow practice attested) and XVth century, after fire-arms diffusion. The part which concerned archaeological and archaeometrical studies is the most important (3000 objects have been studied corresponding to 110 sites). The results are referred to the typology, fabrication techniques and they allow isolating pertinent discrimination criterions and also standards by site or chronology. Laboratory studies are limited (for lack of money and time) but their contribution about techniques and metal quality is essential. Projectile kinds and repartition have been observed and reflect military tactics; architectural studies have completed this work by observation of arrowloops positions in Middle East fortresses (Syria). The last part is talking about contribution of iconography and texts, to confronted different sources. 600 arts works have been observed and they provide unpublished informations. Tests series have offered important knowledges relating to quantitative and qualitative aspects of the production

Full textThis thesis set out to explain that arms export marketing is now reality as far as French, American, Brazilian and Chinese manufacturers are concerned since 1945. At the same time arms export are less and less a tool of diplomacy but have to be studied as a transfer of defense related technologies to meet commercial and industrial objectives. To meet this requirement arms producers had to devise specific commercial organization to market arms overseas. It all adds up to by similar objectives and by nearly similar commercial stuctures to export arms in the world even if France, USA, Brazil and the People's Republic of China were basically different in 1945

Full textSituated in the heart of the bay of Biscay, La Rochelle, right from its foundation, at the beginning of the XIIth century, was a community of fishermen. It then became one of the most dynamic cities in western France. In 1890 the commercial port moved to a new site, liberating the old port in the city centre for fishing activities. Many sailing ships came to sell their fish on an attractive fish market boosted by the railway connection to the inland part of the country in 1857. A new era started with industrial trawling, a major innovation in Great Britain. In 1871, the English shipowner Craggs tried to introduce steam-powered trawling but suffered a setback . However from 1904 to 1920 important armaments in industrial trawling were created, making La Rochelle, in this early period of expansion, the second fishing port in France and the first one on the Atlantic coast. After the stagnation of French fisheries and a crisis of Rochelais steam-powered trawlers, a new expansion of the port occured after WWII. In the sixties, La Rochelle became the 4th fishing port in France, until in 1965 a break in industrial fishing activities resulted in the loss of the last big trawlers in 1994. There have been numerous documents about other fishing ports in France. This study aims to concentrate on the history of industrial fishing in the port of La Rochelle over a century, highlighting its economic, sociological, political and ecological dimensions. For this purpose a comparative study has been made, analysing the characteristics and the reasons of this expansion as well as the ones of a rapid and premature decline

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to compare the United Kingdom military nuclear policy with the French experience. Our work is a comparative and systematic analysis on 1939-1993 period: policy-making, strategic planification, nuclear warfare, strategy thinking and budget structure. In a first time, our demonstration was to prove the intellectual and technical framework of French and British nuclear programs, from genesis to full development. Maturity of militaries bureaucracies fit with a period of military spending reduction. This cut in military budget is the main factor for the adaptation of the armies models. In a second time, we can notice that the weakness of political advantages gathred by our two countries has only very tiny linkage with the collapse of feature of operational nuclear warfare and alliance politics. From 1962 to 1993, the signification of the “special relationship” between the United Kingdom and the United State was only a situation of absolute dependence. The result of French “politics of … “

Full textThe Rafale fighter is the outcome of the most ambitious armament program ever engaged by the French Air Force. Projected to be the only fighter serving in the French military in the coming decades, it will shape the French Air Forces until 2040. The Rafale program intertwines military, political, industrial and financial interests at the highest levels of the French government and represents the essence of a French major armament program. This essential feature requires a comprehensive approach in order to meet this broad array of interests. The Rafale program has had a specific trajectory. After an initial definition stage which took place in the context of European cooperation, the operational need was finally reviewed on a national basis. This phase resulted in the official launch of the Rafale program both for the French Air Force and the French Navy. During the 1990s, it faced a severe budget constraint which hampered development and production. Following its initial operating capability in the mid-2000s, the Rafale fighter was successfully employed in operations in Afghanistan and Libya. Simultaneously, the Rafale began its marketing campaign to win international bids. The Rafale realized its first achievement with India’s decision, in January 2012, to purchase the French fighter

Full textThis thesis studies the changes in French and Swedish arms export policies since the end of the Cold War. It seeks to explain why we first observe a converging trend between the two states (1990-2005) and then a diverging trend (2005-2015). The thesis shows that the explanations for policy change do not stem only from international (economic and diplomatic transformations) or domestic factors (defence industry evolutions, arms trade scandals, government political shifts), but from the power struggles between “pro-support” and “pro-control” arms export coalitions. The intervention and succession of causal mechanism requiring actors’ political work is necessary to link the international and domestic factors of change to the observed reforms in arms export policies

Full textThe French Chemical industry appears in the beginning of the century as a backward industry compared with the german one. Indeed there is a slow growth and a a certain number of progress, in research for instance. The Chemical Industry is structured by a general system of cartels and harsh labour. At the outbreak of the War, the French Chemical industry is ill prepared and has to shift rapidly. It’s improvment is made through the basic development of traditionnal factories and an intensification of work due to colonial workforce for the most. At the end of the war, the chemical industry as to convert to civil markets. The 1920-1921 crisis shows the fragility of this industry. When the economic growth is back in 1922-29 the German chemical is more competitive thane ever having rationalized its structures. Thus the inner market is developped. At the end of the period, scientific research is rising. Nevertheless the capitalistic transformation is far for being made. The branch is still divided in archaïc (foreign workforce) and modern trends

Full textAs a roman colony and administrative capital of the Gaul Lyonnaise province, the city of Lugdunum entwines, since its origins, direct links with the exercitus romanus. This city was entangled directly and often in major military conflicts. Furthermore, it was the only settlement in Gaul to welcome a roman cohort, whose existence is confirmed by written sources such as funerary inscriptions. Taking into account these evidences, and lacking of recent findings, Archeology, lightly valued till now, appears as a great important source to understand the procedures of the military presence and occupation in Lugdunum. Recentdevelopments in both rescue and voluntary Archeology, favored the assemblage of a great number of collections. Among the gathered sets of instrumentum, certain objects arise mainly from the military sphere, the militaria. The work set out at the center of this thesis enables to approach the interpretation of the roman military presence in Lugdunum through the perspective of these archeological artifacts. The present study relies on a militaria corpus of 496 fragments to 337 objects, diffused over forty sites, scattered on the territory of the roman colony and its outskirts. Each artifact wassubjected to a thorough research, according to the classifications in use: defensive and offensive armament, belts, straps, harness and others. A technological, typological and chronological analysis is proposed for each one of them, based on the fieldwork observed at the scale of the roman world. After analyzing the data collected, conclusions about space, context and quantity can be established, as well as the notion of a possible craft-related production of certain types of military weaponry and equipment in Lugdunum. The results of this study provide a support for a broader discussion, as it concerns the roman military occupation in Lyon between the 1st century BC and the 4th century AD. The combination of the archaeological, historical and epigraphical data allows several hypothesis on the nature of the military establishment in Lugdunum, but also on its evolution, density andits role on the urban network of the colony of roman law
Candelon-Boudet, Frédéric. "Commander au long cours depuis la Guyenne : les capitaines de navire bordelais au XVIIIe siècle." Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018BOR30033.
Full textModern historians have good knowledge of the 18th century growth of Bordeaux harbour activity. But works about crew members are scarce while paradoxically such a study had already been led for the « Guyenne » capital as early as in the end of the Middle Ages. Ship commanders stand out from all other rather discreet socio-professional categories related to sailors for many reasons : first, because of the symbolical and legal dimension of their occupation which implies their responsibility whenever it comes to the transportation of men and goods ; secondly, because of their huge fields of expertise, like to be able to steer boats over long distance, to handle crews of dozens of members or to carry out commercial transactions ; last, but not least, because of the social mobility offered by their position. Highly documented in a rich archive collection kept and preserved in Bordeaux, captains have turned into key players of the maritime trade of the modern era. By frequently working and diverting themselves with traders and ship owners, they developed a trusting relationship with them. The question is to determine how this cooperation was shaped, and to know if trading or ship armament were possible career changes within the reach of captains, and if not, how they could integrate the urban elites at work under the « Ancien Régime ». When the colonial and slave trade ensured the Bordeaux harbour’s prosperity, it is the identity of the merchant navy ship commanders working from the capital of « Guyenne » that will be here studied, from the Regency to the French Revolution

It integrates the analysis of the influence of its models on two artists working mainly in Nuremberg, painters and engravers Virgil Solis and Jost Amman, and more widely, on German artistic production of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries
