Abstract:

The subject of this article is the genetic affinity of the Balkar, Karachay and Kumyk folklore. Interconnection between three closely related nations – Balkars, Karachays, Kumyks, whose origins take roots in the ancient time and continued in medieval times, are reflected virtually in all folklore genres: myths, heroic epos, ritual and nonritual poetry, heroic-historical songs, etc. The object of this research is the folklore and historical materials that testify to close genetic affinity of the Balkars, Karachays, Kumyks. The scientific novelty of this work consists in analysis of the material that demonstrates significant commonness of Balkar-Karachay-Kumyk folklore. Therefore, the targeted study of folklore ties of Balkars-Karachays and Kumyks with regards to all genres, represents not only scientific-theoretical significance, but also allows determining specific cultural-historical paths of development of these ethnoses along with other ethnic groups of North Caucasus. The conducted analysis of tales, nursery rhymes, skipping-rope rhymes, proverbs and sayings of the three ethnic groups emphasizes their typological similarities and genetic affinity. This allows formulating the conclusions of scientific-theoretical nature, as well as on the history of the indicated ethnoses.

Abstract:

Intercommunal, socio-economic, and political relations in the North Caucasus have historically revolved around access to this mountain region's prized pasturage and scarce farmland. Given the centrality of the land question in the North Caucasus, it is unsurprising that historiography on land relations in the region has been highly politicized. This article examines how indigenous writing on the history of land relations in the central Caucasus – a region inhabited by today's Kabardians, Balkars, Ossetians, Ingushes, and Karachais, and dominated by the princely confederation of Kabarda before the tsarist conquest – has been subject to wide revision in response to changes in local and national political dynamics and the emergence of ethnicized identity politics. In the late-imperial and early Soviet periods, Karachai, Balkar, and Ossetian elites-cum-historians, writing for an audience of imperial policy-makers, crafted histories to influence state policies toward land reform. By the 1930s, historians from the region tailored their histories of land relations to the prerogatives of Soviet nationality policies. The ideas contained in these histories impacted the construction of national identities in the Soviet period. Post-Soviet Karachai and Balkar intellectuals, seeking to establish new post-colonial national histories for their peoples, have reinterpreted the history of land relations in order to depict their ancestors as independent of Kabarda's land-based dominance. This revisionism is part of the struggle of the Karachais and Balkars against their historiographical erasure, which was a product of the exclusion of the Karachais and Balkars from the family of Soviet nations during their deportation and exile to Central Asia from 1944 to 1957 and their subsequent political and cultural marginalization.

Abstract:

The article deals with one of the relatively subtle “national” versions of the North Caucasian muhajirism, namely, immigration and colonization in Anatolia of the Karachais and Balkars. The reasons, phases, circumstances and results of the resettlement of representatives of these closely related peoples to the Ottoman territory and the peculiarities of their initial adaptation to new living conditions are considered. Archival documents, first introduced into scientific circulation, shed light on the dynamics of Karachai-Balkar immigration, the motives and aspirations of the migrants, their numbers, the attitude of the Porte to the reception of new subjects and, in general, its policy of settlement and socio -economic support of the muhajirs.

Abstract:

The article examines the creativity of the Balkar playwright Issa Botashev, special attention is paid to the syn-thesis of documentary and artistic, inherent in the creative manner of the writer. An artistic study of the fate of historical figures, events, documentary facts in the life of the people is conditioned by the cognitive needs of the author and contemporary reader. The factual basis of the plays of I. Botashev contributes to the creation of an artistic model of reality, allows you to convey the essence of characters and depicted events, life reliability. The role of the playwright in the revival of the spiritual culture of the Balkars in the second half of the 20th century is noted.

Abstract:

The article presents information on floristic findings in the Kabardino-Balkari Republic. As a result of expedition research in 2020-2021 and inventory studies in the Herbarium of the Tembotov Institute of Ecology of Mountain Territories RAS, we revealed nine species new to the Kabardino-Balkar Republic and new locations of ten vascular plants species. Species new to the region flora were Carex acuta, Genista angustifolia, Amorpha fruticosa, Ambrosia psilostachya, Mercurialis annua, Echinocystis lobata, Phlomis majkopensis, Cleistogenes squarrosa, Bidens frondosa. New locations of seven species were identified for the Balkarskiy floristic region. These were three native species (Carex flacca subsp. erythrostachys, C. songorica, Eriophorum latifolium) and four alien species (Oenothera biennis, Elsholtzia ciliata, Sigesbeckia orientalis, Bidens frondosa). Carex elongata, Genista angustifolia, Ambrosia psilostachya, Mercurialis annua, Cleistogenes squarrosa, Amaranthus albus and alien species Acer negundo were revealed for the Tsentralno-Elbrusskiy and Kabardinskiy floristic regions, respectively. We also found the alien species Amorpha fruticosa, Echinocystis lobata and rare steppe species Phlomis majkopensis, Glaucium corniculatum in the Tursko-Sunzhensky floristic region. We provided data on floristic findings indicating the coordinates of the locations, species habitat preferences, and distribution in the Caucasus according to earlier literary sources.

Abstract:

This paper deals with the properties of wh-questions in Balkar. It is shown that wh-in-situ structures in Balkar are island insensitive (with an exception of coordinate structures). I discuss the complement/adjunct asymmetry regarding intervention effects. I also consider embedded multiple wh-structures. In this paper, I discuss a puzzle that the Balkar data presents to the prominent theories of wh-questions, which do not explain the properties it shows.

Abstract:

This article discusses the concept of kysh (winter), which is one of the main elements of the concept sphere of the Karachay-Balkar language picture of the world. The national and cultural specificity of the concept under study is revealed on the basis of various works of art, phraseological units, proverbs and sayings, as well as dictionary definitions. The paper presents the semantics of the lexical units that make up this concept, reveals its conceptual features based on various associations of native speakers, analyzes the linguistic representation and cognitive characteristics of this concept in the Karachay-Balkar language picture of the world, and therefore considers paremiological units that represent the ethno-cultural specifics of the Karachay-Balkar language, features of the ethnic worldview and world perception. The main distinguishing features of winter, attributes, and accompanying factors are considered.

This article deals with one of the topical problems of the lexicology of the Karachay-Balkar language. It presents various characteristics of phraseological units that include names of clothing and jewelry, and shows their structural and functional-semantic specifics. It is revealed that this group of phraseological units includes about 80 units. It is established that they are generally ethnoculturally marked and reflect an important segment of the Karachay-Balkar language picture of the world.

Se presta especial atención a la posibilidad de identificar la presencia de dioses extranjeros (como sucede en epigrafías similares, tales como la griega o la etrusca). Dada su rareza fonotáctica, es probable que las formas íberas -al y balkar sean préstamos, por lo que la interpretación de balkar como una adaptación del teónimo Melqart resulta especialmente interesante.

Abstract:

Aim. The presented study aims to analyze the external and internal environment of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, identifying opportunities and threats to the region’s economic and social development.Tasks. The author examines the methodology for analyzing the external and internal environment of the region; analyzes global opportunities and threats to the development of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, as well as strengths and weaknesses of a subsidized region according to basic limiting economic factors.Methods. The author conducts an assessment of the region based on the basic factors of the external and internal environment. Strategic trends are summarized and inferred from statistical observations. The study also uses analytical and synthetic methods.Results. The Kabardino-Balkar Republic, a region with a continuously low level of economic and social development, is chosen as the subject of the study. It is established that this region’s natural resources can serve as a driver of economic growth. However, the region’s low investment attractiveness and the large amount of investment required make it impossible to seize this strategic opportunity. Due to the low level of economic development in the Republic, there is an outflow of the working-age population, which is an obvious strategic threat. The level of development of production facilities and infrastructure is below the national average. The region’s main specialization includes the agro-industrial complex (AIC), wholesale and retail trade. There is a lack of capital for the implementation of the development strategy in the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, the subnational budget largely depending on gratuitous contributions from the center.Conclusions. The conducted analysis of the external and internal environment makes it possible to identify opportunities and threats and determine strategic priorities supported by competitive advantages.

Abstract:

In a foothill zone of Kabardino-Balkar Republic in 2018-2020 researches on identification of the most effective preparations on crops of sunflower were conducted. As objects of research sunflower hybrids Donskoy 22 F1 served. Donskoy 342 and EU Muse. The following preparations were used: Albite, Polidon Biot Olive. Use of the preparations Albite and Polidon Biot Olive positively influences viability of seeds, duration of the vegetative period, a crop and quality of sunflower. The analysis of the conducted researches showed that cultivation of hybrids of sunflower of the EU the Muse in the conditions of a foothill zone of Kabardino-Balkar Republic is the most favorable.

Abstract:

The article presents the phenomenon of bilingualism in modern Karachai-Balkarian poetry. The study is conducted based on Russian-language works of poets, whose creative maturity came to the post-perestroika era, and artists of the newest generations, entered the literary process at the junction of the XX-XXI centuries. The aim of the study is to identify the main trends and features of this phenomenon in the poetic discourse of the Karachay-Balkar masters of the word of indicated period. In the course of the analysis, the author revealed heterogeneous models of artistic expression, manifested in the same verse culture each generation differently. The research centers on the poetic works of modern Karachay-Balkar poets of the turn of the late XX - early XXI centuries: Arthur Bakuev, Shahriza Bogatyreva, Aishat Kushcheterova, Nauruz Bairamkulov, Ismail Baituganov. For the first time new names are introduced into scientifi circulation, and the Russian-language creativity of two generations of poets is gradually considered. As a research method an integrated approach is used, combining elements of comparative-typological, system-integral and historical-literary analysis. The results contribute to the development of the theory of text and discourse in the aspect of considering the phenomenon of bilingualism in the latest Karachay-Balkar literature.

Abstract:

The article analyzes the construction of wheeled roads in Balkarian societies in the second half of the 19th century, based on the attracted archival material, which were extremely necessary for the residents of high-mountainous villages and the Russian administration. The construction of roads required colossal efforts of all residents of Balkaria, support of the district and regional authorities – gunpowder, sappers, engineering solutions. The material on the financial, material and labor costs of the entire population of Balkar societies is generalized, which gave reason to call them folk. The roads connected the highlanders with the flat part of the Kabardian district, helped to draw them into the system of commodity-money and socio-cultural relations of the Russian Empire. The facts indicate that the inhabitants of Balkar societies have certain financial savings spent on vital communication routes for them, which created the best conditions for the annual transportation of livestock to the plane – in spring and autumn, the delivery of bread, household goods, products of factories and plants, and the sale of manufactured products. The constructed roads contributed to the transformation of the traditional organization of work and life, ensuring the penetration of new social relations into the environment of Balkar society.

Abstract:

Aim. To study the peculiarities of carrying clinically significant allelic variants of TPMT and DPYD genes associated with the response to drug therapy in cancer practice among 9 ethnic groups of the Russian Federation. Materials and methods. The study included 1446 conditionally healthy volunteers from 9 ethnic groups. Carriage of polymorphic TPMT and DPYD gene markers was detected by the Real-Time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) method. Results. In all ethnic groups, the distribution of genotypes and alleles matched the equilibrium of Hardy-Weinberg. TPMT*3A (rs1800460) and TPMT*3C (rs1142345) were observed in heterozygous state in all investigated ethnic groups. In the Kabardinian group (n=204) the frequency of the TPMT*3A minor allele (MAF, %) was 2.94%; Balkars (n=200) 1.25%; Ossetians (n=239) 1.67%; Chuvashes (n=238) 1.89%: Mari (n=206) 1.21%; Tatars (n=141) 1.77%; Russians (n=134) 4.85%. The frequency of the TPMT*3C minor allele (MAF, %) in the Kabardinian group (n=204) MAF was 4.90%; Balkars (n=200) 1. 75%; Buryats (n=114) 0.44%; Ossetians (n=239) 1.88%; Chuvashes (n=238) 1.68%: Mari (n=206) 1.21%; Tatars (n=141) 1.42%; Russians (n=134) 4.48%. The results of the analysis of DPYD*2A polymorphism (rs3918290) demonstrated ethnic peculiarities of distribution. In the heterozygous state it was found only in the groups of Kabardins (n=204, MAF 1.22%), Balkars (n=200, MAF 2.00%), and Ossetians (n=239, MAF 0.63%). Conclusion. The results obtained in the study will be useful for developing personalized algorithms of antitumor therapy in cancer practice, including those aimed at increasing the safety of chemotherapy.

В статье изложены промежуточные результаты исследования средств выражения эвиденциальности и миративности в одном из тюркских языков Северного Кавказа (в карачаево-балкарском языке). В центре нашего внимания - одна из объемных языковых универсалий и ее воплощение в формах глагольных наклонений. Цель исследования - выявление и описание грамматических средств репрезентации эвиденциальных значений в исследуемом языке. Актуальность обусловлена отсутствием специальных исследований категории эвиденциальности в карачаево-балкарском языке. Категория эвиденциальности в исследуемом языке впервые описывается как языковое явление с использованием современных теоретических подходов. Основными методами являются описательный метод, метод контекстуального анализа и традиционный семасиологический подход «от формы к содержанию». В качестве источников фактического материала были использованы произведения карачаево-балкарской художественной прозы, частично фольклорные тексты и разговорная речь. Анализ практического материала позволил выделить в исследуемом языке несколько разновидностей эвиденциальных высказываний, среди которых наиболее типичными эвиденциальными значениями являются ‘очевидность / неочевидность’, ‘неожиданное обнаружение / изумление’, ‘пересказ / цитирование’. Результаты исследования могут быть использованы для создания функционального синтаксиса исследуемого языка, а также при исследовании эвиденциальности в родственных языках. The article presents the intermediate results of the study of the means of manifestation of evidentiality and mirativity in one of the Turkic languages of the North Caucasus (in the Karachay-Balkar language). We focus on one of the voluminous linguistic universals and its embodiment in the forms of verbal moods. The purpose of the study is to identify and describe the grammatical means of manifestation of evidential meanings in the studied language. The relevance is due to the lack of special studies of the category of evidentiality in the Karachay-Balkar language. The category of evidentiality in the studied language is described for the first time as a linguistic phenomenon using modern theoretical approaches. The main methods are the descriptive method, the method of contextual analysis and the traditional semasiological approach «from the form to the content». The sources of factual material were the works of Karachay-Balkar fiction, partly folklore texts and colloquial speech. The analysis of the practical material made it possible to single out several types of evidential statements in the studied language, among which the most typical evidential meanings are ‘obvious / non-obvious’, ‘unexpected discovery / amazement’, ’retelling / citation’. The study results can be used to create a functional syntax of the studied language, as well as in the study of evidentiality in related languages.

The article traces the dynamics of the development of bilingualism in the artistic prose of the North Caucasus peoples (XIX - beginning of the XXI century). The novelty of the research is due to the cultural approach to the analysis of bilingualism as an important phenomenon that reflects mental, ethnocultural and universal spiritual values.

Актуальность статьи обусловлена тем, что на сегодняшний день загадка является наименее изученным жанром в карачаево-балкарской науке о фольклоре. Как и любой другой фольклорный жанр, загадка, помимо универсальной основы, имеет и этнически маркированные черты, предопределенные факторами географического и исторического порядка. Собранный за период с 1909 г. по 2011 г. усилиями зарубежных и отечественных этнографов эмпирический материал (свыше 1500 единиц) до сих пор не подвергнут комплексному научному осмыслению. Научная новизна статьи заключается в том, что в ней впервые исследуются этнокультурно обусловленные особенности карачаево-балкарской загадки. Основная цель – с опорой на теорию Г.Д. Гачева о Космо-Психо-Логосе выявить и описать те конкретные поэтологические слагаемые, которые составляют онтологическую сущность национальной загадки. Для решения поставленной задачи в работе используются следующие методы исследования: сравнительно-исторический, системно-структурный, семиотический, а также типологизация, классификация, обобщение. Согласно полученным результатам, этнокультурная специфика рассмотренных загадок в первую очередь определяется императивом горного ландшафта, продуцирующим большое количество оронимов (гора, холм, скала) для характеристики человека и окружающих его предметов. Во вторую очередь практически все анималистические и вегетативные образы в национальных загадках отмечены знаком «эндемичности», то есть они географически привязаны к Северному Кавказу. Кроме того, значительное число загадок основано на концептуализации древних обычаев, традиций, обрядов, вследствие чего архаизмы и историзмы продолжают использоваться в речи. The relevance of this article is due to the fact that today the riddle is the least studied genre in the Karachay-Balkar science of folklore. Like any other folklore genre, the riddle, in addition to its universal basis, also has ethnically marked features, predetermined by factors of a geographical and historical order. The empirical material (over 1500 units) collected from 1909 to 2011 by the efforts of foreign and domestic ethnographers has not yet been subjected to comprehensive scientific comprehension. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that the author for the first time explores ethnoculturally determined features of the Karachay- Balkar riddle. The main goal is based on the theory of G.D. Gachev on the cosmo-psycho-logos to identify and describe those specific poetological terms that make up the ontological essence of the national riddle. To solve this problem, the following research methods are used in the work: comparative-historical, system-structural, semiotic, as well as typologization, classification and generalization. According to the results obtained, the ethnocultural specificity of the considered riddles is primarily determined by the imperative of the mountain landscape, which produces a large number of oronims (mountain, hill, rock) to characterize a person and the objects around him. Secondly, almost all animalistic and vegetative images in national riddles are marked with the sign of “endemicity”, that is, they are geographically tied to the North Caucasus. In addition, a significant number of riddles are based on the conceptualization of ancient customs, traditions, rituals, as a result of which archaisms and historicisms continue to be used in speech.

Abstract:

The article is devoted to the problems of ethnic-cultural perceptions in contemporary Karachay-Balkar poetry. It defines criteria for shaping an ethnic and civic self-identity. The paper discusses how cultural globalization affects the ideology of the Karachay-Balkar people. In a detailed analysis of works by N. Bayramkulov and A. Bakkuev, two poets of a younger generation, the author argues that fundamental values and stereotypes take priority in the poetic mentality of younger artists. Closely examining the themes of the poets’ works – philosophy, religion, history, society and politics – the author specially describes the way each poet deals with the nation’s artistic memory. Another focus is on the analysis of poetics. It is suggested that the young poets’ creative method is found at convergence of realism and mythopoeia. Their poetry centers around the mythical images of stone, water, mountains, and ‘taulu’ (‘a man of the mountains’).
