In order to extend application of the gel-degradation mechanism of delignification, model compounds of the general structure (3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-CH(OR)R$ sp prime$ were treated at room temperature with increasing charges of molecular Cl$ sb2$ in glacial HOAc.<br>Catalytic amounts of Cl$ sb2$ cleaved benzyl aryl ether bonds (OR=2-methoxy-4-methylphenoxy) before any ring chlorination occurred. Precision-cut rat liver slices were incubated with various concentrations of benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) (0-25 μM) for 24 hours. BITC decreased the dealkylation of ethoxy-(EROD) and methoxyresomfin (MROD) but increased CYP1A1/2 apoprotein levels; in vitro studies confirmed that it is mechanism-based inhibitor. BITC decreased both dealkylation of pentoxyresorufin (PROD) and CYP2B1 apoprotein levels but there was no effect on 7-benzyloxyquinoline (7-BQ) metabolism and CYP3A apoprotein levels. The solvent-free (Cp*IrCl2)2 catalyzed N-alkylation of urea with benzyl alcohol has been studied. A variety of reaction conditions were studied and optimized to produce a high yield (82%) of N,N-dibenzylurea. A series of substituted benzyl alcohols were examined at the optimal reaction conditions. However, the preparation of substituted benzyl urea derivatives using conditions optimized for benzyl alcohol gave poor yields or intractable mixtures.

An adaptive increase in neural excitability after exposure to agents that depress neuronal signaling blunts the sedative drug effects upon subsequent drug exposure. Benzyl alcohol (BA) is an aromatic alcohol, which is used as a bacteriostat in a variety of parenteral preparations. In 1982, it was implicated as the agent responsible for precipitating 'The Gasping Syndrome' in premature neonates To investigate further this toxicity, BA was administered, intraperitoneally, to adult and neonatal CD-1 male mice. Gross behavioral changes were monitored. Low doses ($<$800 mg/kg) produced minimal toxic effects within an initial 4 hour observation period.
