Abstract:
This chapter frames the transition towards clean energies as a sequential process of instrument choice and instrument change. First, regulators decide how to initiate the transition away from fossil energies. Here, support policies for renewable electricity are politically convenient because they face low resistance from fossil energies’ interest groups. In the second stage, regulators need to adapt support policies for renewables to challenges arising along the transition pathway. This theoretical two-stage framework is empirically substantiated by tracing the development of support policies in Germany. Against the backdrop of this analysis, small-step policies that could foster the energy transition process are pointed out.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses prospects for energy-society relations in the twenty-first century, with emphasis on the present challenge: to effect a sociotechnical transition to energy-society relations that are free from greenhouse gas emissions while also minimizing other environmental impacts and ensuring equitable access to energy resources. Three important drivers of this transition are explained: new political realities, new material realities, and new epistemological realities. The chapter considers how the reluctant acceptance by members of the international political elite of the inevitability and severity of the impacts of climate change has altered the politics of energy; how various energy resources exert a physical (and ecological) reality that comes into play in markets, politics, and cultures; and how the genre of energy and society research in the social sciences has evolved over the past century. An overview of the organization of this Handbook is also presented.

Abstract:
This chapter takes a look at the energy radiated by a single charge. After deriving the Larmor formulas, it studies the paradigmatic cases of the radiation of a linearly accelerated charge. Next, it turns to the synchrotron radiation of a charge in circular motion. Finally, the chapter considers the radiation of a charge accelerated by an electromagnetic wave—Thomson scattering, which is when the energy is radiated to infinity. In addition, the chapter also reveals that the hydrogen atom as described by the Rutherford model of an electron orbiting a proton is highly unstable in Maxwell theory.

Abstract:
Double ionisation of most of the experimentally accessible diatomic molecules has been studied previously by several techniques, including Auger spectroscopy, double electron transfer, kinetic energy release, and high-level theory. New double photoionisation spectra of HBr, HI, N2, CO, NO, O2, Br2, ICl, and I2 are presented here with analysis to identify the electronic states of the doubly charged ions. A simple empirical model is introduced to estimate double ionisation energies on the basis of orbital energies. For CO, NO, and O2, an indirect double ionisation mechanism is found, involving dissociation of a singly charged molecular ion followed by atomic autoionisation of one fragment. Energies of the dication states are listed with distinction between adiabatic and vertical values.

Abstract:
Early in the EU liberalization process, renewable energies needed governmental support in a market dominated by traditional sources. Support was considered an exception to prohibition of governmental promotion of indigenous national energy sources. The Climate and Energy Package changed this perspective, leading to the 2009 Directive, allowing member states to enforce support schemes promoting renewable energies. Conflicts emerged between some schemes and the rules on state aids of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. Deficient stability of support schemes must yield to a more predictable legal framework. The proposed substitute renewable energies Directive must be read in light of reinforcements of EU sustainable energies policies and 2015 Paris Agreement commitments. Renewable energies technology innovation has reduced costs and governmental support is somehow redundant. The future Directive provides rules that are compatible with competition and on the need to support generation from renewable energies in other member states.
