Full textUnemployment in the u. S. From 1973 to today is studied in its structural aspects (causes and consequences of unemployment) and its aspects related to the present economic situation (the means already used or which could be used to eradicate this economic and social plague). Why is this thesis of particular interest ? it deals with the unemployment generated by the economic recessions of the past two decades, micro recessions (1969-1970; 1979-1980) or a more serious recession (1974-75) and lastly the most serious one (1981-82), by closely linking its economic and social consequences. Moreover, the last part of this thesis offers a complete overview of the means already used, the means which would have to be reinforced and those which could be used to banish unemployment from the present and future economic scene

Full textFrom 1929 to 1934, New York appears to have been the laboratory where, in the move from private charity to public welfare, the prolegomena to the New Deal, and beyond, to the Welfare State, were set. At the epicenter of the financial crisis, New York's unemployed were growing fast to a million or more, and working or living in Manhattan, specifically, was getting difficult. Denied social protection and private resources, needy families sought help from the numerous service agencies and "scientific" charities which were supported by rich philanthropists and run by social reformers who employed professional social workers. From 1931 on, their power to act reached its limit, and they appealed to the political authorities for help. The City of New York had limited powers in the field of caring for the destitute; its role was mainly to provide advice and help to private programs, and contribute to setting up fund raising appeals. In 1931, Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt moved New York State into action with the TERA. Its aim was a massive program of job creation; material help was made possible too. The State let the City of New York build its own relief and employment programs and injected public funds as an incentive to act. During the "Hundred Days" (March 4 — June 16, 1933), President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the FERA which applied at a federal level reenacted the rules of the TERA and the New York experiment. The top New York social work leaders were involved in building a public welfare System and a labor legislation which put the common man under the protection of the Federal State

Full textThe first paper of the thesis adds to the literature on the employment drop between 2007 and 2010 in the US. I show that one reason for this drop is the fact that the level of employment was, in 2007, too high than it should, due to labor-capital substitution arisen in the housing boom. The second paper, instead, shows that adverse selection is a key determinant of banking market structure. Using data on US bank branches over 1981-2016, I find that banks are more likely to expand in counties that are similar, in terms of industry shares, to those in which they already have branches. Second, when contracting, banks are more likely to close or sell branches in similar areas. These results suggest that banks value diversification, but that informational barriers prevent them from achieving optimal scale. These findings have implications for banking competition and the rise of fintechs. Finally, the third paper examines the link between the VIX/VSTOXX and monetary policy in both the US and the euro area. From previous results of the literature, I predict that the VIX (VSTOXX) should rise with central banks tightening. I find that, while this is true until 2007, the subsequent financial crisis altered the standard transmission mechanism: the new unconventional monetary polices adopted by the Fed and the ECB don't seem to impact investors' sentiment, and the conventional ones are effective only in the Euro area. A possible explanation for these results is that interest rates in the US reached the zero lower bound much earlier than in the Euro area and that central bank asset growth (unconventional monetary policy loosening) was perceived, by market participants, as a sign that economic recovery hadn't been achieved yet

Full textSince the 1960, the unemployment increased in all the industrialised occidental countries. But at the end of 1980, no governmental program has been able to stop the unemployment crisis or to restrain if not to reduce, the number of unemployed people. Unemployment is now also an element of the society which deeply transforms the relationship between the labor force and jobs. Facing up these problems, anumber of research fields and areas of concrete actions are involved (sociology, economy, political sciences. . . , federal or local government, local communities. . . )especially by sectorial approaches. Our research wants to study the unemployment in its relations with the local space. It tries to appreciate which are the elements in the local developpment that influence the labor market, and which are those reducing, confirming or increasing unemployment. It analyses the impact of the local socio economy on the employment opportunities and the means the local actirs may use. The study in two countries (france and united states) with different institutions and mentalities allows to compare the means to fight unemployment in two cities : employment creations or help to the jobeless. So this research questions about the existence of developpment measures including this new element of socio economical life in the metropolis. The detailed survey of programs against unemployment that are existing in toulouse and atlanta offers an idea of the fields for local actors interventions. It illustrates the success of the failure of the pr

Full textThe birth of New Information Technologie (NIT) has changed the economic data, entailing a modification of the productivity. This study aims at making an economic evaluation of the impact of Information Technologies (IT). After a theoretical explanation aiming at including NIT within the economic thought, this research will analyse the major changes from a macroeconomic point of view. To do so, it relies on the American economic system, where Information Technologies are more developed. We will then develop two Computable General Equilibrium models : the first one studies the contribution of technological progress-IT to the American economic system between 1954-2000, pointing out the break in terms of technological progress-IT in 1974. The second model underlines the evolution of the employment market for unqualified workers and uses sensitivity and economic policies analysis to identify the most appropriate measures

Full textThis PhD thesis focuses on wealth inequality through the lens of two markets: the marriage market (chapter 1) and the labor market (chapters 2 and 3). In the first chapter, Normann Rion and I analyze the role of marriage and more particularly marital sorting in the formation of the wide wealth gap observed in the United States. We rely on a dynamic life cycle model where each agent chooses rationally his (her) spouse. This model predicts that a decline in the marriage rate reduces inequality while an increase in marital sorting widens the wealth gap between Americans. In the second chapter, I shift the focus from the sources to the consequences of wealth inequality in the United States. In particular, I propose a link between the low wealth of young people (aged 21 to 30) and their earnings trajectory following episodes of involuntary job loss. Indeed, the consequences of youth unemployment are sizable, which is arguably inconsistent with the predictions of existing models for the labor market. My contribution is to show that an explanation based on a career choice under borrowing constraints is plausible both theoretically and empirically. The third chapter, co-written with Cem Ozguzel, is purely empirical. We revisit the fact that young people suffer significantly from job losses, using German administrative data. The age profile of the cost of unemployment that we obtain for Germany is comparable to that documented by the literature on the United States
