AbstractMamlūk Egypt witnessed a great degree of pressure on non-Muslims, and saw the conversion of many to Islam. In 1301, riots led to the closure of numerous houses of worship of non-Muslims, an act supported by a fatwā written by Najm al-Dīn ibn al-Rifā. Ibn al-Rifā offered five arguments against maintaining dhimmī houses of worship: (1) non-Muslims seeking to preserve their houses of worship must always be considered plaintiffs, that is, that the burden of proof falls upon them; (2) The contradiction between arguments that there were no synagogues or churches prior to the building of the

Employing a historical dataset on Detroit in the 1950s, this article uses geographic models to show the political impact of churches and religious populations on presidential voting. Multilevel models separate the relative impact of individual denomination, the effect of congregants in neighborhoods, and the importance of the physical presence of a church. Existing studies of geography and religion examine a few denominations; here a full set of religious denominations is compared on support for Democratic Party voting and “social movement-like” voting for the Progressive Party. Public cult buildings from the Late Roman and Early Byzantine period have traditionally been studied from within the historiographic streams of Christianity and Judaism. The ensuing character of Antique culture follows the confessional paradigm and is characterized as Christian, Pagan and miscellaneous Other. This traditional model is criticized in light of the ease with such an approach leads to confinement, misunderstanding and mishandling of archaeological data from this historical period. This thesis proposes an alternative approach and begins with a systematic study of 173 cult sites. Sit

AbstractThis chapter explores the intersections of positive psychology, religion, and spirituality in the context of religious communities (e.g., churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples). We first argue that positive psychology provides an optimal vehicle for cultivating and demonstrating the mutual benefits of collaboration between psychology and religious communities by supporting adherents’ religiousness/spirituality, virtue development, and holistic well-being within the context of their religious community. Second, we review empirical research on how positive psychology and religion/sp

Abstract This chapter surveys sacred places in the Holy Land from pre-historic times down to the end of the Ottoman Empire. They are mostly attested either in archaeological remains or as structures which still stand today. Particular attention is paid to pre-biblical ‘Canaanite’ shrines with altars and standing stones, high places that continued into the Israelite period, synagogues from antiquity and more recently, churches throughout the centuries, including the Crusader period, and mosques.
