Abstract:
Research data collected from single respondents may raise concerns regarding common method variance (CMV), which is believed to threaten the validity of findings. The primary concern is that CMV can inflate substantive relationships, such that they appear statistically significant when they are not. Thus, understanding the nature of CMV is critical, especially when one considers the popularity—and sometimes necessity—of using self-report data. Research examining CMV has found conflicting evidence about the impact of CMV. Researchers who believe CMV influences findings have proposed solutions to combat any real or perceived potential bias, including changing survey instructions and using marker variables, but few studies have examined the efficacy of these approaches. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of these techniques and the nature of CMV using an experimental design. To conduct the experiment, multiple versions of a survey, which vary in their use of the remedial approaches, are utilized to collect data, which resulted in 1,069 usable responses. The experimental design was based on the faking literature and included instructions intended to induce or reduce the levels of CMV. Further, two different marker variables are used to determine the degree to which they create a psychological separation in substantive variables. Correlation analysis and measurement invariance are used to analyze the data. This study posits that, if CMV is a substantial concern for self-report data and these approaches are effective, then findings will differ in surveys that incorporate such approaches from surveys that do not. Results indicate few differences in experimental conditions, meaning that regardless of instructions or marker variable, substantive item correlations remained statistically similar. The results indicate this is likely due to the minimal impact of CMV, given that the proposed methods of correction did not significantly influence research findings. These findings have implications for researchers in that they do not support that CMV, or at least its proposed remedies, significantly alter findings. However, support for the null conclusions, in spite of appropriate statistical power, warrant future research examining the nature and impact of CMV.

Abstract:
Common method variance (CMV) is an important concern in international marketing research because presumed substantive relationships may actually be due to shared method variance. Because method effects may vary systematically across cultures and countries, accounting for method effects in international marketing research is particularly critical. A systematic review of Journal of International Marketing articles published during a five-year period (2015–2019, N = 93) shows that (1) authors often report post hoc CMV tests but usually conclude that CMV is not an issue and (2) many post hoc tests are conducted using the Harman one-factor test and the marker variable technique, which have serious deficiencies for detecting and controlling CMV. Drawing on a classification and comparative evaluation of the most common statistical approaches for dealing with CMV, the authors recommend two approaches and propose a procedure for dealing with CMV in international marketing research. The procedure, which is based on multisample structural equation modeling, is illustrated with data from a cross-national pan-European survey (N = 11,970, 14 countries), which shows that even though method variance is present in the data, method effects do not seriously bias the substantive conclusions in this particular study.

Abstract:
Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability of an individual to use emotions intelligently for positive outcomes. This ability is said to have an impact on many aspects of our personal and professional lives. Well-being (WB) is a persons state of mind regarding his/her life. Theory suggests that highly emotionally intelligent individuals are likely to experience psychological well-being at a higher level than individuals who are low in emotional intelligence. Based on this concept, this paper examines the empirical relation between EI and WB, both of which are attitudinal variables. A sample of 104 respondents from the manufacturing sector of South India was considered for the study and their emotional intelligence and well-being levels were assessed using appropriate tools. When two attitude-based constructs are obtained from the same respondent, using the same instrument, at the same time, then the relationship between them is said to be influenced by Common Method Variance (CMV). It is the variance that is attributable to the measurement method rather than to the constructs the measures represent and is said to introduce a spurious correlation between the variables of interest. In this study, both EI and WB were obtained from the same respondent, through a single instrument. Hence CMV was considered and acted upon. While controlling the effect of CMV on the empirical relation between EI and WB, this paper aims at the following sub-objectives: To assess the EI and WB levels of the respondents To implement procedural remedies to control CMV To implement statistical remedies to control CMV To prove that EI is a predictor of WB, over and above the effect of CMV. Procedural remedies were used with respect to questionnaire design and statistical remedies were used to partial out the effect of CMV. This paper should serve as a framework for researchers, who wish to evaluate the potential biasing effects of method variance in their research, pertaining to behavioural aspects.

Abstract:
Common method variance (CMV), a systematic measurement error, is a key source of contamination in survey research. This article examines a potential source of CMV—socially desirable responding (SDR)—in the context of Indian culture. The statistical remedies of method variance have been critically evaluated for their suitability to capture SDR. The statistical remedy of ‘controlling for the effect of a directly measured latent method factor’ using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) has been profoundly explained. The procedural guidelines on executing CFA using AMOS have been delineated to facilitate substantive research vulnerable to method variance.

Abstract:
This study demonstrated a novel procedure for assessing the significance of common method bias (CMB) using SEM. It appears that CMB has a marked effect on the reliability of the measurement models. A new procedure using covariate-based reliability was proposed for assessing the effects of CMB on the reliability of a model. Further SEM analysis using marker variable procedure supports the presence of CMB in this study. This seems to be an interesting area to be explored in further research.

Abstract:
Electric variable speed drives (VSD) have been replacing mechanic and hydraulic systems in many sectors of industry and transportation because of their better performance and reduced cost. However, the electric systems still face the issue of being considered less reliable than the mechanical ones. For this reason, researchers have been actively investigating effective ways to increase the reliability of such systems. This paper is focused on the analysis of the common-mode voltage (CMV) generated by the operation of the VSDs which directly affects to the lifetime and reliability of the complete system. The method is based on the mathematical description of the harmonic spectrum of the CMV depending on the PWM method implementation. A generalized PWM method where the carriers present a variable phase-displacement is developed. As a result of the presented analysis, the CMV reduction is achieved by applying the PWM method with optimal carrier phase-displacement angles without any external component and/or passive filtering technique. The optimal values of the carrier phase-displacement angles are obtained considering the minimization of the CMV total harmonic distortion. The resulting method is easily implementable on mostly off-the-shelf mid-range micro-controller control platforms. The strategy has been evaluated in a scaled-down experimental setup proving its good performance.

Abstract:
Switching converters are used in electric drive applications to produce variable voltage, variable frequency supply which generates harmful large dv/dt and high-frequency common mode voltages (CMV). Multilevel inverters generate lower CMV as compared to conventional two-level inverters. This paper presents simple carrier-based technique to control the common mode voltages in multilevel inverters using different structures of sine-triangle comparison method such as phase disposition (PD), phase opposition disposition (POD) by adding common mode voltage offset signal to actual reference voltage signal. This paper also presented the method to optimize the magnitude of this offset signal to reduce CMV and total harmonic distortion in inverter output voltage. The presented techniques give comparable performance as obtained in complex space vector-based control strategy, in terms of number of commutations, magnitude, and rate of change of CMV and harmonic profile of inverter output voltage. Simulation and experimental results presented confirm the effectiveness of the proposed techniques to control the common mode voltages.

Abstract:
<div class="keywords">Space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is a popular technique in the field of variable frequency induction motor drives. It gives better working and good direct current bus utilization in comparison to the sinusoidal PWM (SPWM) method. However, it decreases harmonic fluctuations and generates high common mode voltage (CMV) fluctuations, which results in common mode currents inside the motor. Hence, the performance of the motor may be deteriorated. To reduce the CMV, this paper presents a family of active zero state PWM (AZSPWM) methods using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy interference system (ANFIS). The proposed approach uses a five-layer hybrid learning algorithm for training the network. The training data is obtained from the classical SVPWM method. To analyze the proposed PWM methods, simulation is carried out using MATLAB and evaluated.</div>

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of organizational justice on work engagement and the mediating effect of employees’ self-leadership on this relationship within the Korean organizational context. Design/methodology/approach – Cross-sectional, self-report data on organizational justice, work engagement, and self-leadership were obtained from 237 employees in Korea. Structural equation modeling was mainly used for data analyses. Findings – The results revealed the direct significant effect of organizational justice on both self-leadership and work engagement. Also, self-leadership was found to have a significant effect on work engagement as well as a partial mediating effect on the relationship between organizational justice and employees’ work engagement. Research limitations/implications – The social relations and personal behavioral components were conjointly analyzed to measure organizational justice. Harman’s single factor test and unmeasured latent variable tests were performed to minimize the chance of the common method variance (CMV) issue, additional suggestion was provided to prevent CMV issue for future research. Practical implications – These results could be used for designing an organizational system and structure based on the interactive relations between social structure and behaviors to improve organizational performance. Originality/value – The research, which has conceptualized the interactions between social relations and individual behaviors to measure the organizational justice level, is rare.
