Abstract:
The methods of transmitting information may be divided as follows: direct; and, indirect. The âdirectâ method occurs when a creature transmits a signal that other creatures in its local environment can receive. Word of mouth advertising is a form of direct communication. âIndirectâ communication relays a message through the environment. This type of communication is known as stigmergy. Both word of mouth communication and stigmergy require the existence of groups of communicators. It is, however, difficult to analyse a very large number of local interactions that occur in group behaviour. A global phenomenon known as âemergenceâ arises from such behaviour. The phrase ââthe whole is greater than the sum of its partsâ normally describes emergence. In this research, we investigate how the two methods of communicating, direct and indirect (including a combination of these), result in emergent behaviour. In order to establish this outcome we employed the use of agent-based software in which we designed groups of agents to evolve over generations in response to specific situations. The manner in which these agent groups evolve is by a genetic algorithm. This is based on the consumption and collection of resources from the environment - a metric for gauging how well the population performs as a whole. For the purpose of this dissertation, we measure and examine the performance of four styles of the two methods of communication: No Communication, Word of Mouth, Stigmergic and Both (a combination of direct and indirect). We observe the fitness arising through successive generations of agents for each of the four styles and compare the results. The âNo Communicationâ style is markedly the worst performer and is âthe sum of the partsâ in terms of the definition of emergence. The âWord of Mouthâ style is marginally below the best performer but is rated well above that of âNo Communicationâ. The âStigmergicâ style is only the third best performer. Combining the direct and indirect methods yields the best result for the âBothâ style. All the communicating categories, considered âthe wholeâ in terms of the definition for emergence, outperform the âNo Communicationâ style. This demonstrates that emergence occurs when using these communication methods in groups. Keywords: Communication, Emergence, Genetic Algorithms, Group Behaviour

Abstract:
<p>The international company used in this study has their head quarters located in Sweden. This is a ‘born global’ company which means that they are not bound to a home market; instead they use the world as their market. It does not mean they passed over their home market and went global directly, but their main market was not their home market.</p><p>The company is international, present on four continents (Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America), which means it has many different cultures within the organisation to consider. This has also affected how people communicate and understand each other in the organisation.</p><p>The purpose of this thesis is to gain an understanding of how an international company shares and communicate information within their organisation in order to see how the daily communication works. For example the primary data was gathered through phone interviews. 27 interviews were performed with subsidiaries including headquarters from 21 countries. The interviewees had different positions, such as CEO’s, sales assistants, IT-technicians etc.</p><p>The results of the interviews showed different opinions on how the communication within the company functions. These views has been analysed further in order to see what kind of underlying factors that affected their opinions. What was found was a lack of knowledge in English from several of the subsidiaries. It was also found that the company has some underlying behaviours that affect how they communicate and share information. This to some extent could be related to the workload in the company. Another issue raised was that some had difficulties using the organisational software Guda. Therefore, more training could be necessary for the employees that have problems with the software. This issue is closely related to the fact that the IT-department has too much work to do. It can therefore be suggested that if the employees got more training in the company’s software, the IT-department would have less work to do and can focus more on maintenance. More issues and solutions have been discussed in detail in chapters four and five. There are also implications for managers in chapter six, which deals with some of the main issues discussed in chapter four and five.</p>

Abstract:
Aim Companies around the world are making sizeable investments into CSR initiatives, but ensuring appropriate returns on these investments remains challenging. Therefore, it is of value to study the communication of corporate CSR efforts. The purpose of this study is to investigate how consumers react to rational versus emotional message strategies in CSR communication. Two categories of consumer reactions were considered: trust and purchase intention. Methods Qualitative research with four focus groups was conducted. Participants discussed three texts regarding a CSR project, utilising a rational, emotional and a hybrid rational-emotional message strategy respectively. The conversations focused on trust towards the communication and purchase intention. Results Trust - All of the respondents viewed the rational text over the emotional text as more trustworthy, but they most positively reacted to the combined strategy. Rational information was viewed as more reliable by many participants, with emotional cues adding value by better holding their attention. Purchase intention – Participants more positively reacted to the rational CSR communication strategy, compared to an emotional strategy. For approximately half of respondents, the hybrid strategy targeting both rational and emotional cues was the most successful in terms of purchase intention. Upon further analysis, it was identified that this division in respondents’ opinions may reflect a gender difference, where men portrayed the more task oriented and women the socially sensitive consumers. Conclusions The findings support previous research championing the use of rational strategies over emotional strategies in CSR communication. A number of managerial implications that can be used by companies in order to better communicate their CSR activities and increase returns on CSR-related investments are provided.

Abstract:
Cognitive processing requires to flexibly combine information from functionally specialized neural processes that are widely distributed throughout the brain. Neuroimaging studies have consistently reported that functional network configurations are governed by two fundamental principles of brain organization: functional segregation and integration. Yet, the mechanisms underlying the dynamic network reorganization are not well understood. In this work, we present evidence for two mechanisms through which the dynamic system-level integration is modulated. On the one hand, the large-scale brain organization is mediated by transient changes in phase-synchronization, facilitating global information flow between distant cortical areas as proposed by the "Communication Through Coherence" (CTC) theory. And in the other, it is mediated by the ascending neuromodulatory system.

<p>The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is intended by the Telco industry, to make it easy for third-party application developers to create new, innovative services that will help to offset the fall in revenue of regular voice services. However, a slow roll out of the system is increasing the chance of a disruptive technology to fill some of the space that IMS hopes to cover. This thesis presents a hands on example of the implementation of such a new innovative service. XMPP has been used as an alternative platform to launch the service, and is thoroughly compared to the IMS in this master's thesis. Ironically the service could not be launched on IMS due to technical problems. Results suggest that XMPP could replace IMS as a service platform, thus disrupting the business model of IMS.</p>

Nahas, Mousaab. "Investigation of different techniques to upgrade legacy WDM communication systems." Thesis, Aston University, 2006. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/15361/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents experimental investigation of different effects/techniques that can be used to upgrade legacy WDM communication systems. The main issue in upgrading legacy systems is that the fundamental setup, including components settings such as EDFA gains, does not need to be altered thus the improvement must be carried out at the network terminal. A general introduction to optical fibre communications is given at the beginning, including optical communication components and system impairments. Experimental techniques for performing laboratory optical transmission experiments are presented before the experimental work of this thesis. These techniques include optical transmitter and receiver designs as well as the design and operation of the recirculating loop. The main experimental work includes three different studies. The first study involves a development of line monitoring equipment that can be reliably used to monitor the performance of optically amplified long-haul undersea systems. This equipment can provide instant finding of the fault locations along the legacy communication link which in tum enables rapid repair execution to be performed hence upgrading the legacy system. The second study investigates the effect of changing the number of transmitted 1s and Os on the performance of WDM system. This effect can, in reality, be seen in some coding systems, e.g. forward-error correction (FEC) technique, where the proportion of the 1s and Os are changed at the transmitter by adding extra bits to the original bit sequence. The final study presents transmission results after all-optical format conversion from NRZ to CSRZ and from RZ to CSRZ using semiconductor optical amplifier in nonlinear optical loop mirror (SOA-NOLM). This study is mainly based on the fact that the use of all-optical processing, including format conversion, has become attractive for the future data networks that are proposed to be all-optical. The feasibility of the SOA-NOLM device for converting single and WDM signals is described. The optical conversion bandwidth and its limitations for WDM conversion are also investigated. All studies of this thesis employ 10Gbit/s single or WDM signals being transmitted over dispersion managed fibre span in the recirculating loop. The fibre span is composed of single-mode fibres (SMF) whose losses and dispersion are compensated using erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) and dispersion compensating fibres (DCFs), respectively. Different configurations of the fibre span are presented in different parts.

Abstract:
Online dating is a popular phenomenon in the world. Since the main motivation for individuals to use online dating services is finding a partner, the communication strategies for the users to develop a relationship via online dating services and the different communication practices between online and offline dating are thought-provoking. This research aims to answer two research questions: what the communication strategies for online daters of Soul are and what the differences between online and offline dating for users of Soul, including communication practices are. These two research questions aim to increase the possibility of having a successful online dating and provide a deep insight into online dating. Based on the theoretical frameworks of uncertainty reduction theory, social information processing theory, and the hyperpersonal communication, this research interviewed 11 Chinese online daters in the application, Soul and observed their online activities. As a result, this research finds that when encounter with the potential partners, individuals will actively seek information to reduce their uncertainty. The most effective way is interrogation while the most common way is observing personal account. During the information-seeking process, the similarities including interests and hobbies are important. Self-presentation strategies contain the planning strategy, editing strategy, and the strategy of adaptation to the characteristics of the partner. Besides information seeking strategies and self-presentation strategies, individuals also use the long-term arrangement strategy. The differences between online and offline dating contain three aspects: communication practices of information processing (including information processing, communication patterns as well as communication attitudes), the imagined others through online dating communication and different social norms.

Abstract:
Disability is a state which questions one’s social standing. Individuals with disability are often seen shunned and sheltered from the society. It is understood that one cannot expect the world to revolve around us, rather we make adjustments to make life smoother. This thesis looks at non-verbal communication strategies within one case study who suffers from Cerebral Palsy and multiple communication needs. The major share of the thesis looks at the multimodal communication where the communication and bodily gestures gain prominence.   Cerebral Palsy, in an overview, (CP) is a group of permanent neurological disorder that affects one’s body movement and muscle coordination, commonly seen in an infant stage or early childhood caused by the damage to the brain that hinders the brain’s ability to control movement and posture of the body. CP affects the outer layer of the brain that directs the muscle movements. Alongside a stationary characteristic, a lot of motor, sensory and intellectual impairments accompany the disorder. These characteristics mark the beginning of life for the CP injured and is seen affecting their physical, mental and social existence, limiting their abilities of motor and oral skills impairing the ability of speech. Physique alterations include changes in jaw structure, lips and tongue making it nearly impossible in articulating words (Geytenbeek, 2011). Communication is an integral part of any relation. Feelings and emotions are often conveyed through communicating it in two different ways- verbal (psycholinguistics) - that involves a lot of ideas, messages conveyed through words and speech for communication and non-verbal (psychobiological) - involves facial and bodily expressions. My prime target is the latter’s way of communication, how these non- verbal communication can be interpreted, how do the family members and personal assistants decipher the expressions and understand subtle nuances. The complexity of communication within this group is further intensified by the power structures and decision makers in the society. It also tries to look at different models of communication and the strategies to make communication effective among the disabled group. Communication is very mutable and through this dissertation I try to analyze techniques that gives visibility to varied experiences and turning them into representations of certain ideas. Also it tries to unravel the emerging problems within the communication arena, misinterpretations thus reaching a conclusive hypothesis that communication is constantly irregular and fluctuating according to distinctive time, person and space.

Abstract:
This study was done in order to research how companies’ usage of Social Media differ depending on which country they operate in. Little prior research had been done on whether companies in different countries use Social Media differently. This study was a first attempt to identify nuances in the field of country-specific characteristics in companies’ Social Media usage. 21 interviews with seven Social Media practitioners on the US, Japanese and German market were conducted. The findings showed that there are differences between how companies’ communicate, interact and measure Social Media. In conclusion, on the US market, companies that are successful in Social Media put emphasis on asking questions and listening to their consumers’ answers. On the Japanese market, companies that perform well drive interaction through sales promotion, and successful German companies tailor their communication to ultimately generate loyalty.

Abstract:
Image/Video compression has great significance in the communication of motion pictures and still images. The need for compression has resulted in the development of various techniques including transform coding, vector quantization and neural networks. this thesis neural network based methods are investigated to achieve good compression ratios while maintaining the image quality. Parts of this investigation include motion detection, and weight retraining. An adaptive technique is employed to improve the video frame quality for a given compression ratio by frequently updating the weights obtained from training. More specifically, weight retraining is performed only when the error exceeds a given threshold value. Image quality is measured objectively, using the peak signal-to-noise ratio versus performance measure. Results show the improved performance of the proposed architecture compared to existing approaches. The proposed method is implemented in MATLAB and the results obtained such as compression ratio versus signalto- noise ratio are presented.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how the relationship between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities has been shaped by the way the media and related structures mediate their communication. This is a multi-method study based on data gathered from interview, print, broadcast and online material offering a new synthesis and analysis of the mediation of a century of turbulent bicommunal relations. The thesis begins by developing a theoretical framework to address these questions of mediation and offers a critical review of the historiography of bicommunal relations on the island. Three core empirical chapters follow. The first aims to understand the role of faceto- face communication in bicommunal relations based on interviews with both Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The second focuses on the representation of the Turkish-Cypriot community in the Greek-Cypriot print and broadcast media based on textual and discourse analyses of both extraordinary events and mundane coverage. This empirical study identifies the shifts of the hegemonic discourses in the Greek-Cypriot public sphere and the media rituals that are/were enacted in order for the discourses to be legitimised. Finally, the third chapter analyses samples of online bicommunal communication before and after the easing of ‘border' restrictions in 2003. It highlights the ways the new media can be used to move beyond those media rituals that confirm certain myths and to reenhance the normalisation of bicommunal coexistence. Overall, the thesis's findings suggest that the Greek-Cypriot print and broadcast media's symbolic power increased in certain historical periods of conflict and that through this power they territorialised people's reality and the process of assigning meanings to the other. It should be noted though, that this territorialisation is not homogenous, it is rather a product of conflict among local discourses. Finally, putting together the findings deriving from all three empirical studies leads to the suggestion that new media tools help/ed overcome a territorialisation process and in a sense recapture the dynamics of oral everydayness of the common past of the two Cypriot communities.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Public Relations Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2010<br>Main objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate the dual perceptions of a selected group of public relations practitioners and journalists, who interact at Media24 (the print media business section of Naspers, a leading multinational media group) in CapeTown. These perceptions, by public relations practitioners and journalists, are of self and each other's professional objectives, skills and ability, function, and their relationships. The research aims to determine whether it is possible, through perception definition of each category from two points of view (perception of self and perception of other), to find sufficient common grounds first to understand and then to optimise the relationship between public relations practitioners and journalists. Research design and methodology An accidental quota, non-random sample of 15 (fifteen) journalists and 15 (fifteen) public relations practitioners was selected based on their interaction at Media24 in CapeTown. A single self administered questionnaire distributed to the combined sample group was used to gather data. The results obtained from the questionnaire were analysed in three parts; a) the combined group of journalists and public relations practitioners; b) public relations practitioners only and c) journalists only. Analysis, conclusions and recommendations included a comparison of the differences and similarities between the two groups. Keyfindings Keyfindings include: The majority of public relations practitioners interacting with Media24 on a corporate communication level do not belong to a professional body. The majority of public relations practitioners interacting with Media24 on a corporate communication level lacked clarity in defining their own professional objectives and functional role. The self-perception of the majority of public relations practitioners interacting with Media 24 on a corporate communication level was less positive than the perceptions of the journalists of public relations practitioners.

Brunner, Steven R. "Attachment, Self-disclosure, and New Technologies: Investigating the Connection between Attachment and Self-Disclosure Across Different Communication Technologies." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/566995.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the connection between attachment and self-disclosure behavior across communication technologies. Very little research has explored the connection between attachment and self-disclosure, and no studies have examined the relationship in the context of communication technologies. Drawing on attachment theory, self-disclosure literature, and communication technology research, this dissertation predicted that individuals with high anxious or high avoidance attachment would capitalize on the affordances of communication technologies and be associated with more self-disclosure behavior. Two studies were completed to test these hypotheses. Study one (n = 479) was a cross-sectional survey using participants recruited from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. Study two (n = 309) was an experiment where participants had their attachment system activated by experiencing a threatening situation hypothetically. Both studies had participants report self-disclosure behavior with their romantic partner in frequency and degree of intimacy. Each participant was randomly assigned one communication channel to report on (e.g., face-to-face, text messaging, email, or social networking sites). The results from the two studies provided mixed results for attachment and self-disclosure behavior across communication technologies. In general, anxious attachment was positively associated with self-disclosure frequency and degree of intimacy regardless of which channel was used, which was expected. Avoidance attachment was negatively associated with self-disclosure frequency, but only when the participant was experiencing a threatening situation. Neither attachment style interacted with the number of cues perceived to be available in a communication channel in the proposed direction when predicting self-disclosure behavior. However, both attachment dimensions interacted with a channel’s perceived expectation for response when predicting self-disclosure intimacy. When participants were not experiencing a threat to their security, those with high anxious or high avoidance attachment reported self-disclosing more intimately in channels perceived to have less expectation for response. Together these findings suggest individuals with high anxious attachment may use self-disclosure as a hyperactivating strategy to connect with an attachment figure. Individuals with high avoidance attachment choose not to self-disclose as a deactivating strategy that prevents intimacy from forming. Additionally, individuals with high anxious or high avoidance attachment can capitalize on a channel’s expectation for response and feel comfortable self-disclosing something intimate in a channel perceived to have a low expectation for response.

Scott, Sarah Jane. "Comparing Speech Movements in Different Types of Noise." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4226.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the impact of several noise conditions on speech articulator movements during a sentence repetition task. Sixty participants in three age groups ranging from 20 to 70 repeated a sentence under five noise conditions. Lower lip movements during production of a target sentence were used to compute the spatiotemporal index (STI). It was hypothesized that STI would be lower (indicating greater stability) in the silent baseline condition. There were changes in speech production under several of the noise conditions. The duration for the 1-talker condition was significantly shorter when compared to the silent condition, which could be due to the impact of the 1-talker noise on the attention of the speaker. The peak velocity of a selected closing gesture increased in all of the noise conditions compared to silence. It could be speculated that the repetitive and predictable nature of the speaking task allowed participants to easily filter out the noise while automatically increasing the velocity of lip movements, and consequently, the rate of speech. The STI in the pink noise and 6-talker conditions was lower than in the silent condition, which may be interpreted to reflect a steadier manner of speech production. This could be due to the fact that in the 6-speaker noise condition, the overall effect was more similar to continuous noise, and thus potentially less distracting than hearing a single speaker talking. The count of velocity peaks was unexpectedly lower in the noise conditions compared to speech in silence, suggesting a smoother pattern of articulator movement. The repetitiveness of the task may not require a high level of self-monitoring, resulting in speech output that was more automatic in the noise conditions. With the presentation of noise during a speaking task, the intensity increased due to the Lombard effect in all of the noise conditions. People communicate in noisy environments every day, and an increased understanding of the effects of noise on speech would have value from both theoretical and clinical perspectives.

Abstract:
<p> Wireless channels have significant problems like multipath fading, delay spread, frequency selective fading. Guard bands/channel equalization techniques are employed to overcome these. However, these solutions are complex and don&rsquo;t solve the issue of bandwidth scarcity. Thus, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing was introduced; a special case of Frequency Division Multiplexing where orthogonal subcarriers overlap in the frequency domain using lesser bandwidth without any inter-symbol interference. </p><p> The next challenge is to reduce the error rate in transmission. This thesis focuses on the noise created because of the non-linear input/output relationship of the power amplifier used. Different techniques used to linearize power amplifiers are compared. Predistortion was found to be most effective. Various predistortion schemes are compared and error rate performance evaluated for the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing system with and without Predistortion as well as for different modulation techniques. Dynamic Digital Predistortion paired with 8 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation was found to work most efficiently.</p><p>

Writing about children's views is integral to EP work. Any written account of children's views is one of many possible interpretations, each of which may have a different impact. The choices EPs make about their writing may be informed by ethical, political and therapeutic considerations as well as the differing agendas of the readership. However, making a decision about how to represent children's views is problematic; EPs themselves report dilemmas and have been criticised for writing in ways that are disempowering for children. There is very little research on this aspect of EP practice. The aim of this thesis is to explore EPs' rationales for writing about children's views and how these link with their practice. I used discourse analysis to examine the representation of children's views. This involved focusing on the social functions of written communication rather than assuming that writing was a medium of communication. I considered both EP rationales about how they represented children's views and examples of EP writing. My data came from published work by EPs and from a focus group of my colleagues. I analysed papers on EP writing that contained an example of EP writing and an accompanying rationale. The focus group was asked to reflect on their practice in writing about children's views and to provide examples of their own writing. I looked for patterns in the arguments for different types of writing about children's views (known "as interpretative repertoires) and compared these with the styles in the examples of actual EP writing. I found that repertoires formed a hierarchical structure. There were two main repertoires used by the EPs: 'writing as a record', where writing is considered to be neutral; and 'writing as an event', where writing is understood to be one account of many and tailored to anticipate its impact on readers. These were subdivided into further repertoires, which I termed 'strands'. EPs used different repertoires in different situations rather than applying a consistent framework. I identified 'winning' arguments which seemed to mediate shifts between repertoires, but privileged one repertoire rather than resolving the differences in assumptions. EPs could use my analysis to reflect on their practice by comparing their own use of repertoires with those used by the EPs in this study, and challenging the assumptions which underpin the way they represent children's views. Potentially, further research on EP use of 'winning' arguments may reveal tacit rules which determine how children's views are represented. My analysis also suggests the need for a coherent theoretical framework to inform practice, as justifications which rely on using different assumptions on different occasions are vulnerable to criticism.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a scheme of obtaining an estimate of channel coefficients and noise power spectral density (PSD) using iterative expectation maximization based on a turbo-coded code-division multiple-access (CDMA) receiver under different communication scenarios such as time-varying interference and pulse-band jamming. At the receiver, an initial estimate is obtained with the aid of pilot symbols. The subsequent values of channel coefficient and noise PSD are updated by soft feedback from the turbo decoder. The updated channel coefficient and noise PSD are iteratively passed to the turbo decoder, which results in improved decoding accuracy. The proposed systems are verified through simulations using a structure similar to the Third Generation Partnership Project Long-Term Evolution (3GPP LTE) system under Jakes and Rayleigh fading environments. In addition, this thesis also proposes the scheme of obtaining an estimate of channel coefficients and noise PSD without sending any pilots under a single-user environment. At the receiver, the initial estimate of channel coefficient and noise PSD are obtained without pilots using blind estimation, and then the further estimations are done using expectation maximization. The estimated values are updated iteratively by feedback from the turbo decoder. The updated channel coefficient and noise PSD are iteratively passed to the turbo decoder, which yields improved decoding results. The elimination of pilot symbols sacrifices performance but allows increased energy per transmitted symbol, increased information throughput, or the inclusion of additional parity bits.<br>Thesis (M.S) - Wichita State University, College of Engineering, Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Abstract:
As the web browser becomes an increasingly powerful tool for the average web user, with more features and capabilities being developed constantly, the necessity to determine which features perform better than others in the same area becomes more important. This thesis investigates the performance of three separate technologies used to achieve full-duplex real time communication over the web: short polling using Ajax, server-sent events and the WebSocket protocol. An experiment was conducted measuring the performance over three custom-built web applications (one per technology being tested), comparing latency and number of HTTP requests over 100 messages being sent through the application. Additionally, the latency measurements were made over three separate network conditions. The experiment results suggest the WebSocket protocol outperforms both short polling using Ajax and server-sent events by large margins, varying slightly depending on network conditions.

Abstract:
On February 14, 2007, JetBlue Airways experienced a major blow to their well-respected reputation when ten planes were delayed with passengers stranded on board for up to eight hours each. Through intense coverage and negative reporting from the media, JetBlue launched a multi-pronged crisis communication response strategy to repair the damage. Using Situational Crisis Communications Theory (SCCT) as a framework, the research in this study demonstrated the importance of crisis communications planning, corporate apologia, corporate impression management, and image restoration within an organization. A discourse analysis was utilized to identify the types of messages delivered by the media, the crisis response strategies and tactics implemented by JetBlue, and stakeholder reactions to the JetBlue responses. Content from the messages were then placed in appropriate categories identifying the type of strategy and tactic utilized. Category definitions, examples of comments, and the identifying attributes were included to help support that JetBlue was successful in repairing and recovering their reputation.<br>M.A.<br>Masters<br>Communication<br>Sciences<br>Communication; Mass Communication

Abstract:
Brand crisis could threaten a company with declining public trust and decreased brand reputation (Greyser, 2009). When confronting with a crisis, the organization should respond immediately and properly so that the crisis can be stopped from escalate into a catastrophe (Davies and Walters, 1998). Crisis type can be divided into the victim, the accident or the intentional clusters according to perceived responsibilities the company should shoulder. Based on these factors, the company should select the most appropriate response strategy or a combination of different response strategies to address the crisis situation. In other words, a match between crisis type and response strategy is effective for companies to survive crisis situations (Cheong and Morrison, 2008). Food-related crisis tend to become rampant in recent years and require more in-depth studies. In the face of a food-related crisis, the affected company are compelled to communicate with both internal and external stakeholders, including employees, stockholders, retailers, suppliers and consumers to manage and survive the crisis (Massey, 2001). There are four options for companies in a product-harm crisis to choose from: denying the defect, involuntary recall, voluntary recall and improvement campaign (Souiden and Pons, 2009). This study took the issue of Blue Bell ice cream recalls as an example of product-harm crisis for case analysis and proposed three different kinds of strategies or hypotheses based on the Image Repair Theory (Benoit and Pang, 2008) covering the denial, evasion of responsibility, reducing offensiveness of events, corrective action and mortification aspects.

Chen, Bing. "A communication platform to facilitate knowledge transfer between different stakeholder groups in sustainable student accommodation design." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2009. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6131/.

Full text
Abstract:
It is widely acknowledged that sustainability principles should be addressed in the housing market to tackle climate change. In this research, particular attention is paid to latent issues (people's knowledge, motives and values) related to energy saving and carbon reductions in the operational phase of house occupation. In this research, design process is described as a transfer between areas of knowledge bearing on a particular project, aiming for consensus of problem solving. Hence better results can be expected if a close consensus on the alternative options could be achieved between different stakeholder groups. However, stakeholders from different groups often have different systems for value judgement in reality and it is difficult to get the message across in the design decision-making process. To provide a deep insight into the given phenomena, this research explores priority variances between four key stakeholder groups in terms of student accommodation design: designers, clients, occupants and legislators. A multi-strategy research framework is designed for the collection and analysis of data. In this hierarchical context, consultation responses from different stakeholder groups are compared against an agreed set of issues (drawn from EcoHomes). Among these four key stakeholder groups, particular attention is paid to the Occupant Group as its members, student residents (both future housing designers and current housing occupants), are supposed to be better educated on sustainability issues and have a positive effect, through changes in their attitudes, social values and inspirations (willingness to change their lifestyles towards greater environmental sensitivity), over the vast campaigns of education, debate and public participation. It is found that current architectural education frequently overlooks that adapting to climate change could involve carbon-intensive actions - though architectural students have had a general awareness of sustainability principles, it has so far made limited impact on their design protocols or lifestyle choices. Other important findings, such as the interrelationship between education and its effect on student residents' environmental awareness and social desirability, can be fed back into the socio-technical research model (e. g. Bayesian Belief Network model) or used to inform current sustainability-related education. The significant priority variances between different stakeholder groups are also specified. It is concluded that a complete consensus across all stakeholders is unlikely to be achieved in the near future. To achieve better design results, therefore, a communication platform is proposed to facilitate knowledge transfer. Two approaches are addressed to introduce the principle of trans-disciplinary communication: a common language and a broader collaborative decision- making process. Furthermore, by criticising the weighting exercise underpinned BRE's EcoHomes, a Code for Sustainable Student Accommodation (CSSA) is proposed. Rather than achieving a broad consensus, it represents opinions from all levels of decision-makers and acknowledges the priority variances within and between them. As an exploratory case study, the weighting method of CSSA needs to be further verified and developed in the future for legitimate purpose. All research findings are explored and interpreted to the degree of an architect's knowledge level, which reflects the researcher's personal values.

Abstract:
With the fast development of today’s multimedia services, engineers face a huge hurdle that is, the overwhelming need of highly reliable communication over long distances. Cooperative communication is a novel concept which tackles this problem effectively. The direct link is assisted by nodes called relays, which also reduce shadowing and pathloss effects in wireless networks. An added advantage of such a cooperative communication network is that when combined with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems and cognitive radio networks (CRN), the system performance in terms of spectral efficiency and reliability, can be extremely enhanced without any extra power and spectrum. The concept of cooperative communications in MIMO and CRN systems has gained immense interest in the literature. Most of the research works have assumed Rayleigh fading conditions. In this thesis, the performance of cooperative communications with practical constraints of shadowing is studied. Analytical expressions for the outage probability of cooperative networks under different relaying protocols with selection combining are presented under the assumption of κ − µ shadowing fading. Specifically, the relaying protocols that are investigated are incremental relaying, opportunistic relaying, adaptive amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward. Furthermore, this system model is simulated and the simulation results are compared with the analytical results. Mathematica, a technical computing tool, is used for numerical estimations using stochastic processes and probability theory. Simulation is done in MATLAB.In this thesis, along with the analytical framework for evaluating outage probability for the system is presented. Simulations are performed for various fading parameters and the results closely match with analytical results which validate the derivations.

Abstract:
This qualitative study is constructive in its nature and it aims to find how remote workers perceive usability of communication features across different tools and platforms. Answering two main research questions; How do remote users perceive usability of communication features across different communication tools and platforms? and How, according to users, that features can be improved?, this research aims to link them with scholarly literature, find potential knowledge gaps and highlight improvement areas. Learnability, efficiency, universality and general satisfaction are researched within five participants, coming from different sectors and occupations. Usability in IS context connects ICT with HCI. Trends, challenges and solutions in remote work field lead us to different practices in work and knowledge sharing. Thematic analysis brings seven main themes that show satisfactory results in general. However, dissatisfaction is addressed to efficiency and universality with functionality of communication tools and platforms which falls within ICT, and learnability within its human component, HCI. Furthermore, three step solution is proposed: organizational readiness, standards in communication practice and soft skills. Contributions of this research confirm importance of human component that defines usability in remote field. General usability and satisfaction with ICT and its components is confirmed and improvement areas are addressed within HCI. This research serves as a good base for research of usability of same communication features across different channels however, comparing on-site and remote workers within specific fields.

Abstract:
This thesis has two distinct research threads. One thread examines the effectiveness of technology support on the performance of focus groups. Unlike previous research, the work described in this thesis addresses the fundamental issue that groups are social systems, and that comprehensive measurement of the effectiveness of group activities requires assessment of both the task-oriented and social aspects of the group activity. In this research, four different communication modes are used to compare group effectiveness. The second research thread in this thesis is the use of Systems Thinking, and specifically Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), as the framework for inquiring into the effects of technology support on group effectiveness. The strategy in this thesis for developing and evaluating hypotheses extends the general descriptions and guidance in the literature on using SSM for hypothesis testing. Systems thinking also provides the basis for examining the prevailing ???profile deviation??? view that the better the fit between the group task and the technology support the greater the group performance. Using the six perspectives of fit developed by Venkatraman (1989), the most common GSS models and other models developed to examine Task-Technology Fit (TTF) are analysed. The results show that group performance models are most often tested from a ???profile deviation??? perspective and TTF models developed from a profile deviation perspective claim to have predictive and descriptive validity for assessing the level of group performance. To assess whether an SSM based approach can improve the predictive and/or descriptive analysis of the impact of technology support on group work, a field experiment was conducted at the Australian Defence Force Academy. Twenty focus groups of officer cadets assessed their military training program using a GSS in one of four communication modes. The results showed little predictive or descriptive support for the profile deviation perspective of TTF when measuring the group???s overall effectiveness, task effectiveness, participant satisfaction or group relations. The alternative ???gestalt??? perspective, operationalised in this research by using SSM, provided a more comprehensive approach to examining the effectiveness of technology support for group work.

Abstract:
Chatbots are becoming more common in modern society, but there are almost no studies that explore both the differences and causes that divides human communication from communication with a chatbot. The aim of this thesis was to explore different recipient design people take when communicating with a human and a chatbot. A chatbot was built and an experiment was conducted that measured the performance and experience of the participants. A thematic analysis then found out causes for these experiences. The study focused on finding new differences in addition to exploring people’s boredom, frustration, understanding, repetition, and performance in a task. The study found differences and causes in people’s recipient design when communicating with a human compared to a chatbot, as well as differences in the performance of a task. Hopefully, this will help future research figure out solutions for the differences found.

Abstract:
This study explored assumptions about communication styles used by nationals of countries that share what is perceived as a common native language. Participants were from Argentina, Chile, and Paraguay, and the common native language was Spanish. Data were gathered before and after their attendance at a five-day training event with attendees from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Paraguay via surv'ey questionnaires (pre) and interview questionnaires (post). The data were analyzed for participants' assumptions about communication styles and whether these were confirmed or challenged by intercultural interaction. They were also analyzed for ways in which the perception of a shared native language could influence assumptions and interactions. The results revealed four primary communication styles involved in participants' assumptions: 1) Harmony versus Assertiveness, 2) Accessibility versus Exclusiveness, 3) Vocabulary, and 4) Intercultural Conflict Styles, among other insights related to the study questions.

Abstract:
Research in both first and second language reading has shown that awareness of text structure, or rhetorical organisation is related to superior recall of main ideas from expository prose passages. The present study investigates awareness of scientific text structure among tertiary students from different language backgrounds. In this investigation, four reading passages containing two rhetorical text structures found in scientific discourse, comparison/contrast and problem/solution are employed. Meyer’s (1975) hierarchical content structure analysis was used to analyse the texts into top, high, mid and low level ideas corresponding to main and supporting ideas. The research questions were centred around three major areas: 1. Whether subjects from different language backgrounds displayed differences in quantity of idea units and main ideas recalled 2. Whether difference were related to subjects’ awareness of text structure as measured in use of the structure of the original passage in their written recalls 3. Whether the different rhetorical structures produced any significant overall differences in quantity and level (main vs supporting) of ideas recalled by subjects. Forty five first year university students aged between 18 and 20 studying science participated in the study, with fifteen students in each of the following groups: Australian, Singapore and Malaysian.

Title: Nätdejting för olika åldrar (Netdating for different ages)Author: Henri NekmouchePurpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate what influence the medium Internethas had on building up relationships between people who have dated online, and tocompare two different age groups.Method/Material: In this study the author has conducted personal interviews with sixpeople who all have experienced Internet dating, and had their first contact with agirlfriend/boyfriend online. The questions asked were designed to help answering thepurpose of the study.Main results: This study shows that in general there is a positive view of Internet datingamong both groups. They appreciate the opportunities it provides, as they get to knowthe other persons personality first. Even so, it should be noted that they still tend to be abit ashamed to talk about Internet dating, and some don’t want to be associated with it.The communication pattern tend to be pretty much the same among both groups. Thereare differences between the two age groups in terms of the way of dating online – theuse of pictures, sites and programs differs, and the reasons for this are many. Two of thebiggest reasons can be related to the question whether the person grew up with theInternet or not; and also to the fact that older people tend to be more serious when theyuse online dating because their time is runing out.Number of pages: 44Course: Media and Communication studies CUniversity: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science,Uppsala UniversityPeriod: Fall 2009Tutor: Amelie HössjerKeywords: Internet dating, communication, chat, communities, different age group
