Abstract:
A web site called Teach Astronomy (http://www.teachastronomy.com) has been created to serve astronomy instructors and their students, amateur astronomers, and members of the general public interested in astronomy. The content includes astronomy articles from an introductory level textbook and from the online resource Wikipedia, short video clips, astronomical images, podcasts, and recent news stories. This article describes the technology behind the delivery of those learning resources, which is relevant to the capabilities and limitations of the web site. One key innovation is the Wikimap, a Flash-based tool that presents the visual results of a real-time clustering analysis of hundreds or thousands of text items, displaying the item that best matches the search term and most closely related items. The clustering is carried out in a Lucene index, and it can operate on any database containing items of text. The astronomy content is routinely updated, in some cases daily. Due to the prevalence of smartphones, tablets, and other handheld devices, a simplified non-graphical version of the interface was developed using custom style sheets. Teach Astronomy has a large following of students taking introductory astronomy classes and members of the public with a recreational interest in astronomy. In the past year, there have been 250,000 unique visitors. Currently we are developing a new interface that uses HTML5 instead of Flash to display the Wikimap, an app version of the website for use on smartphones and tablets, and tool to support an instructor and learner community.

Abstract:
Purpose The Internet has been a growing source of health information on hearing loss, but the information provided often varies in quality, readability, and usability. Additionally, the information is provided across a wide range of domains, making access challenging to those who need it. This research forum article describes the development of a new website, SoundSpace Online (Ng, Archbold, Mayer, & Mulla, 2014), which aims to tackle these issues and bring together information and resources for all those concerned with hearing loss. Method The SoundSpace Online website's current developmental state was reached through the following methods: (a) discussions with a group of individuals that included experts in e-learning, education, research, and hearing loss; (b) interviews with different target groups (e.g., users, families, and professionals); and (c) collaboration with contributors. Result The website is structured to become a go-to resource on various topics related to hearing loss, providing accurate, comprehensive, and functional information and resources at varying levels of complexity for the intended users. Conclusion The literature and the range of interest have illustrated the need for an up-to-date website providing information and resources on hearing loss. Challenges include monitoring and keeping the website up to date; in this article, a plan of action is discussed. The website is currently in development, with plans for a launch in the near future.

Abstract:

This project is concerned with identifying and investigating a problem faced by students undertaking studies in opera, namely, readily available performance related materials for students of opera to consult when preparing for a performance. The purpose of this project is to develop an internet-based resource containing a range of information about operas, musical scores and their interpretation, opera recordings, opera literature, opera composers, opera performers, and opera companies as a solution to this problem. The Project uses aspects of opera interpretation and opera libretti as a theoretical framework.

In order to accomplish these outcomes, this project demonstrates that no single source of information that is presently available in print or electronic form is comprehensive, reliable and convenient enough to provide opera students with information necessary for use in a production. The Project highlights the need for an electronic resource that is comprehensive for opera students.

The analysis of the usability of website research literature indicates that successful electronic resources embody the principles of: "24/7", 'anywhere', 'anytime' access; ease-of-access, user-friendly website design; and resources relevant to the specific enquiry of the user in their design.

The Project leads to the conclusion that no single source of information is comprehensive enough for an opera student to acquire, process and assimilate all of the information necessary for use in a production.

The overarching product of the project is a design and guidelines for the development of an internet-based resource aimed at eliminating the lack of performance related materials in the field of opera study. I call this resource Operapaedia.

Abstract:
The aim of this degree thesis is to see what research says about the use of computer and video games to support upper elementary pupils’ development in English reading comprehension in Swedish schools. Other goals are to see how online and offline gaming can be integrated in the Swedish schools and what attitudes teachers have towards gaming. The method used is a systematic literature review and the purpose is to analyze chosen articles and to find relevant content that answers the research questions. Five articles were chosen from different databases and were systematically analyzed in this thesis. The results show that online gaming as support for education can be rewarding for some upper elementary pupils in English learning. However, in English reading comprehension there is not much research found which means that more research needs to be made within this area. Moreover, involving online gaming in English language learning seems to be a challenge for teachers mostly because of their lack of knowledge about the subject, even though they are positive to gaming. The lack of knowledge about the subject could be altered with more education and courses in the area.

Abstract:
In this book, readers will learn practical tips and strategies to teach music appreciation online. As online education is a growing field, an increasing number of teachers trained in traditional/live methods find themselves now teaching online and potentially without mentors to assist them. Students are also changing, seeking highly engaged, relevant, and interactive learning opportunities that connect to their lives. Here, readers will find helpful guidance in planning curriculum; integrating multimedia assets; designing forum discussions; developing assignments; preparing rubrics; engaging in forum discussions; preparing, managing, and teaching the course; providing feedback and grading; and following up with struggling and challenging students. The book can serve as a resource to those already teaching music appreciation online or as a comprehensive guide to those new to the field. Additionally, it may serve as a resource to instructors in other disciplines who seek to shift live courses to the online format, as well as music appreciation instructors who would like to integrate digital or online components into traditional face-to-face courses. The book is organized into five major sections, designed to guide the novice online educator in-depth while also appealing to the seasoned veteran through the ability to review each section as a stand-alone resource. Although some readers will desire to read from cover to cover, they will also be able to move in a nonlinear manner from chapter to chapter, using chapters in modular form, in order to benefit from the sections that most apply to them at any given time.

Abstract:
The failure of customer relationship management (CRM) initiatives to improve the bottom-line has led to authors questioning the direct unconditional effects of CRM on customer loyalty, with calls for more studies to examine possible intervening variables explaining the mechanism of influence between CRM and customer loyalty. While researchers have advanced knowledge on the generative mechanisms by which CRM influences customer loyalty, the mediating role of customer perceived value (CPV) dimensions including functional, social, and emotional values have received very little attention in the literature. This chapter proposes a comprehensive model incorporating CRM, CPV dimensions (including functional, emotional, and social values), and customer loyalty. Underpinned by the resource based-view and equity theories, the proposed model explores the direct and indirect effects of CRM on customer loyalty through CPV dimensions within the banking context. The integrated framework is a result of a careful review of the literature pertaining to CRM, customer loyalty, and CPV.

Abstract:
Extant literature reveals that organizations have interest to transit from an on-premise ERP to the new cloud-based ERP. Using technology-organization-environment, diffusion of innovation, and the model of innovation resistance frameworks as lens, the study aims at identifying factors contributing to adoption of cloud-ERP in Ethiopia. An online survey was conducted using Google Forms. Out of 295 questionnaires distributed, 152 valid questionnaires were collected and considered for the data analysis. The proposed model was tested using a partial least square with the help of SmartPLS. The proposed model explained 58.5% of variance in cloud ERP adoption factors. The result indicated that relative advantage, trust, IT skill, and external pressure had significant influence (P<0.05) on the adoption of cloud ERP in Ethiopia whereas organizational culture, observability, and trialability had no significant impact (P > 0.05) on the adoption of cloud ERP service. The study provides a comprehensive understanding of the factors that affect adoption of cloud-based ERP in Ethiopia.

While government agencies, NGOs, and even commercial entities immediately swing into action to help out, in the case of large disasters, one of the biggest resources – citizens themselves – are underutilized. The rise of social media creates an opportunity for the citizen participation for disaster response management. By harnessing the power of citizen crowdsourcing, the government can have enhanced disaster situation awareness and utilize resources provided by citizen volunteers, resulting in more effective disaster responses. In this paper, the prototype Public Engagement in Emergency Response (PEER) framework is presented. It provides a comprehensive online and mobile crowdsourcing platform for situation reporting and resource volunteering. Events are described that transpired in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy, which demonstrate the benefits of using the PEER framework in a major disaster situation. Also described is how it can alleviate some of the issues associated with the crowdsourcing responses such as fraud.

Abstract:
Graduate Schools offer supports to enhance and improve the graduate skills development of their postgraduate research community not only in their research but also in preparing them for their future careers. The European University Association Council for Doctoral Education has identified the digitalization of doctoral education as necessary to the future to fully globalize the graduate school offerings. This vision is aligned, for example, to several of the objectives in Dublin City University 2017-2022 Strategic Plan. Online supports go towards the development of DCU as a global university allowing us to attract, and to provide aid to, research students who are studying primarily outside of Ireland. The same structured support also benefits staff who are involved in the life cycle of a research student. Therefore, it is important to assess the needs of our graduate researchers in terms of online supports and to provide them with such tools to ascertain if their needs can/are being met. Hence, this chapter begins this journey by determining what online resources our doctoral community use to move their studies forward and then follows on to measure the value of one resource “DoctoralNet,” which offers comprehensive support to such students. This chapter discusses surveyed material, yielding a positive message that our doctoral education requires such digital resources to meet their (students') educational needs.

Abstract:
Product Platform Planning is an emerging philosophy that calls for the planned development and deployment of families of related products. It is markedly different from the traditional product development process, which focuses on optimized designs for individual products. This is a relatively new development in engineering design, which is not typically a part of an engineer’s education. Furthermore, it is different from traditional engineering topics in that it requires an integration of principles from both management and engineering design. All this makes for a new and different topic for which educational material needs to be developed. To address these needs, an online resource has been developed. This resource includes a set of three cases, a tutorial, and a glossary in a multimedia format hosted on the Internet. The tutorial developed for the website presents the basic concepts as well as current research on planning and architecting families of products. The case study section has three cases based on a family of popular power tools. The cases present information in the form of function diagrams, assembly diagrams, customer needs and market-segment data. Links are provided to helpful sites, as well as to relevant sections in the tutorial. Although product platform planning is a relatively new development, a variety of approaches have been used by the research community and practitioners in industry. A need was felt for a comprehensive, coherent source of knowledge in this field on which to base the case studies, and also as a means to providing a single source of information to users of this resource. Accordingly, a literature review was conducted and an overall process description was developed. This paper presents and describes the online learning resource which was developed. In addition, the literature review and the process description of platform planning that were developed are also detailed.

Abstract:
The sharing economy offers great potential for companies to access resources in a more sustainable way, to create knowledge synergies or to save costs. This potential is particularly attractive to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as it provides access to scarce resources that otherwise are not affordable. However, sharing resources in B2B is not yet widespread. Therefore, in this project, which is supported by the Swiss federation, we aimed at promoting sharing between SMEs. To do so, we developed tools supporting different phases of sharing projects. This paper focuses on the initial phase of a sharing project where SMEs interested in sharing need to find partners. The tool we developed for that purpose supports partner matching. To develop the tool, we started with an extensive literature review to identify the factors that contribute to a successful sharing. This review revealed a total of about 40 success factors. From these, the most critical factors were selected through expert judgment and testing as described below. This resulted in a final set of 16 factors deemed important and demonstrated to be distinctive. Expert judgment to validate the success factors was conducted by the means of interviews (n=10) with representatives of Swiss SMEs interested in B2B sharing. Beside factor validation, results from the interviews showed that companies have a very heterogeneous understanding of what factors are important for a successful sharing. The importance assigned to the different success factors seemed to strongly depend on characteristics of the resource to be shared and on the importance of a particular resource to the individual SME's business. We concluded that consensus on the importance of success factors is not a prerequisite for successful sharing. Rather, it is important that the different objectives and associated expectations for sharing are not incompatible. Thus, the success factors can help identify potential areas of incompatibility and thus clarify where consensus needs to be found and where heterogeneous views will not have a negative impact on a successful partnership. To test the success factors, we operationalized and integrated them into a diagnostic tool that allows interested companies to self-assess and enables them to find potentially suitable sharing partners. This tool was tested by Swiss SMEs (n=10). Based on the tests, two version of the diagnostic tool were developed: A short version with five items that supports platform-based online matching, and a long version with 16 items that supports a more comprehensive negotiating process between partners willing to share resources. The two versions of the tool, the operationalized criteria as well as the tool application will be presented in the paper.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, a comprehensive roadmap is presented that aims to provide an accessible and convenient resource for pre-collegiate students who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The presented roadmap will be an effective guide to the students who are wishing to pursue STEM education independently in preparation for further studies or for personal development, but unsure of the specific activities and skills they require to kickstart them. The road map will also serve as a practical guide for teachers, counselors, and caretakers to guide and inform students interested in STEM tracks. This roadmap covers various recommended activities and courses that impart students with the necessary knowledge, experiences, and skills that are central in STEM studies and careers. An extensive literature review is conducted on various STEM programs from all around the globe that have a high impact on students in their respective fields, along with a recommended grade level for participation in said course/activity. Presented by this paper in each overview section are the individual advantages of each program with reference to skill acquisition, networking opportunities and even possible credits or accreditation detailed. Most of the presented programs are accessible online or in schools and STEM centers in most regions. Students who follow and complete this road map will not only be pre-equipped with the engineering knowledge before joining college but also will improve their position as a candidate for undergraduate or advanced level course selection.

Belli, Gabriella. "Finding, evaluating, & organizing internet resources: issues for statistics instruction." In Statistics and the Internet. International Association for Statistical Education, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.52041/srap.03316.

Full text
Abstract:
The Internet and the WWW have brought a new dimension to statistical education, given the availability of a variety of resources. These may be used as primary or supplementary material and range from comprehensive electronic statistical and methodological textbooks to applets that demonstrate a single statistical idea. They include specialized guides, demonstrations, and data sets. Online materials may make use of hypertext, graphics images, sound files, or text. Many instructors place their course syllabus, assignments, PowerPoint presentations, and Web links online for students. Instructors can ask students to search the archives in e-journals or to interact with each other via on- line bulleting boards or computer conferencing. An integral part of distance education, such tools can provide tremendous enhancement to the traditional classroom course. Given the range of options, how easy is it to find the proper resources for inclusion in a statistics course? How much material is available? How do we evaluate it? What resources exist to help faculty use the Internet resources well? These questions are addressed and, while some useful sites are provided, the main goal is to provide a discussion about the issues of finding, evaluating, and organizing Internet resources.

Abstract:
During the spring of 2020 ChoiceFlows Inc. (Choiceflows) researchers document an approach for small and medium-sized businesses to make informed decisions about equitable and resilient reopening after COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns and restrictions. The client is 501(c)(3) chartered Restart Partners in Washington State and their client, the State of Washington Department of Commerce. After several revisions, an agreement is signed on December 30, 2020 to make the approach real with development and deployment in 2021 using Cares Act Grant money from the U.S. Federal Government. The result is Smart WA – and can be freely accessed online here: https://smartwa.us Smart WA is the result of unique primary research conducted by Choiceflows involving citizens and residents of Washington State, and many days of secondary research finding publicly available data sources and bringing them together in one place to provide both comprehensive and easier to use data to make informed decisions. The research behind Smart WA is the first study to comprehensively examine how specific COVID-19 transmission reduction actions influence planned visits to different types of businesses. Data on Smart WA is organized by Human Health, Economic Health, and Community Experience metrics – and displayed as composite scores. The entire online system is powered by Tanjo.ai machine learning, a Choiceflows business partner, and is updated from all data sources daily. The advent of the COVID pandemic disrupts a wide range of businesses that directly serve the public and causes a dramatic fall in visits to these establishments. Businesses face a wide range of options in how to respond ranging from the pre-pandemic status quo and doing nothing to prevent the spread of the virus to shutting down businesses due to a lack of customers.Recognizing this, Smart WA has a “what-if” game-like section that allows a business to model the choices that they can make for reopening, and what they can expect from customers based on real data from people in the state. The relevant question from a small business perspective is: If we take an action or actions that influence COVID-19 transmission and make it known to our customers, how will that influence those customers to visit? The research supporting this function was conducted in four waves of surveys designed and administered during 2021, making it one of the most comprehensive research programs of its type during COVID with snapshots of customer preferences being collected over several month intervals. We document the development of this COVID Choices research using the Choiceflows pioneered Volumetric Choice Experiment (VCE) method and design and in parallel the online system. This provides a platform for projecting how the insights and methods from this work can be used for other issues facing small and medium size businesses to aid in and speed decision making and choice. This includes and dashboards for policymakers and main street for allocating resources for commerce, including economic development, ongoing community health, and supporting quality of life indicators.

Abstract:
Learning that is facilitated by electronic technologies, otherwise known as e-Leaming, can be either fully online, mixed mode (also known as hybrid), or web assisted; however, regardless of the delivery method, there are numerous tools and features at the disposal of students and instructors, and it is important for the e-learning community to examine both preferences and usage of these features. This paper presents the findings of a comprehensive study that examined the elearning perceptions and preferences of students enrolled at a historically black university. During this study a series of courses were specially designed to be intensive hybrid learning experiences. The Blackboard CE 6 Course Management System was adopted and paper-less learning experiences created. The results of the analysis indicate that students find course Websites to be helpful resources that enhance the understanding of course content, and that these Websites will continue to have an impact on higher education in the future. The examination of individual e-learning components indicated that students responded favorably to most available features. The strongest preference noted in this study was towards the online submission of assignments, with students overwhelmingly noting that they like having the ability to check their assignment grades online.

Ben-Alon, Lola, Vivian Loftness, Kent A. Harries, and Erica Cochran Hameen. "Overcoming the Perceptual Gap: Worldwide Perceived Comfort Survey of Earthen Building Experts and Homeowners." In 4th International Conference on Bio-Based Building Materials. Switzerland: Trans Tech Publications Ltd, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4028/www.scientific.net/cta.1.521.

Full text
Abstract:
Earthen building materials are a critical future for sustainable construction because they are locally available, minimally processed, and waste-free. However, despite their advantages, earthen materials still face challenges for comprehensive implementation. First, their technical data vary significantly, making it challenging to quantify their true performance for different climates and environmental contexts. Second, people mistakenly perceive these materials as low-tech and poor in their performance. Lastly, building codes and standards do not comprehensively represent these materials worldwide. This work identifies perceptual barriers that hold back the broader implementation of earthen materials in order to ascertain possible solutions and assess the performance of earthen buildings and perceived comfort among primary resources such as practicing professionals and people who live in earthen houses. The results of an online survey of 126 earthen building experts and homeowners are presented, providing important insights regarding a range of barriers to, and motivating factors for, the implementation of earthen materials, as well as design and thermal performance aspects of existing earthen homes. The results of the surveys show that, of the various earthen building techniques, light straw clay requires the lowest maintenance, and construction of adobe and/or clay plaster encountered the least barriers to implementation. The energy performance of existing earthen homes show that all types of earthen materials reduce the need for cooling, in all climate zones. Insulation over earthen walls was shown to increase occupants’ perceived comfort levels, but only slightly. Additional results provide significant recommendations for future research on thermal performance and comfort guidelines for earthen structures. This study contributes to the development of environmental and policy measures that could be used by policymakers by synthesizing technical and environmental data and by identifying means of improving the perception of natural building.
