Abstract:
According to truth-conditional pragmatics, a word may contribute an ad hoc concept to the proposition expressed, that is, something that differs from the concept the word encodes (the lexicalized concept). In relevance-theoretic lexical pragmatics, ad hoc concepts are treated like a species of concepts proper. Concepts as well as ad hoc concepts are taken to be atomic. Lexical pragmatic adjustment is conceived as the formation of an ad hoc concept that is narrower or broader in extension (or both) than the lexicalized concept involved. We argue that difference in extension should not be taken as the crucial feature of lexical pragmatics, since ad hoc concepts can have the same extension as the lexicalized concept. In contrast, we propose a positive view of ad hoc concepts as clusters of information poised to be used in inference. (Surprisingly, ad hoc concepts turn out not to be concepts at all.) The cluster account drops the assumption that ad hoc concepts are atomic and can therefore provide a satisfactory explanation of lexical pragmatic adjustment.

Abstract:
This article traces the mediated formation of L2 pragmatics concepts as it occurred in classroom interactions during a concept-based pragmatics instruction enrichment program in a first-semester university-level Spanish class. Building on previous research documenting the outcomes of such enrichment programs, we delve into the microgenesis of pragmatic concepts through careful line-by-line analysis of interactions between students and their teacher. We focus in particular on one student, Donna, and show how classroom interaction provided an opportunity for her to pick up and reappropriate relevant conceptual language that in turn developed into new pragmatic concepts. We argue that Donna's contributions to classroom interactions were not simply evidence of what she knew about Spanish pragmatics but were constitutive of the developmental process as it occurred in real time.

This paper shows the importance pragmatic competence has gainedthrough time with the development of the concept of communicativecompetence. Towards that aim a description of the circumstancesin which the concept of communicative competence emerged ispresented in addition to two different models of communicativecompetence: the model of Canale and Swain (1980, 1983) and themodel of Bachman (1990). As a consequence of the role pragmaticcompetence plays to help learners be communicatively competent, the area of learners’ interlanguage pragmatics has gained increasedattention. Observational and interventional studies have beenconducted to understand the process of pragmatic acquisition.Factors that influence the learning of pragmatics have beenidentified, and issues related to the teachability of pragmatics andtesting pragmatic ability have been tackled.

Abstract:
Linguistic pragmatics is one of the most promising and new areas of modern linguistics, which is an integral part of the theory of language and is studied in the course of general linguistics. Lingvopragmatics refers to the study of how language is used in specific contexts and social settings. It combines the fields of pragmatics, which studies how meaning is constructed through language use, and linguistics, which studies the scientific structure and function of language. This field examines how pragmatic factors such as social context, speaker intentions, implication, presupposition, and the cooperative principle interact with linguistic elements to influence communication.

Abstract:
This study deals with lexical pragmatic perspective not only due to its new birth but also for being a bridge that links two vivid linguistic fields that are pragmatics and semantics. On one hand, pragmatics tackles speech elements and speaker’s disclosed meaning. On the other hand, semantics is framed as the components of conceptual structure that can be represented in a certain proposition. Jackendoff (1990) comes with the concept that pragmatics and semantics, respectively, investigate how the meaning is constructed in a text regarding the speaker’s attention and the inherent meaning of words and phrases. This study examines the workability of lexical pragmatic analysis in analyzing certain Quranic lexemes concerning clouds and rain. It attempts to apply the four-leveled lexical pragmatic mutual adjustment method of analysis to selected Quranic verses highlighting both lexical and adjusted meanings of the words ‘clouds’ and ‘rain’ in the verses in question. It sums up to prove the applicability of the adopted model of analysis to the selected genre. Adjusted meaning can be interpreted either by specifying or generalizing it to fit its context.

Abstract:
Some concepts — and hence the thoughts that contain them — are relatively ineffable. Some literary communication nevertheless attempts to eff these concepts. This article is interested in the nature of such concepts and the extent to which pragmatics can deal with them. I discuss the idea, familiar from Relevance Theory and developed in Carston (1996; forthcoming), that pragmatic inferencing is involved in on-line ad hoc concept construction, certainly in the case of concept narrowing, but also possibly in the case of concept loosening. I then discuss the relative effability of non-lexicalised concepts, borrowing from Sperber and Wilson (1998) and focussing on phenomenal concepts (or concepts with a significant phenomenal component). I then define poetic thoughts as thoughts containing such concepts.

Abstract:
The article clarifies the essence of the phenomenon of terminological pragmatics. Significant gaps in the study of the phenomenon of pragmatics in professional (academic) discourse are emphasized. The essence and methods of defining pragmatic components in terms are explained. The article proves that linguistic pragmatics is a discipline that studies the patterns of language use as well as speech linguistics. It is emphasized that in terminological research it is necessary some procedures: to identify and analyze the pragmatics of each terms, as well as to clarify the features of identifying the pragmatics of scientific texts (i.e. in academic discourse), which is, for example, understanding the communicative need met by the research author and in determining the dominant function performed by the text. The researcher’s need is often to start a scientific discussion about the study’s content and choose the primary function that the text performs. Although linguistic pragmatics, including terminology, does not have clear definitions, it is formed by a wide range of issues related to the subject and addressee of communication, their interaction, the situation of communication, etc. In this regard, it is emphasized that each author-researcher seeks to convey to the addressee the true information about the concept and thus forms the intention of the term-making act, which is actually pragmatics that should be understood as “the interpreter’s attitude to the term-sign”. In the proposed exploration, the concept of ‘connotation of terms’ is considered as a type of concept to the generic ‘pragmatics of terms’; ‘shade of meaning of the term’ is recognized as a variant concept to ‘connotation of terms’. It is emphasized that the phenomenon of a ‘shade of meaning’ as an element of the semantic structure of one term-concept and the phenomenon of ‘shade of meaning’ as a component and method of determining distance between meanings (synonyms, doublets, variants, etc.) are not distinguished in the work.

Background. Translation is a powerful tool that serves the interests of friendship, brotherhood and cooperation between peoples, the expansion of economic, political, scientific, cultural and literary ties between them [10, 29]. Translation accelerates the process of interaction and interaction between the literatures of different peoples. Thanks to the translated works, readers will enjoy the masterpieces of world literature, their aesthetic sense will increase, their tastes will grow, and they will have an idea about beautiful things. Translation, as a necessary tool for the development of languages, accelerates their development, increases and improves the richness of vocabulary. Translation enriches a person's spiritual life, expands the possibilities of the native language, enriches it. Methods. A comparative study of the means of different languages to create a translational consistency requires the identification of the aesthetic specificity of the literary text, the methodological and pragmatic features of its material-logical, emotionally expressive and figurative elements, and the stylistic basis.

Nicholas, Allan Leslie John. "A dynamic assessment of interactional competence in Japanese learners of EFL : the act of requesting." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/27315.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to bring together the area of pragmatics in second language learning (SLL), and dynamic assessment (DA), and in doing so offer an alternative way of both assessing pragmatics and providing its instruction. DA aims to provide a detailed analysis of not only a learner’s current stage of development, but also their still developing abilities. Unifying instruction and assessment, the learner and a mediator co-construct a task, with the mediator providing assistance when necessary. By examining both the types of mediation practices and their frequency, insights can be gained as to the learner’s still maturing abilities, and future potential. DA also aims to uncover sources of learner difficulty, offering a diagnostic function as part of assessment. Drawing on conversation analysis research, the work of Gal’Perin and DA methodology, this study carried out a DA of the speech act of requesting in spoken interaction, assessing the effectiveness with which the DA promoted development in the learners. Further, the ability of the DA to uncover specific locations of learner difficulty was examined, as well as the ways in which the interlocutors successfully negotiated the opening and closing of mediation sequences. Six Japanese EFL learners in a university context co-constructed a number of role-play type language tasks with the researcher. In the first stage of the study, the researcher did not offer support to the learners, while in the following stage, mediation was provided when appropriate. The findings were used to inform the enrichment programme (EP) portion of the study, in which the learners met with the researcher for a period of four weeks, receiving tutoring. This was followed by further non-dynamic and dynamic assessments, to allow analysis of learner development. The study’s findings indicate that DA methodology, when applied to the speech act of requesting, can be an effective way to both promote learner development and assess learners’ abilities. Compared with the pre-EP assessments, participants produced more complex interactions that frequently showed evidence of taking the social context of the role-plays into account, as well as assuming greater responsibility for successfully completing the tasks. Participants were also more frequently able to verbally explain their language choices with reference to the target concepts of the assessments and EP. Further, overall, the opening and closing of mediation sequences were accomplished with more implicit negotiation practices, indicating increased interactive competence. The DA was also successful in locating specific locations of learner difficulty.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to outline the concept of VAGUENESS in ordinary discourse by analyzing the uses of the adjectives vague in French and vage in German employed by speakers encountering an expression or an utterance they judge vague. The data consist of newspaper articles containing value judgments like “c’est vague” (it’s vague), “réponse vague” (vague answer), “expression vague” (vague expression), etc. By means of a qualitative and inductive method, this study acknowledges a special interest in ordinary speakers’ metalinguistic evaluative statements and attempts to determine the different meanings and functions attached to those evaluating terms. It will be shown that the use of the words vague/vage may point out a lack of information, a high degree of abstractness or a problem of multi-referentiality of the expression being judged; it is also possible to make assumptions about the pragmatic functions those judgments are fulfilling, such as, for instance, disqualifying one’s opponent, a common strategy in political debate situations. Inspired by Folk Linguistic studies, this thesis distinguishes itself from logical- and philosophical approaches as well as from the methodology of some pragmatic researches about vagueness and, in so doing, endeavors to contribute to a larger definition of the concept

Fisher, Justin. "Pragmatic Conceptual Analysis." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195796.

Full text
Abstract:
Pragmatic Conceptual Analysis is a proposed methodology for attributing correct application conditions, or 'meanings', to concepts. This methodology involves two stages: first, we seek an empirical understanding of the ways in which usage of a given concept has regularly delivered benefits, and, second, we seek an explication of that concept which is optimally capable of delivering benefits in these ways. Such an explication captures the 'pragmatic meaning' of a given concept. Chapters 1-3 articulate Pragmatic Conceptual Analysis and the notion of pragmatic meaning, and show how these are related to other philosophical methodologies and accounts of concept-meaning.Chapter 4 uses a 'bootstrapping argument' to establish that Pragmatic Conceptual Analysis has two important virtues. The first phase of this argument establishes that Pragmatic Conceptual Analysis has normative authority - it reveals explications that we have practical and epistemic reason to adopt, whether we take these explications to be semantically revisionary or not. This normative authority licenses using Pragmatic Conceptual Analysis, in the second phase, to explicate our shared concept of concept-meaning. This yields the conclusion that we have epistemic reason to adopt the notion of pragmatic meaning as our explication of 'concept-meaning'. Having explicated our concept in this way, we see that Pragmatic Conceptual Analysis also has descriptive authority - it is a semantically conservative tool that reveals concept-meaning, thus explicated. The initial presentation of the bootstrapping argument considers only one sort of work that our concept of concept-meaning does - helping to guide our application of other concepts. But this concept also regularly delivers benefits in a second way - by helping us to give good explanations for the behavior and behavioral success of various concept-users. Chapter 5 uses the normative authority of Pragmatic Conceptual Analysis to justify a particular account of how good explanations work. Chapter 6 draws upon this account to argue that, in order best to explain people's behavioral successes, we need an explication of concept-meaning that is closely related to the one presented in Chapter 4.Chapter 7 considers several objections and hard cases, and argues that Pragmatic Conceptual Analysis weathers these storms in good shape.

McKay, Joanna Patricia. "The official concept of the nation in the GDR : theory versus pragmatism." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1995. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1376/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the attempts by the leadership of the GDR to devise a concept of the nation which suited their objectives regarding the future of the state and of Germany as a whole, from 1949 until 1989. A simple analysis of official pronouncements on the subject over the years reveals serious inconsistencies and dramatic U-turns. This thesis considers various factors which may have shaped the official line, including the influence of Bonn and Moscow, public opinion and personal convictions. In particular it examines the input of experts from academic institutions in order to answer the question of whether or not the official line on the nation had a clear theoretical basis, or was purely determined by pragmatic considerations. In order to investigate what lay behind official policy, extensive use has been made of material from the SED's Central Party Archive, and interviews were conducted with leading theorists. In this way it was possible to gain a better understanding of the interaction between the political and theoretical aspects of the National Question in the former GDR. The findings reveal that the official concept of the nation was primarily determined by pragmatic, or even opportunistic considerations, and was viewed by the SED leadership as a means to legitimise the GDR in the absence of alternative methods. Initially the intention was to reinforce the claim that the GDR was a model for a future united socialist Germany, but later a concept was fashioned to support the idea that it was an independent sovereign state, and in no way linked to the Federal Republic. However, the regime was heavily reliant on the skills of theorists to provide credible (Marxist-Leninist) justifications for policy changes, and to modify policies in order to make them more acceptable and therefore more effective as a means to legitimise the state.

Meyer, Elizabeth Christina. "An analysis of the duty of care concept from a pragmatic medical malpractice perspective." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/60065.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus in the mini-dissertation is the concept of the duty of care which is analysed from a pragmatic medical malpractice perspective. South Africa has experienced a sharp increase in medical malpractice litigation in recent years and, although there is anecdotal evidence that many of these cases are without merit, this trend causes great concern in both public and private health sectors. The South African medical malpractice liability system is replete with contradictions ? why is it that not all patients who suffer negligent injuries institute action against health care professionals, and why do other patients who suffered no negligent injury, litigate? Theories that good communication may be a factor and that physicians who communicate well with their patients are less likely to be sued are supported in the dissertation. The duty of care, although a legal concept, lies at the heart of good medical practice. Physicians owe their patients a duty of care, both in contract and in delict. Codes of ethics further influence the standard of behaviour of the physician. Concerns have been expressed that there is a decline in professionalism and that the standard of care offered has decreased. Physicians are not infallible and to err is human. As South Africa is a country with limited resources it may be necessary to opt for a utilitarian standard of care that in many instances is below that which is expected in the developed world, but there is no ethical or legal reason why patients should be denied the duty of care. The foundations in contract and delict of the duty of care are laid down and the relevance of standards of care in this context is outlined. Actions constituting negligence are examined and the responsibilities of the health professional in relation to the duty of care are discussed and applied in the context of South African medical malpractice. Recommendations are proposed for consideration to curb the South African medical malpractice storm.<br>Mini Dissertation (MPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2017.<br>Public Law<br>MPhil<br>Unrestricted

Hunt, Paul Christopher. "Polybius' concept of pragmatike historia : constitution decline and the struggle for the Peloponnese." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2003. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1383045/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis will contend that Polybius' stress on Achaean unity was related to his need to contrast how tyche and anacyclosis, the two vital supernatural forces that he believed influenced historical events, had influenced the Achaean system of polity detrimentally. Examining the rationale behind Aetolian intervention in the Peloponnese during the Hellenistic period, it will contend that the Aetolians and their allies in Elis and Sparta were engaged in a struggle for control over the Peloponnese against the Macedonians and their Arcadian allies, a situation the Romans exploited. During the Second Macedonian War Polybius presents the Achaean league and Rome acting as equals; this was related to his desire to show the eventual decline in Greece that allowed the Romans to gain control. In reality Flamininus exploited Megalopolitan fears over Aetolian and Spartan interests to ensure the Peloponnese remained stable during the Aetolian/Syrian War. Afterwards Polybius took the question of the Spartan exiles, a relatively unimportant question, and presented its resolution as the decisive turning point in the relationship between Rome and the Achaean league, Callicrates' speech in front of the senate marking the onset of the final stage of anacyclosis in Achaean democracy. This process continued in his portrayal of later events; Polybius was detained by the Romans because of his sympathy for Perseus during the Third Macedonian War; however he blamed Callicrates because at this point he wished to present the corruption and decline that was occurring in the Achaean league. This process ended with the destruction of Corinth in 146BC, where Polybius emphasises the madness and irrationality of the Achaean mob and leadership. This was to provide his readers with the consolation that their society would emerge renewed and strengthened at a time that the Roman Republic began its eventual decline through the resumption of anacyclosis.

Abstract:
Proficiency is a widely used concept in second language (L2) pragmatics where it is commonly viewed as lexico-grammatical knowledge, and can be measured by means of standardised or researcher-designed tests, or estimated on the basis of levels in a language program. It is a common grouping variable in research studies, allowing researchers to compare the pragmatic or interactional abilities of learners at different proficiency levels, and such studies have overwhelmingly found a strong contribution of proficiency to L2 pragmatics. However, this contribution varies depending on the area of pragmatics investigated, and the degree of overlap depends strongly on the measurement instruments for both proficiency and pragmatics. We illustrate this through a study on the effect of proficiency on implicit and explicit pragmatic knowledge.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers the relation between hypocrisy and the concept of face. It is argued that face is an ideal lens through which to view both the inevitability of hypocrisy and also its various hues. This inevitability is the result of the unavoidability of face in interaction. Face is more than an affective attribute to which homage must be paid. It is the essential means without which most communication would grind to a halt, and in that facework involves interactants giving off impressions of themselves and forming impressions of others present which may not be correct, there is a sense in which face makes hypocrites of us all. Examples of this accidental and essentially beneficial hypocrisy are analysed in support of this argument. The chapter then proceeds to an example of the more obviously beneficial facet of hypocrisy, when it is used to save and/or enhance people’s faces. A subsequent brief consideration of hypocrisy in speech acts again finds that it has positive social value.

Politeness in notices translated from Greek into English in Thessaloniki’s public spaces from a cross-cultural perspective and translator/student translator evaluations." In Pragmatics and Translation. John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.1075/pbns.337.06lee.

Abstract:
This chapter examines notices that have been translated from Greek into English and are visible in the public spaces of Thessaloniki. It uses photographic data collected during ethnographic fieldwork in the city in 2020, a time that coincided with the Covid-19 pandemic and an increased number of signs. By drawing on Brown and Levinson’s concept of face and more recent discursive approaches to politeness, the chapter explores the ways in which Greek politeness is expressed and rendered into English and how a group of translation students and translation professionals perceive the degree to which the Greek source texts have been successfully rendered into English.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Starting out from a general model of discourse orientation in semantic change (Narrog 2012a, Narrog and Heine 2021), this chapter inquires into a specific process of speaker-orientation, labeled as ‘extreme subjectification’ by Langacker (2003). That process has been applied mainly to modal and temporal meanings. The goal is to investigate whether the concept, which has been proposed from a synchronic perspective, is also valid diachronically. Data from English, German and Japanese modal markers show that while the concept basically also holds from a historical perspective, it may apply not to all modal categories. Furthermore, I point out that there is semantic change of discourse orientation that goes beyond ‘extreme subjectification’.

Abstract:
After a three-month Covid-19 lockdown, the Spanish national and regional governments implemented stringent rules to curb the pandemic’s spread during the “new normal”. These measures aimed to reduce face-to-face interactions while sustaining economic and educational activities, reshaping social behaviours and perceptions. Notably, a distinct shift occurred in Spain’s landscape of social groups and relationships, traditionally characterised by keywords like familia and amigos/amigas used to refer to close connections. Emerging from political and legal jargon, technical terms such as unidad familiar, conviviente, and grupo burbuja entered the public sphere and everyday conversation. Using the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) framework, this study analyses these expressions, revealing that, unlike familia and amigos/amigas, the new terms are primarily grounded in the concept of “space” and lack an inherent emotional component. This finding prompts reflection on the potential impact of these concepts on people’s mindsets in the “new normal” era.

We use a concept-based instruction (CBI) approach to teach L2 English oral requests among Japanese EFL learners. Control (n = 30) and enrichment groups (n = 26) participated in a classroom-based investigation of CBI and requests. The enrichment group engaged in a short CBI programme, while the control group received no instruction. Pre- and post-enrichment phases for both groups consisted of role play-type tasks in dyads, and self-assessment of performances. Comparing these phases, the enrichment group saw a significant increase in self-evaluation scores; similarly, analysis of request performances found significant increases in conversational features and strategies. However, there was no significant change in the ways enrichment group participants connected their language choices to social context. Results are discussed, and implications for classroom practice suggested.

Abstract:
Abstract Drawing on Ochs and Capps’ (1996) concept of partial selves constructed through narrative and Tannen’s (2008) concept of Master Narratives, I employ Bamberg’s (1997) tri-level framework of narrative positioning to analyze two English-language Instagram posts by a popular American transgender Instagrammer, whom I call Gregory Bauer. I consider each post to be a multimodal narrative which employs multiple semiotic resources afforded by the online platform — including verbal strategies, hashtags, and images of the body. I demonstrate how Bauer constructs his identity as a proud transgender man who has overcome hardship and fosters online community for transgender people, who are at the periphery of mainstream society, of LGBTQ+ communities, and of academic studies. I also consider the ways in which Bauer’s narratives construct a normative view of what it means to be transgender, demonstrating that those at the periphery can construct norms for their own community which position themselves as more central and those that deviate as more marginal. The analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of transgender narrators and narratives, as well as to the rapidly emergent literature on multimodal storytelling in digital communication.

Abstract:
Abstract The offshore deepsea sector has few margins for error, subsea assets at &amp;gt;2000 ft (max≈10000 ft) depth need to engage safe, and efficient, designs which are robust and capable of withstanding extreme sea state stresses and seabed loadings under high internal pressure, and high temperature conditions (HP/HT). On top of the mechanical challenges there are immense demands from the materials and corrosion side. Unpredictable failures can cause major problems regarding HSE, personnel safety, capital investment, and public reputation, not withstanding the fact that remedial action would be extremely difficult and costly. One new approach has been to utilize the concept of Inherently Safe Design (ISD), within the auspices of ALARP. The principle was previously considered too high level and perhaps over esoteric and not cost effective at CAPEX. However after years of limited acceptance it is now more appropriate, and with the result that decisions such as options for CRA`s are being used on a larger scale than ever before. And drivers are now in place to help merge and reconcile CAPEX and OPEX spending, so that costs and resources are shared to the mutual benefit of the project. Carbon steel as a pipeline material with inhibitors has been the staple for years, but with the increased price of steel, well fluid aggressivity and complexity of localized corrosion, (CO2 corrosion in particular), a major series of JIP`s, R&amp;D, and modeling programs have been ongoing with very significant results. The learning’s have been gradually disseminated through the offshore communities; however the pace of progress has not kept up with the demand for pragmatic answers. And to that effect many subsea developments have proceeded to overcome the corrosion issues with an intervention solution such as internal coatings or internal CRA lining or cladding. In particular the use of suitable fit for purpose CRA’s for flowlines had previously seen great promise, but the costs were prohibitive often &amp;gt; 10-15 times the equivalent cost of steel. However the introduction of CRA liners or cladding has proven very successful. In particular the focus has been on the cost manageable alloys such as the austenitic stainless, and nickel based alloys (304, 316, 904, 825, 625 etc). The use of thin, typically 3 mm CRA internal liners designed to form a physical barrier at the fluid interface, within the steel pipe containment can reduce the cost burdens substantially (often &amp;lt;5-7 times equivalent) with the added benefit of fewer corrosion issues, reduced inspection, greater confidence in operability, fewer downtime periods, and lower risk of failure. The duplex CRA’s are also feasible but tend to be used as solid material only rather than clad or lined. A very reasonable track record is being amassed and it is surmised that deepwater assets will now tend to utilize this rapidly evolving approach.

Abstract:
This paper examines the relationship between the objective and subjective theories of contract interpretation from both historical and teleological perspectives. It introduces the concept of contractual opportunism in this matter and reviews existing legal literature on the topic to elucidate the distinctions and connections between the interpretive theory based on the internal will of the parties and the one which looks at their objectively manifested intentions. By analysing the foundational ideas of W. Paley and R. J. Pothier, it highlights the importance of integrating pragmatic elements into the discussion. The paper concludes that a purely dogmatic analysis is insufficient in this area, and instead we must consider the underlying purpose of the theories: to discourage and prevent contractual opportunism.

Abstract:
In the present paper we aim to analyze the way the philosophical theories on the concept of truth find their applicability in the contemporary society and their influences on moral decisions and the making of justice. First, we will refer to the main philosophical theories in this matter: the correspondence theory of truth, the coherence of truth and the pragmatic theory regarding the truth and, also, to some relevant contemporary theories regarding the truth. Then, we will analyze how these theories fit into the lives of contemporary people, the link between truth and justice and how different types of errors and lies affect the proper functioning of society and the adequate development of the interpersonal relations. In the final part of the paper, we will describe the effect of errors upon the good administration of justice. We will argue that the good development of our social lives depends on the trust we have in each other and in the authorities. Also, the success of our actions depends on how well we know the difference between truth and error, how correct and logical our thinking is. Our sense of morality, justice and good is linked to the truth and implies avoidance of intentional or not intentional errors. If errors occur, they must be corrected as soon as possible in order not to lose trust in the social system.

Abstract:
The research objective for the present article is to explore the landscape of theories related to the semantic vericonditional aspect, which is a basic feature of the utterance. Collecting the theoretical kit in order to aggregate the relevant conceptual framework will allow us to operationalize and apply them in the architecture of the theoretical interpretative process as well as in the analysis of the subject of interest: parliamentary discourse - a subspecies of political discourse. The given investigation proceeds from the establishment of a conceptual framework, a delimitation of the distinctions between semantics and pragmatics, the complex phrase being the fundamental unit of syntax and formal semantics with vericonditional compositional content that needs to be saturated with meaning - the default interpretation. The utterance, the unit of discourse mobilizes all contextual information, resolves the ambiguities of lexical semantics - disambiguates the elements with the scalar palette of meaning - generalized common ground implicature but also arising from the context taking into account the principle of consistency and relevance. The level of post-pragmatic, particularized implicature are subjects of preferred interpretation and do not depend on the content of the concrete utterance in context. In the case study examples, they concern loyalty to the homeland, ideology and party affiliation, dismantling right-wing extremist-radicalist tendencies, hack-ing the anti-Semitic concept and using the term as a weapon for different situations and contexts. The article is informed by several evolved key works on pragmatist theories including formal semantic minimalism theory, semantic underdetermination theory, cognitivist relevance theory, scalarity of meaning theory, and factorization theory. All of these theories bring their contribution to the theoretical understanding and pragmatic analysis of sophisticated public discourse.

Abstract:
Effective advertising of entrepreneurship is important for its quality and development. Semiotics (the science of sign systems) can help a lot in this respect. One of the main reasons for this is that every semiotic concept is also an efficient communicative approach or a communicative strategy. In this article, its author analyses advertising of entrepreneurship from the standpoints of four semiotic branches - alphabetics, semantics, syntactics and pragmatics. Visual metaphors are central part in these analyses - due to the fact, that the adpersons produce more than 90 percent of creative ads with their help. Ad appeals are the most important part of marketing pragmatics. The author thoroughly studies the eco appeals and the appeals for support (assistance), that are some of the most significant for entrepreneurial marketing communications. The article is important from the perspective of entrepreneurial advertising and provides valuable practical advice on how the adpersons can use semiotic concepts as effective communicative approaches and strategies.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of the immersion of aesthetics in the social, especially when it comes to the documentary theatrical fact, increasingly requires the approach of the work of art, implicitly, the dramatic one, from the perspective of two key concepts — „truth” and „artistic truth”. Appearing at the beginning of the twentieth century, as an anti-canonical form, the documentary theater provoked a series of discussions, some of them denying the concept of „artistic truth” as a characteristic of this spectacular manifestation. Thus, in the article, references are made to different perspectives (ontological, logical-semantic, value-existential and gnoseological), theories (of correspondence, coherence, operational-pragmatics, etc.), while analyzing the relationship „art/documentary theater — truth — artistic truth”.

Abstract:
The study is devoted to the linguopragmatic analysis of the company’s elevator pitch as one of the efficient genres of business communication, which is gaining great public interest in the modern business environment. Despite the wide practical implementation, the scientific comprehension of elevator pitch, especially from the point of view of pragmalinguistics, which studies language in the context of its efficient usage, remains insufficient. Elevator pitch is considered not just as a structured speech, but as a complex pragmatic tool that requires from the speaker a clear understanding of the essence of the sentence, as well as the ability to adapt to the context and expectations of the audience to achieve the communicative goals set in the conditions of limited time. The study draws on the theoretical provisions of pragmatics, the theory of speech acts, communicative strategies and the concept of linguistic adaptation, demonstrating how the choice of linguistic means and speech construction relate to the speaker's intentions and the listener's expectations. The research emphasizes the importance of developing communicative competence for successful application of the elevator pitch in modern business practice.

Abstract:
Standard dredging operations during thin layer placement (TLP) projects are labor intensive as crews are necessary to periodically move the outfall location, which can have lasting adverse effects on the marsh surface. In an effort to increase efficiency during TLP, a novel Sediment Distribution Pipe (SDP) system was investigated. This system offers multiple discharge points along the pipeline to increase the sediment distribution while reducing pipeline movements. An SDP Modeling Application (SDPMA) was developed to assist in the design of SDP field applications by quickly assessing the pressure and velocity inside the discharge pipe and approximating the slurry throw distances. An SDP field proof of concept was performed during a two-phase TLP on Sturgeon Island, New Jersey, in 2020. The SDPMA was shown to be an accurate method of predicting performance of the SDP. The SDP was successful at distributing dredge material across the placement site; however, further research is warranted to better quantify performance metrics.

Abstract:
This policy brief aims to dismantle four pervasive assumptions hindering effective Monitoring and Evaluation (M&amp;E) in the field of Preventing/Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE). Drawing from the Dutch experience and international experience, the brief illuminates how these assumptions can be addressed to improve policy outcomes. It delves into challenges surrounding the measurability of prevention and non-events, the abstraction of key concepts, political sensitivities, and perceived time constraints. Offering pragmatic solutions, the Dutch Toolkit for Evidence-Based Work to Prevent Radicalisation is presented as a case study, demonstrating how structured formats and evidence-based methodologies can enhance the efficiency and credibility of M&amp;E practices. The brief concludes with five actionable recommendations aimed at policymakers, urging the adoption of nuanced M&amp;E approaches, transparency, SMART indicators, optimised resource allocation, and evidence-based decision-making.

Abstract:
This paper explores the ideological use and limited implementation of federalism in East Central Europe from 1831 to 1939, a region shaped by diverse national identities and the dominance of imperial powers. Federalism, widely promoted as a potential solution for unifying multiethnic societies under a shared political framework, primarily served as a rhetorical device rather than a practical model for governance. National movements and emerging states leveraged federalist ideas as tools to legitimize territorial claims, secure political authority, and establish cultural autonomy from imperial structures. However, the paper argues that national leaders consistently subordinated federalist principles to the pragmatic demands of nation-building, which prioritized ethnic and linguistic homogeneity. Despite federalism’s appeal as an inclusive model, its adaptation in East Central Europe was constrained by nationalist agendas, anti-imperial sentiments, and the instrumentalization of ideology for geopolitical maneuvering. This study highlights how federalist discourse in East Central Europe evolved from a utopian concept into an element of Realpolitik, illuminating broader tensions between ideology and practical governance in the region's history.

Rogo, Khama, and Ann Leonard. Unsafe Abortion in Kenya: Findings from Eight Studies. Population Council, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1996.1022.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the most topical areas in reproductive health today is the consequences of induced and often unsafe abortion. Safe motherhood initiatives continue to highlight the contribution of unsafe abortion to the persistent high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa. In some countries, unsafe abortion is responsible for up to half of all maternal mortality and morbidity, with adolescents constituting a significant proportion of those procuring unsafe abortions. In Kenya, concern about the problem of incomplete and septic abortion has increased, particularly on the part of service providers who must treat women suffering from the complications of poorly performed procedures. Debate about what can be done to reduce the negative consequences of unsafe abortion ranges from highly emotional arguments to pragmatic policies and programs. In 1998, in response to requests for assistance from Kenyan policymakers, the Population Council embarked on a four-year collaborative program to document the magnitude and nature of the problem of unsafe abortion. With assistance from the Population Council, researchers from the Centre for the Study of Adolescence designed and implemented a package of eight studies. This monograph provides a summary of the findings of these studies.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper aims to be a useful analytical and managerial support tool for the debt practitioners and for the academia. It provides an appropriate approach for developing countries, and offers a detailed and systematic blueprint in how to establishing an efficient Debt Management Office. This paper differentiates from other papers published on the subject at least in two aspects. The first one is the political relevance that is given to the decision making process as far as responsibility for fixing a global macroeconomic public debt management strategy is concerned. The second is that the approach is a functional analysis, that is, there is no need to have a specific structure for the debt office in order to analyse who and where the functions are carried out. The paper gives a clear and well-defined list of tasks for each one of the functions, and this leads to clear and structured functional responsibilities for the implementation of the back, middle and front office working organization structure. This paper is composed of five sections. The first one is an introduction to the concept of Effective Debt Management Functions. The second and the third are the description of the functions: the second for the Executive Functions, which are not necessarily a Debt Management Office (DMO) responsibility, and the third to the Operational Functions, which are the direct DMO responsibilities. The fourth section is devoted to the responsibilities that a DMO can be accountable for, that may vary from country to country. The last section addresses major issues on debt management, stressing the pragmatic analysis that the functional approach provides. There are two Annexes with open-ended lists of tasks for each one of the Effective Debt Management Functions.

Abstract:
Information security and associated vulnerabilities have long been a pressing challenge, from the fundamental scientific backstage to the frontline across the most diverse sectors of society. At the tip of the iceberg of this problem, the citizens immediately feel that the reservation of privacy and the degradation of the quality and security of the information and communication on which they depend for the day-to-day activities, already of crucial relevance, are at stake. Naturally though, the challenges do not end there. There is a whole infrastructure for storing information, processing and communication, whose security and reliability depend on key sectors gearing modern society – such as emergency communication systems (medical, civil and environmental protection, among others), transportation and geographic information, the financial communications systems at the backbone of day-to-day transactions, the information and telecommunications systems in general. And crucially the entire defence ecosystem that in essence is a stalwart in preventing our civilisation to self-annihilate in full fulfilment of the second principle of thermodynamics. The relevance of the problem further encompasses the preservation of crucial values such as the right to information, security and integrity of democratic processes, internal administration, justice, defence and sovereignty, ranging from the well-being of the citizen to the security of the nation and beyond. In the present communication, we take a look at how to scientifically and technically empower society to address these challenges, with the hope and pragmatism enabled by our emerging pathways in information physics and complexity. Edging beyond classical and quantum frontiers and their vulnerabilities to unveil new principles, methodologies and technologies at the core of the next generation system dynamic intelligence and security. To illustrate the concepts and tools, rather than going down the road of engineered systems that we can ultimately control, we take aim at the bewildering complexity of nature, deciphering new secrets in the mathematical codex underlying its complex coevolutionary phenomena that so heavily impact our lives, and ultimately bringing out novel insights, methods and technologies that propel information physics and security beyond quantum frontiers.
