Telepathology systems were developed to allow pathologists to perform remote diagnosis and consultations. These systems have the following essential components; a remote controlled microscope, a video processing system, a communication link, and a user interface and display. This thesis defines a telepathology communication system based on the Internet network. The basic telepathology system problems were addressed: (1) Determining available network bandwidth, (2) Investigating video image compression, (3) Developing a user interface and display. This thesis presents an analytical model of a cross-layer communication system to enable improvement in the Transport Control Protocol (rCP) over mixed wired and wireless Internet. The focus is on the quantitative performance evaluation of the interactions between TCP and a hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest protocol (HARQ) in the link layer (LL) with a finite buffer size. TCP evolution is described and a review of the different approaches to im/ r prove its performance is given. A survey of the most relevant TCP analytical proposals is also provided. In this thesis study, it is aimed to improve the performance of an Internet-based teleoperation system enabling the remote operation of a 6 DOF industrial robot. In order to improve the safety and efficiency of the teleoperation, stability and synchronization (hand-eye coordination) are considered. The selected communication medium between the human operator and remote robot is the Internet. The variable time delays and nondeterministic characteristics of the Internet may lead to instability of the teleoperation system. Considering the disturbing effects of the Internet onto the transmission,

Abstract:
Over the past decade there has been a growing demand for interactive multimedia applications deployed over public IP networks. To achieve acceptable Quality of Ser- vice (QoS) without significantly modifying the existing infrastructure, the end-to-end applications need to optimize their behavior and adapt according to network char- acteristics. Most existing application optimization techniques are based on reactive strategies, i.e. reacting to occurrences of congestion. We propose the use of predic- tive control to address the problem in an anticipatory manner. This research deals with develop

<p>TCP Emulation at Receivers (TEAR) is a TCP-friendly protocol that has been proposed for real-time multimedia flow control. Most best-effort traffic on the Internet is well-served by TCP, the dominant transport protocol. However, many applications with real-time constraints, such as multimedia streaming find TCP's response to congestion quite severe and too drastic to deliver acceptable end-user quality. TEAR was designed in order to provide smoothly varying rate changes for such applications while being friendly to competing TCP flows. In this thesis, weevaluate and verify TEAR's performanc

Abstract:
An increasing number of network applications use reliable transport protocols. Applications with constant data transmission recover from loss without major performance disruption, however, applications that send data sporadically, in small packets, also called thin-streams, experience frequently high latencies due to 'Bufferbloat', that reduce the application performance. Active Queue Management mechanisms were proposed to dynamically manage the queues in routers by dropping packets early and reduce these, hence reducing latency. While their deployment to the internet remains an open issue, th
