Full textThis archaeological and historical study attempts to renew the sociological approach to study of village aristocracy by studying fortified dwellings, and in particular fortified manors. The study begins by an inventory of all of the medieval fortresses in the French Burgundian Côte d'Or region attested to by archive texts or archaeological remains, all-in-all 640 sites. This inventory, presented in the form of monographs which can be consulted on CD-Rom, gives the opportunity to study the evolution of these sites, the site patterns and the architectural elements. The study of the archive texts reveals the standing of the inhabitants. In the XIIIth, the builders of these fortified dwellings are sometimes milites castri but more often than not the youngest sons of lords of the manor, or non-tenant lords (seigneurs alleutiers). Theoretically they should hold their fortified dwelling by grant of the lord-high-justice, but in practice the fortified dwelling often escapes all control. The lords of each village take advantage of the war and the change in dynastie of 1360 in order to fortify their homes and to free themselves from control of the justiciary. The dukes attempt to enforce recognition of their preeminence in the granting of licence to crenellate and feudal duties, but their power will only become real from the XVth century. The emplacement of the fortified dwelling in relation to the village illustrates the role of the local lord and its evolution. In the XIIIth the dwelling is built close by and looking onto the village. From the XIVth onwards the dwelling is built further from the village and looking towards the south or the east. At the same time, the lords become less present in their rural homes. After the war, they reorganise their holdings and entrust them to managers. Lordship is no longer a contract of mutual assistance between a village community and its defender ; it becomes a simple structure of income from taxes

Full textIn Bolivia, the second part of the twentieth century has been punctuated by multiple upheavals (demographic transition, agrarian revolution, closing-down of mines) with numerous impacts on the population growth and distribution. In the Occidente (West) - cold and arid areas of the Andes - the countryside has been emptied and the historical cities reinforced. In the Oriente (East) - hoy and humid valleys and plains - agricultural colonisation, together with the appearance of new settlements, present contrasting dynamics. The department of Tarija - in the Southeast of the country - is not only a privileged observatory of these changes, but also presents its own migratory movements due to its proximity with Argentina and the discovery of gas deposits. Using new migartion surveys carried out in rural and urban areas during the 2001-2002 period, this research aims to study the causes and consequences of the recent evolution of settlement patterns, in the Occidente and in the Oriente

Full textOn the day of the WW II victory, on may 8th, 1945, instead of a nationalist uprising in Guelma, there was a reaction of a subversive nature on the part of the French, triggered by their fear of being outnumbered by the Muslims and their opposition to the reforms of the government. It took the form of a massacre of Muslims and a terrorist policy, with the complicity of the civil authorities and police of the Constantine département. This subversive reaction in a rural and predominantly Muslim département, prefigured that of the OAS in the Algerian cities in 1960-1962, at the end of the Algerian War. It was a challenge to the metropolitan and French Algerian authorities and their reforms. Illegal institutions replaced legal ones. French militiamen killed large numbers of Muslims, officially declared missing. Between 1945 and 1954, under pressure from the settlers, the facts were shrouded by reasons of state, from the bottom to the top of the state apparatus. The French governments of the Quatrième République agreed to keep those violent and illegal acts secret, in the hope of saving their reform policies in Algeria, when the world was entering a period of decolonisation

Full textThis PHD analyzes the consequences of the transformation of the French West Indies colonies into “departements”. It is focused on political history and centered on the functioning of the State Administration from a wide and cross-cultural point of view, taking into account the interactions between the State Administration and local players. This PHD is at the crossroads of many historiographic fields such as Colonial History or Cold War History. The originality of this PHD lies in the various scales that it encompasses, making it possible to compare local, regional and world issues over forty years, between the end of War World II and the beginning of the decentralization process in France. The purpose of this PHD is to assess the set of internal and external factors inside the State Administration which have an influence on the chronology of the “departementalization” process. It is also to typify the management of overseas French West Indies initiated by the French state
