In this paper, a method for describing 2D shape characteristic is presented. The similarity between any two shapes is measured by the Euclidian distance between their corresponding new shape descriptors. Accordingly, a new classification and retrieval technique is proposed by comparing the similarity between two shapes. To evaluate the proposed method, we applied it on the benchmark data set MPEG-7-PartB for shape classification and retrieval. The results show that the V-descriptor has higher efficiency than Zernike moment, pseudo Zernike moment, the central moment and moment invariants.

Damage assessment of composite materials is crucial for health monitoring of engineering structures. It is particularly important to detect damage invisible to the human eye caused by low speed impact. Optical non-contact sensing techniques enable full-field measurements from structural responses. However, damage is generally associated with its local effect on deformation and strain patterns while full-field measured data is highly information redundant. It is possible to apply image processing techniques [1, 2] to extract succinct and efficient features, or attributes, from full-field data.

While multiple criteria to quantify gait instability exist, some limitations hinder their computation during realistic walking conditions. A descriptor, computed as the distance between the center of mass of the body and the minimal moment axis ( d C O M − Δ ) , has been proposed recently. This present study aims at characterizing the behavior of the mentioned descriptor in a population at a higher risk of falls. Five individuals with transfemoral amputation and 14 healthy individuals were involved in an experiment composed of motion capture and force plates acquisition during overground walki

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose an interpolation-based projection framework for model reduction of quadratic-bilinear systems. The approach constructs projection matrices from the bilinear part of the original quadratic-bilinear descriptor system and uses these matrices to project the original system. Design/methodology/approach The projection matrices are constructed by viewing the bilinear system as a linear parametric system, where the input associated with the bilinear part is treated as a parameter. The advantage of this approach is that the projection matrices can be cons

Computational approaches to the disulphide bonding state and its connectivity pattern prediction are based on various descriptors. One descriptor is the amino acid sequence motifs flanking the cysteine residue motifs. Despite the existence of disulphide bonding information in many databases and applications, there is no complete reference and motif query available at the moment. Cysteine motif database (CMD) is the first online resource that stores all cysteine residues, their flanking motifs with their secondary structure, and propensity values assignment derived from the laboratory data. This paper proposes a novel method called Wavelet-Sparse-Matrix (WSM) to extract the spatial features of 2-D objects for classifying objects that have subtle differences. The differences between these objects are present in the spatial orientations of the objects, or in the local positions of points on the contours of the objects. The separable wavelets are able to distinguish these differences and to separate them into three sparse subpatterns. Sparse matrix technique has the ability to rearrange nonzero elements in a sparse matrix by moving them as close together as possible. WSM method is a

Materials and methods. Pyrrolo- and pyridoquinolinecarboxamides with proven diuretic activity were involved in the study. Molecular descriptors were calculated using HyperChem and GRAGON software, and QSAR models were built using BuildQSAR software. For receptor-oriented flexible docking, the Autodock 4.2 software package was used.
Results. Multivariate linear QSAR models were built on two datasets of

Abstract. The theory of scale similarity and breakdown coefficients is applied here to intermittent rainfall data consisting of time series and spatial rain fields. The probability distributions (pdf) of the logarithm of the breakdown coefficients are the principal descriptor used. Rain fields are distinguished as being either multiscaling or multiaffine depending on whether the pdfs of breakdown coefficients are scale similar or scale dependent, respectively. Parameter estimation techniques are developed which are applicable to both multiscaling and multiaffine fields. The scale parameter (wi
