Abstract:
Bots have become critical for managing online communities on platforms, especially to match the increasing technical sophistication of online harms. However, community leaders often adoptthird-party bots, creating room for misalignment in their assumptions, expectations, and understandings (i.e., their technological frames) about them. On platforms where sharing bots can be extremely valuable, how community leaders can revise their frames about bots to more effectively adopt them is unclear. In this work, we conducted a qualitative interview study with 16 community leaders on Discord examining how they adopt third-party bots. We found that participants addressed challenges stemming from uncertainties about a bot's security, reliability, and fit through emergent social ecosystems. Formal and informal opportunities to discuss bots with others across communities enabled participants to revise their technological frames over time, closing gaps in bot-specific skills and knowledge. This social process of learning shifted participants' perspectives of the labor of bot adoption into something that was satisfying and fun, underscoring the value of collaborative and communal approaches to adopting bots. Finally, by shaping participants' mental models of the nature, value, and use of bots, social ecosystems also raise some practical tensions in how they support user creativity and customization in third-party bot use. Together, the social nature of adopting third-party bots in our interviews offers insight into how we can better support the sharing of valuable user-facing tools across online communities.

Bonechi, Simone. "Development of an Automated Moderator for Deliberative Events." Electronics 13, no. 3 (2024): 544. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/electronics13030544.

Full text
Abstract:
Online communication platforms have revolutionized interpersonal interactions by transcending geographical barriers. While facilitating connectivity, these platforms have introduced challenges such as overcoming linguistic differences and preventing spam and offensive content diffusion. This is particularly pertinent in the context of deliberative events, where online platforms could be used to extend the inclusion of citizens in democratic decision-making. In traditional deliberative events, human moderators and translators were used to facilitate conversation; however, the need for these figures imposed a limit on both the number of deliberative events that could be organized and the number of participants. In response, this paper proposes an automated moderator for deliberative events. The moderator is developed in Python for the online communication platform Discord and can be used, thanks to the integrated AI (Artificial Intelligence) tools, to automatically manage conversation agendas, prevent spam and inappropriate language, analyze the sentiment of the conversation, and translate messages into multiple languages. In particular, three classifiers, based on a pre-trained BERT (Bidirection Encoder Representations from Transformers), were fine-tuned for spam detection, toxic comments classification, and sentiment analysis. These allow the moderator to automatically detect and remove spam and offensive messages in different languages, send warnings to users, alert administrators, and, after repeated warnings, impose bans. Additionally, a built-in translator, based on Meta’s No Language Left Behind NLLB model, translates messages into five languages (Italian, English, French, German, and Polish). The developed bot was tested in a simulated deliberative event on a Discord server, demonstrating its ability to manage conversations and prevent linguistic abuse.

Journal of Medical Internet Research 27 (April 30, 2025): e63687. https://doi.org/10.2196/63687.

Abstract:
Historically, recruiting research participants through social media facilitated access to people who use opioids, capturing a range of drug use behaviors. The current rapidly changing online landscape, however, casts doubt on social media’s continued usefulness for study recruitment. In this viewpoint paper, we assessed social media recruitment for people who use opioids and described challenges and potential solutions for effective recruitment. As part of a study on barriers to harm reduction health services, we recruited people who use opioids in New York City to complete a REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture; Vanderbilt University) internet-based survey using Meta (Facebook and Instagram), X (formerly known as Twitter), Reddit, and Discord. Eligible participants must have reported using opioids (heroin, prescription opioids, or fentanyl) for nonprescription purposes in the past 90 days and live or work in New York City. Data collection took place from August 2023 to November 2023. Including study purpose, compensation, and inclusion criteria caused Meta’s social media platforms and X to flag our ads as “discriminatory” and “spreading false information.” Listing incentives increased bot traffic across all platforms despite bot prevention activities (eg, reCAPTCHA and counting items in an image). We instituted a rigorous post hoc data cleaning protocol (eg, investigating duplicate IP addresses, participants reporting use of a fictitious drug, invalid ZIP codes, and improbable drug use behaviors) to identify bot submissions and repeat participants. Participants received a US $20 gift card if still deemed eligible after post hoc data inspection. There were 2560 submissions, 93.2% (n=2387) of which were determined to be from bots or malicious responders. Of these, 23.9% (n=571) showed evidence of a duplicate IP or email address, 45.9% (n=1095) reported consuming a fictitious drug, 15.8% (n=378) provided an invalid ZIP code, and 9.4% (n=225) reported improbable drug use behaviors. The majority of responses deemed legitimate (n=173) were collected from Meta (n=79, 45.7%) and Reddit (n=48, 27.8%). X’s ads were the most expensive (US $1.96/click) and yielded the fewest participants (3 completed surveys). Social media recruitment of hidden populations is challenging but not impossible. Rigorous data collection protocols and post hoc data inspection are necessary to ensure the validity of findings. These methods may counter previous best practices for researching stigmatized behaviors.

Abstract:
The rapid integration of AI technologies in education necessitates understanding their potential effects on language acquisition and proficiency, particularly in writing—a critical skill for EFL learners. This study aimed to investigate the types of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots and scrutinize the students' perceptions about the impact of AI chatbots on their vocabulary and grammar in EFL writing. Using a mixed method, this study involved 100 undergraduate English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students from five universities in Indonesia, highlighting the various AI chatbots they employed in their digital activities. Data collection consisted of questionnaires, interviews, and observation sheets which were analyzed using quantitative descriptive statistics and qualitative thematic analysis. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Bing Chat, Ernie, Character AI, Discord Bot, Wren, and Ginger emerged as the most widely used chatbots among the students, with reasons such as helpfulness, work simplification, skill and knowledge transfer, and ease of use serving as the primary motivations for their use. The findings revealed that a significant majority of students experienced substantial improvements in their vocabulary range, syntactic variety, and writing quality when using these AI chatbots. They also unanimously reported AI chatbots had a major positive impact on their language proficiency, particularly in the areas of vocabulary and grammar used in writing. The results of this research suggest that incorporating AI chatbots can be advantageous for improving the writing skills of EFL students. The study also addressed its shortcomings and offered recommendations for future research.

Abstract:
Various Gin Rummy strategy guides provide heuristics for human players to improve their gameplay. Often these heuristics are either conflicting or contain ambiguity that limits their applicability, especially for discard and end-of-game decisions. This paper describes an approach to analyzing the machine learning capabilities of a Gin Rummy agent to help resolve these conflicts and ambiguities. There are three main decision points in the game: when to draw from the discard pile, which card to discard from the player's hand, and when to knock. The agent us-es a learning approach to estimate the expected utility for discards. An analysis of these utility values provides in-sight into resolving ambiguities in tips for discard decisions in human play. The agent’s end-of-game, or knocking, strategy was derived using Monte Carlo Counterfactual regret minimization (MCCFR). This approach was applied to estimate Nash equilibrium knocking strategies under different rules of the game. The analysis suggests that conflicts in the end-of-game playing tips are due in part to different rules used in common Gin Rummy variants.

Abstract:
Quantum discord is a more general measure of quantum correlations than entanglement and has been proposed as a resource in certain quantum information processing tasks. The computation of discord is mostly confined to two-qubit systems for which an analytical calculational scheme is available. The utilization of quantum correlations in quantum information-based applications is limited by the problem of decoherence, i.e., the loss of coherence due to the inevitable interaction of a quantum system with its environment. The dynamics of quantum correlations due to decoherence may be studied in the Kraus operator formalism for different types of quantum channels representing system-environment interactions. In this review, we describe the salient features of the dynamics of classical and quantum correlations in a two-qubit system under Markovian (memoryless) time evolution. The two-qubit state considered is described by the reduced density matrix obtained from the ground state of a spin model. The models considered include the transverse-field XY model in one dimension, a special case of which is the transverse-field Ising model, and the XXZ spin chain. The quantum channels studied include the amplitude damping, bit-flip, bit-phase-flip and phase-flip channels. The Kraus operator formalism is briefly introduced and the origins of different types of dynamics discussed. One can identify appropriate quantities associated with the dynamics of quantum correlations which provide signatures of quantum phase transitions in the spin models. Experimental observations of the different types of dynamics are also mentioned.

Abstract:
There is a well established relationship between marital discord and individual psychopathology in family members. This paper reviews evidence relating to patterns of marital interaction related to the co-occurrence of marital discord and three common psychological disorders: depression, alcohol abuse, and childhood conduct disorders. The effects of behavioural marital therapy (BMT) on dysfunctional marital interaction in such cases, and the impact of BMT on individuals' psychological disorders, are evaluated. It is concluded that BMT is often a useful component of treatment in each disorder reviewed. Further it is argued that it is important routinely to assess the relationship context in which these disorders occur. Finally, some of the difficulties and limitations of the application of BMT in cases where the presenting problem is an individual psychopathology are considered.

Abstract:
This paper presents a post-processing algorithm for a true random number generator (TRNG). Once the randomness of security key generation deteriorates for any reason, the entire chain of the security system can be compromised, increasing the odds of it being exploited by an attacker to retrieve information. Considering the change in the distribution of the RNG output sequence due to variations in the operating environment or the occurrence of aging phenomena in silicon-integrated circuits, a robust post-processing algorithm must be applied to an intrinsic TRNG to ensure the sustainability of a security system. Targeting high-level cryptography systems complying with the NIST 800-22a requirements, the proposed algorithm significantly improves the Hamming weight (HW) and successfully passes the NIST criteria while sacrificing approximately 20% of the entire number of available bits. The proposed algorithm improves the randomness of the TRNG through a sequential cell- and bit-level discarding technique, a cell-discard method, and focuses on improving the overall HW of the TRNG while the subsequent bit- discard method performs a Chi-square (χ2) test. To prove the concept, we programmed the proposed algorithm in a FPGA and configured the output of the manufactured TRNG chip to be post-processed and stored into on-board memory in real time. For five different ring-oscillator-based TRNG prototypes (fully custom designed in the 65 nm CMOS process), the failed intrinsic TRNG output sequences were respectively post-processed, resulting in all surpassing the NIST 800-22a requirements.

Abstract:
This paper describes a fast hand strength estimation mod-el for the game of Gin Rummy. The algorithm is computationally inexpensive, and it incorporates not only cards in the player’s hand but also cards known to be in the opponent’s hand, cards in the discard pile, and the current game stage. This algorithm is used in conjunction with counterfactual regret (CFR) minimization to develop a gin rummy bot. CFR strategies were developed for the knocking strategies. The hand strength estimation algorithm was used to select a discard that balances the goals of maximizing the utility of the player’s hand and minimizing the likelihood that a card will be useful to the opponent. A study of the parameterization of this estimation algorithm demonstrates the soundness of approach as well as good performance under a wide range of parameter values.

Abstract:
Abstract Examining morphological and anatomical characters, eight bloom-forming Ulva species were identified from La Paz Bay, Gulf of California, Mexico. However, DNA sequencing, using a multi-gene approach (rbcL, ITS2 and tufA) revealed that, of the eight species, four species were genetically distinct, none of which belonged to the species they would have been ascribed based on morpho-anatomical observations. The Ulva lactuca and Ulva rigida morphotypes (blades two cells thick, unbranched, attached by a small discoid holdfast) corresponded to Ulva ohnoi; the Ulva intestinalis morphotype (tubular and smooth thallus, one cell thick) corresponded to Ulva tepida; the Ulva clathrata and Ulva flexuosa morphotypes (tubular to slightly compressed thallus) corresponded to Ulva torta. The Ulva acanthophora morphotype (more or less tubular, profusely branched) did not correspond molecularly to any currently described species. Attempts to sequence the remaining two species, morpho-anatomically identified as Ulva lobata and Ulva nematoidea, were unsuccessful. This study similarly highlights the high degree of cryptic diversity in the genus Ulva, provides a nomenclature adjustment for several species of the genus Ulva from northwestern Mexico and is the first to report U. ohnoi, U. tepida and U. torta for the region.

Abstract:
We study the dynamics of the pairwise quantum discord (QD), classical correlation (CC), and entanglement of formation (EOF) for the three-qubit W-class state |W>_{123}=\frac 12(|100>_{123}+|010>_{123}+\sqrt{2}|001>_{123}) under the influence of various Markovian noises by analytically solving the master equation in the Lindblad form. Through numerical analysis, we find that EOF decreases asymptotically to zero with time for the dephasing noise, but it undergoes sudden death for the bit-flip noise, the isotropic noise, as well as the dissipative and noisy environments. Moreover, QD decays to zero in an asymptotical way for all the noises we investigated. Thus, when the W-class state |W>_{123} is subject to the above Markovian noises, QD is more robust than EOF against decoherence excluding the phase-flip noise, implying that QD is more useful than entanglement to characterize the quantum correlation. We also find a remarkable character for the CC in the presence of the phase-flip noise, i.e., CC displays the behavior of sudden transition and then keeps constant permanently, but the corresponding QD just exhibits a very small sudden change. Furthermore, we verify the monogamic relation between the pairwise QD and EOF of the W-class state.

Abstract:
Abstract BACKGROUND Ependymomas (EPN) constitute 10% of pediatric brain tumors. WHO classification identified 10 molecular subtypes, with ZFTA fusion-driven supratentorial tumors (ST-ZFTA) and posterior fossa group A (PFA) being amongst the most aggressive ones. Current therapeutic success relies on local treatments, emphasizing the urgent need for novel targets. Epigenetic dysregulation is a major contributor to EPN aggressiveness. Bromodomain and extra-terminal domain (BET) proteins are transcriptional mediators involved in proto-oncogene transcription, thereby representing promising targets in cancer therapy. As the BET protein BRD4 co-regulates ZFTA-RELA fusion-mediated aberrant transcription, BET inhibitors emerge as novel targeted therapy approach in ST-ZFTA. METHODS Initial assessments encompassed primary, patient-derived (n=9) cell models representing ST-ZFTA and PFA EPN. RNA sequencing of two ZFTA-RELA models was performed, using DGE and GSEA analyses to discern altered pathways following BET-inhibition. On functional level, we investigated sensitivity towards BET-inhibition using cell viability, clone- and sphere formation assays, as well as Western blot and qPCR after treatment. Additionally, anti-tumor effects in genetically engineered cerebral organoids were assessed. RESULTS First investigations showed elevated BRD2 and BRD4 levels in ST-ZFTA compared to PFA models. Accordingly, treatment with BET inhibitors resulted in reduced survival and cell cycle arrest, evidenced by cell viability and clone formation assays, along with increased p21 and cleaved PARP levels in Western blot analyses. RNA sequencing revealed altered pathways associated with cell-cycle regulation and senescence following BET inhibition, supported by downregulation of the telomerase subunit TERT and genes of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype. Additionally, BET inhibitors exhibited synergistic effects with EZH2- and PARP inhibitors primarily in ZFTA-RELA cell lines, as well as decreased tumor volumes in ZFTA-RELA-driven cerebral organoids. CONCLUSIONS Summarizing, we show drastic effects of BET-inhibition in ZFTA-RELA EPN. Subsequently, the influence of Bromodomain inhibition on stemness and senescence, particularly combined with radio- and chemotherapy will be investigated.

Abstract:
Smart cities necessitate ultra-secure and scalable communication frameworks to manage billions of interconnected IoT devices, particularly in the face of the emerging quantum computing threats. This paper proposes the QESIF, a novel Quantum-Enhanced Secure IoT Framework that integrates Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) with classical IoT infrastructures via a hybrid protocol stack and a quantum-aware intrusion detection system (Q-IDS). The QESIF achieves high resilience against eavesdropping by monitoring quantum bit error rate (QBER) and leveraging entropy-weighted key generation. The simulation results, conducted using datasets TON IoT, Edge-IIoTset, and Bot-IoT, demonstrate the effectiveness of the QESIF. The framework records an average QBER of 0.0103 under clean channels and discards over 95% of the compromised keys in adversarial settings. It achieves Attack Detection Rates (ADRs) of 98.1%, 98.7%, and 98.3% across the three datasets, outperforming the baselines by 4–9%. Moreover, the QESIF delivers the lowest average latency of 20.3 ms and the highest throughput of 868 kbit/s in clean scenarios while maintaining energy efficiency with 13.4 mJ per session.

One way to improve upon the detection limits for digital images involves increasing the number of counts per pixel. Eight bits, or 1 byte (256 counts), per pixel is most commonly used for monochrome optical, electron and x-ray imaging. This number is well matched to the human eye which can discern approximately 128 gray values, while photographic and some laser printer outputs have the capability of displaying nearly 256 gray values. When the counts exceed 8 bits/pixel the recorded image file size will likely double to 16 bits/pixel. With the better imaging detection limits we are faced with the technical problem of how to view more than 256 gray levels.

AbstractWhat happens when we take the big picture to its spatial zenith and examine histories of science from the vantage point of outer space? The answer is somewhat messy. The satellite era launched alongside Sputnik 1 in 1957 facilitated the extension of scientific order and control through technologies of planetary surveillance. Yet regimes of disorder and fragmentation that emerged through entanglements of anthropogenic and more-than-human natural forces at the planetary periphery prompt a reconsideration of the limits of that control. Enrolling the methodologies of envirotech and discard studies scholarship invites a generatively messy, vertical and extra-planetary view of scientific practices and politics from the ground up and back again, and a glimpse at the historiographical possibilities that emerge from an embrace of systemic disorder.

Abstract:
Abstract Harvesting wild seaweeds has a long history and is still relevant today, even though aquaculture now supplies >96% of global seaweed production. Current wild harvests mostly target canopy-forming kelp, rockweed and red macroalgae that provide important ecosystem roles, including primary production, carbon storage, nutrient cycling, habitat provision, biodiversity and fisheries support. Harvest methods range from selective hand-cutting to bottom trawling. Resulting ecosystem impacts depend on extraction method and scale, ranging from changes in primary production to habitat disruption, fragmentation, food-web alterations and bycatch of non-target species. Current management often aims for sustainable harvesting in a single-species context, although some agencies acknowledge the wider ecosystem structure, functions and services seaweeds provide. We outline potential ecosystem-based management approaches that would help sustain productive and diverse seaweed-based ecosystems. These include maintaining high canopy biomass, recovery potential, habitat structure and connectivity, limiting bycatch and discards, while incorporating seasonal closures and harvest-exclusion zones into spatial management plans. Other sustainability considerations concern monitoring, enforcement and certification standards, a shift to aquaculture, and addressing cumulative human impacts, invasive species and climate change. Our review provides a concise overview on how to define and operationalize ecosystem-based management of seaweed harvesting that can inform ongoing management and conservation efforts.

Abstract:
Summaryβ1-tubulin is the main constituent of the platelet marginal band and studies with deficient mice showed that it maintains discoid shape and it is required for normal platelet formation. TUBB1 Q43P polymorphism is associated with decreased β1-tubulin expression, diminished platelet reactivity, and partial loss of discoid shape in heterozygous carriers. However, to date no studies have been carried out on homozygous PP individuals. Our study included 19 subjects genotyped for TUBB1 Q43P polymorphism (4 QQ, 4 QP, and 2 PP). The two PP individuals were recruited after genotyping of 2073 individuals. Biochemical, microscopy, and molecular studies were performed. Real-time PCR showed ∼40% decrease in TUBB1 mRNA in the two PP individuals compared to four QQ subjects. Western blot analysis confirmed this reduction. Electron microscopy revealed a majority of normal discoid platelets in PP individuals, although platelets with loose, re-orientated or invaginated protofilaments, and an over-developed open canalicular system were observed. Such abnormalities were not observed in QQ subjects. Morphometric analyses showed no differences between PP and QQ individuals. Immunofluorescence confirmed the presence of a normal marginal band in a majority of platelets from PP subjects. Interestingly, both PP subjects had a 40% lower platelet count than QP and QQ. TUBB1 Q43P polymorphism in homozygosity mildly affects platelet ultrastructure and our data further suggest that high levels of β1-tubulin might not be critical to sustain platelet discoid shape.

While the compressed data cannot be reconstructed exactly to match the original numbers it will be shown that no statistically significant data will be lost. This compression scheme reduces storage requirements by eliminating the statistical variations in the data. The square root display of the data into 256 levels also enhances low concentration visibility since the brightness change per gray level is greatest at low concentrations.

Abstract:
Background: Patients seeking information and advice on treatment of scaphoid fractures unknowingly confront longstanding medical controversies surrounding the management of this condition. However, there are no studies specifically looking into the quality and reliability of online information on scaphoid fractures. Methods: We identified 44 unique websites for evaluation using the term “scaphoid fractures”. The websites were categorized by type and assessed using the DISCERN score, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria and the Health on the net (HON) code. Results: The majority of websites were commercial (n = 13) followed by academic (n = 12). Only seven of the websites were HON certified. The mean DISCERN score was 43.8. Only 4 websites scored 63 or above representing excellent quality with minimal shortcomings but 13 websites scored 38 or below representing poor or very poor quality. The mean JAMA benchmark criteria score was 2.2. The Governmental and Non-Profit Organizations category websites had the highest mean JAMA benchmark score. The websites that displayed the HON-code seal had higher mean DISCERN scores and higher mean JAMA benchmark scores compared to websites that did not display the seal. Conclusions: Good quality health information is certainly available on the Internet. However, it is not possible to predict with certainty which sites are of higher quality. We suggest clinicians should have a responsibility to educate their patients regarding the unregulated nature of medical information on the internet and proactively provide patients with educational resources and thus help them make smart and informed decisions.

Abstract:
Entanglement does not describe all quantum correlations and several authors have shown the need to go beyond entanglement when dealing with mixed states. Various different measures have sprung up in the literature, for a variety of reasons, to describe bipartite and multipartite quantum correlations; some are known under the collective name {\it quantum discord}. Yet, in the same sprit as the criteria for entanglement measures, there is no general mechanism that determines whether a measure of quantum and classical correlations is a proper measure of correlations. This is partially due to the fact that the answer is a bit muddy. In this article we attempt tackle this muddy topic by writing down several criteria for a ``good" measure of correlations. We breakup our list into \emph{necessary}, \emph{reasonable}, and \emph{debatable} conditions. We then proceed to prove several of these conditions for generalized measures of quantum correlations. However, not all conditions are met by all measures; we show this via several examples. The reasonable conditions are related to continuity of correlations, which has not been previously discussed. Continuity is an important quality if one wants to probe quantum correlations in the laboratory. We show that most types of quantum discord are continuous but none are continuous with respect to the measurement basis used for optimization.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to answer the questions: Can students discern the difference between oral histories digitized at archival quality (96 kHz/24-bit) versus CD-quality (44.1 kHz/16-bit)? and How important do they believe this difference is? Digitization of analog audio recordings has become the recommended best practice in preserving and making available oral histories. Additionally, well-accepted standards in performing this work are available. However, there is relatively little research that addresses if individuals can hear a qualitative difference in recordings made with best practices versus those that have not. Design/methodology/approach – In all, 53 individuals participated in the study, where they listened to three sets of oral histories and had to decide which was the archival-quality recording versus the CD-quality recording and mark their answer on a survey. Findings – Students could discern less than half of the time on average which was the archival quality versus the CD-quality recording. Further, after listening to the differences, they most often indicated the difference was “a little bit important”. Practical implications – This research does not suggest that archivists abandon well-established sound digitization practices that produce results that audio archivists (and those able to hear fine-grain audio differences) find superior. Rather, it does imply that additional work may be needed to train listeners to discern these fine-grain differences, and appreciate the highest-fidelity replication of original audio recordings. Originality/value – This research addresses a gap in the literature by connecting audio digitization practices to its impact on listener perception.

Local similarity computation between two sequences permits detecting all the relevant alignments present between subsequences thereof. A well-known dynamic programming algorithm works in time O(mn), m and n being the lengths of the subsequences. The algorithm is rather slow when applied over many sequence pairs. In this paper we present the first bit-parallel computation of the score matrix, for a simplified choice of scores. If the computer word has w bits, then the resulting algorithm works in O(mn log min (m, n, w)/w) time, achieving up to 8-fold speedups in practice. Some DNA comparison applications use precisely the simplified scores we handle, and thus our algorithm is directly applicable. In others, our method could be used as a raw filter to discard most of the strings, so the classical algorithm can be focused only on the substring pairs that can yield relevant results.

Abstract:
Objective: This review critically examines conceptual and methodological issues of outcome research designed to evaluate the efficacy of marital therapy (MT). Behavioural marital therapy (BMT), cognitively orientated marital therapy (COMT), emotionally focused marital therapy (EFMT), and insight-oriented marital therapy (IOMT) have provided evidence for efficacy. Method: The initial literature search involved the use of the MEDLINE and Psychlit CD-ROM data bases. A secondary literature search based on citations in articles discovered in the initial search was also conducted. Three broad categories involving the delineation of the client sample, study design considerations, and determination of treatment effects were addressed to investigate the quality of evidence concerning the efficacy of MT. Results: None of the 4 approaches has proven superiority in efficacy, and the research does not provide evidence for the superiority of any one approach in distinct types of marital discord. There is some evidence to indicate that future outcome research should avoid the use of “waiting list control groups,” since their use appears to be neither ethical nor humane in marital discord research. Conclusions: The authors suggest that the concept of treatment efficiency may be more clinically relevant to outcome research. A gold standard for “efficiency” would suggest that a marital therapy approach should produce subjective and objective improvement in 50% of eligible couples, and this improvement should be maintained in half of these couples at the one-year follow-up assessment. This standard would be comparable to the data on the 4 effective approaches described in this review.

The proposed I-TDC exploits a clock-free configuration so as to discard clock-related dynamic power consumption and some notorious issues such as skew, glitch, and synchronization. It consists of a one-dimensional (1D) flash TDC to generate coarse-control codes and an integrator with a peak detection and hold (PDH) circuit to produce fine-control codes. A thermometer-to-binary converter is added to the 1D flash TDC, yielding four-bit coarse codes so that the measured detection range can be represented by nine-bit digital codes in total. Test chips of the proposed I-TDC demonstrate the measured results of the 53 dB dynamic range, i.e., the maximum detection range of 33.6 m and the minimum range of 7.5 cm. The chip core occupies the area of 0.14 × 1.4 mm2, with the power dissipation of 1.6 mW from a single 1.2-V supply.
