Full textThis thesis is part of that field of ethnological studies which concerns the transnational movements of the intangible cultural heritage. It deals with the appropriation of the djembé, a West African drum, by Quebec society. Beginning with a multidisciplinary approach which draws on ethnology, history and ethnomusicology, this thesis adds to our knowledge regarding music making in Quebec and to the research which seeks to understand how new forms of intangible cultural heritage are created at the local level within a global context. The study of the transnational migration of the drum tells the story its evolution, along with the recontextualization and the adaptation of playing styles and the transformations of its Mandinka repertoire in Quebec. Following is a Quebec genealogy relating to the manner in which the drum, beaten by hand, illustrates the global nature of traditions linked by percussive rhythms. Lastly, the ethnography of these practices and the oral research carried out in conjunction with recreational djembé players demonstrate that this cultural activity is, first and foremost, the expression of a form of “social corporeality, ” that is, the construction of, new, albeit transitory, socio-musical entities. Synchronizing the bodies engaged in producing the beat and the rhythm requires as well developing a mind set so as to build a heightened presence of belonging to the group. Furthermore, this drumming activity appears at various social events in addition to those focusing on music. The potential, found in djembé playing, to create a collective experience through the synchronizing of bodies is used for relieving stress in recreational contexts, for teambuilding in the workplace, for motivating youth to persevere in their studies at both primary and secondary levels and, last but not least, in opening new channels for communication with autistic children or those showing behavioural problems at school.

Full textBien qu'aujourd'hui le Québec soit reconnu pour son faible taux de fécondité, le Québec d'autrefois porte davantage l'étiquette de « terroir fertile ». Force est néanmoins de constater que l'image d'une population canadienne-française homogène caractérisée par un mode de reproduction spécifique fut davantage l'apanage des discours des élites (Gauvreau et coll. 2007; Gossage et Gauvreau, 1999) qu'une réalité typiquement canadienne-française (Lavigne, 1983; Bouchard et Lalou, 1993; Gossage, 1999b; Gauvreau et Gossage, 2001; Gauvreau et coll., 2007a; Marcoux, 2010). Cette thèse a pour objectif principal d'apporter une contribution à ce courant de recherche en élargissant l'espace-temps des études déjà menées sur la fécondité canadienne-française et québécoise dans le but d'illustrer les variations des régimes démographiques, et ce, avant le déclin généralisé de la fécondité dans les années 1920 (Gauvreau et coll., 2007a). Cette étude s'inscrit dans un courant de recherche qui vise à analyser les comportements de fécondité en tant que phénomène social complexe dont l'étude des principales transformations relève d'une analyse du changement social (Gaffield, 1991; Bouchard, 1996; Szreter, 1996; McQuillan 1999; Beaujot, 2000; Praz, 2005; Gauvreau et collab., 2007a; Marcoux et St-Hilaire, 2008; Marcoux, 2009; Olson et Thornton, 2011). À l'instar des travaux de Gaffield (1991) et de Praz (2005), elle recadre les comportements de fécondité au sein de la reproduction familiale prise au sens large et examine les mécanismes par le biais desquels s'opère l'articulation des sphères de production et de reproduction au sein des ménages. La thèse suggère que les ressorts de l'industrialisation ont constitué un vecteur de changement social au tournant du XXe siècle par le biais de la diversification des comportements de fécondité canadiens-français à l'échelle nord-américaine. À partir de l'étude approfondie de deux milieux urbains contrastés, elle montre que les Canadiens français ont des comportements reproducteurs différents d'un milieu à l'autre et que cette tendance s'accentue entre 1880-81 et 1910-11. Qui plus est, des différences sont également perceptibles au sein de chaque milieu entre les différentes sous-populations canadiennes-françaises. En recadrant les comportements de fécondité effective au sein de la reproduction familiale, la thèse met en évidence l'influence des rapports de genre et de génération sur l'articulation entre la production et la reproduction. La thèse révèle que ces rapports sont construits dans des conditions spécifiques qui permettent d'expliquer les variations des modes de reproduction. Enfin, l'analyse fait ressortir l'imbrication de l'influence des facteurs structurels et culturels sur les comportements reproducteurs et elle montre comment leur institutionnalisation diffère d'un milieu à l'autre. Au terme de l'exercice, cette thèse apporte un nouvel éclairage sur les modèles reproducteurs canadiens-français. Elle élargit l'espace-temps des principales études menées à ce jour en plus de contribuer à la réflexion épistémologique et méthodologique sur le sujet.

Full textThis research project aims to study the social function of the community kitchen in the northern context of Nunavik. Community kitchens can be viewed as a strategy for combatting food insecurity, but also as a gathering place for the community where participating members learn to cook, share experiences and socialize. While many scientific articles have dealt with this phenomenon in major Canadian cities and in South America, we decided to study the subject in the context of Inuit communities, thus making a contribution to the existing literature on this topic. We conducted a one-month empirical research in the Nunavik communities of Kangiqsualujjuaq and Kuujjuaq. Besides participating in the community kitchen, we conducted semi-directed interviews with its coordinators and its participants. The results show that the community kitchen in Nunavik is conducive to the creation of social relations among its members. The initiative can therefore be considered as a means of building and strengthening social bonds and social cohesion in Nunavik communities.

Full textThis thesis explores the motivations and practices of seasonal campers in the province of Quebec. Following Setha Low’s conceptualization of urban development and conflicts, the author examines the different ways in which campers, year after year, socially produce and construct space, time and sociability in their campground. The thesis is grounded in an ethnographic study completed during the summer of 2006 in two campgrounds located near the city of Montreal. The research results show that, far from being passive consumers, seasonal campers contribute actively to the spatial development of camping grounds and sites, to the organization and management of collective activities and to the creation of an environment which facilitates social exchange.

Full textThe origins, experiences and backgrounds of newcomers to the province of Quebec have been increasingly diverse since the 1960s. The challenges of this new reality has led to the use of intervention approaches in an intercultural context that favour the development of a greater cultural sensitivity and the appropriation of strategies to overcome obstacles to understanding and collaborating between social stakeholders and those assisted. However, these approaches do little or do not address the religious or spiritual aspect, which can sometimes be a major part of the newcomer’s identity. While Canadian policies emphasize the need to consider the religious dimension, the current dominant view of this reality is yet to marginalize this aspect of the identity of newcomers. This characterizes the reality of the Muslim population who is held in fear because of public prejudice. Considering the previous findings and given the limited data available on this subject in the city of Quebec, this qualitative research seeks to explore and obtain a better understanding of the perspectives of eight Muslim immigrants regarding whether or not their religious identity is taken into consideration during services they receive or have received in the past by social workers. Throughout the use of the intercultural systemic approach, the data collected during the interviews made it possible to highlight diverse experiences regarding the way in which the religious is received in context of the aid relationship. It also made it possible to describe the social and political context in which this project is situated and the impact that this context has on the daily experience of the respondents. Key words: immigration, islam, identity, social intervention, intercultural approach, systemicapproach, qualitative research.

Full textEn raison des préoccupations grandissantes du public pour la sécurité sanitaire des aliments et la protection de l’environnement, le gouvernement a considérablement accru la promotion de techniques de production durables comme la lutte intégrée. En 2014, un sondage a été administré auprès de 1 973 producteurs de fruits et légumes au Québec. Nous avons construit un modèle de régression logistique ordonné dont la variable dépendante est basée sur le potentiel de rationalisation des pesticides relatif à l’adoption des pratiques de lutte intégrée. Les résultats montrent que la méconnaissance (p< 0,0001), le faible niveau de souci environnemental (p=0.03), la vente directe au consommateur uniquement (p=0,01) et la production de légumes versus fruits sont négativement associés à l’adoption. Aussi, l’information reçue (p< 0,0001) et l’incitation à adopter d’un conseiller indépendant (p=0,001) sont positivement reliées à l’adoption. Les bases et principes qui régissent la lutte intégrée demeurent encore incompris et constituent un frein à l’adoption.
Because of growing public concerns about food safety and environmental protection, governments have increased the promotion of efficient and sustainable agriculture production techniques, such as Integrated Pest Management (IPM). In 2014, a mailed questionnaire about IPM adoption was distributed to a sample of 1,973 Quebec fruit and vegetable growers. We constructed an ordered logistic regression model whose dependent variable was the overall potential reduction in pesticide use calculated based on the number of IPM practices adopted. Results show that lack of IPM knowledge (p < 0.0001), low environmental concern (p = 0.03), selling produce directly to consumers (p = 0.01) and vegetable production, as opposed to fruit production, each significantly reduced IPM adoption. However, quantity of information (p < 0.0001) and encouragement by an independent crop advisor (p = 0.001) were positively associated with IPM adoption. Many producers are still poorly informed about IPM practices and principles, which is a barrier to adoption.

Full textSharing meals as a family is suggested as a public health measure because of its benefits on the health of children and teenagers. Recommendations for promoting family meals mainly derive from studies in health and nutrition. However, this thesis differs in that it studies family meals using a qualitative methodology inspired by social anthropology. It indeed presents a case study on the practices and representations associated with family meals in two single-parent families in the Québec region. The combined use of direct observation, participatory photography, logbook entries and interviews has shed new light on family meals by revealing the dynamics and meaning that underlie this practice. This study has also highlighted the variability of family meals within the families themselves, their important social dimension, their close association with family relations and the impact the composition of the family unit has on them.

Full textAfter 100 years of existence, can cinema be a source of information about the 20th century? does it represent a historical "document" which can be used by historians? is the "unseen" part of films a testimony of social mores, values, and attitudes of the times? this paper starts with a compilation of all forbidden films in quebec throughout the 20th century and then focuses more specifically on the modus operandi of film censorship since the creation of the "bureau de censure des vues animees de la province de quebec", in 1913, until 1967 when censorship came to an end. The last chapter delves into the years leading up to 1978. The "general principles" of censorship in 1913 are based on those of the british board of film censors with an added touch of local flavor : they are a blend of anglo-saxon puritanism and quebec's catholic ultramontanism. The 1920's are marked by a relative easing of censorship in quebec and by a quasi diplomatic confrontation between the canadian province and the united states. Moreover, the fire at the laurier-palace (1927) kept teenagers under 16 away from those "dark and unhealthy theaters" for 50 years. The catholic church then started its most daunting crusade of the 20th century : the fight against immoral films. Then, while duplessis was dictating quebec's fate, the "bureau de censure" seemed more interested in dealing with political issues during the 40's and 50's. For quebec, the 60's signaled an unprecedented historical acceleration. The changing social mores, values and attitudes led to a newly found awareness which changed the face of quebec society forever. This upheaval became known as the quiet revolution. Finally, in 1967, bill 52 was enacted thus ending 50 years of repression in film. This thesis shows that the reasons underlying the rejection of a film reflect the social mores, values and attitudes of 20th century quebecers

Full textThis exploratory study examines perceptions of various Quebec actors on population health research funding by the food industry in Quebec to establish whether this practice is considered socially and ethically acceptable in the current context. In addition, participants were asked about their perceptions on the acceptability of industry-funded scientists on advisory committees to the government. Semi-structured individual interviews were undertaken with 14 stakeholders involved in this issue, who are employed in the academic sector, the public sector, the food industry, non-profit organizations and the media. Even without consensuses on the various research questions, it can be concluded that research collaborations with the food industry can be acceptable, but that they must absolutely be accompanied by rigorous mechanisms and ethical conduct of the involved parties. This study allows for a better understanding of the factors that come into play to determine the social acceptability of the practice. These factors are the context, the interests of involved stakeholders, the ethical issues related to collaborations, the variation in the acceptability of different collaborative approaches, the variation in the acceptability of collaborating with certain members of the food industry as opposed to others, differences in the theoretical and practical application of these collaborations and the notion of manipulation by the food industry. In addition, it refers to a series of ethically acceptable collaborative approaches, and offers a list of essential values and principles for the acceptability of this practice, from an ethical standpoint. Thus, the results point to safeguards and appropriate protections that would render the collaborations socially and ethically acceptable. Acceptable collaborations include the establishment of pooling funds, the appointment of a third party to manage the collaborations, the involvement of ethics committees, and the development and implementation of decision-making mechanisms, protocols and agreements for acceptable collaborations.

Full textThe objective of this study was to evaluate in subjects covered by the Quebec Régime général d’assurance médicament (RGAM) with a new episode of depression, the association between material and social deprivation and the quality of antidepressant drug treatment. The information was obtained from databases of the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec. Among the 100 455 subjects included, 65% had at least one claim for an antidepressant in the year following the diagnosis. The most materially deprived subjects were slightly more likely to be exposed to an antidepressant than the least deprived. This association was reversed for the social deprivation. No statistically significant association was observed between the level of deprivation and quality indicators (first-line antidepressant, dose, persistence and compliance). These results will contribute to determine if the objective of RGAM to provide equal access to drug treatment regardless of the income status is achieved in this population.

Full textThis dissertation studies the role played by the Myth of English as the global language in framing the debate on the intensive teaching of English in Quebec; a notion closely related to Quebec's language issue. Framing theories suggest that different actors (political, media and citizens) "frame" events by favoring certain definitions of social issues, which later influence how individuals perceive these issues. However, to be effective and mobilizing, frames must “strike a chord”. They must resonate culturally with shared historical narratives or myths (Snow and Benford, 1988). In this sense, due to its hegemony around the world, some researchers describe the discourse that constructs English as the universal language as a "myth". They also suggest that this myth plays a strategic role in framing linguistic issues around the world. In the unique sociolinguistic context of Quebec, where the French and English languages have coexisted and competed for a long time, we may wonder how this myth influences the framing of linguistic issues. In some debates surrounding the teaching of English in Quebec, we do observe a tension between two ways of framing English: some describe it as a “key to opening up to the world”, a promise of individual success and social mobility; on the other hand, others see it as the "language of Lord Durham", a dominating language whose expansion, particularly in the Quebec context, threatens the French language and the feeling of collective identity. The dissertation focuses on the framing of the public debate surrounding the announcement of a mandatory intensive English program policy, between February 2011 and 2015 in Quebec. It raises the question of the role played by the Myth of English as the global language in this debate. Using a three-phase mixed methods research design, the dissertation begins with a historical survey tracing the genesis of the frames and myths emerging from different public debates on the teaching of English. In a second step, a qualitative analysis allows us to list the different frames and describe framing and reasoning devices that compose them. Finally, a quantitative automated content analysis of documents from sources involved in the debate helps validate and measure the frames’ presence in this public debate. The results underline the central and polarizing nature of the issue of the teaching of English as a second language in Quebec history and show that it represent a terrain for a long-lasting ideological struggle. We observe a weak dominance of the globalizing master frame and we also note that this instrumental and universalizing perspective is not specific to recent debates, but that it is rather expressed throughout Quebec's history. The study also shows the strength and resilience of the nationalizing master frame, particularly among citizens involved in the debate, even though we observe signs of a decline of the myth of English as Lord Durham’s language. Finally, it shows that, in the Quebec debate on the teaching of English, the myth of English as the global language, provides a cultural resonance effect to the frames which mobilizes it. It allows actors to anchor their arguments in a widely shared historical narrative and conveys a certain communication ethos. It thus provides a moral evaluation grid of the issue which makes it possible to legitimize the dominant position of English in the world and, by the same token, to justify the adoption of policies favoring its teaching. The thesis responds to the need, raised by some researchers, for studies that take into account the cultural, socio-political and ideological dimensions of the framing process (Oliver and Johnston, 2000). It also contributes to a better understanding of the role of myths in this process and highlights the power dynamics that contribute to the emergence, the rise in power, and then the dominance of certain frames. In addition, the thesis helps to shed light on the understanding of how discourse on English as the global language is constructed and articulated locally. By uniquely combining certain concepts and methods from various research traditions, the favored mixed methodological approach offers a multidimensional look to the complex phenomenon of framing and helps to better understand its process.

Full textThis master's project attempted to better understand the health-related changes occurring as a result of the experience of a literacy process, from the perspectives of learners who attended either of two community-based literacy groups in Quebec City. We sought not only to identify health outcomes in learners, but also to document the mechanisms explaining health-related changes, in order to identify elements of literacy processes which contribute to improve health. A qualitative study design was used, more specifically a narrative approach. Eleven semi-structured individual interviews, as well as two group interviews, were conducted with learners and ex-learners. Analysis of the data revealed a wide range of health-related effects of community literacy. Learners develop various skills that empower them to take greater control of their health. This is reflected in certain changes in their health behaviors, but also in more collective actions in line with health promotion. Our results also reveal that learners thrive through their literacy processes and develop a greater sense of well-being. Literacy allows them to realize themselves, build a social network and improve their self-image. Elements of the organizational culture of the community-based literacy groups stand out as contributing to improve the health of learners, including the collective approach, the non-judgment and respect, the power and space for expression that they have, as well as the opportunities which are offered to them to take action and experience success. Finally, the literacy practitioners seem to play a key role in improving the health of learners, because they embody the culture of community literacy and offer them listening and unwavering support tailored to their needs.

Full textThis thesis focuses upon the participation of aged persons in the University of third age of Quebec (UTAQ) and its association with the ageing-well norm promoted within the Quebec’s policy on ageing. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 15 students in the UTAQ in order to understand their reasons for participating in this organization as well as their perspectives regarding ageing and how it is framed and managed by society. The conceptual framework underpinning this research is the anthropology of policy, which is useful for understanding how citizens are governed in a neoliberal society. This framework derives from Foucault’s work regarding knowledge-power links and norms. The recent literature regarding neoliberalism emphasises the technique of responsibilization which is central to this mode of governance. The perspectives of the UTAQ students revealed that they are very sensitive to the messages within the ageing policy and that they generally adhere to its vision of ageing while nevertheless remaining very critical of certain aspects. Finally, this analysis reveals that UTAQ may effectively contributes, in various ways, to the objectives of the ageing-well policy.

Full textAu courant de la période industrielle, la ville de Québec a connu une croissance démographique rapide alimentée, entre autres, par une immigration européenne massive. Celle-ci contribua d’une façon notable aux changements socioéconomiques de la capitale durant cette période. Parmi les migrants, les Irlandais catholiques furent nombreux à transiter ou à s’établir à Québec et y laissèrent des traces encore visibles aujourd’hui. Or, bien que l’histoire de la diaspora irlandaise en sol nord-américain ait fait l’objet de plusieurs recherches, le cas de la ville de Québec, tout comme sa période d’industrialisation, reste encore peu étudié à ce jour. Grâce à l’utilisation des recensements nominatifs canadiens de 1852 à 1911 et des actes de mariage, cette étude a comme objectif d’analyser le niveau d’intégration de la communauté irlandaise de Québec sur les plans économique, social et spatial, et ce, à micro-échelle. Ainsi, en observant les emplois et la mobilité socioprofessionnelle des travailleurs, les unions exogames et l’évolution de l’établissement irlandais sur le territoire à l’étude, la présente recherche permet d’établir un constat positif : les Irlandais catholiques ont su s’intégrer à la société urbaine de Québec. Néanmoins, considérant la forte diminution démographique de la communauté au tournant du siècle, l’intégration s’est effectuée davantage à l’échelle des ménages que pour l’ensemble de la communauté.
During the industrial period, the city of Quebec experienced rapid population growth fueled, among others, by massive European immigration. This contributed significantly to socio-economic changes in the capital during this period. Among the migrants, many Irish Catholics passed through or settled in Quebec City and left marks still visible today. However, although the history of the Irish diaspora in North America has been the subject of several studies, the case of Quebec City, especially during the industrial period, is as yet little studied. With the help of Canadian censuses from 1852 to 1911 and marriage records, this study aims to analyze the degree of integration of the Quebec Irish community in economic, social and spatial components, at micro-scale. Through the observation of employment and socio-professional mobility of the workers, exogamous unions and the evolution of Irish Catholics establishment on the territory, this study shows that overall Quebec Irish catholic have been able to integrate themselves in Quebec urban society. However, considering the important population decline at the turn of the century, this integration is more visible at the household level than at the community level.

Full textThis research is an attempt to document and analyze the social impacts of the Raglan Mine on the communities of Salluit and Kangiqsujuaq in order to further understand the consequences of such projects on the inuit populations of Nunavik. Nunavik is facing an unprecedented mining boom. Extractive companies are attracted by its considerable mineral resources. Following the promotion of mining development by the Quebec Government, the level of exploration and exploitation is unprecedented North of the 49th parallel. However, the large-scale development of the mining industry is not without consequences for the Inuit people of Nunavik that will be the first to feel the impacts of these mining projects. However, we know little about the social impacts of mining projects taking place in Nunavik. By studying and comparing the social impacts of Raglan on the communities of Salluit and Kangiqsujuaq, this research aims to help bridge these gaps and bring on new light to the impact of mining development in Nunavik. Le rôle du rapport entretenu avec la L1 et la communauté de la L1 dans la construction de ces attitudes a également été étudié. Au total, 121 élèves francophones et anglophones fréquentant l’école secondaire ont répondu à un questionnaire, et leurs données ont été analysées par rapport aux résultats obtenus aux tests de L2. Des relations significatives entre les attitudes envers la politique linguistique, la L2 et la compétence en L2 ont été confirmées, ainsi que le rôle de l’identité ethnolinguistique dans la construction de ces attitudes. Ces résultats diffèrent selon le groupe linguistique.

Full textIn the early 2000s, Quebec regions had a surge in uranium exploration after the substantial increase of the uranium prices in the markets. These uranium exploration projects were confronted with growing citizens and politics mobilizations who questioned the industry expertise and the government capacity to protect the public interests and the environment. Based on the advocacy coalition framework, this thesis seeks to explain the Quebec government’s decision to suspend the certificates of authorization (in other words, to impose an administrative moratorium) in the uranium industry even though the most advanced project, the Matoush Project, received all the administrative authorization. By studying and comparing the mobilized coalitions on this issue and their influence on the successive governments, this research should bring a new light on neglected elements of analysis from the advocacy coalition framework.
