Jarvis, Matthew. "Architecture of Acupuncture." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30912.

Abstract:

â Architecture of Acupunctureâ refers to one way an architect may begin a design project. This thesis was a one-year collaborative effort with my Masters Diploma Professors, Peter Zumthor and Miguel Kreisler, at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, Switzerland, in 2001. To begin, a surgical study of a place just south of Pavia, Italy, was conducted and analyzed to determine the most appropriate program for that place, and again analyzed to determine the most appropriate image and material for that program. I located points in the immediate area of the site where 1.water, 2.road, 3.built mass, and 4.event, intersect on the site and called these â points of convergence.â The points of convergence were used to map out a unique way in which the site can be read. These are the acupuncture points on the body of the place.
The project is an Industrial Fish Farm. It is the largest fish farm in Europe and sells fish to all of Northern Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and France, while also serving fresh fish daily to the small towns of Mezzana Corti, Tre Re, and Cascina della Colonne approximate to it.
The Farm is one and a half kilometers of concrete water-filled fields inserted into an irregular shaped land-form between two 18 foot tall existing earth dams.
The attitude of the Farm is a sensitive one in regard to the flat and quiet farming communities around it. The space the Fish Farm occupies cannot be seen unless from the roads which each run on top of the dams themselves. Two new structures are the only things that can be seen from outside the dams. One is a tower building. One is a line building.
The line building is a restaurant, ninety meters long. The Restaurant enhances the industrial program by offering back to the people of the nearby towns an opportunity to actively interact with the new farm. The Restaurant is clamped to the South Dam Road, which is used for public traffic around perimeter of the site. The tower building is the Operations Building. It acts as an aircraft control tower does for an aircraft carrier, consolidating all built mass into one central structure. The Operations Building is a landmark at the midpoint of the concrete fields. It is clamped to the North Dam Road, dedicated to the daily functioning of the Farm. Both structures are shack-like and cheap; both made well of steel and corrugated metal.
All built things inside the body of the Farm, including the two buildings, adopt in their appearances an â insect imageâ from the machines used to harvest the fish. They are raised up on long and thin steel legs so as to lightly touch the still water they stand in.
Master of Architecture

Abstract:
This thesis is an analysis ans interpretation in terms of modernity of some aspects of architecture and urbanism in chicago from the end of world war ii to the early 1980s. The first part deals with architectural and urbanistic modernism. Mies van der rohe's work in chicago is examined from the aesthetic, economic and structural points of view. The doctrines and buildings of the firm skidmore, owings and merrill, of w. Netsch and b. Goldberg are then examined as so many aspects of modernism in the building art in chicago. The second part focuses on post-modernist doctrines and productions since the mid-1970s. Selected examples (helmut jahn, thomas beeby and stanley tigerman) underline a concern for historicism and semiological communication in chicago current architecture. In the third part is put forward a global interpretation of the set of works analysed previously. The conclusion is the following : the openly proclaimed and supposedly real break between modernism and post-modernism is far less significant than the underlying continuities between the two. They are both part of modernity. To point out different levels of continuity is a means to emphasize some fundamental questions at stake in the status and socio-economic function of architecture in current american society

Schäfer, Lukas Matthias. "Design of reliable aerospace system architecture." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31391.

Abstract:
Reliability and redundancy of safety-critical network systems is a paramount issue in system engineering. Be it in evaluating existing network systems or solving optimization problems for designing network systems, it is important to consider reliability and redundancy. This dissertation is in collaboration with AIRBUS Group, France, and they are very interest in the optimal design of safety-critical aircraft architecture systems which have to consider reliability and redundancy. To address the problem of optimally designing such systems, we chose to focus on one specific aircraft architecture system the door management system. It checks if all doors are properly closed and the cabin has the correct pressure. It is a safety-critical system since it is part of the pressurization system of an aircraft. To optimally design the DMS while considering reliability, a suitable reliability evaluation algorithm is necessary. In this dissertation, we begin by proposing a suitable reliability evaluation algorithm for a type of non series-parallel network system which includes the DMS and which can be used in an optimization model. The reliability evaluation algorithm is based on a simplification of the probability principle of inclusion-exclusion formula for intersections of unions. The simplification exploits the presence of many repeated events and has many fewer terms, which significantly reduces the number of operations needed. We compare its computational efficiency against the sum of disjoint products method KDH88 for a simple artificial example and for the DMS. Afterwards, we introduce the first MILP model for the DMS with k-redundancy. As the model is too difficult to be solved efficiently by standard MILP solvers, we discuss the issues of solving the model with general solving methods such as branch-and-bound and branch-and-price. We introduce specialized branching rules and new heuristics to solve the DMS problem with k-redundancy more efficiently and show results of computational tests which compare the specialized solving algorithms with general solving algorithms for example instances of the DMS problem. Lastly, we discuss the problems of considering reliability in MI(N)LP models for the DMS and how the new reliability evaluation algorithm can be used. In this discussion, we give different MI(N)LP models for the DMS problem with redundancy and reliability. Moreover, we propose a new heuristic for the DMS problem with redundancy and reliability. It is based on branch-and-bound, the Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition and on the new reliability evaluation algorithm. We show results of computational tests of the new heuristic for example instances of the DMS problem and discuss its validity.

Abstract:
Computing devices have a predominant role in our lives, changing most of our daily activities. With the advent of the IoT, more and more embedded devices are expected to be connected, with expected numbers around 20 billion of units for the 2020. Nevertheless, the increase in connectivity does not imply an enhancement of security. Programmable devices, especially connected ones, are at risk of being tampered with: recent history has shown many examples of malicious software attacks compromising their security. Considering that embedded device are required to be cheap in terms of resources they are implemented on low-end microcontrollers, which lack of any memory protection technique, making them unsuitable to implement solutions from the high-end world.Hence, researchers have been recently focusing on strategies to provide them with security guarantees that hold even in case of an attacker with full control on the system, including the Operating System (OS). A promising solution is found in Protected (software) Module Architectures (PMAs): security architectures that can execute protected code in an isolated area of the memory, inaccessible to other software. PMAs can support secure execution of small portion of code, the software modules (SMs), even on devices that are, e.g., malware infected. The target architecture of this thesis is Sancus, an open-source, hardware-only PMA, designed for lightweight embedded devices. The objective of the work is to extend the architecture with Direct Memory Access (DMA) support, a feature that provides peripherals with a secondary channel to access the memory without involving the CPU, and to explore what does it entail from a security prospective. Usually lightweight PMAs do not support DMA, as the benefits coming from its inclusion on the system do not comply with security properties of these architectures: protected memory isolation and confidentiality are no longer guaranteed if a secondary channel, that directly access the memory independently from the CPU, is provided. Main achievements of the thesis are to extend the Sancus 2.0 architecture with DMA support, showing how this affects its security properties and providing a secure way to implement DMA. From the discussion of the upcoming chapters, two solutions stood out: the first one is currently implemented on Sancus, and it consists in entirely excluding DMA from accessing protected memory, preserving SMs security guarantees. The second theoretical solution aims to provide the software modules with DMA functionalities, by allowing some security guarantees for a confined regions inside protected memory. The latter solution is discussed in details and some design options are provided, whereas its implementation is deferred as future work.

Abstract:
HTML clipboardThis study is about Homeowner’s architectural responses to crime in Dar es Salaam Tanzania: its impacts and implications to urban architecture, urban design and urban management. The study explores and examines the processes through which homeowners respond to crimes of burglary, home robbery and fear of it using architectural or physical elements. The processes are explored and examined using case study methodology in three cases in Dar es Salaam. The cases are residential areas of Mikocheni B, Ilala Kasulu and Chang’ombe Housing. The findings from the three cases are compared and the common findings are illuminated and discussed using criminology, economic and social theories and concepts. The results of the study show that, homeowners physically and architecturally modify their home environments for many reasons. Homeowners do so by building or erecting wall fences around their houses and install or barricade doors and windows using metal bars. From the study, the notable main reasons are security and protection from burglary, thefts, home robbery and visual and physical privacy. Others include property marking, disputes and misunderstandings between neighbours and property encroachment by neighbours. In the study, it has been established that, the actions by the homeowners in responding to crime of burglary, thievery and home robberies have impacts and implications on the built environment. The impacts are: affects the visual experience of the built form by limiting view to houses; keeps neighbours apart thus limiting social interaction among residents; segregating public spaces and thus making them empty without people; encroaching on the streets; reducing surveilability of streets and neighbouring dwellings; create the impression of ‘private appearance’ therefore stigmataizing the residential neighbourhoods, all of which increase the vulnerability of areas as well as enhancing the ‘subjective’ feeling of fear in the areas. Furthermore, the responses pose risks to residents when fire evacuation from homes is required, including the effects that affect the environmental comfort conditions of homes and the overall built environment. Despite of the impacts to the built environment as summarised in the foregoing, the study has shown that, homeowners still erect wall fences and barricade their homes due to fear arising from previous crimes. On the basis of the impacts, a new approach to planning of residential housing areas is recommended in which the question of security against crime is included as design factor particularly in urban design. Either an approach to architectural design of houses and the layout of houses that considers crime as an important factor in addition to ‘target hardening’ approach is recommended to increase visibility and surveilability of built environments. The study concludes by highlighting five implications to urban architecture, urban design and urban management at planning and architectural design, considerations which may be of impacts towards improving built environment and management of the urban residential arena. The study ends by outlining and recommending areas of further research.
QC 20100706

Bertolucci, Federico. "Controlling strain stiffening in elastomeric composites by nanofiber network architecture." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2020.

Abstract:
In order to reduce the invasiveness of implantable electronic sensor devices, a technology is needed that could create devices that behave soft and flexible as biological tissue but at the same time maintain their electronic functionality and resist to a high values of sheer and tensile stress. The main problem consists in producing a biocompatible material that stiffens at excessive strain and thus could prevent crack formation and delamination in the more fragile thin functional electronic layers. This thesis presents the methodology to fabricate and characterize a smart composite material composed by polymer nanofiber networks incorporated in an elastomeric matrix. Nanofiber networks of the biocompatible polymer Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) are produced by electrospinning. The polymer Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is used as the elastomeric matrix. The objective is to achieve a significant strain-stiffening transition by introducing a nanofiber network with controlled architecture. To this end a methodology is introduced that enables to synthetize polymer nanofibers with controlled curvature. Dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) are employed to characterize the mechanical properties of the composite material as well as of its single components. The results indicate that the mechanical response of the polymer can be largely controlled by the nanonetwork architecture. Stiff response to tensile stress is obtained when the fibers are straight and aligned in the stress direction. Soft and stretchable response results when fibers are curved or oriented parallel to the strain direction. The introduction of the methodology for fabrication as well as the characterization of such nanonetwork composites with controlled architecture will pave the way for further systematic studies leading to composites with tunable strain stiffening transition.

Leslie, Elizabeth Jane. "Advances in understanding the genetic architecture of cleft lip and palate disorders." Diss., University of Iowa, 2012. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3489.

Full text
Abstract:
Orofacial clefts are a heterogeneous group of craniofacial malformations that affect the lip and/or palate and represent the most common craniofacial birth defect in humans. In 30% of patients the cleft is accompanied by additional physical or cognitive abnormalities. Hundreds of these clefting syndromes have been described, many of which have Mendelian inheritance patterns. The most common of these is Van der Woude syndrome (VWS), caused by mutations in the transcription factor IRF6 (Kondo et al. 2002). The other 70% of patients lack additional features and are considered nonsyndromic. The etiology of nonsyndromic clefts is complex and involves the combined action of multiple genetic variants interacting with environmental factors. A common approach for identifying genetic risk factor for complex disorders such as nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) is the genome wide association study (GWAS). We pursued a locus on 1p22 shown to be associated with NSCL/P by Beaty et al. (2010). Through a combination of expression studies in a mouse model and mutation screening in NSCL/P patients, we identified ARHGAP29 as a novel gene for NSCL/P and the likely etiologic gene at this locus. We identified eight rare variants in NSCL/P patients absent in controls including a nonsense and a frameshift mutation. These rare variants are reminiscent of previous resequencing studies that reported rare coding mutations in 20 different candidate genes for NSCL/P. We reviewed these variants and compared them with variants found in over 7000 exomes from the 1000 Genomes Project (1kGP) and NHLBI Exome Sequencing Project (ESP) to identify the variants and genes most likely to contain etiologic rare variants. We found good support for a role for rare variants in NSCL/P, particularly for MSX1 and genes of the FGF signaling pathway. We next performed several studies to understand the genetic architecture of syndromic forms of clefting, focusing on VWS and popliteal pterygium syndrome (PPS), which is allelic to VWS. We compiled all of the nearly 300 published IRF6 mutations and compared the distribution of these mutations with IRF6 variants obtained from the 1kGP and ESP exomes. We found that mutations causing VWS were significantly over-represented in the DNA-binding domain and for the most part were absent from control exomes, indicating that they are likely to be truly causative for VWS or PPS. These mutations in VWS and PPS only account for 70% of VWS and 97% of PPS. We next hypothesized that mutations in RIPK4, which causes an autosomal recessive pterygia syndrome, could underlie the remaining VWS and/or PPS cases. We found novel homozygous mutations in RIPK4 in two PPS patients. This result has significant clinical ramifications, as counseling of recurrence risk is very different for PPS patients whose disease is caused by dominant IRF6 mutations compared to recessive RIPK4 mutations. Finally, to understand the variable expressivity of VWS and PPS we performed an association study to identify genetic modifiers. We also looked for genotype-phenotype correlations between the type and location of IRF6 mutations. Although we did not find strong evidence that the candidate genes we selected from GWAS of NSCL/P or other clefting syndromes are modifiers of the VWS or PPS phenotypes, several marginal associations suggest that members of the IRF6 gene regulatory network could act as modifiers. Finally, we found evidence of a larger genotype-phenotype correlation by demonstrating that mutation-negative VWS families have a deficiency of cleft lip phenotypes. Together this work has advanced our understanding of the genetic basis of this diverse set of cleft lip and palate disorders, informing both the biology of craniofacial development and the clinical care of patients affected by these disorders.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 49-50).
This thesis explores an application of a rule-based method to a practical architecture design. It uses shape grammar, a paradigm of generating designs in a specific style by using shape tokens (architectural elements) and rules of transforming between them. If a shape grammar can be made for mass production design that needs many repetitious units with slight differences, it would be very productive and valuable in the context of professional architectural practice. As an example, this thesis proposes a shape grammar for generating apartment plans in the style of Mies van der Rohe's high-rise projects that he made in the first half of twentieth century. Through this grammar, alternative apartment plans with different volumetric schemes can be developed rapidly for the given site, and allow an architect to quickly evaluate different possibilities of a building's mass and layout. Such a grammar also can be a good pedagogical tool, and an architectural student can use it to study and understand Mies van der Rohe's apartment designs. The thesis evaluates the advantages and the disadvantages of this shape grammar in the context of professional practice, and discusses the possibilities of similar grammars that could be developed for other architectural styles.
by Junsik Moon.
S.M.

Abstract:
After defining the Enterprise Architecture, as a discipline, its context of transformation, and then its main frameworks and methods (the Praxeme method above all), this thesis describes the modeling needs, notably to represent the business processes and the operational decisions. After a state of the art of existing languages and notations for the modeling of business processes, decision-making and business rules, both in the academic world and in the industrial world, the standard languages and notations are presented in detail. This thesis demonstrates the limitations of the languages for modeling business processes to represent operational decision-making.It then evaluates the new DMN language (Decision Model and Notation), proposed by the OMG (Object Management Group) and the main research subject of this thesis, in order to verify that it is a better adapted alternative solution, applying the separation of concerns principle. The resulting DMN model is composed of a diagram and decision tables. The experiments with a demonstrator, implemented in this thesis, show that it is possible to automate the operational decision-making and modeled. Several technical solutions will be detailed and compared in light of the MDA (Model Driven Architecture). Finally, several interesting perspectives of the DMN use are developed into the conclusion

Abstract:
When architecture deterritorializes itself from its domain of origin to be conceived and experienced “in” literature, its dominant and traditional ontological status is unavoidably altered. The cause of this alteration has to do with the representative nature of its host art, which, according to Etienne Souriau, presents a formal split into a primary form, the one representing (the literary language); and a secondary form, that of the represented (in this case the architecture). This situation causes the writer to be inevitably confronted by different conditions of conception of architecture than those taken into account by the architect. In this research we propose a method of analytical observation based on four levels of conception of the deterritorialized architectures within the literary text. We are going to apply this method to two short stories: Le Dépeupleur by Samuel Beckett, and Le Terrier (Der Bau) by Franz Kafka. The first two levels of conception detail the way architecture is organized within the diegesis of the literary work, and they are: 1) the level of conception of the architectural Object, and 2) the level of conception of the Experience the characters make of it. The two other levels detail the way architecture is modulated, amplified, deformed and oriented by the artistic language, and they are: 3) the level of conception of the Narration of the Object and the Experience, and 4) the level of conception of their Textualization. The very singular assembly of these four levels conceived by the writer will lead the reader to have an unprecedented aesthetic and cognitive experience of architecture that we attempt to evaluate in this research
