The influence of drying leather at 30% strain on the tensile strength and crack resistance of the grain layer of chromium tanned bovine leather was examined. The effect of drying under different strains was also examined. Bovine wet blue splits were stretched (by 30%) either along one axis (uniaxial) or two perpendicular axes (biaxial) and dried in this stretched condition. The effect of drying paper by direct contact with superheated steam was determined with respect to the physical, optical and chemical properties of the dried sheet. The results were compared with those for paper dried in a similar fashion by direct contact with hot air.<br>It was found that the results depended on the type of pulp from which the sheet was made. The effects of straw burning and drying-rewetting cycles on nutrient availability were studied in an attempt to assess the practical importance of the yearly precropping practice by farmers of burning off excess crop residues and of the seasonal climate of North-East Nigeria.
