Meier, Marcia Lynn. "The Armstrong site: Defining the Bluff Creek phase for south central Kansas." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/1542.

Full text
Abstract:
The Bluff Creek complex is a series of archeological sites along the Bluff Creek drainage system in Harper and Sumner Counties in south central Kansas. It is one of the least well understood archaeological complexes of the Middle Ceramic Period (A.D. 900-1500). The recent excavation of a series of features at the Armstrong site (14HP5) in Harper County, Kansas provides new data which serves to bring the archaeological record of south-central Kansas into sharper focus. New radiocarbon dates provide solid footing for the temporal placement of Bluff Creek among its contemporaries in the southern and central Plains and substantial artifact inventories allow for the comparison of Bluff Creek sites with neighboring and distant groups. A reanalysis of ceramic sherds previously reported for 14HP5 indicates that the ceramic assemblage from Bluff Creek sites is more homogeneous than was thought. Analysis of artifacts obtained in the 2004-2005 excavations at the Armstrong Site indicate that horticulture and bison hunting were of immense importance. The faunal assemblage indicates an early emphasis on bison hunting. In addition to recent excavations, local collectors have graciously allowed their collections to be documented and have offered information about site locations and the local environment. All of this new data allows a preliminary definition of the Bluff Creek phase and its differentiation from contemporaneous groups in the southern and central Plains.<br>Thesis (M.A)--Wichita State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dept. of Anthropology<br>"December 2007."

Reed, David Ross. "Examining past research with new technologies: The Ewing Site revisited with ARCGIS." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/6836.

Full text
Abstract:
During three summers in the late 1960s, the Ewing Site was excavated in the Four Corners area of Colorado and was archived at Wichita State University. Since that time, archaeological recovery methods and analysis technology has changed. Along with other technological changes, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technology has had a profound impact in the worldof Cultural Resource Management. With the advent and implementation of this new technology, archaeology has found a faster and easier way of examining data across vast geographical areas. This allows for better probability studies for the location and protection of sites across the UnitedStates. Landscapes can be examined to determine how people moved across their environments such as hunting routes, natural resource usage, and migration studies. Little has been done in applying this technology to older data and looking at site level spatial relationships. Using the Ewing site as a template, there are several questions that need to be addressed. The first is to determine if there is potential for the site to offer new information. Next we need to determine if there is enough information still available in order to make a proper assessment of the site. And finally we must ask, did we learn anything new? GIS must further our knowledge of the people who once lived there to make it worth the effort of applying to sites of this type. This information can be easily integrated at theinstitution level and incorporated into other larger GIS databases that include data from all over aspecific region. It could also be invaluable in sorting through vast collections that may have sat untouched since the Great Depression and the early days of the Works Project Administration.Salvage archaeology is an important aspect in the history of the profession within the United States, and gaining accurate and important information in minimal time would serve to advance archaeology as a whole.<br>Thesis (M.A.)--Wichita State University, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dept. of Anthropology

Salie, Sulayman. "Site specific radar coverage and land clutter modelling." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/20466.

Full text
Abstract:
The objectives of this minor dissertation were to investigate relevant theory, models and processes required for the development of a site specific radar coverage and land clutter modelling tool. Various sources of digital elevation model (DEM) and land cover (LC) data were investigated. It was found that the ASTER GDEM and SRTM 30 m DEM datasets can be used to characterise land topography for all intended areas of interest. It was also found that two LC datasets, namely the National Land Cover 2009, and GlobeLand30 m data sources can be used to characterise land cover for all intended areas of interest. For each terrain type found in the GlobeLand30 or NLC 2009 datasets, a decision was made as to which of the terrain types for each land clutter model matches the land cover data terrain type the closest. These classifications were presented in the form of tables. It was concluded that the SRTM 30 m DEM dataset and the GlobeLand30 LC dataset should be used as they are currently the highest quality DEM and LC datasets that are freely available that covers all intended areas of interest. Numerous monostatic land clutter models exist in literature that address specific cases of clutter types and behaviours. Nine such land clutter models were investigated. Measured land clutter data collected over various terrain types in the Western Cape region of South Africa are compared to simulated backscatter data from these land clutter models. From insights gained from the literature study as well as the analysis of these comparisons, a classification was made on each model's compatibility and validity for different grazing angles and frequency ranges. A classification table was presented indicating the appropriate land clutter models to use in order of their validity, with respect to different grazing angle regions and frequency ranges.

Abstract:
<p>Global financial crisis, triggered by the U.S. sub-prime mortgage crisis, is now the hot issue all over the world. The crisis has already slowed down the world economy and brought great shocks to almost every industry. For B2C companies all over the world, the crisis is more of an opportunity than a threat and therefore these companies should use marketing techniques to further boost their revenue and profit.</p><p>In view of this situation, this thesis is dedicated to discuss the price and promotion strategies used by B2C companies during the crisis. Through case studies of four B2C companies, that is, TaoBao.com, DangDang.com, EBay.com and Amazon.com, we conclude that discount, pricing leadership and penetration pricing are the universal price strategies used, while they also use nearly similar promotion strategies: advertising, public relation and sales promotion. Considering the current crisis, we also think that current price and promotion strategies are insufficient in face of global financial crisis in that they are not flexible enough to adapt themselves to the changing consumer behaviors and economic surroundings. Consequently, to seek to address these problems, we here bring forward three suggestions: strengthened segment-based pricing Strategy, innovative promotion strategy and flexible marketing mix.</p>

Tomiuk, Daniel 1967. "The impact of site-communality on the attitudinal and behavioural components of site-loyalty : a cross-sectional study." Thesis, McGill University, 2005. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=85960.

Full text
Abstract:
We examine whether the precepts of what have been termed 'close', 'intimate', or, more specifically, 'communal' relationships in Social Psychology may be communicated via Web site content and whether this positively impacts Site-Loyalty. We introduce a variable called Site-Communality defined as the extent to which Web site content signals that a company's relationship with its customers goes beyond the formal, 'tit for tat' business dealings that are typically expected from purely commercial exchanges, and instead, more closely abide by the norms and behaviours evocative of friendships and/or family relations. We develop multi-dimensional measures of Site-Communality and Site-Loyalty. Using Structural Equation Modelling (LISREL VIII), we then empirically investigate the influence of Site-Communality on the attitudes and behavioural intentions associated with Site-Loyalty using cross-sectional data collected from 305 subjects asked to explore and evaluate one among many real Web sites chosen so as to maximize variability on Site-Communality.<br>Our results show that Site-Communality has a strong, direct, positive effect on the attitudes and behavioural intentions associated with Site-Loyalty. This directly contradicts conjectures from several authors dismissing as unimportant or irrelevant to Web site design, the affective/relational aspects more closely associated with traditional, interpersonal, face-to-face commercial encounters (e.g., Cox & Dale, 2001; Zeithaml, Parasuraman, & Malhotra, 2001, 2002). Generally, such factors were believed to loose their relevance in self-service, Web-based commercial environments, at best, becoming contingently important only when customer/employee communications actually occurs (i.e., emails/telephone conversations).<br>However, contrary to our expectations, our results show that the positive relationship between Site-Communality and Site-Loyalty is attenuated (rather than accentuated) by the visitor's 'Communal-Orientation in Traditional Commercial Environments' which is defined as the extent to which a consumer enjoys 'getting to know' employees (i.e., waitress, bank teller, hair stylist) and relating with them on a more personal-level than is typically required for the effective delivery of a service. One possible explanation for this unexpected result is that when highly communally-orientated consumers are exposed to a Web site high in Site-Communality, they may be reminded of what they are missing out on if they choose to conduct their business online rather than in more traditional business environments.

Dzikaras, Mindaugas. "RecA-templated DNA scaffolds for selective site-specific assembly of nanoparticles for electronic devices." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20666/.

Full text
Abstract:
With today’s challenges in the electronic industry, novel alternative ap- proaches for manufacturing devices at nanoscale are being investigated. Using self-assembly, arguably has the best potential for nanostructures. DNA and proteins - some of the most important biomolecules use self- assembly extensively for natural functions. Chemical and structural pre- dictability of DNA and specificity of proteins promise a big potential for novel materials and could allow creation of structures controlled at nanoscale level. RecombinaseA - a DNA-binding protein has been used for controllable and predictable patterning of selected DNA sequences, opening the way to nanometre-scale DNA marking. However, protein patterning alone does not add any electric or other desired functionality to the DNA, there- fore additional modifications are neccessary. Furthermore, since biologi- cal molecules have transient functionality, system stability investigation is crucial for needed modification and subsequent usage. This project focused on RecA-patterned DNA modification for electric prop- erty addition. Thiolation and subsequent attachment of gold or magnetic nanoparticles to RecA protein present on DNA were investigated as a method for creating electrically conductive nanoscale objects. More specifically, at- tachment of gold nanoparticles throughout the whole patterned region of DNA and attachment of single nanoparticles at precise positions were looked into. The work successfully demonstrated that both nanoparticle deposition along the full length of RecA-coated DNA and specific single nanoparticle positioning is feasible. For investigating RecA-DNA stability, a system based on FRET was de- vised and used to analyse interaction kinetics. It was found that RecA-DNA complexes are fully formed in minutes and stay bound for hours. Specific configurations of the set-up showed distinct lack of signal, suggesting com- plicated interactions between the protein and patterned DNA. The project demonstrated through binding of NPs at specific locations and on the whole filament length that the system has potential for electronic applications and its stability is sufficient for processing times.

Assadi, Sami Omar Ali. "An investigation of the records kept by supervisors on construction sites." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/365.

Full text
Abstract:
During the execution of a project constructed under the traditional contractual system, separate sets of site records are typically kept by each team of the two main parties on the construction site: the contractor, and the supervisor who looks after the client's interests. While the contractor's prime concern is to construct the project in accordance with the contract documents, one of the site supervisor's main functions is to keep a good record of what actually takes place during the construction process. Identifying the contractor's ability to complete the project on time, confirming that works are carried out correctly, and dealing with contractor's claims, are some instances where site records are likely to be used. It is therefore very important that the record-keeping system adopted by the supervising team provides detailed information in a readily-accessible format to ensure that facts can be established at any time during the construction period, or years later, when disputes may develop. This research programme studied the nature of existing site records kept by construction supervisors, to identify the types of records kept, the use made of them, and the problems and difficulties encountered in maintaining such records. It concentrated mainly on records of progress of construction works. The methodology adopted for undertaking this research, apart from reviewing the relevant literature, involved carrying out preliminary studies and conducting a national survey. The preliminary investigation comprised two studies as follows:• Studying site records kept on a project under construction. • Studying a set of site records kept on a completed project. The national survey, using mailed questionnaires, aimed at determining attitudes held and procedures currently adopted in the site record-keeping process in order that the present state of the art might be determined. The data gathered from the survey, in addition to resolving the research aims and objectives, has been used to investigate a number of assertions made regarding particular areas of construction supervisors' site records. The research findings revealed that the typical set of site records kept by construction supervisors is deficient in a number of respects. Various problems and difficulties relating to the procedures currently adopted by site staff have been identified which will typically affect the quality of these records and hence limit their value. If records are to be more useful, they must be more accessible and this suggests an increasing use of computers. With information held electronically in an organised system, the problems of accessibility should be reduced considerably. In addition to the general conclusions, a number of recommendations to improve site records have been made, including elements of quality procedures for record-keeping, and the potential use of an electronic diary software as a valuable tool for computerising one of the most important sources of site records.

Abstract:
Dentre estes atributos destacaram-se o site fornecer informações de qualidade, oferecer o que era esperado e disponibilizar opções de comunicação que funcionam.<br>Electronic government (e-gov) refers to all forms of communication conducted through information technology (IT) that can bring several benefits to public bodies in a general form. Being a recent technology, there are many resources that can be exploited for the benefit of government, citizens and businesses that interact via this tool. Despite presenting a considerable range of opportunities, electronic government and new forms of public interaction arising from the use of IT can provide some threats such as instead of improving a bureaucratic process; just use the electronic form for access and processing in a computerized form. In order to have the opportunities to be exploited, in this context, and threats to be avoided, this study proposed a model for analysis of e-government service sites. Initially, the model was evaluated by analyzing the content of e-gov sites for the five states with the largest number of sites which together represent 50% of all national e-government sites, which are the states of São Paulo, Paraná , Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. This first analysis has made it possible the development of a SWOT of the analyzed sites and then the evaluation of the model through focus group and quantitative surveys using questionnaires focused on the site of \"Poupa Tempo\". The results obtained from these analyzes were similar, which made us conclude that the proposed model is a valid tool to analyze the services of e-gov sites. Other important results were also found, such as identifying the attributes that influence user satisfaction of e-government services. Among these attributes stood out the site to provide quality information, to offer what was expected, and to provide communication options that work out.

Grimm, Frank. "Enabling collaborative modelling for a multi-site model-driven software development approach for electronic control units." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2012. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/20688/.

Full text
Abstract:
An important aspect of support for distributed work is to enable users at different sites to work collaboratively, across different sites, even different countries but where they may be working on the same artefacts. Where the case is the design of software systems, design models need to be accessible by more than one modeller at a time allowing them to work independently from each other in what can be called a collaborative modelling process supporting parallel evolution. In addition, as such design is a largely creative process users are free to create layouts which appear to better depict their understanding of certain model elements presented in a diagram. That is, that the layout of the model brings meaning which exceed the simple structural or topological connections. However, tools for merging such models tend to do so from a purely structural perspective, thus losing an important aspect of the meaning which was intended to be conveyed by the modeller. This thesis presents a novel approach to model merging which allows the preservation of such layout meaning when merging. It first presents evidence from an industrial study which demonstrates how modellers use layout to convey meanings. An important finding of the study is that diagram layout conveys domain-specific meaning and is important for modellers. This thesis therefore demonstrates the importance of diagram layout in model-based software engineering. It then introduces an approach to merging which allows for the preservation of domain-specific meaning in diagrams of models, and finally describes a prototype tool and core aspects of its implementation.

Uprety, Bibek. "Metallization of Self-Assembled DNA Templates for Electronic Circuit Fabrication." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2017. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6372.

Abstract:
This work examines the deposition of metallic and semiconductor elements onto self-assembled DNA templates for the fabrication of nanodevices. Biological molecules like DNA can self-assemble into a variety of complex 2-D and 3-D architectures without the need for expensive patterning tools. In addition, self-assembled DNA templates can be designed to controllably place functional nanomaterials with molecular precision. These characteristics make DNA an attractive template for fabricating electronic circuits from biological molecules. However, electrically conductive structures are required for electronic applications. While metallized DNA nanostructures have been demonstrated, the ability to make thin, continuous wires that are electrically conductive still represents a formidable challenge. DNA-templated wires have generally been granular in appearance with a resistivity approximately two to three orders of magnitude higher than that of the bulk material. An improved method for the metallization of DNA origami is examined in this work that addresses these challenges of size, morphology and conductivity of the metallized structure. Specifically, we demonstrated a metallization process that uses gold nanorod seeds followed by anisotropic electroless (autocatalytic) plating to provide improved morphology and greater control of the final metallized width of conducting metal lines. Importantly, growth during electroless deposition occurs preferentially in the length direction at a rate that is approximately four times the growth rate in the width direction, which enables fabrication of narrow, continuous wires. The electrical properties of 49 nanowires with widths ranging from 13 nm to 29 nm were characterized, and resistivity values as low as 8.9 x 10-7 Ω-m were measured, which represent some of the smallest nanowires and the lowest resistivity values reported in the literature. The metallization procedure developed on smaller templates was also successfully applied to metallize bigger DNA templates of tens of micrometers in length. In addition, a polymer-assisted annealing process was discovered to possibly improve the resistivity of DNA metal nanowires. Following metallization of bigger DNA origami structures, controlled placement of gold nanorods on a DNA breadboard (~100 x 100 nm2) to make rectangular, square and T-shaped metallic structures was also demonstrated. For site-specific placement of nanorods to a DNA template, we modified the surface of the gold nanorods with single-stranded DNA. The rods were then attached to DNA templates via complementary base-pairing between the DNA on the nanorods and the attachment strands engineered into the DNA "breadboard" template. Gaps between the nanorods were then filled controllably via anisotropic plating to make 10 nm diameter continuous metallic structures. Finally, controlled placement of metal (gold) - semiconductor (tellurium) materials on a single DNA origami template was demonstrated as another important step toward the fabrication of DNA-based electronic components. The combination of molecularly directed deposition and anisotropic metallization presented in this work represents important progress towards the creation of nanoelectronic devices from self-assembled biological templates.

Abstract:
Site selection, and the means to access specific sites, is a keystone of parasitology. I evaluated migration and site selection behaviours of metacercariae of two congeneric species of strigeoid trematode throughout growth and encystment phases in the fathead minnow. Results showed that pre-encystment stages of Ornithodiplostomum ptychocheilus migrate along specific neural tracts to access sites in the optic lobes of the brain. Conversely, pre-encystment stages of Ornithodiplostomum sp. migrate via direct penetration, or via the vascular system to access visceral organs, especially the liver. Remarkably, both species have a bi-phasic pattern of development, with growth and encystment occurring in unique sites. Finally, I examined patterns of rodlet cell proliferation and maturation in response to growth and encystment phases of O. ptychocheilus. Cell densities were low (<11/mm2) in brain tissue adjacent to 1 and 2 week old metacercaria, but peaked to approximately 210/mm2 at 6 weeks. These results shed new light on the potential function of these enigmatic cells.<br>x, 125 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm.

Abstract:
In order to ensure a reliable operation of the electronic devices of a passenger car, its thermal situation is successively evaluated during each phase of the development process. Of particular interest is to predict the time period, during which the electronic system works within its optimal temperature range, while it is subjected to critical operating conditions. In order to compute its temperature under time-dependent thermal loads, different numerical models and computational methods have been developed and validated in the present study. In a first part, several innovative coupling codes strategies for the computation of the different heat transfer modes are proposed according to the convection boundary conditions and based on a system analysis. For reasonable computing times in the development process, a steady-state approach is used to solve the convective flow. In a second part, numerical models for the computation of the convective heat transfer mode are examined with test cases, in particular in view of mesh requirements and turbulence modeling, and verified in comparison with literature. In the third and last part, the co-simulation strategies are verified by means of two complex electronic systems, on the one hand a lead-acid battery situated in a spare-wheel cavity, on the other hand a sound amplifier assembled in cavity located between the engine compartment and the cabin. Finally, the efficiency and the reliability of both co-simulation strategies are discussed for implementation in the digital development process

Abstract:
Our group has developed a 20 μm passive atmospheric water vapour monitor. The Infrared Radiometer for Millimetre Astronomy (IRMA) has been commissioned and deployed for site testing for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) and the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). Measuring precipitable water vapour (PWV) requires both a sophisticated atmospheric model (BTRAM) and an instrument (IRMA). Atmospheric models depend on atmospheric profiles. Most profiles are generic in nature, representing only a latitude in some cases. Site-specific atmospheric profiles are required to accurately simulate the atmosphere above any location on Earth. These profiles can be created from publicly available archives of radiosonde data, that offer nearly global coverage. Having created a site-specific profile and model, it is necessary to determine the PWV sensitivity to the input parameter uncertainties used in the model. The instrument must also be properly calibrated. In this thesis, I describe the radiometric calibration of the IRMA instrument, and the creation and analysis of site-specific atmospheric models for use with the IRMA instrument in its capacity as an atmospheric water vapour monitor for site testing.<br>xii, 135 leaves : ill. ; 28 cm. --

Abstract:
Surgical site infection surveillance (enumeration, and reporting of cases) reduces infection incidence. Data-driven "trigger" mechanisms focus surveillance on high-probability cases, yet often lack specificity. We aimed to develop trigger mechanisms with greater specificity for surveillance of cardiac surgical site infection. We developed these mechanisms in a two part study: systematic review to identify potential trigger factors; and nested case-control study to derive trigger mechanisms from a novel information structure called a data warehouse. Among 158 studies, we identified 570 trigger factors, which we grouped into themes, using the top 33 in the case-control study Using 203 cases and 516 controls, we derived two models for surveillance trigger mechanisms. These models provided true positive rates of 0.941 and 0.931 respectively (non-inferior to the current trigger mechanism), with false positive rates of 0.1085 each (superior to the current trigger mechanism). These trigger mechanisms may standardize and automate surgical site infection surveillance triggering.

Abstract:
Metallatranes (M = Si, Ge, Sn) have been studied intensively during 50 years and have many applications in various domains namely physics, biology, medicine and so on. However their electrochemical properties were poorly studied up to date. In the present work, new metallatranes have been synthesized and characterized using different approaches and techniques (organic synthesis, cyclic voltammetry, preparative electrolysis, EPR, spectroelectrochemistry, cyclic voltammetry coupled with EPR, NMR, GC-MS). Several novel structures of metallatranes have been obtained and validated by XRD. Electrochemical measurements show that the electrooxidation of metallatranes occurs via electrochemically reversible one-electron transfer resulting in the corresponding cation radicals (CRs), detected by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis spectroscopy and real-time EPR spectroscopy. The spin delocalization in these paramagnetic species has been characterized and supported by DFT calculations. We focused on the electronic properties of metallatranes and on various bonding systems between pentacoordinated silicon and N atom including the substituents.

Abstract:
Selective application of herbicide in agricultural cropping systems provides both economic and environmental benefits. Implementation of this technology requires knowledge of the location and density of weed species within a crop. In this study, two image classification techniques (Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC)) are compared for accuracy in weed/crop species discrimination. In the summer of 2005, high spatial resolution (1.25mm) ground-based hyperspectral image data were acquired over field plots of three crop species seeded with two weed species. Image data were segmented using a threshold technique to identify vegetation for classification. The ANNs consistently outperformed MLC in single-date and multitemporal classification accuracy. With advancements in imaging technology and computer processing speed, these network models would constitute an option for real-time detection and mapping of weeds for the implementation of site-specific herbicide management.<br>xii, 106 leaves : ill.
