Abstract:
Abstract Building an embedded system from an idea to a product is a slow and expensive process requiring a lot of expertise. Depending on the developer’s expertise, the required quantity and price level of the final product, and the time and money available for development, the developer can build a device from different granularity of components, ranging from ready-made platforms, kits, and modules to individual components. Generally, solutions requiring less expertise, time and money produce products with higher production costs. The main contribution of this thesis is the EOC (Embedded Object Concept) and Atomi II Framework. EOC utilizes common object-oriented methods used in software by applying them to small electronic modules, which create complete functional entities. The conceptual idea of the embedded objects is implemented with the Atomi II framework, which contains several techniques for making the EOC a commercially feasible implementation. The EOC and the Atomi II Framework decreases the difficulty level of making embedded systems by enabling a use of ready-made modules to build systems. It enables automatic conversion of a device made from such modules into an integrated PCB, lowering production costs compared to other modular approaches. Furthermore, it also enables an automatic production tester generation due to its modularity. These properties lower the number of skills required for building an embedded system and quicken the path from an idea to a commercially applicable device. A developer can also build custom modules of his own if he possesses the required expertise. The test cases demonstrate the Atomi II Framework techniques in real world applications, and demonstrate the capabilities of Atomi objects. According to our test cases and estimations, an Atomi based device becomes approximately 10% more expensive than a device built from individual components, but saves up to 50% time, making it feasible to manufacture up to 10-50k quantities with this approach.

As microprocessors have become smaller and cheaper, they are embedded in more and more non-computing products, such as washing machines, elevators, MP3 players and printers. It has been estimated that these products consumed 99% of the worldwide production of microprocessors. I In general, "Embedded system" means a computer system sitting inside a product other than a computer to make the product more flexible and controllable. For example, a modem washing machine has a control software system to execute different "washing programs" for different types of clothes. Embedded systems usually have strict requirements on response time, and the response must be generated within a finite and specified period, though depending on the situation, the time could be within a few milliseconds or a few seconds. Because of the special requirement on response time, embedded systems are sometimes called real-time systems. Embedded systems can be divided into two categories: hard and soft, according to the degree of required "timeliness" 2 . A hard embedded system is stringent on that the response must occur within a specified timeline. Typical examples are flight-control systems and missile control systems. A soft embedded system is less strict: response time is important but the system still can function properly given occasionally missed deadline. Examples are mobile phones, printers, and medical devices. This paper is only concerned with development of the soft-embedded systems, and hence the term "embedded systems" in the paper means "soft embedded systems".

Abstract:
Context:The interface development is increasing in complexity and applications with a lot of functionalities that are reliable, understandable and easy to use have to be developed. To be able to compete, the time-to-market has to be short and cost effective. The development process is important and there are a lot of aspects that can be improved. The needs of the development and the knowledge among the developers are key factors. Here code reuse, standardization and the usability of the development tool plays an important role which could have a lot of positive impact on the development process and the quality of the final product. Objectives: A framework for describing important properties for HMI development tools is presented. A representative collection of two development tools are selected, described and based on the experiences from the case study its applicability is mapped to the evaluation framework. Methods: Interviews were made with HMI developers to get information from the field. Following that, a case study of two different development tools were made to highlight the pros and cons of each tool. Results: The properties presented in the evaluation framework are that the toolkit should be open for multiple platforms, accessible for the developer, it should support custom templates, require non-extensive coding knowledge and be reusable. The evaluated frameworks shows that it is hard to meet all the demands. Conclusions: To find a well suited development toolkit is not an easy task. The choice should be made depending on the needs of the HMI applications and the available development resources.

Erlang is a powerful and robust language for writing massively parallel and distributed applications. With the introduction of multi-core ARM processors, the embedded market will be looking for ways of taking advantage of the newfound opportunities for parallelism. To support the development of embedded applications using Erlang we want to provide Erlang and Embedded developers with a run-time system suited for embedded devices. We have managed to shrink the disk size of the Erlang runtime system by a factor of 42 without affecting the stability of the Erlang virtual machine. It is our firm belief that Erlang can play a vital role in the future of embedded systems.

A platform based approach for product development allows companies to eliminate redundancies, efficiently utilize its resources and provide products for a wider market. The basic idea is to develop and share key components and to introduce new technologies in as many products as possible. The automobile industry has for long used the concept of product platforms and has successfully achieved savings in development costs and seen a growth in sales and market share. By creating a common software platform, this concept can be applied to software development for embedded systems where software modules and applications can be shared across products within a product family. This provides better code reuse and increases standardizations across products. This thesis will examine how the concept of platforms can be applied to software development from the viewpoint of the telecommunications industry. By using the power of a common software platform, telecommunication equipment makers can accelerate product delivery and introduce new technologies to a wider range of customers. With the right strategy, they can also make their products into platforms that serve as a foundation on which other companies can develop products and offer their services.

Dohmke, Thomas. "Test-driven development of embedded control systems : application in an automotive collision prevention system." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2008. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/239/.

Full text
Abstract:
With test-driven development (TDD) new code is not written until an automated test has failed, and duplications of functions, tests, or simply code fragments are always removed. TDD can lead to a better design and a higher quality of the developed system, but to date it has mainly been applied to the development of traditional software systems such as payroll applications. This thesis describes the novel application of TDD to the development of embedded control systems using an automotive safety system for preventing collisions as an example. The basic prerequisite for test-driven development is the availability of an automated testing framework as tests are executed very often. Such testing frameworks have been developed for nearly all programming languages, but not for the graphical, signal driven language Simulink. Simulink is commonly used in the automotive industry and can be considered as state-of-the-art for the design and development of embedded control systems in the automotive, aerospace and other industries. The thesis therefore introduces a novel automated testing framework for Simulink. This framework forms the basis for the test-driven development process by integrating the analysis, design and testing of embedded control systems into this process. The thesis then shows the application of TDD to a collision prevention system. The system architecture is derived from the requirements of the system and four software components are identified, which represent problems of particular areas for the realisation of control systems, i.e. logical combinations, experimental problems, mathematical algorithms, and control theory. For each of these problems, a concept to systematically derive test cases from the requirements is presented. Moreover two conventional approaches to design the controller are introduced and compared in terms of their stability and performance. The effectiveness of the collision prevention system is assessed in trials on a driving simulator. These trials show that the system leads to a significant reduction of the accident rate for rear-end collisions. In addition, experiments with prototype vehicles on test tracks and field tests are presented to verify the system’s functional requirements within a system testing approach. Finally, the new test-driven development process for embedded control systems is evaluated in comparison to traditional development processes.

Abstract:
Innovative functions in cars, such as active safety systems and advanced driver assistance systems, are realized as embedded systems. The development of such automotive embedded systems is challenging in several respects: the product typically has several crosscutting system properties, experts of diverse disciplines need to cooperate and appropriate processes and tools are required to improve the effciency and the complexity management of development. Model-driven development captures the architecture of the embedded system in the form of models with well-defined metamodels. Model-driven development provides a partial solution to some of the challenges of embedded systems development, but it also introduces new challenges. Models do not remain static, but they change over time and evolve. Evolution can change models in two ways: (1) by making design decisions and adding, deleting or changing model elements, or (2) by reusing models in different tools. We propose support for both aspects of model evolution. (1) When models are changed, the design decisions and the justification for the change are usually neither captured nor documented in a systematic way. As a result, important information about the model is lost, making the model more difficult to understand, which hampers model evolution and maintenance. To support model evolution, design decisions need to be captured explicitly using an appropriate representation. This representation reduces the overhead of capturing design decisions, keeps the model and the design decision documentation consistent and links the design decision documentation to the model. As a result, the captured design decisions provide a record of the model evolution and the rationale of the evolution. (2) Several models and views are used to describe an embedded system in different life cycle stages and from the viewpoints of the involved disciplines. To create the various models, a number of specialized development tools are used. These tools are usually disconnected, so the models cannot be transferred between different tools. Thus, models may become inconsistent, which hampers understandability of the models and increases the cost of development. We present a model-based tool integration approach that uses a common metamodel in combination with model transformation technology to build bridges between different development tools. We apply this approach in a case study and integrate several tools for automotive embedded systems development: A systems engineering tool, a safety engineering tool and a simulation tool. As a part of future work, we plan to extend the tool integration approach to exchange not only models but also the attached documentation of design decisions. As a result, the design decision documentation is linked consistently to corresponding model elements of the various tool-specific models, supporting model evolution across several development tools

Abstract:
Reconfigurable and dynamic computer architecture is an exciting area of research that is rapidly expanding to meet the requirements of compute intense real and non-real time applications in key areas such as cryptography, signal/radar processing and other areas. To meet the demands of such applications, a parallel single-chip heterogeneous Hybrid Data/Command Architecture (HDCA) has been proposed. This single-chip multiprocessor architecture system is reconfigurable at three levels: application, node and processor level. It is currently being developed and experimentally verified via a three phase prototyping process. A first phase prototype with very limited functionality has been developed. This initial prototype was used as a base to make further enhancements to improve functionality and performance resulting in a second phase virtual prototype, which is the subject of this thesis. In the work reported here, major contributions are in further enhancing the functionality of the system by adding additional processors, by making the system reconfigurable at the node level, by enhancing the ability of the system to fork to more than two processes and by designing some more complex real/non-real time applications which make use of and can be used to test and evaluate enhanced and new functionality added to the architecture. A working proof of concept of the architecture is achieved by Hardware Description Language (HDL) based development and use of a Virtual Prototype of the architecture. The Virtual Prototype was used to evaluate the architecture functionality and performance in executing several newly developed example applications. Recommendations are made to further improve the system functionality.

Abstract:
The dismounted infantry system is a man wearable system with intelligent tutoring tool used to assess training. The tasks used to assess training for the intelligent tutoring were: (1) move as a member of a fireteam, (2) enter and clear a room, and (3) report battlefield information. The soldier wearing the simulation system acts as a member of a fireteam to conduct a virtual mission. The soldier's teammates are computer generated entities to conduct the mission. Soldiers were surveyed on the tasks assessed as well as the features of the system. Soldiers were also surveyed on tasks they felt needed to be added to the tutoring functions of the system. The intelligent tutor system and training in virtual reality was generally accepted by the participants. The general consensus was the technology needed additional refinement to provide a better training environment. Most felt that working with Semi-Automated Forces (SAF) entities made the scenario more difficult to execute. The parameters established for successful completion of the movement and reporting tasks were too strict and hindered the experience for the participant. Locomotion is another aspect that deserves further research. Moving the locomotion controls to the feet would free the soldier from having to accomplish multiple tasks with only two hands. Future research should concentrate on locomotion methods and controls, as well as only using human participants for all unit members.

For satisfying with the rapid increase of bandwidth demand, every telecommunication company had built many various Metropolitan Area Networks and Access optical Networks at the present stage. In optical networks, the existing Network Management System (NMS) fails to accurately distinguish the fault point of Optical Loss of Signal (OLOS) between fiber breaks and equipment faults. Hence, there are numerous unnecessary alarms and it is more difficult to locate the fault point, making it a significant issue for the network manager. This paper proposes a cost-effective embedded scheme in the fiber monitoring system for this issue, and the scheme has been implemented and tested in the existing APTG optical networks. The results of field-test show that it improves network stability and system performance of the telecommunication systems.

The application of the embedded system can be divided into the hardware and the software. The hardware includes the system-on-chip (SoC) and peripheral components (screen, memory and storage card etc.), and the CPU of the embedded system is usually ARM. The software includes the operating system, the driver and the application program. The software will exist by firmware. We will port the embedded system into the development board, and use the open source of Linux to develop the embedded operating system needed. The embedded Linux system with application can be developed for single or multiple functions. The embedded system will exist in many kinds of the intelligent devices in the future. User can understand the information through the image from the device directly, and these devices can communicate each other by the connection of the network. In this paper, the emphasis is implementation of transmitting image. After the web camera receives the image, the data of the image will be delivered to embedded system through the wireless network, and the image will be displayed on the color TFT LCD. In addition, we propose the way to reduce size and to port in the operating system, the driver, the video output library and applications. In module design, we can develop the system according to the function that we need. The product will be shortened the time to market, and it will achieve the requirement that includes low cost and high performance.

Motion controller is a key component of intelligent robots. The performance of motion control directly affects the capabilities of motion, coordination, and sensing. However, most of small size humanoid robots use the single processor as motion controllers. The single processor based motion controller may just process simple and dedicated tasks due to limited processor performance and periphery integration capabilities. Consequently, it is necessary to introduce a personal computer to deal with the gait training and image based control algorithms. According o these considerations, this thesis proposes an embedded system based humanoid robot controller, and it is responsible of dealing with the functions of motion planning and control, sensor data collection, robot posture capture, human-robot interaction interface, and gait pattern recording. Finally, the proposed motion controller is implemented based on a XSCALE embedded platform. The embedded robot motion controller is further used to control a commercial biped humanoid robot to verify the functions and feasibility of the proposed embedded robot motion controller.

From rapid development of information techniques and personal computers, PC- based control applications have noticeable progressing in industry. In order to assure that PC-based control has more attribute of real-time performance and smaller size, good portability, variability and reliability, the embedded system and embedded operating system are available in the market. This thesis focuses on development and application of embedded systems. The first part covers force control with flexible boundary. Building the control system with Windows CE in PC-based, we developed the driver for the data acquisition board to implement the force control system. The second part explores the development of intelligent robots. Robot behavior has two modes: obstacle avoiding and target following. Two DC motors are used for controlling the robotic to go forward, go backward and change direction. The sensor system is combined with infrared proximity detector、optical interrupters and infrared object detectors, the main function of sensor system is getting acquainted with the change of external environment or target to achieve the function of avoiding obstacles and target following. Windows CE plays the brain of the robot to do complicated calculations and make decisions. The function retrieves the distance between the infrared sensor and the target, and then makes the adequate decision to avoid or follow it. The development of an embedded real-time system is a complicated task. Not only facing the same difficulty in general purpose system but also the stringent timing constraints on critical tasks. Using Reusing technique for system development is a shortcut. In this paper, a framework-oriented approach is presented to help efficiently design embedded real-time systems. The approach is based on an object-oriented framework, which is a reusable design expressed as a set of abstract classes and the way their instances collaborate. We presented our framework construct in two levels: collaboration and structures. At the collaboration level, the framework consists of five components, namely Analyzer, Task Composer, Scheduler, OS Manager and Code Generator. At the structure level, the framework is divided into three packages: UsrApp, RTService and OSWrap. The designer inherited the framework to customize their application. The structures of application objects derived from the subclasses inherited from the superclasses in the framework were well-defined. The robust relationships between application objects inherit of the relationships between superclasses in the framework. Using framework in embedded real-time system development can shorten the product development cycle and reduce the cost of maintenance thereby reduce the time-to-market of products.

This thesis we propose a new fast learning OCR system. Optical character recognition research has been developed for a long time and there are many techniques which provide very high identification rate. But almost all methods with high identication rate need cost many time in training. One major drawback of the existing methods is the long training time. Speeding up the training time for most techniques usually suffers the high reduction on the recognition rate. In this work, we present a neural network based approach to largely reduce the training time while maintain the high recognition rate. The main idea is to perform a preprocessing stage on the training data prior to the neural network training and use a template matching technique in the recognition stage. We have implemented the algorithms using different grouping features. The experimental results on real images have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method. Finally we implemented our algorithm in DSP and optimizated our codes.

The RS-232 and GPIO interface programs of the embedded devices are finished by Linux C and Shell scripts, respectively, in this thesis. To understand the reliability of these two interface programs, these two programs are applied to combining the Advantech embedded device, i.e. RSB 4210, and various based on the microprocessors’ circuits. The general-purpose input/output (GPIO) is a standard for parallel communication transmission of data. Compared with RS-232, the GPIO construction and cost are non-competitive. But, GPIOs’ data communication efficiency is relatively good than the RS-232 because the RS-232 is other standard for serial communication transmission of data. A shell scripts deigned to be run by the command line interpreter. So, the shell scripts is proper used in the GPIOs’ because the GPIO has only two output signals including the high potential and low potential. The program of RS-232 interface is more complicated with the GPIO. So, the Linux C is proper used in the RS-232. The Ubuntu 10.04 is first installed in the PC in this thesis because the Linux C programs are compiled on the Ubuntu 10.04 and then executed in the embedded devices. And, the shell scripts and Linux C are used to finish the GPIO and RS-232 interface programs, respectively. The performance of these two programs are also discussed in this these.

The main contribution of this thesis is to develop an embedded speaker recognition system with Asymmetric Multiprocessing architecture, and propose an improved ANN algorithm for speaker identification applications. Artificial Neural Network process emphasizes overall features with small area vocal signal characteristics. Improved ANN model can be used for estimated probabilities and provide a high speaker identification rate based on Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ) trained codebooks. System implementation tasks can be divided into to System on Programmable Chip design (SOPC), Parallel Computer Architecture and Hardware Software Co-design. The proposed system is implemented on ARM-based and NIOS II-based embedded platforms to perform the speaker recognition function. The strengths of different processors are implemented in order to improve the overall system performance. The experimental results show that the proposed improved ANN model gives a higher speaker identification and verification rate than the LVQ and GMM trained codebooks. The improved ANN model utilizes the low computational complexity of LVQ. This is important when the speaker identification is implemented on a computation limited embedded system. The system can reach the real time signal processing capability, while provide the capabilities of complicated GUI.

Embedded systems are everywhere in our lives. Display and touch module always play the important role in many applications of embedded devices. With the development in flexible electronics technology, embedded platform has broken the previous non-bendable concept. To respond to the development of new ``soft" platform device, the flexible display technology has gradually entered the popular stage of development. Many international companies are studying these emerging technology and applications recently, such as South Korea's Samsung, LG, Japan's Sony and Taiwan's ITRI. There are many studies on this emerging application project, but they focus on the theoretical basis of some research is to further study the user interaction method design or the new type of application system design. However, a new type of application how to integrate development environment is very few paper mentioned. This thesis specifically focuses on the procedure to migrate the system for emerging application, and the successfully migrate Android system to RSX platform. In additional we also develop some kernel driver to RSX platform for integrating more applications. In this thesis, we focused on building a Linux embedded system that provides a well-constructed platform for developing wireless applications. It is known that GNU/Linux combines plenty of functions and libraries; the whole system is too complicated to be understood. Instead, we stem from the embedded Linux, look into the details of system operations, and then investigate the relevant and important issues for developing Linux-based applications. Topics will include the kernel of the Linux operating system, the structure of file system, the setup of a boot loader, and so forth. In the implementation aspect, we apply the embedded Linux platform we built to the design and realization of a practical wireless communication application, called “Mobile Positioning/Monitoring system”. Starting from scratch, the thesis builds a platform and equips with GPS and GPRS functions together. The system can be used for mobile positioning and field strength measuring. Through the implementation, we present not only the success of the applicability of our embedded Linux platform on developing an application, but also show that Linux on embedded systems has great cross-platform capability and good expansibility.

In conventional research, personal computer (PC) in most cases is the main processing system for the monitoring of physiology signals. Although PC-based systems have many advantages, they are bulky, heavy, and cannot meet the requirement of portability. In this research the focus is on the development of modules that combine the monitoring functions in one single chip.We investigate the use of single-chip embedded systems for the monitor and analysis of physiology signals. ARM processor is used to control various sensors that measure key physiology signals such as body temperature, blood pressure and pulses. The sensors are connected to the processor via GPIO interface. Taking advantages of such a system, we can not only save a significant amount of time for commuting between a patient’s residence and hospital, but also provide instant diagnosis and medical advice. In addition, physiology data collected by the system can be kept in a database to allow long-term tracking of a patient’s physical condition. This is valuable for early diagnosis and medical treatment, and forms the basis for preventive medical care. In the future, this system may incorporate GPS and other wireless modules so that real-time physiology signals and the current location of a user can be transmitted to a hospital. With the development of advanced technology and the rapid progress of the design and the manufacturing technique of semiconductors, the performance of the microprocessor and peripheral control chips have been enhanced and the production cost therefore has been reduced. The advancement of technology has opened the so-called post-PC age, and the necessary functions are applied and integrated into an “embedded system” to meet the needs of special purpose, low cost and integrated service. Digital cameras, cell phones and PDAs are all applications of embedded system. Therefore, based on the embedded system and the employment of 802.11b wireless networks, a management system for business use is developed. Besides the new functions developed from the computerized operating management and integrated database application, different user interface web pages are provided for different users via web pages (such as the waiters, clerks and managers of a restaurant). Moreover, the operation and management of shops will be more convenient and efficient with the cooperation of utilizing the advantages of wireless networks. The embedded system with small volume and low cost that is produced and integrated for specific functions, using Linux OS with open source as the basic software structure of system, has further been more diversified and convenient in practice. Thus, the popularity of embedded systems will become an irresistible new trend, and the technology of developing embedded Linux systems will become the advantages for competition as well. So we not only need to thoroughly understand the method and process of developing embedded Linux systems and produce the convenient management system for businesses, but also need to utilize the debug work for program development so as to shorten the developing period of products and enhance the efficiency.

An embedded system based automatic guided vehicle was developed and studied. This system is construed with an embedded system, microcontroller module, motor driving module, optical monitor module, anti-collision detecting module, battery voltage monitor module, and power regulator system. The embedded system coordinates the whole system. It reads the pre-programmed route data and then calculates and sends to microcontroller via RS-232. The microcontroller receives the command and send to correspondence I/O port. The motor driving module drives this system to motion. The motion status is detected by an optical detector module and sends back to microcontroller and embedded system. Three ultrasonic sensors were used to detect the environment change while motion. Those modules detect any barrier in front of this system while motion and send back to embedded system foe judgment. Power level detector can detect the battery status and alarm if it is at low voltage level. A high efficiency switching power regulator was used to convert battery voltage to 5 volts for control circuitry. This system can move according to the pre-programmed route. The pre-programmed data can upload via web browser. The anti-collision function was successfully verified when a barrier in front of the system.

Currently, most surveillance systems are PC-based but the cost of a PC would discourage a customer to purchase them. Hence, it would be reasonable to develop an embedded system especially for the surveillance purpose. In this way, not only the redundant devices can be removed but also the system can be tuned for surveillance. In addition, the cost reduction would make it possible for each family to have one and improve the household security and living quality. Furthermore, in most traditional image processing systems MJPEG is de factor image format although the compression rate of MJPEG might be just good enough for these applications. With the progress of hardware the H.264 standard which has higher compression rate becomes more popular. The benefits of using H.264 is that it has a higher compression rate and better image quality and makes it possible to store more in the less storage space. But H.264 needs more powerful computing capability. If the specific hardware is not adopted to accommodate H.264, the higher end processor will be required. In order to solve the two problems (high cost and low compression rate) mentioned above an embedded digital video recorder (DVR) is devised. In addition, Linux is ported to the system. USB is used as an interface for storage devices and both video and audio storage are supported. H.264 Codec (Coder-decoder) hardware is adopted to facilitate the image of better quality and higher compression rate to be delivered over the networks. While the video is stored in the H.264 format, the audio is stored in ADPCM (Adaptive Differential Pulse-code Modulation) format. In this thesis, not only Linux porting is introduced but also the system implementation is described. Keywords: Video compression, H.264, Linux, DVR, Embedded System
