Full textToday, the pedagogy of distance exchange projects based on mediated digital communication tools allows new insights into the ability of young learners with minimal competence in the target language to interact at a distance with young speakers of that language. Situated within a social constructivist and interactionist framework, the study investigates the potential of exchange projects and how they develop according to the people and resources available. Based on observations of four Franco-British partnership projects undertaken in upper primary school (ages 7-10) over one year, it investigates pupils’ learning of English or French through reciprocal exchange projects. It also seeks to identify the participants’ initial project designs and intentions (through questionnaires and interviews). The results of what transpires through the joint activities of teachers and students are examined (various data collection means were employed according to action research protocol). The data analysis follows two main hypotheses: one directed towards the social dimension of (student) exchanges and the other towards the impact on language learning. Organizational variables, as well as technical-educational, psychological and institutional variables are thus examined. Numerous characteristics of the projects observed emerged including: pupils’ taking responsibility for their learning, diversity of language production and language skills involved, coherence between the activities and the established social ties and evidence of metacognitive and metalinguistic reflection. These lead to consideration of the ways in which situated learn-ing and action foster collaboration and empowerment

Full textWe discover the former norms concerning buildings and furniture of schools in the 17th century. From that time till 1992 we observe how buildings are evolving in their look as in their arrangements. Our purpose was to explain the underlain forces. Whether they were antagonistics or complementary. Which gave an impetus to the alterations. These forces were connected with mentalities (views on education, sanitation, urbanism) and powers (local authorities, centralized authorities, doctors and architects). They were also in relation with scientific and technological progress

Full textThe thesis focuses on random composites and some specific features such as: the minimum size of a representative volume element (RVE) and the determination of effective transport properties. The main objective is to formulate a computationally efficient method which would allow for quick determination of effective properties. The effective properties of transport are considered. It is shown that this class of properties can be estimated either by performing calculations over one large sample or by averaging over a sufficient number of smaller microstructure realizations. However, for a given type of microstructure; the size of such smaller realizations can not be smaller than some critical minimum size. It is shown that this critical size of RVE is strongly affected by several parameters. These are: microstructure type, volume fractions of constituents, contrast in mechanical properties of composite phases, number of performed realizations as well as a desired accuracy. Furthermore, two separate types of representativity are introduced: geometrical representativity and representativity with respect to overall transport properties. Therefore, two distinct criteria for the minimum size of RVE are formulated based on the properties of the two-point correlation function. Comparing to other methods proposed in wide literature, the criterion formulated in the thesis gives an advantage: the condition proposed includes microstructure morphology. Therefore, in order to determine the minimum size of RVE none numerical calculations like those of FE are necessary. A validation of proposed methodology is performed on several examples of 2D microstructures

Full textDuality and robustness are two important tools in decision making process. This thesis deals with tree topics : duality for an uncertain convex conical optimization problem, duality and regularity in generalized convexity, and the maximization of the stability radius. In the first part of this work, we consider the notions of worst value and robust value of an uncertain convex conical optimization problem. We give a necessary and sufficient condition to obtain the equality between the robust value and the worst value with exactness for the worst value. We derive a sufficient condition to obtain a robust strong duality property for this problem. The second part of this work is devoted to duality and regularity of the extended real-valued functions. Two points of view are considered: the sub-level set approach and the epigraphical approach. We then extend some recent results concerning the passage from the quasi-convex duality to convex duality to the generalized convexity. We apply this theory to an optimization problem to derive a strong duality property for this problem. The third part of this work is devoted to the study of the problem of maximization of the stability radius. We define the stability radius for a decision problem under data uncertainty, and study some of its analytical properties (e.g concavity and upper semi-continuity). The robust counterpart of an uncertain optimization problem according to the stability radius is introduced. We study the relation between the solution set of this counterpart and the solution set of the robust counterpart according to the robust optimization approach. We propose a generic model of the maximization of stability radius which covers a large class of applications. We study this problem in a polyhedral case, in the case of regression and in quadratic case. In each case, we compute the stability radius and/ or transform the problem of maximization of the stability radius to a tractable problem. An application to a circular antenna design problem is given in the regression case, and an application to compute a robust estimator is provided in the quadratic case
