Abstract:
The article deals with the study of stylistic techniques and means of expression characteristic of English speech expression, the study of means and methods of communication of independent sentences, as well as phrasal units, ways to combine them into fragments and whole speech texts. The paper identifies and generalizes scientific approaches to the study of stylistic syntax techniques, analyzes syntactic constructions that have expressive potential and pragmatic orientation. It is established that the subject of syntactic stylistics is also the study of the specifics of the functioning of expressive means and techniques in complex linguistic texts. It is found that the stylistic technique is realized, as a rule, in the context of phrasal units, paragraph and whole text, and the interaction of sentence models in these contexts gives emotional and expressive meaning to the segments of speech that they form. Thus, stylistic devices based on formal and semantic interactions of several syntactic constructions or sentences in a particular context, is one of the richest sources of speech expression. These stylistic devices serve as a means of poetic syntax, and are widely used in fiction, journalism and are found in scientific language. Despite the fact that each stylistic device individually contributes to the overall expressiveness of the text, a greater effect is achieved through their interaction, and with the help of these stylistic devices, contact with the addressee is established, the emotional background and emphaticity of the text are enhanced. Therefore, expressive means and stylistic techniques of syntax, which are created both with the use of stylistically marked constructions and without their participation, are one of the richest means of stylistics of the English language. The considered cases of violation of the usual logic of syntactic connection of parts of a complex sentence, semantic differences between their usual and occasional use bring subjective motives into the text and are used with certain stylistic purposes, which due to functioning together have a greater effect.

Abstract:
The article deals with the stylistic potential of German syntactic means, their expressive–stylistic and functional–stylistic features. The study sets out to reveal the expressive syntactic means. Disorder of a proper sentence structure makes its expressiveness. In contrast to a «syntactic tension», the article analyses a «syntactic loosening» of a normative sentence structure as a current trend in German syntax, as a source of syntactic expressiveness and the most productive instrument of simplification of a sentence structure. Thus, it assimilates to the structure of the everyday language. Syntactic «loosening» of a normative sentence structure is formed by a simple hypotaxis, a failure of closed–in constructions and a lack of grammatical agreement among sentence parts. The study is carried out in the context of historical dynamics. The renunciation of a difficult multi-stage hypotaxis but using of a simple sentence as block structures leads to expression saving and easily understanding. Each of the blocks has a large amount of information. Parts of the sentence are in the same line and are united with nominal juxtaposition. Their development is closely related to the nominalization trend. The influence of colloquial speech on the literary German and its written form, closing to natural speech lead to the renunciation of closed–in constructions. The author proves that the removal of grammatical structures isn't new for the modern literary German, but it presents the perfectly sound tendency. As a result of this study, there is a conclusion that the modification of the grammatical structure isn't the result of an abrupt shift or radical turn but it is a natural continuation of a dynamic process.

Abstract:
This paper aims to analyze and interpret the linguistic and stylistic means by which the world of the novel Women. Voices. by Jasmina Musabegović is built. The paper analyzes and interprets the novel’s spoken language stylization, as its main stylistic feature. It is based on the assumption that orality, as a linguistic-stylistic feature of the novel, is primarily realized at the syntactic-stylistic level. In this direction, the elements of expressive syntax, such as spoken (oral) sentence length, elliptical, nominative, and fragmented sentences, as well as syntactic repetitions and accumulations, are especially explored. The mentioned syntactic-stylistic means are investigated to point out their stylistic potential in the revitalization of the tonal, rhythmic, intonation, and intensity values of the spoken language, based on which novelistic voices are generated as the narrative subject of the novel. Also, exclamatory and expressive interrogative sentences are explored in the paper as significant means of conveying emotional-expressive (affective) and intensifying the semantic values of a sentence. In doing so, it is particularly indicated that interrogative sentences, in addition to appearing as elements of expressive syntax, have a significant opening (cataphoric) value in developing the novel's narrative content. In addition, the paper points out the stylistic possibilities and values of the vernacular idiom in the stylization of novelistic expression with folk expression.

Abstract:
Expressive inversion is a crucial element of modern political discourse, where politicians widely use it to enhance emotional impact and draw attention to key ideas of their political speeches. The aim of the article is determination expressive inversion pragmatic potential in modern political discourse. Expressive inversion draws the listeners’ attention to the part of the sentence that the speaker considers the most important or informative. The relevance of our study is based on the necessity of researching the use of expressive inversion in current political discourse, such as the inaugural speeches of US presidents. This study may also enrich research on the political speeches of American presidents and have some implications for the analysis of political discourse. The research methods of the article combine the discourse analysis method, the style analysis method, the pure sampling method, and the comparative method. In our study, six inaugural speeches by four U.S. presidents (Democrats Barack Obama, and Joseph Biden, and Republicans George W. Bush and Donald Trump) were subjected to stylistic analysis, with a focus on the use of expressive inversion as a stylistic device. Conclusions. The study has shown that in the inaugural speeches of US presidents, being an essential segment of political discourse, inversion performs not only the so-called universal functions (logical, grammatical, communicative, pragmatic, and structural-semantic) identified by researchers for any text but also expressive, emotional-evaluative, stylistic, and figurative-semantic ones. The style of inaugural addresses created employing inversion fulfills these tasks and brings political discourse closer to journalism and fiction discourse. Intentional change of word order, contributing to the formation of a metaphor or epithet, is aimed at creating a vivid image in the addressee’s mind, evoking emotions and forming evaluative judgments desirable for the addressee. Thus, inversion, performing expressive, emotional-evaluative, stylistic, or figurative-semantic functions, has a powerful cognitive impact, turning it into an effective tool of persuasion. Inversion functions do not appear in their pure form. Instead, they often complement each other, creating a complex layered impact. However, the expressive function is the most frequently used, underscoring its importance in conveying persuasive and dynamic content in presidential speeches. The study focuses on how expressive inversion is used in the inaugural speeches of U.S. presidents. According to the research results, all the US presidents of the 21st century have used expressive inversion in their inaugural speeches. Trump’s inaugural speech had the highest percentage of expressive inversion (25%). The speeches of both Bush’s inaugurals show relatively lower occurrences than the others. The frequency of its use in the presidents’ inaugural speeches suggests the choice of a communicative strategy that defines the purpose of influencing the audience and forms the personal image of the politician. In Obama’s speeches, inversion is the basis of the integration strategy, emphasizing the unity of Americans and the relationship between the people and the government, creating the president’s image as a ‘father of the nation’. Trump uses the inversion to oppose himself to his predecessors, emphasizing the need for radical change, creating the image of a ‘savior of the nation’. In Bush’s speeches, inversion is part of metaphorical constructions that create vivid images of freedom and democracy, forming a strategy of idealization that strengthens the president’s image as the ‘emotional intelligence of the nation’. Using simple syntax and appealing to religious themes, Biden uses inversion as a means of fascination, forming the image of the ‘conscience of the nation’. Thus, in Obama’s and Trump’s speeches, the high frequency of inversion use indicates not only the intention to have an emotional impact or influence the audience’s opinion but also the desire to create a logical chain at the cognitive level, i.e., to form a certain conviction and induce a specific action. The speeches of Bush and Biden are much less full of inversion. Inversion here is only a stylistic component of inaugural rhetoric.

Abstract:
We analyze the particular functions of such metaphors as synesthesia and personification in a literary text. The purpose of study is to identify the stylistic potential of synesthesia and personification in a literary text. The relevance of topic is due to the need to investigate the stylistic functions of the above metaphors in the prose of Austrian authors, little-known and therefore insufficiently researched in domestic stylistics. The material of research is the prose of Austrian authors. In particular, the intentional selection of works created at different times allowed to better focus on metaphors featured by structures and functions. We explore the stylistic potential of metaphors, which is understood as the ability of these linguistic means to implement certain stylistic functions. We conclude as follows: 1) the language of Austrian writers of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries is characterized by metaphors that make up the aesthetic value of their works; 2) an important role in achieving the figurativeness of a literary text is played by the expressive means of the language, in particular, synesthesia and personification; 3) these varieties of metaphor have sufficient stylistic potential to implement the main functions in the artistic style, namely, characterological, descriptive, emotive and evaluative; 4) the metaphor is characterized by multifunctionality, which makes it possible to combine the description with the tasks of characterization, expression and evaluation. The data obtained constitute the theoretical significance of study and as well can be used in teaching philology students.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the functioning of language units in today’s information space in the conditions of a large-scale war against Ukrainian statehood. Extraneous factors become decisive in the selection of orthographic, lexical, syntactic, and stylistic means for semantic, evaluative, and figurative juxtaposition of war and peace, foreign and own, enemy and vital national values. Negatively evaluated rational and expressive units form a dictionary of low expression of nominations of the enemy, and positively evaluated — a dictionary of high expression for the verbal expression of phenomena of national resistance in the struggle to preserve one’s own identity. The core of both evaluation paradigms is socio-political vocabulary, which in the context acquires new semantic and stylistic connotations. In the language of mass communication, the processes of creating a new socio-political terminology based on expressive vocabulary take place, and terminology becomes the basic element for the acquisition of an expressive connotation by a word. The basis of creating a journalistic dictionary of linguistic and psychological resistance to war is the stylistic potential of language: epithets, metaphors, comparisons with transparent figurative semantics. The most expressive means in journalistic texts are metaphors, which form a transparent psychological image of the nation in the context of non-verbal factors. Today’s activated language resources enable one of the most important functions of mass communication — the formation of the national-linguistic consciousness of society. Keywords: rational vocabulary, expressive vocabulary, socio-political vocabulary, positively valued units, negatively valued units, semantics, stylistic connotation

Abstract:
The author of the proposed material emphasizes that the linguistic and stylistic organization of the artistic text has been of interest to linguists for a long time. However, the peculiarities of a poetic narrative expressive means functioning have not been deeply investigated so far. Therefore, the study of language units that testify to the stylistic potential in the poetic scope of Anatoliy Pererva is relevant since the writer’s linguistic world was not an object of a separate scientific analysis. The purpose of the investigation is to characterize the peculiarities of the representation of stylistic means of lexical and syntactic nature in the poetic works by Anatoliy Pererva based on the material of his collection “Nebesna yasnist”. The realization of the defined goal involves the analysis of lexical and grammatical means of organizing the writer’s poetic narrative, the consideration of syntactic methods of his poetic language expressiveness, and the clarification of the stylistic potential of the revealed artistic and expressive means in the formation of the linguistic fabric of the poetic text. Therefore, the object of research is the language of Anatoliy Pererva's poetic collection “Nebesna yasnist”. The subject of the study is linguistic and artistic expressive and pictorial means of organizing the language fabric of a poetic work, which have a lexical and syntactic origin. The researcher states that stylistic component of a lexical and grammatical and syntactic nature are an organic part of the writer's poetic language space. And in particular, those based on the repetition of components (polyptoton, adnomination, prosapodosis, antanaclasis, homeoteleuton, anaphora, epiphora,), opposition (antithesis, oxymoron), and accumulation (gradation). The scientist concludes that the mentioned figurative and expressive means have a powerful stylistic potential and contribute to the reproduction of the main motives of the considered collection (the rapidity of life, thoughts about the end of the earthly journey, love for mother and faith in God).

Abstract:
The article discusses the ways and means of ensuring a successful and effective language communication. In the focus of attention is the part of stylistic factors in realizing the pragmatic purposefulness of an utterance. For analysis were chosen sentences built up according to the model N1 – Vcop – Nv, where N1 and Nv are characterized by the seme [+ person], and Nv gives “the name of the person”, formed by way of derivation from a verb. The results of the analysis show that expressive and stylistic potential of such sentences is realized by way of both its semantic and structure: –names with prefixes and suffixes that serve as means of expressing the categories of intensification, stylistic connotation, positive or negative appraisal; –names formed by way of metaphorisation; –names-occasionalisms; –the model nominal component modifications; –the utterance ironic implication; –link verbs with the meaning of intention, wish, subjective appraisal; –the model communicative variants: ellipsis, parcellation, inversion, isolation, verbless predicates.

Abstract:
Stefan Mitrov Ljubiša, a talented narrator and stylist, has achieved a complete harmony between motifs, themes and the manner of narration. He has achieved not only a vertical harmony, but also a horizontal one which relates between the sound and the meaning of a word. Various verb forms, their synonyms as well as great possibilities of their combining have significantly enabled creation of this harmony. The language of Stefan Mitrov Ljubiša has a very significant stylistic potential. The various meanings and multi-layered structures of the verb forms are the product of the affective attitude of the narrator which stems from the aspiration of the narrator to use the most expressive verb form (the verb form and its synonym). The subtle shading of the logical and grammatical and stylistic functions of the verb forms creates a very strong expression and rhythmicity.

Theoretical meaning: The study found that English-language advertising discourse is a complex communicative phenomenon that is realized in a certain media space by the most effective means that combine socio-cultural and psycholinguistic features. The main characteristics of English-language advertising discourse, as well as psychological and linguistic strategies of influence inherent in it, are outlined. The concept of advertising text is presented, its structure and types are investigated. It is established that the strengthening of the influence of the advertising slogan on the consumer is possible due to special stylistic means at the phonetic, lexical and syntactic levels. The most typical stylistic means of expression at the lexical level are metaphor, epithet, hyperbole, personification, pun, comparison and metonymy. At the syntactic level, antithesis, rhetorical question, repetition, parallelism and inversion are distinguished. The phonetic level is indicated by the use of rhyme, alliteration and assonance. In addition, such methods of translation of advertising messages as lack of translation, literal translation, adaptation and revision are analyzed. The results of our study show that the adaptation strategy is the most common. Transcreation and its role in achieving the communicative-pragmatic goal in the translation of advertising messages are considered. A number of recommendations for the translation of English-language advertising slogans with stylistic means of expression, as well as a series of exercises to train the professional skills of the translator of English-language advertising texts have been developed.

Pérez, Portilla K. N. "Redressing discrimination through expressive means : weaknesses and potential of anti-discrimination law." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1335906/.

Abstract:
Using critical theory, feminist studies, interdisciplinary social science literature and a microcomparison of legislation from the UK and Mexico, including their international and regional sources, this thesis argues that there is no adequate analysis of the legal dimensions associated with the cultural aspects of discrimination such as demeaning stereotypical representation in the media. This is in spite of the fact that various social science disciplines; international instruments; media selfregulatory codes and indeed the targets of such practices through the organised civil society working against discrimination, have pointed out that demeaning and stereotypical images and messages can cause a harm and be discriminatory. Arguing that discrimination overall operates at interacting and overlapping levels; structural, institutional and personal levels as well as the cultural, the thesis is built on both the need for and potential of anti-discrimination law to protect targeted groups against ‘the printed and audiovisual production and reproduction of images and messages that use demeaning stereotypes, ridicule and denigrate people on the grounds of their belonging to a disadvantaged group’. The thesis proposes and explores the use of the analytical tool, ‘Discrimination through Expressive Means’ (DEM) as a vehicle with which to address and redress what it argues constitutes this form of discrimination. The comparison between Mexico and the UK is functional because both jurisdictions encounter and have addressed DEM although they have not recognised it as such. It is also profitable because these two jurisdictions have developed different ways of understanding and responding to the same harm which allows for an exploration of their respective underpinnings, advantages and disadvantages. The research provides elements with which to begin a theoretical analysis of the harm created through DEM and develops general principles useful for recognising DEM as a justiciable harm in order that bad speech may be combated with more speech.

Abstract:
In recent years the concept of dematerialization has had an effect on design professions that rely on materiality for its manifestation. This process has diminished the unique characteristics of design, but through the investigation of making as integral part of the design process, the creative identity and status of design can be strengthened again. This dissertation proposes a parallel process which integrates the act of making into the conventional design process, to address both the material and immaterial qualities of a space. The focus of the study is to investigate and determine a new spatial language as the digital and physical realms are merging together to create the concept of a cybrid space. The Boukunde archive holds opportunity for this investigation to express the new character of a cybrid space. Characteristics of both the paper archive and a digital archive are extracted to inform and define the re-representation of the archive in its contemporary context. Paper at present does not yet have a clearly defined spatial language in the built environment therefore through the exploration of this unconventional material in an innovative way, creates the opportunity for a new interaction and experience. Paper becomes a symbol of the old paper archive that has been re-interpreted in the cybrid archive where this new space embodies qualities of both the physical realm and the digital realm that are experienced in novel ways. The paper installation becomes the visual link in the space which captures the essence of the architectural drawing archive.<br>In onlangse jare het die konsep van dematerialisering 'n invloed op die ontwerp beroepe gehad. Hierdie proses het die unieke eienskappe van ontwerp onderdruk, maar deur die ondersoek van die Research Through Making metodiek as integrale deel van die ontwerpproses, kan die kreatiewe identiteit en status van ontwerp weer versterk word. Die doel van die verhandeling is om weg te beweeg van konvensionele ontwerp prosesse, deur die proses van maak te versterk sodat die materi?le en nie-materi?le eienskappe meer geintegreer kan word in die ruimtelike uitkoms. Abstract:
Camargo Guarnieri is perhaps the most significant Brazilian composer after Heitor Villa-Lobos. His work Momentos is the culmination of Guarnieri’s efforts as a composer for the piano. It reveals the composer’s compositional essence through an intimate and expressive character, and a distillation of form and style. The scope of this dissertation provides musicians who are interested in performing Momentos with a theoretical analysis and commentary of the expressive quality of the individual pieces. Momentos displays a highly chromatic and contrapuntal language that incorporates elements of Brazilian nationalism—i.e., stylistic aspects derived from modinha, toada, and lundu— and nineteenth-century compositional techniques such as harmonic ambiguity and linear chromaticism. A performance of this work, in the form of a recording, is included.<br>School of Music

This monograph deals with the problem of functioning peculiarities of graphic expressive means and grammar means in the language of modern Russian advertising. This research work treats the advertising discourse as a composite indirect speech act. Active use of adverbial modifiers of manner — deverbatives, elliptical and indefinite personal one-member sentences is characteristic of modern advertising texts. A most distinguishing feature of a modern advertising text is a mixture of Cyrillic and Latin fonts that contributes to the manifestation of an expressive potential of the application. &#x0D; The monograph is aimed at students of Philology, students major in Management and Marketing, masters, postgraduates, staff of higher educational establishments and all those who are interested in the Russian language.

Abstract:
Glamour is an elusive aspect of cinematic style. This book critically examines previous scholarship on glamour; defines the concept as a compound of artifice, allure, and magic; and examines the phenomenon at work in the genre of the film musical. The focus is on the role of music in representing glamour, and the stylistic and semiotic conventions by which glamour is embodied in sound. The book develops an analytical framework that applies across media, the better to appreciate music’s collaborative role within multimedia spectacle. First, glamour is situated as one of a handful of “style modes” orienting stylistic treatment in musical numbers. Second, glamour is shown to blend four distinct aesthetic parameters: sensuousness, restraint, elevation, and sophistication. Instead of being interpreted in relation to film narrative, the musical number is treated as a semiautonomous locus of meaning and expression, with its own formal demands and the power to eclipse narrative logic. Dozens of musical numbers are analyzed, drawn from more than eighty films, exploring glamour from the perspectives of arranging and orchestrational technique, the fantasies awoken in the spectator, and the invocation of magical belief. Anticonsumerist critiques of glamour are evaluated alongside counterarguments upholding glamour’s transformative and sustaining potential. Concluding discussion shows how the musical genre has affinities with the hybrid aesthetic of “magical realism.”

Abstract:
Chapter 8 outlines the potential merits and challenges of prosecuting individuals suspected of being involved in state organized crime before international criminal courts and tribunals. It identifies potential advantages common to international criminal courts and tribunals, namely the unavailability of jurisdictional immunities as a procedural bar, the greater likelihood of a genuine investigation, the existence of formal rules to deal with concurrent claims of jurisdiction, the capacity to address complex cases of system criminality, and the expressive potential of international criminal courts and tribunals. It then considers the respective advantages and disadvantages of different institutional mechanisms that could be used or adapted for the prosecution of state organized crime, examining in turn the International Criminal Court, ad hoc tribunals, and the future criminal chamber of the African Court of Justice and Human Rights.

Abstract:
The chapter clarifies Husserl’s phenomenological approach to embodiment by explicating his analytical concepts and his transcendental arguments concerning the constitution of living bodiliness (Leiblichkeit). The chapter argues that Husserlian phenomenology does not establish any simple opposition between naturalistic and phenomenological inquiries but instead offers a comprehensive account of the many senses of the body operative in human practices, including the practices of the sciences. The human body is given, not just as a material thing, but also as an instrument, as an agent, and an expressive stylistic whole. The second part of the chapter discusses recent applications of Husserlian philosophy of embodiment in the investigation of human plurality. By analyzing the exemplary phenomena of sexuality and sexual difference, the chapter demonstrates that the phenomenological concepts of style and stylistic unity can serve investigations into the diversity of human embodiment in its many forms.

The remainder of the chapter examines pastoralism in terms of its style, providing an overview of both the musical traits associated with it and the major critical and interpretive issues they raise—most notably, concerns with pastoralism’s perceived engagement with the feminine.

Full text
Abstract:
In Chopin's set of 24 interconnectedPreludes (Op. 28), we are presented with 24 distinct compositional surfaces, aiming at as many distinguishable emotional expressions. As such, the Preludes stand as a virtual survey of the developing musical manners of the 19th century--which was, after all, the stylistic period in which mood was promoted most energetically and frankly. Under analytic investigation, the technical means to these varied expressive ends can be discovered and assessed. 24 separate explorations reveal themselves to the inquiring musician, who can investigate any or as many of the pieces as is wished or needed. At the same time, the Preludes form a fairly compelling total entity, related by precise balances of mood and key, as well as certain subtler interconnecting details. The individual analyses aim at conjoined descriptive statements that take into account the various separable, but ultimately fused, musical elements: line and harmony in the pitch domain; rhythm in terms of local detail, but also at the levels of meter, phrase, and form; and the various expressive modifications of dynamics and articulation. Form is seen to grow out of the harnessed progress of these elements, which together determine expressive content. The Chopin Preludes, a centerpiece of 19th-century Romanticism, are unique: two dozen distinct moods that seem to summarize the musical manners of the time, they also function as an organic whole. This book is a detailed guide through thePreludes, both individually and as a group. The analyses assess technical and expressive means and ends.

Thomas Carlyle claimed that his history of the French Revolution was ‘a wild savage book, itself a kind of French Revolution …’. This chapter considers his stylistic approaches to creating the illusion of immediacy: his presentation of seemingly unmediated fact through the transformation of memoir and other kinds of historical record into a compelling dramatic narrative. Closely examining the ways in which he worked biographical anecdote into the fabric of his text raises questions about Carlyle’s wider historical purposes. Pressing the question of what it means to think through style, or to distinguish expressive emotive writing from abstract understanding, is an opportunity to reconsider Carlyle’s relation to his predecessors and contemporaries writing on the Revolution in English.

Full text
Abstract:
A theory of the structure of rock music is presented, addressing aspects such as tonality/key, harmony, rhythm/meter, melody, phrase structure, timbre/instrumentation, form, and emotional expression. The book brings together ideas from the author’s previous articles but also contains substantial new material. Rock is defined broadly (as it often is) to include a wide range of late twentieth-century Anglo-American popular styles, including 1950s rock &amp; roll, Motown, soul, “British invasion” rock, soft rock, heavy metal, disco, new wave, and alternative rock. The study largely employs the informal, intuitive methods of conventional music theory and analysis, but it is also informed by corpus data. An important component of the theory is a representation of pitches—the “line of fifths”—that sheds light on issues such as stylistic distinctions within rock, effects of surprise, and emotion. The theory also entails a model of expression with three dimensions, representing valence, energy, and tension; this proves to be a powerful tool for tracing shifts in expressive effect within songs. The theory features novel approaches to issues such as cadences, melodic-harmonic coordination, the handling of sectional boundaries, and the classification of formal types. The final two chapters present analyses of six songs and a broader consideration of rock in its historical and stylistic context.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the issue of the impact of the Fascist regime’s own language on the activity of the administrative judge. After recalling the problem of the context in which the language of the administrative judge is framed, the investigation highlights some possible “symptoms” of a “sensibility” to be assessed on the level of stylistic and expressive formulas. If, in some cases, this language has been the subject of a particular criticism and attack, in others cases it is possible to highlight how a certain assonance emerges indirectly with the typical speech of the regime. In this perspective, it can be recognized that the linguistic “charm” of the regime, while not affecting the independence of judgment of the administrative judge, had a certain impact on the style of some decisions of the Italian Council of State. An analysis conducted on some paradigmatic cases is able to identify, with regard to a part of the jurisprudence developed after the Thirties, a real “climax” on the linguistic and expressive level.

Abstract:
Strengthening the potential of international integration of graduates of Ukrainian technical universities and their effective adaptation to the socio-cultural environment of industrialised countries requires the development, validation and implementation of educational technologies for training future specialists in such important for the national economy specialities as mechanical engineering, energy, chemical engineering, civil engineering, economics, ecology, transport, IT technologies. Intercultural communicative competence is formed in the process of studying a foreign languages and multicultural education. It is necessary to modernise the existing curricula for the study of foreign languages and cultures by introducing innovative elements that increase the level of preparedness of future professionals for international economic and technological interaction. A developed communicative culture presupposes a qualitative knowledge of languages, the achievement of which is to some extent hindered by students' poor understanding of stylistic norms of language, which are not taught in non-philological universities, and which is a frequent cause of errors in oral and written communication by future graduates. The study attempts to form stylistic skills of students of a technical university, the presence of which means the ability to clearly and distinctly express their thoughts, adhering to stylistic norms, to select and adequately use various stylistic means of the language in accordance with the communication situation. The development of stylistic skills was carried out on the material of English-language fiction, which is considered a rich resource for carrying out stylistic analysis of texts, developing students' communicative competence, and increasing their general cultural level.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractExperimental psychological research on the expressive aspects of children’s drawings has grown considerably in the last 40 years. It has reported consistently that children use the same expressive techniques as artists, despite varying opinions on how expressive drawing develops in childhood (e.g., U-shaped curve or age incremental patterns). The developmental findings have largely derived from drawing tasks that explicitly ask children to draw an emotion or mood (e.g. happy, sad, angry). Nevertheless, the pervasiveness of expression in children’s drawings is such that we might expect children to spontaneously communicate expressively in drawing tasks that do not specifically request mood. “Drawing God” is such an example due to the potential emotive aspects of the subject, both in terms of the “God Figure” and the potential representation of other subject matter in the drawing. With this in mind, this chapter sets forth two sets of analyses of over 500 children’s drawings from Switzerland, obtained from a sample of 6- to 16-year-olds. First, we report findings from a quantitative study based on artist ratings that the intensity (strength) and valence (negative to positive) of the emotional expression in the drawings varies according to gender and religiosity. Age was not a significant predictor of intensity and only weakly predicted valence. Second, we describe narrative themes derived from our own observations of the dataset, in which all themes consistently indicated the same expressive techniques reported in the psychological experimental literature. Furthermore, despite being asked only to “draw God”, the drawings displayed a wide variety of themes which can be presented as a narrative story of the Christian Gospel.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This paper discusses the semantic change of well as a discourse marker from the perspective of politeness with synchronic conversational data. Previous research proposed two pathways of development of this marker: from textual to expressive and from expressive to textual. Based on the latter hypothesis, this paper claims that textual function can be considered a byproduct of a speaker’s intersubjective stance. The propositional meaning of well ‘in a good manner’ first invokes a subjective use (e.g., agreement), then an intersubjective use (e.g., dispreferred response). Furthermore, paying attention to the hearer’s face contributes to a textual use (e.g., repair) since topic/discourse management involves potential face-threat. That is, each component is overlapped between them in the order of subjective &gt; intersubjective &gt; textual.

Abstract:
This chapter, set within the framework of constrained communication, investigates the linguistic effects, in terms of lexical use, of a number of shared and distinct communicative constraints that are thought to play a role in New Englishes and Learner Englishes. Relying on corpora of spoken Hong Kong English (HKE) and Mainland Chinese English (MCE), as well as native British English as a reference, it adopts a twofold methodology combining automatic measures of lexical complexity and a manual examination of lexical choices in a picture description task. The vocabulary used by HKE speakers appears to be more varied and sophisticated than that of MCE speakers, but otherwise the two groups display similar traces of potential L1 influence and employ the same strategies to compensate for limitations on proficiency. Native speakers’ vocabulary tends to be less complex and less formal, which is explained by their better stylistic awareness and possibly their lower task expertise.

Abstract:
AbstractCityEngine is a rule-based urban modeling software package. It offers a flexible pipeline to transform 2D data into 3D urban models. Typical applications include processing 2D urban cartographic geographic information system (GIS) data to create a detailed 3D city model, creating a detailed visualization of a proposed development, or exploring the design space of a potential project. The rule-based core of Esri’s CityEngine has some unique advantages: Huge cities can be created as easily as small ones, while the quality of the models is consistent throughout. Additionally, this rule-based approach means that large design spaces can be explored quickly, interactively, and analytically compared. Such advantages must be carefully balanced against the increased time to create and parameterize the rules and the sometimes stylistic or approximate models created; coming from more traditional workflows, CityEngine’s pipeline can be initially overwhelming. We introduce the principal workflows and the flexibility they afford, sketch the procedural programming language used, and discuss the export pathways available.

Abstract:
The unceasing interest in the study of various stylistic phenomena is due to the constant discovery of new aspects in various linguistic facts, and at the present stage of linguistic research more and more attention is paid to the interaction of expressive means of language at various levels, which increases the pragmatic effect of the utterance, and its most significant elements are brought to the fore. The pronoun can be considered one of the most ambiguous lexical and grammatical categories. Unlike nouns, the class of pronouns is closed due to the fact that it comprises a limited number of units, but the constant transition of one personal pronoun into the scope of another can affect its stylistic functions and serve as an additional means of implementing the pragmatic attitude of the utterance. This paper attempts not only to systematise the scattered information on the stylistic potential of certain pronouns and to observe the cases of stylistic convergence involving personal pronouns, but also to apply it to concrete empirical material, since personal pronouns are organically linked to artistic thinking and linguistic means acquire a stylistic function in combination with each other within a specific functional manifestation. The research was carried out on the material of two novels by contemporary English writers, Stephen Fry and Mark Haddon, who are highly recognised masters of the written word and who depict a wide range of socially significant phenomena and events in their works, using personal pronouns in all their grammatical and pragmatic diversity.

Abstract That Poetry is a marked instance of language and that poems make expressive use of marked stylistic devices in both vocabulary and syntax are known facts about poetry for decades (Jakobson 1960, 1968, 1973; Mukafovsky [1948]1989). Somewhat accordingly, many scholars bring concepts from linguistics to bear upon literary texts, specifically by analyzing the stylistic devices that seem to make the literary text effective (Austin 1981; Epstein 1981; Fairley 1981; Freeman 19816; Keyser 1981; Kiparsky 1981; Tarlinskaya 1987).

Abstract:
The presentation aims to focus from an ecdotic perspective, and from unexplored hermeneutic angles, on potentially prominent features of the annotated editions in which are brought together those genologically varied literary-type writings that are correlated with the analogous artistic fields, such as the visual arts, architecture or music, starting from relevant concrete examples in the Italian cultural landscape. Furthermore, attention will be drawn to how to make an edition of a philological character, scientifically grounded, in which a literary transposition of the philosophical content takes place, invested in it as well in an interdisciplinary sense. In addition to texts outlining art and philosophy, the current paper explores those belonging to the sphere of the sciences, if they possess similar literary attributes because they present certain thematic connections or consistent stylistic constants. Simultaneously, the intent is to analyze the ways in which a component of literariness is infused into these texts, which is observed both in terms of content and form, that is, emerging from the predilected theme, or from their internal characteristics. Thus in the paper are approached utterly important theoretical and literary-critical questions from an interdisciplinary perspective, making it possible to arrive at innovative knowledge from the unfolding potential, developing such texts.

Abstract:
The means of enriching the French vocabulary and creating new connotations are not so numerous: affixation in all its grandeur and complexity, composition and telescopy (telescoping), the rare contamination of two or three words, the passage of a word from one part of speech into another, the deliberate and comical change of spelling. But there is also in French the phenomenon of the truncation of a simple word (or a compound - very rarely) by the deletion of a phoneme or several phonemes in the initial position (apheresis) or in the final position (apocope). Working on the stylistic metalanguage (Dictionary of stylistic and poetic terms), we have written more detailed lexicographic articles on these two terms, justifying their presence not only in colloquial, popular and slang French, but also in literary and poetic language. This article is dedicated to the phenomenon of truncation that is done for stylistic purposes as a result of which we obtain new expressive, emotional and even affective connotations in the text (speech).

At the lexical level, the most frequent types of borrowings, colloquial, and slang expressions have been identified. At the grammatical level– there are special excretory constructions characteristic of the modern spoken language, rows of homogeneous terms, incomplete sentences, diminutive suffixes. At the stylistic level, these are the most common visual and expressive means. Culturological features are also analyzed, such as, for example, the use of “talking” names. Thus, the interview genre illustrates the vector of development that the Italian language is currently taking

Abstract:
Stylistics can be considered as a field of study that crosses text theory, linguistics, and journalism. Although different schools create different approaches to stylistics, each stylistic approach will include in its paradigm some basic factors, such as the reader and the author. This article shows how these factors interact with each other and, ultimately, create the basis for the emergence of a new field in Ukrainian journalism – interactive stylistics. The study is devoted to interactive stylistics, which is considering as a field based on the text’s own pragmatic potential in the context of modern humanities methodology. This discipline acquires a new function: to observe and interpretively explain, firstly, the meaning of interactions between agents (author and recipient) in communication, mediated by the media text, and, secondly, the effect that this interaction brings. At the center of interactive stylistics is the author (journalist), who through the text discusses the content of interactions in relation to his own interests, as well as cultural, social and historical contracts with the reader. The meaning of the expressions used and the general meaning of such interactions arises in the context of communication events, based on the perception of the subjects of communication with the surrounding reality through the assimilation and adequate interpretation of new information. In modern Ukrainian science of communication, the study of interactive stylistics acquires significant potential. It profiles itself in the context of interdisciplinarity and aims to explore interactivity, interpretability, as well as intertextuality (in specific media texts or interdiscourse dialogue). Interactive stylistics is able to meet the needs of communicators as a useful source of instructions on how communication subjects interact and has a chance to achieve success both at the domestic and international scientific level. Due to its scientific perspective of applying the above-mentioned methodology, it is harmoniously integrated among the tendentious linguistic and broader social science and humanitarian disciplines in Ukrainian scientific research or in the wider international context. Keywords: interactive stylistics; stylistics; reverse communication; style; interactivity; media text.

Abstract:
The article investigates functional techniques of extralinguistic expression in multimedia texts; the effectiveness of figurative expressions as a reaction to modern events in Ukraine and their influence on the formation of public opinion is shown. Publications of journalists, broadcasts of media resonators, experts, public figures, politicians, readers are analyzed. The language of the media plays a key role in shaping the worldview of the young political elite in the first place. The essence of each statement is a focused thought that reacts to events in the world or in one’s own country. The most popular platform for mass information and social interaction is, first of all, network journalism, which is characterized by mobility and unlimited time and space. Authors have complete freedom to express their views in direct language, including their own word formation. Phonetic, lexical, phraseological and stylistic means of speech create expression of the text. A figurative word, a good aphorism or proverb, a paraphrased expression, etc. enhance the effectiveness of a multimedia text. This is especially important for headlines that simultaneously inform and influence the views of millions of readers. Given the wide range of issues raised by the Internet as a medium, research in this area is interdisciplinary. The science of information, combining language and social communication, is at the forefront of global interactions. The Internet is an effective source of knowledge and a forum for free thought. Nonlinear texts (hypertexts) – «branching texts or texts that perform actions on request», multimedia texts change the principles of information collection, storage and dissemination, involving billions of readers in the discussion of global issues. Mastering the word is not an easy task if the author of the publication is not well-read, is not deep in the topic, does not know the psychology of the audience for which he writes. Therefore, the study of media broadcasting is an important component of the professional training of future journalists. The functions of the language of the media require the authors to make the right statements and convincing arguments in the text. Journalism education is not only knowledge of imperative and dispositive norms, but also apodictic ones. In practice, this means that there are rules in media creativity that are based on logical necessity. Apodicticity is the first sign of impressive language on the platform of print or electronic media. Social expression is a combination of creative abilities and linguistic competencies that a journalist realizes in his activity. Creative self-expression is realized in a set of many important factors in the media: the choice of topic, convincing arguments, logical presentation of ideas and deep philological education. Linguistic art, in contrast to painting, music, sculpture, accumulates all visual, auditory, tactile and empathic sensations in a universal sign – the word. The choice of the word for the reproduction of sensory and semantic meanings, its competent use in the appropriate context distinguishes the journalist-intellectual from other participants in forums, round tables, analytical or entertainment programs. Expressive speech in the media is a product of the intellect (ability to think) of all those who write on socio-political or economic topics. In the same plane with him – intelligence (awareness, prudence), the first sign of which (according to Ivan Ogienko) is a good knowledge of the language. Intellectual language is an important means of organizing a journalistic text. It, on the one hand, logically conveys the author’s thoughts, and on the other – encourages the reader to reflect and comprehend what is read. The richness of language is accumulated through continuous self-education and interesting communication. Studies of social expression as an important factor influencing the formation of public consciousness should open up new facets of rational and emotional media broadcasting; to trace physical and psychological reactions to communicative mimicry in the media. Speech mimicry as one of the methods of disguise is increasingly becoming a dangerous factor in manipulating the media. Mimicry is an unprincipled adaptation to the surrounding social conditions; one of the most famous examples of an animal characterized by mimicry (change of protective color and shape) is a chameleon. In a figurative sense, chameleons are called adaptive journalists. Observations show that mimicry in politics is to some extent a kind of game that, like every game, is always conditional and artificial.
