Abstract:
Human wastewater (sewage) has been entering the sea for as long as there has been a coastal population and ice cores now show significant long-range movement of metal wastes dating from at least the Roman times. The human health impacts of metal poisoning were known to the Romans and the need for clean water has also been long recognised. This chapter focuses on pollutants, such as sewage, metals, pesticides, for which the impacts have long been known and for which regulations/legislative control measures are in place. As such, these types of pollution should be a thing of the past: the problem should be solved. Against this perspective, the extent to which the marine environment continues to be impacted by them and the reasons for these ongoing concerns are considered.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 discusses the use of epidemiology to identify the source of public health problems and inform policymaking. It uses a case study to illustrate how researchers, policymakers, and practitioners detect diseases, identify their sources, determine the extent of an outbreak, and prevent new infections. The chapter also defines key measures in epidemiology that can indicate public health priorities, including morbidity and mortality, years of potential life lost, and measures of lifetime impacts, including disability-adjusted life years and quality-adjusted life years. Finally, the chapter reviews epidemiological study designs, differentiating between experimental and observational studies, to show how to interpret data and identify limitations.

Abstract:
For a variety of reasons, assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) have posed significant challenges to regulators seeking normative legitimacy. While some of those challenges relate to the sort of value pluralism common to many areas of life, it has been suggested that the challenge is made significantly harder by the presence of genuinely intractable normative problems. This chapter examines one of the most significant of these problems in relation to reproductive choices, the infamous Non Identity Problem. I examine a number of proposed solutions and regulatory strategies that have been examined to circumvent or resolve such problems, and conclude by suggesting that the extent of the challenge posed by non-identity is just beginning to become apparent.

Abstract:
The use of illicit psychoactive substances is commonplace in many parts of the world, with significant variations in the extent of drug use and problem use. This reflects differences in drug markets, drug availability, and legislation, as well as political, economic, and social conditions. Cultural and historical conditions can also play an important role. Overwhelming evidence from epidemiological research conducted over the past 50 years shows that adolescence is the period of greatest risk for the initiation of drug use. Most of those who have tried illicit drugs do not go on to develop drug dependence or drug-related problems. Problem drug users are more often males and are likely to have a family history of substance dependence, delinquent behaviour, and mental health problems. Strategies to prevent drug use or drug related harms need to address the complexity of drug-related problems.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This book examines the transfer pricing rules, including the arm's length principle (ALP), in the context of the G20 / OECD Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) project. It considers the nature and scope of the transfer pricing rule starting with an explanation of how and on what basis the rules were created. It provides clear analysis of the rules as they are applied currently, and tackles problems with the model. The issues highlighted include problems relating to the complexity of the rules the use of comparables and, in particular, the problem of ‘excessive capital’. Having established the rules and inherent problems, the book goes on to examine the extent to which the work undertaken by the BEPs project will provide a solid foundation for future transfer pricing determinations.

Abstract:
Research over the last decade has identified Internet addiction as a new and often unrecognized clinical disorder that impacts a user’s ability to control online use to the extent that it can cause relational, occupational, and social problems. Symptoms of problem Internet use are compared to the criteria used to diagnose other addictions. In particular, pathological gambling is compared to problematic Internet use because of overlapping criteria. As new cases of problem Internet use are being documented, this chapter describes the diagnostic and treatment implications of the disorder. As computers are used with great frequency, detection and diagnosis of Internet addiction are often difficult. Symptoms of a possible problem may be masked by legitimate use of the Internet, and clinicians may not ask questions about computer use because problem Internet use is still a new and often unrecognized condition. This chapter outlines diagnostic conceptualizations of problem Internet use including the DSM-V proposed criteria for Pathological Computer Use, assessment techniques, and treatment considerations.

Full text
Abstract:
For a given division of labor, (potential) breakdowns of integration can be traced to either motivational or knowledge-related sources (or both). Integration failures arising from coordination problems require managing the need for and/or the extent of predictive knowledge; those arising from cooperation problems require managing the valence of interdependence. A fruitful area for further enquiry awaits the student of organization design at the intersection of these sources of integration failure. I outlined two possible approaches: a closer look at the interactions between knowledge and motivation-related issues, or a coarser bundling of both into the construct of integration. In particular, given the behavioral assumptions of adaptive rationality, thinking of integration of effort as a search problem may be an area of high research potential. It can help understand organizations as “marvels but not miracles”—how boundedly rational designers can nevertheless organize boundedly rational agents towards accomplishing goals.

Marceddu, Maria Laura. EU Values in Investment Law And Policy. Oxford University PressOxford, 2025. https://doi.org/10.1093/9780191986208.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Inspired by the EU’s foundational promises of democracy and the rule of law, the book delves into how and to what extent these values have expanded into international investment law and policy. While the book is not an ode to the EU, it acknowledges the potential for the EU to leave an imprint on international investment dynamics. It is this potential that the book unravels, explaining how the problems within the international investment regime are turned into an opportunity for the EU to extend its normative values into a new field. Through a solid analytical foundation, the manuscript critically examines where the EU has been particularly innovative—or notably dogmatic—in (re)shaping the traditional rules of the international investment system. It also acknowledges the limits of the bold rhetoric that often surrounds the EU’s external actions, providing a nuanced view of its impact on global investment law.

Full text
Abstract:
Criminal Justice is popularly conceptualised as a pursuit of the truth. This book considers the extent to which this view reflects reality by exploring a number of key themes. The ‘pursuit of truth’ suggests an obtainable, single truth and the book considers the extent to which truth is a far more complex, nuanced phenomenon. Often the criminal process appears to be more about constructing a narrative and telling a convincing story. The book explores the extent to which a pursuit of truth can conflict with other values such as justice and the protection of human rights, with particular focus on illegally obtained evidence and confessions. The concluding chapters discuss the extent to which the pursuit of truth has shaped the modern trial process and assesses alternative approaches to criminal justice including restorative justice and truth commissions. The conclusion highlights some fundamental themes in the book and points to the limitations of the current criminal justice system not only in terms of establishing truth but in terms of realising significant social benefit. Three areas of focus are taken to assess the current system’s ability to find the truth: blame, juvenile justice, and the pursuit of justice. The book argues that the current criminal process adopts a person, rather than a system, approach to bad events with a focus on identifying individuals to blame rather than addressing the wider problems resulting from crime.
