In this thesis we present a system to extract the eye motion from a video stream containing a human face and applying this eye motion into a virtual character. By the notation eye motion estimation, we mean the information which describes the location of the eyes in each frame of the video stream. Applying this eye motion estimation into a virtual character, we achieve that the virtual face moves the eyes in the same way than the human face, synthesizing eye motion into a virtual character. Abstract:
This Ph.D thesis work is dedicated to automatic facial analysis in 3D, including facial landmarking and facial expression recognition. Indeed, facial expression plays an important role both in verbal and non verbal communication, and in expressing emotions. Thus, automatic facial expression recognition has various purposes and applications and particularly is at the heart of "intelligent" human-centered human/computer(robot) interfaces. Meanwhile, automatic landmarking provides aprior knowledge on location of face landmarks, which is required by many face analysis methods such as face segmenta

Morph targets are one of the most popular methods to animate the face. Up until now 3D artists had to design each morph target defined by the MPEG-4 standard by hand. This is a very monotonous and tedious task. With the newly developed method of Facial Motion Cloning [11]the heavy work is relieved from the artists. From an already animated face model the morph targets can now be copied onto a new static face model.

For th

Facial expression is one of the effective channels to convey emotions and feelings. Many shape-based, appearance-based or hybrid methods for automatic facial expression recognition have been proposed. However, it is still a challenging task to identify emotions from facial images with scaling differences, pose variations, and occlusions. In addition, it is also difficult to identify significant discriminating facial features that could represent the characteristic of each expression because of the subtlety and variability of facial expressions. In order to deal with the above challenges, this

Abstract:
Facial feature point detection is a key issue in facial image processing. One main challenge of facial feature point detection is the variation of facial structures due to expressions. This thesis aims to explore more accurate and robust facial feature point detection algorithms, which can facilitate the research on facial image processing, in particular the facial expression analysis. This thesis introduces a facial feature point detection system, where the Multilinear Principal Component Analysis is applied to extract the highly descriptive features of facial feature points.
