Abstract:
Psychological First Aid (PFA) consists of a systematic set of helping actions aimed at reducing initial post-trauma distress and supporting short- and long-term adaptive functioning. Designed as an initial component of a comprehensive disaster/trauma response, PFA is constructed around eight core actions: contact and engagement, safety and comfort, stabilization, information gathering, practical assistance, connection with social supports, information on coping support, and linkage with collaborative services. PFA for children and adolescents focuses on these same core actions, with modifications to make them developmentally appropriate. Formal evaluation of the effectiveness of PFA is needed and it is hoped that development of a PFA Field Operations Guide will facilitate such evaluation.

Abstract:
Emergencies and disasters are common and occur on a daily basis. Although most survivors will not experience any long-term negative mental health effects, some will. First responders tend to have first contact with the survivors and, therefore, are in a position to provide needed mental health assistance to survivors. Psychological first aid (PFA) is an evidence-informed approach to providing support to survivors following a serious crisis event, and it aims to reduce the initial distress of the traumatic event and to promote adaptive functioning and coping. PFA has gained a great deal of attention lately, likely due to the fact that it is easy to provide. This article discusses the potential negative effects of emergencies and disasters on mental health, provides a description of PFA and discusses its application, and provides an overview of the research base of PFA and a discussion on the need for future research.

Abstract:
Background This study develops an ontology of Psychological First Aid (PFA) by extracting relevant knowledge from a review of PFA literature. Materials and methods This study was conducted using the PFA ontology development 101 method. This review processes previously-developed PFA studies by consulting Google Scholar, CINHL, PUBMED, and MEDLINE. Protege 5.0 program was used to integrate with ontology development. The developed PFA ontology consisted of eight super classes: Action agenda, Assessment, Concrete method, Disaster type, Disaster disposition, Purpose, Qualification and Skill, Reaction. In total, 166 terms were collected. Results The eight super classes were divided into 72 classes and 64 subclasses. The composition yielded in a total of 166 axioms (85 logical axioms; 81 declaration axioms). Conclusions This study provides basic data to guide development and composition of PFA arbitration programs.

Abstract:
The concept of «psychological first aid» is revealed. First psychological aid is defined as «a set of general human support measures and practical psychological assistance to people who have been exposed to significant stressors». An important characteristic of psychological first aid is its simplicity. It is emphasized that psychological first aid includes both psychological and social support. Vulnerable groups that need special help in crisis conditions are listed, including children and adolescents. The main principles of providing psychological first aid are considered. Stress factors are described, factors from which people suffer in an extreme situation. Among the disorders of mental processes and signs of providing first psychological aid, the following are highlighted: disorders of cognitive function; disturbance of emotional response; disorganization; loss of ability to control one's behavior; violation of adaptation to the surrounding world; demoralization. Ethical rules for providing psychological first aid, as well as prohibitions in providing it, are considered. The tasks of psychological first aid are determined: to create a sense of security, connection with other people, peace and hope; promote access to social, physical and emotional support; to strengthen faith in the possibility of helping oneself and others. Elements of psychological first aid are listed, as well as four operational principles: prepare, observe, listen and connect. Psychological first aid covers humane, supportive measures to respond to the suffering of a person who may need support. The main features of a specialist, which should be present when communicating with persons who have experienced a stressful situation, are indicated. These are politeness, benevolence, tact, modesty, accuracy and obligation. The peculiarities of psychological communication in the provision of psychological first aid to children and adolescents are indicated. Risks for children and adolescents during the crisis are considered. The algorithm for providing psychological first aid to children and adolescents is described. The need to take care of the mental health of specialists who provide psychological first aid to children and adolescents is emphasized. Key words: psychological first aid, crisis situation, stress, stressful situation, children, teenagers.

Abstract:
The turbulent shocks of recent decades—man-made and natural disasters, political instability, pandemics, and military conflicts—highlight the need for psychosocial support for victims. To plan and train those who can provide it, a number of guidelines have been developed at the global and national levels, within international medical organizations that can minimize the impact of the crisis and start the recovery process. The article presents the definition of the concept of Psychological First Aid (PFA), describes the key aspects, structure, time limits, and principles of activity; a description of three leading models of first psychological assistance in the context of international medical organizations: the World Health Organization (WHO), Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF), and the Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health Preparedness, USA. The RAPID model of first aid and key competencies for psychosocial workers involved in helping victims are described. The principles and techniques of PFA meet four basic standards: they are based on the results of research of risks and resilience after injury; they are practical and suitable for use in the “field”; they meet the age characteristics of development; they take into account cultural differences. The chronogram of mental reactions to a stressful event and the provision of PFA to victims within international medical organizations is divided into four phases which should be taken into account in the organization of psychosocial support. The RAPID model is based on five aspects designed to alleviate acute stress: Rapport and Reflective listening; Assessment of needs; Prioritization; Intervention; Disposition. If control over bodily reactions, emotions, and thoughts in the victims are restored, the narrative of the event is completed and accompanied by appropriate reactions, emotions are accepted, self-esteem and self-confidence are restored, and a sense of the future appears, we can say that the person has successfully adapted to the traumatic event and is ready to move on.

Abstract:
Psychological first aid (PFA) may be considered a form of acute psychological crisis intervention designed to foster human resilience. PFA has been universally endorsed as an important addition to the corpus of mental health-related support services in the wake of disasters. As support grows for its utilization beyond disasters alone, consideration should be given to the application of PFA to high-risk occupational setting. While PFA has begun to be used in the emergency services, it would also seem to be well suited for fostering resilience in healthcare settings where burnout and vicarious traumatization may approach the prevalence of silent epidemics. This paper describes PFA and argues for its utilization as a non-stigmatizing approach to foster the resilience of healthcare professionals and in doing so avoiding the “second victim” phenomenon.

Abstract:
In academe, Psychological First Aid contributes substantially to assist those with emotional distress. Its goal is to be supportive of stress-related reactions, so the researchers were prompted to assess the psychological first aid of BatState-U Lemery student organizations. To achieve the purpose, profile variables were identified in terms of age, sex, department, and college as well as the activities facilitated by student organizations that foster psychological first aid core values. Moreover, the effectiveness of the psychological first aid activities of the students’ organization was also assessed in terms of contact and engagement, safety and comfort, stabilization, information gathering, current needs and concerns, practical assistance, connection with social support, information in coping and linkage with collaborative service. The significant difference in the respondent’s assessment of the affected variables when grouped according to their profile was also determined. Specifically, this study utilized descriptive method research which was participated by 291 students of the said campus. The study utilized the sampling method of research and used a survey questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument through Google Forms. Data collected were tabulated, analyzed, and interpreted using statistical treatment such as weighted mean and independent t-test. Findings revealed that the majority of the respondents belonged to the age bracket of 20-22, female, and from the College of Accountancy and Business Economics. The webinar was the activity of BatStateU Lemery student organizations that mostly fostered Psychological First Aid Core Values to the students while culminating activity was least fostered. All Psychological First Aid Core values were effectively used and fostered by the student organizations of BatStateU Lemery. Consequently, there was no significant relationship between the profile of respondents in terms of age, sex, and college department in the psychological first aid core values. Thus, a strategy plan for Student Organizations and Activities (SOA) was recommended to strengthen and foster Psychological First Aid to the students.

Crises such as the global pandemic of COVID-19 (coronavirus) elicit a range of responses from individuals and societies adversely affecting physical and emotional well-being. This article provides an overview of factors elicited in response to COVID-19 and their impact on immunity, physical health, mental health and well-being. Certain groups, such as individuals with mental illness, are especially vulnerable, so it is important to maximise the supports available to this population and their families during the pandemic. More broadly, the World Health Organization recommends ‘Psychological First Aid’ as a useful technique that can help many people in a time of crisis.

PFA is the first line of psychological support that can be given to people who are experiencing a crisis, including victims of bullying. It is hoped that this knowledge related to PFA can be a solution in helping to overcome the problem of bullying in adolescents. Methods – Researchers employed the literature review method in this study, collecting different literature from 2011 to 2021 that explores bullying, psychological first aid, and psychological first aid for adolescent victims of bullying. Results – Trauma from bullying has been reported to be associated with chronic and severe psychiatric pathology, including mood and anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), alcohol and drug abuse, and personality disorders. In addition, the most feared consequence to bullying is its significant association with suicidal tendencies. Discuss – The PFA training or orientation takes place throughout between a half or a full day course, and explains the basic concepts and principles of PFA, such as how to approach situations safely, how to support very distressed people, and how not to cause further harm. PFA training uses participatory learning methods such as role playing Conclusion – Psychological first aid is one of the protections that can be provided with the aim of helping the victim to recover after the bullying incident. PFA can be carried out by non-mental health professionals, parents, and school personnel, especially teachers and/or school nurses, therefore, they are expected to take part in PFA training. Keywords: psychological first aid, bullying, adolescence.

Abstract:
Abstract Disasters such as earthquakes are events that cause both material damage and psychiatric disorders. Many psychological problems occur in individuals after earthquakes. Nurses can determine the physical and psychological effects of disasters on the individual, family and society and protect the physical and emotional safety of individuals at all stages of the disaster. Nurses help people to use problem-solving skills, rational coping behaviors and discover their strengths in difficult situations such as earthquakes with their healthy communication knowledge and skills. Psychiatric first aid practice is important in terms of enabling individuals to express their feelings and thoughts in the face of a disaster situation and supporting their ability to restructure their lives and their sense of self-confidence. It is important that psychological first aid studies must be known by nurses because it accelerates the healing process of the individual. References 11. Yang, Y.-N., Xiao, L. Abstract:
Disasters, whether natural or human-made, can have profound and lasting impacts on individuals’ mental health and well-being. In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the importance of addressing psychological impact of disasters and incorporating psychological first aid (PFA) in disaster preparedness policies and plans. This research paper explores the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating PFA into community disaster preparedness plans. Drawing on a review of existing literature, this paper examines the theoretical underpinnings of PFA, its core principles and components, and its effectiveness in promoting psychological resilience and recovery following disasters. Additionally, this paper explores the practical considerations and logistical challenges involved in implementing PFA within the context of community disaster preparedness, including issues related to training, resource allocation, coordination with existing emergency response systems, and cultural sensitivity. Through a comprehensive analysis of the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating PFA into community disaster preparedness plans, this paper aims to inform policymakers, emergency responders, and mental health professionals about the importance of prioritizing psychological support in disaster preparedness efforts and offers recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of PFA initiatives at the community level.

Abstract:
The term psychological first aid is used inhomogeneously in the professional literature of various disciplines, which means that the term is either synonymized or confused with other terms related to the provision of psychosocial assistance to those affected in the context of a crisis. However, they have different meanings and are applied in different contexts, which can represent a certain terminological and semantic chaos in the professional community. Aims: To present the results of the conceptual analysis of the term psychological first aid, its defining attributes and an overview of synonymous terms used in the Czech and foreign literature. Methods: The method of Walker and Avant was used to process the conceptual analysis. It is a frequently used method of conceptual analysis, especially in nursing and psychological research. However, the Walker and Avant method, due to its linearity and clear structure, is also recommended for use in research in other fields of study and science. The analysis is a critical assessment of relevant sources published between 2000 and 2020. The criteria for inclusion of relevant available sources in the analysis included the availability of full text and relevance to the topic addressed, year of publication, source language (English, Czech). By preparing a conceptual analysis, 89 Czech and 717 foreign sources (publications, articles, final theses) concerning possible concepts and definitions of psychological first aid were found. These were further sorted according to the set criteria and analyzed using the individual steps of the selected method of conceptual analysis. Results: The performed analysis confirmed the assumption of inconsistent use of the term PFA in the context of the crisis. In the surveyed studies, PFA is most often confused or synonymized with the terms psychological first aid (psychologická první pomoc), mental health first aid (psychická první pomoc), psychiatric first aid (psychiatrická první pomoc), psychosocial first aid (psychosociální první pomoc), psychosocial support (psychosociální podpora), psychosocial intervention (psychosociální pomoc), crisis intervention (krizová intervence, krizová pomoc), psychological debriefing and others. According to the results of the analysis, the defining attributes of PFA may include assistance, type of event / situation, assisting person, affected person, time of PFA provision, objective / purpose of PFA provision. Conclusion: It has been found that the definition of psychological first aid is described in many available sources and modified to many cultures and languages. There is a clear inconsistency in the definition of the selected concept in the retrieved sources. Psychological first aid is an immediate short term one-off assistance to assist the affected individual in dealing with emergencies, while related concepts such as crisis intervention, crisis assistance and others mean more options for support and management of psychosocial assistance to those affected in crisis. Determining the defining attributes of psychological first aid enables the creation of a clearer and more specific definition.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The psychological effects of mass quarantine following the COVID-19 lockdown are likely to be significant. Emotional and behavioural responses to quarantine are related to a psychological state of anxiety. These and other emotions are normal and may even be adaptive. The exceptional circumstances of a national lockdown provide an opportunity to develop mental health literacy in the form of psychological first aid, to enable wider awareness of how individuals can contribute to listening and supporting others psychologically. This has potential implications for skilling clinicians and the public about responding to mental distress. As frontline health-care workers, general practitioners may themselves need to be recipients of psychological first aid and support as they deal with adverse consequences of the quarantine period.

Abstract:
Aims Psychological First Aid is a brief intervention based on international guidance from the World Health Organisation. Free to access online training in the intervention was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic in UK. We aimed to determine the uptake of Psychological First Aid training among healthcare workers in care homes in the UK and to assess its effects on their wellbeing. Design This was a sequential mixed methods design. Methods Healthcare workers (nurses and carers) working in care homes in the UK were surveyed about their uptake of Psychological First Aid, their stress, coping efficacy and the key concepts of Psychological First Aid (safety, calmness, hopefulness, connectedness, and accomplishment). Those that completed the Psychological First Aid training were asked to share their experiences via qualitative survey. Data collection was conducted between June and October 2021. Analyses included descriptive statistics and regression analysis. A six step thematic analysis was used to interpret the qualitative data. Results 388 participants responded to the survey. The uptake of Psychological First Aid training was 37 (9.5%). Psychological first aid was a significant predictor for coping efficacy (β = 17.54, p = .001). Participants with a physical or mental health condition experienced higher stress and lower coping regardless of PFA training. Four themes were identified from the qualitative analysis: self-awareness and growth, relationships with others, overcoming stress and accessibility. Conclusion While this study suggests some benefits to healthcare workers in care home settings undergoing PFA the poor uptake of the training warrants further investigation. Impact Care home staff need psychological support. This gap remains as few completed PFA training. This is the first study in UK and worldwide to look at the effects of psychological first aid on stress and coping in this population and it warrants further investigation.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop and assess an organizational intervention consisting of psychological first aid (PFA) and Open Space Technology (OST), and its impact on individual resilience and perceived organization support. Design/methodology/approach The study used a non-experimental, pre-test and post-test design. Measures of employee post-trauma, resilience and organizational support were measured before and after the PFA intervention. Findings Paired sample t-tests revealed significant pre/post-increases in individual resilience and perceived organization support. Correlational analysis revealed that resilience was associated with perceived organization support. Evaluations revealed that participants found the small group sharing, information about coping and the open space problem-solving activities particularly worthwhile. Research limitations/implications A limitation of the study was the lack of a randomized control group in the design. Future research may utilize more robust designs such as experimental and longitudinal studies to evaluate impact. Practical implications This study indicates how the use of an organization-based intervention can be adopted for employees who undergo an emergency in their workplace. The combination of PFA and OST was found to be valuable in improving individual resilience and perceived organization support. In addition, OST can better facilitate problem-solving performance in intact groups, as it enhances collective interaction and community efficacy among survivors. Originality/value The study contributes to the dearth of knowledge on the use of PFA when used in an intact organization as part of its crisis intervention.
