Abstract:

L'édition du recueil de harangues militaires que François de Belleforest fit paraître en 1572 propose la version française, augmentée de plusieurs textes récents, de l'original italien de Remigio Nannini. Or, la compilation, traduction et réécriture des exemples narratifs puisés à même une belle variété de textes antiques et contemporains, ne constituent guère des procédés inhabituels dans l'activité du polygraphe commingeois. Pendant les dernières années du règne de Charles IX en effet, Belleforest multiplie les publications d'œuvres historiques, tendance qui relève vraisemblablement d'une visée à caractère pédagogique et dont l'initiative ne se limite pas à la production de textes narratifs, sources d'enseignements pratiques et moraux, mais embrasse également les procédés de la persuasion délibérative et de la diplomatie. L'importante introduction qu'il attache à son texte livre une explication lumineuse sur cette opération didactique. Au lieu de proposer au lecteur qui souhaite se former à l'éloquence officielle une collection de préceptes abstraits, le compilateur lui offre une matière digne de susciter son admiration, voire un modèle à contempler. En mettant ainsi en valeur cette matière copieuse comme un véritable objet d'étude, Belleforest se rapproche de Quintilien qui conseille à l'orateur apprenti d'examiner plusieurs discours de grands orateurs saisis dans leur contexte originel. Afin d'orienter son lecteur studieux, il évoque dans l'introduction le principe ancien de l'evidentia, hérité de l'Institution oratoire, selon lequel il s'agit de mettre devant les yeux des auditeurs une image claire et détaillée, et dont l'objet privilégié demeure justement le récit historique.

Abstract:

La Cosmographie universelle de François de Belleforest, publicada en París en 1575, aborda el Caribe2. Este espacio está representado particularmente con datos sobre el mundo indígena ensamblados de forma arbitraria, pero llevando un orden temático. En este artículo mostraré cómo se entretejen las voces latentes en los capítulos caribeños de la Cosmographie universelle. Primeramente, mostraré algunos imaginarios europeos, específicamente franceses, sobre el continente americano. Seguidamente ahondaré en el método escritural utilizado por Belleforest para la construcción de dichos capítulos; para ello analizaré una a una sus fuentes. Finalmente mostraré y concluiré con los aspectos de construcción historiográfica más relevantes de su método de escritura.

Abstract:

The subject of analysis in this paper consists of two renaissance novellas: the author of the first novella is the Italian renaissance writer Matteo Bandello, while François de Belleforest is the author of its French translation/adaptation and the author of the second novella which will be analyzed, and which was inspired by a renaissance tragedy. The main theme of both of the stories is the elimination of a potential pretender to the throne of the Ottoman empire: the first story details the fratricide which took place when Mehmed II took the throne, while the other tells of Suleiman the Magnificent's execution of his son Mustafa because of an alleged betrayal. After pointing out the basic characteristics of Bandella's renaissance novella, as well as the newly made "tragic tale" subgenre it belongs to, special attention will be paid to the ways in which Bandello and de Belleforest tell of historical events: storied of the cruelty and depravity of Turkish sultans are a special - even if only literary - way of dealing with the objective threat which the Ottoman empire posed to Europe. Aside from the visible ideological motives, in the case of these authors, and especially François de Belleforest, there is a detectable tendency towards approaching the genre of tragedy. In this case, tragedy is, first and foremost understood as the display of pathetic and painful images; which is displayed through the aesthetic of suffering and the emphasis on such images within the narrative.

Abstract:

Les témoignages anciens et médiévaux de l’Afrique subsaharienne mentionnent un certain nombre de nations qui étaient soit physiquement extrêmement déformées, soit avaient des coutumes bizarres et inhumaines. Pendant la Renaissance, de tels récits avaient encore cours, bien que certains auteurs les aient remis en question et même rejetés. Cet article examine les raisons pour lesquelles les auteurs français André Thevet et François de Belleforest ont nié l’existence de telles nations. Les deux auteurs ont emprunté aux théories traditionnelles concernant ces nations monstrueuses, mais les ont adaptées à leur propre point de vue, illustrant ainsi la flexibilité avec laquelle les auteurs de la Renaissance sélectionnaient et interprétaient les savoirs qui leur étaient antérieurs.

Abstract:

Este artículo pretende poner de relieve una dimensión del trabajo de traducción efectuado por Agustín Pérez Zaragoza en la colección gótica titulada "Galería fúnebre" (1831), que fue considerada durante mucho tiempo como una obra original del autor. En esta obra, Pérez Zaragoza se inspira no sólo en una colección gótica francesa, las "Ombres sanglantes" (1820), de Pierre Cuisin sino también en las "Histoires tragiques" (1566), de François de Belleforest. Ahora bien, su comprensión de la traducción se parece más bien al concepto de adaptación, en particular en su consideración de la sensibilidad femenina y burguesa de su lectorado. El ejemplo de la traducción de la historia XXIII de Belleforest nos permitirá mostrar en qué medida la pudibundez del traductor o su atención a la decencia transforma el texto-fuente en una verdadera reescritura.

AbstractThis article shows how François de Belleforest (1530–83) adapted a variety of historical and geographical sources to meet the demands of the histoire tragique genre in composing three narratives set in the Americas. One recounts the destiny of conquistador Francisco Pizarro; another is the story of Marguerite de Roberval, who was allegedly marooned on a Canadian island; the third concerns Taino cacique Enriquillo’s heroic rebellion in 1520s Hispaniola. These narratives fostered a tragic image of the Americas that had a considerable influence on early modern readers, inviting them to ponder essential questions about European encounters with the American continent and its inhabitants.

Abstract:

This article explores a number of neglected cross-connections between English romantic drama from about 1585 to 1615, notably including Shakespeare’s last plays, and the French tragicomic tradition as it evolved prior to and beyond these dates. I suggest that dramatic and non-dramatic French models played a considerable part alongside Italian ones in stimulating development of what might be termed ‘tragedy with a happy ending’ in England, and that English texts, in turn, fed back into French practice. Attention is given to the precedent for key aspects of Pericles provided by François de Belleforest’s version of the Apollonius of Tyre romance.
