Abstract:
Image processing entered the era of artificial intelligence, and machine learning algorithms emerged as attractive alternatives for time series data processing. Satellite image time series processing enables crop phenology monitoring, such as the calculation of start and end of season. Among the promising algorithms, Gaussian process regression (GPR) proved to be a competitive time series gap-filling algorithm with the advantage of, as developed within a Bayesian framework, providing associated uncertainty estimates. Nevertheless, the processing of time series images becomes computationally inefficient in its standard per-pixel usage, mainly for GPR training rather than the fitting step. To mitigate this computational burden, we propose to substitute the per-pixel optimization step with the creation of a cropland-based precalculations for the GPR hyperparameters θ . To demonstrate our approach hardly affects the accuracy in fitting, we used Sentinel-2 LAI time series over an agricultural region in Castile and Leon, North-West Spain. The performance of image reconstructions were compared against the standard per-pixel GPR time series processing. Results showed that accuracies were on the same order (RMSE 0.1767 vs. 0.1564 [ m 2 / m 2 ] , 12% RMSE degradation) whereas processing time accelerated about 90 times. We further evaluated the alternative option of using the same hyperparameters for all the pixels within the complete scene. It led to similar overall accuracies over crop areas and computational performance. Crop phenology indicators were also calculated for the three different approaches and compared. Results showed analogous crop temporal patterns, with differences in start and end of growing season of no more than five days. To the benefit of crop monitoring applications, all the gap-filling and phenology indicators retrieval techniques have been implemented into the freely downloadable GUI toolbox DATimeS.

Abstract:
Accurate real-time density monitoring is crucial in quality control and quality assurance during the asphalt concrete (AC) pavement construction process. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology has shown great potential in the continuous real-time density prediction of AC pavement. However, it is not accepted as a routine method by transportation agencies in the United States due to the lack of validation under field testing conditions. In this study, three field tests were performed using GPR to estimate AC pavement density. The Al-Qadi-Lahouar-Leng model was used to predict the density from GPR signals. The reference scan method was used to remove the effect of surface moisture during construction. The gradient descent-based non-linear optimization method was used to reconstruct the overlapped GPR signals result from the use of thin AC overlay, which has been widely implemented as an AC pavement rehabilitation technique. Digital filtering and other signal processing methods were used to de-noise the signal. GPR results using the proposed methods were compared with field core data and nuclear gauge results. The results show that the proposed methods were effective in estimating in-situ AC pavement density using GPR. Continuous density estimation by installing GPR on the roller is suggested to provide real-time compaction monitoring during the AC pavement construction process.

Abstract:
Oxygen is one of the most important energies used in converter steelmaking processes of integrated iron and steel works. Precisely forecasting oxygen consumption before processing can benefit process control and energy optimization. This paper assumes there is a linear relationship between the oxygen consumption and input materials, and random noises are caused by other unmeasurable materials and unobserved reactions. Then, a novel hybrid prediction model integrating multiple linear regression (MLR) and Gaussian process regression (GPR) is introduced. In the hybrid model, the MLR method is developed to figure the global trend of the oxygen consumption, and the GPR method is applied to explore the local fluctuation caused by noise. Additionally, to accelerate the computational speed on the practical data set, a K-means clustering method is devised to respectively train a number of GPR models. The proposed hybrid model is validated with the actual data collected from an integrated iron and steel work in China, and compared with benchmark prediction models including MLR, artificial neural network, support vector machine and standard GPR. The forecasting results indicate that the suggested model is able to not only produce satisfactory point forecasts, but also estimate accurate probabilistic intervals.

Wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is among the most promising additive manufacturing techniques for metals because it yields high productivity at low raw material costs. However, additional post-processing is required to remove redundant surface material from components manufactured by the WAAM process, and thus the productivity decreases. To increase productivity, multi-variable process parameters need to be optimized, including thermo-mechanical effects caused by high deposition rates. When the process is modeled, deposit shape and productivity are challenging to quantify due to uncertainty in multiple variables of the complicated WAAM process. Therefore, we modeled the WAAM process parameters, including uncertainties, using a Gaussian process regression (GPR) method, thus allowing us to develop a WAAM optimization model to improve both productivity and the quality of the deposit shape. The accuracy of the optimized output was verified through a close agreement with experimental values. The optimized deposited material had a wide effective area ratio, small height differences, and near 90° deposition angle, highlighting the usefulness of the GPR model approach to deposit nearly ideal material shapes.

Due to the capabilities of non-destructive testing of inaccessible objects, GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) is used in geology, archeology, forensics and increasingly also in engineering tasks. The wide range of applications of the GPR method has been provided by the use of advanced technological solutions by equipment manufacturers, including multi-channel units. The acquisition of data along several profiles simultaneously allows time to be saved and quasi-continuous information to be collected about the subsurface situation. One of the most important aspects of data acquisition systems, including GPR, is the appropriate methodology and accuracy of the geoposition. This publication aims to discuss the results of GPR measurements carried out using the multi-channel Leica Stream C GPR (IDS GeoRadar Srl, Pisa, Italy). The significant results of the test measurement were presented the idea of which was to determine the achievable accuracy depending on the georeferencing method using a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver, also supported by time synchronization PPS (Pulse Per Second) and a total station. Methodology optimization was also an important aspect of the discussed issue, i.e., the effect of dynamic changes in motion trajectory on the positioning accuracy of echograms and their vectorization products was also examined. The standard algorithms developed for the dedicated software were used for post-processing of the coordinates and filtration of echograms, while the vectorization was done manually. The obtained results provided the basis for the confrontation of the material collected in urban conditions with the available cartographic data in terms of the possibility of verifying the actual location of underground utilities. The urban character of the area limited the possibility of the movement of Leica Stream C due to the large size of the instrument, however, it created the opportunity for additional analyses, including the accuracy of different location variants around high-rise buildings or the agreement of the amplitude distribution at the intersection of perpendicular profiles.

Abstract:
Bar top hollows (BTHs) are morphological elements recognized in modern braided rivers; however, information regarding their depositional features and types of filling units in ancient strata is unclear. This is an important reason behind why it is difficult to identify BTH units in subsurface reservoirs. A Middle Jurassic dryland sandy braided river outcrop in northwestern China is characterized in this study through the application of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveying and mapping, and ground penetrating radar (GPR). A workflow of UAV data processing has been established, and a 3D digital outcrop model has been built. By observation and measurement of the outcrop model and GPR profiles, two types of BTH filled units were found: (a) sandstone-filled, and (b) mudstone-filled hollows. Both of these units were located between two adjacent bar units in an area that is limited to a compound bar, and were developed in the upper part of a braided bar depositional sequence. The ellipse-shaped, sandstone-filled unit measures 10 m × 27 m in map view and reaches a maximum thickness of 5 m. The transversal cross-section across the BTHs displays a concave upward basal surface, while the angle of the inclined structures infilling the BTHs decreases up-section. The GPR data show that, in the longitudinal profile, the basal surface is relatively flat, and low-angle, inclined layers can be observed in the lower- and middle part of the sandstone-filled BTHs. In contrast, no obvious depositional structures were observed in the mudstone-filled BTH in outcrop. The new understanding of BTH has a wide application, including the optimization of CO2 storage sites, fresh water aquifers exploration, and oil and gas reservoir characterization.

Abstract The physical properties and application performance of rubber blends are highly dependent on the curing behavior of blend components, morphology, and network structure. Crosslink density or molecular weight between crosslinks characterizes the network structure. It is desirable to develop correlations between product attributes, such as flex, ozone resistance, and permeability with crosslink density of the individual phase in the blend. This will aid developing high performance rubber blends via curative systems, elastomer components and concentration, bromine composition distribution, and processing condition optimization. One major road block is to quantitatively and unambiguously measure the individual phase crosslink density in the blend. A method has been developed and verified with solvent freezing point depression technique. The method can quantitatively determine the individual phase crosslink density in polyisoprene (IR)/Brominated Poly-(isobutylene-co-paramethyl styrene) (BIMS) blends. The method is based on the principle that the molecular weight between crosslinks does not change in different solvents. This is coupled with mass balance equations to determine rubber volume fraction of each phase in the swollen blends. The crosslink density of each phase is then calculated by the Flory-Rehner equation. The method can evaluate the effect of curative distribution, processing conditions, and curative systems on GPR/BIMS blend performance. IR and BIMS blends were cured with zinc oxide and sulfur in this study. It was found that the IR and BIMS phase crosslink density reaches a plateau when the amount of the curing agent is greater or equal to 1.25 phr. The IR phase has a greater crosslinking density than the BIMS phase in the blends. These are valuable information to optimize the curative systems and enhance product attributes.

The recently introduced generalized Hamiltonian–Real (GHR) calculus comprises, for the first time, the product and chain rules that makes it a powerful tool for quaternion-based optimization and adaptive signal processing. In this paper, we introduce novel dual relationships between the GHR calculus and multivariate real calculus, in order to provide a new, simpler proof of the GHR derivative rules. This further reinforces the theoretical foundation of the GHR calculus and provides a convenient methodology for generic extensions of real- and complex-valued learning algorithms to the quaternion domain.

Summary Finding multiple posterior realizations through a reservoir history-matching procedure is of significance for uncertainty quantification, risk analysis, and decision making in the course of reservoir closed-loop management. Previously, an efficient, distributed, optimization algorithm—global linear-regression (GLR) with distributed Gauss-Newton (GLR-DGN)—has been proposed in the literature to iteratively minimize multiple objective functions by performing Gauss-Newton (GN) optimizations concurrently while dynamically sharing information between dispersed regions in a reduced parameter space. However, theoretically, the required number of initial training models should be larger than the number of parameters to guarantee a unique solution for the GLR equation for sensitivity-matrix estimation. This limitation makes the large-scale reservoir history-matching problem with a large amount of parameters almost intractable. We enrich the previous history-matching framework by integrating our recently proposed smooth local parameterization (SLP) and DGN for the sensitivity-matrix calculation. Motivated by the fact that one specific flow response mainly depends on a few influential or local parameters, which can be generally identified by the physical position of the wells (e.g., the parameters in the zone surrounding the wells), which is particularly true for large-scale reservoir models, this paper presents a new integration of subdomain linear-regression (SLR) with DGN, referred to as SLR-DGN. This SLP allows us to independently represent the globally spatial parameter field within low-order parameter subspaces in each subdomain. On the basis of the SLP procedure, only a few training models are required to compute local sensitivity of the response functions using a subdomain linear regression. SLP is a linear transformation with smoothness and differentiability, which makes it particularly compatible with Newton-like gradient-based optimization algorithms. Furthermore, we also introduce an adaptive scheme, named weighting smooth local parameterization (WSLP), in which the minimization algorithm adaptively determines the weighting coefficients and the optimal domain decomposition (DD) correspondingly, to mitigate the negative effects of an inappropriate DD strategy. We support our framework with numerical experiments for a four-variable toy model and a modified version of the sensitivity analysis of the impact of geological uncertainties on production (SAIGUP) model with spatially dependent parameters. Comparisons with previous GLR-DGN have shown that our new framework can generate comparable and even better results with significantly reduced computational cost. This SLP has high scalability, because the number of training models depends primarily on the number of local parameters in each subdomain and not on the dimension of the underlying full-order model. Activating more subdomains results in fewer local parameter patterns and enables us to run fewer training models. For a large-scale case study in this work, to optimize 412 global parameters, SLR-DGN needs only 100 initial-model simulations. In comparison to GLR-DGN where the parameters are defined over the entire domain, the central-processing-unit cost is reduced by a factor of several orders of magnitude, while retaining reasonable accuracy.

Quaternion derivatives exist only for a very restricted class of analytic (regular) functions; however, in many applications, functions of interest are real-valued and hence not analytic, a typical case being the standard real mean square error objective function. The recent HR calculus is a step forward and provides a way to calculate derivatives and gradients of both analytic and non-analytic functions of quaternion variables; however, the HR calculus can become cumbersome in complex optimization problems due to the lack of rigorous product and chain rules, a consequence of the non-commutativity of quaternion algebra. To address this issue, we introduce the generalized HR (GHR) derivatives which employ quaternion rotations in a general orthogonal system and provide the left- and right-hand versions of the quaternion derivative of general functions. The GHR calculus also solves the long-standing problems of product and chain rules, mean-value theorem and Taylor's theorem in the quaternion field. At the core of the proposed GHR calculus is quaternion rotation, which makes it possible to extend the principle to other functional calculi in non-commutative settings. Examples in statistical learning theory and adaptive signal processing support the analysis.

Abstract:
A linear programming optimization tool is useful to assist farmers with optimizing resource allocation and profitability. This study developed a linear programming profit optimization model with a silage supplement scenario. Utilizable kilograms of pasture dry matter (kg DM) of the total pasture mass was derived using minimum and maximum pasture mass available for beef cattle and sheep and herbage utilization percentage. Daily metabolizable energy (MJ ME/head) requirements for the various activities of beef cattle and sheep were estimated and then converted to kg DM/head on a bi-monthly basis. Linear programming was employed to identify the optimum carrying capacity of beef cattle and sheep, the most profitable slaughtering ages of beef cattle, the number of prime lambs (sold to meat processing plants), and sold store lambs (sold to other farmers for finishing). Gross farm revenue (GFR) and farm earnings before tax (EBT) per hectare and per stock unit, as well as total farm expenditure (TFE), were calculated and compared to the average value of Taranaki-Manawatu North Island intensive finishing sheep and beef Class 5 farming using Beef and Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) data. The modeled farm ran 46% more stock units (a stock unit consumed 550 kg DM/year) than the average value of Class 5 farms. At this stocking rate, 83% of the total feed supplied for each species was consumed, and pasture supplied 95% and 98% of beef cattle and sheep feed demands, respectively. More than 70% of beef cattle were finished before the second winter. This enabled the optimized system to return 53% and 188% higher GFR/ha and EBT/ha, respectively, compared to the average values for a Class 5 farm. This paper did not address risk, such as pasture growth and price fluctuations. To understand this, several additional scenarios could be examined using this model. Further studies to include alternative herbages and crops for feed supply during summer and winter are required to expand the applicability of the model for different sheep and beef cattle farm systems.

Abstract:
A wall climbing inspection robot has been designed to climb on safety critical concrete structures by adhering to reinforcement steel bars (rebars) using permanent magnets to generate the adhesion forces. Simulation and experimental validation has been performed to determine the optimum flux focusing magnet configurations with the robot operating on 30 to 35mm of concrete cover over rebars arranged in different patterns. The goal of adhesion force optimization is to be able to carry a ground penetrating radar (GPR) sensor which detects rebar corrosion, concrete delamination and concrete cover deterioration. The autonomous robot uses an ultra-wide band (UWB) localisation system and GPR data to control its motion trajectories to avoid regions where there is insufficient density of rebars. Non-destructive testing (NDT) inspection data acquired by GPR is transmitted wirelessly to a ground station for processing and monitoring by NDT technicians.

Abstract:
Alternative energy sources are more attractive now a day because of the vanishing of conventional sources in the next few decades, energy crisis and environmental effects. Solar PV and wind are the two emerging sources among the existing renewable energy sources. However intermittent nature and system cost are the two main limitations of renewable sources. Therefore hybridization of photovoltaic, wind with battery can overcome this drawback and improves the reliability as well as efficiency to some extent. The objectives considered in this work are to minimize the hybrid system cost and maximize the energy generation from PV and Wind with a new constraint of Grid Dependency Ratio (GDR). A new multi-objective optimization method is suggested in this work to achieve the aforementioned objectives. The proposed algorithm shows the quick convergence, improved accuracy and minimum processing time compared to the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm.

Abstract:
Enhancing image brightness under low light conditions is crucial. The traditional night vision technology depends on the development of photoelectric materials and accurate image processing algorithms. Inspired by the structure of elephant-nose fish, we construct a bionic image intensifier (BII) model. The BII is a planar array based on the concentrating principle of the compound parabolic concentrator (CPC). This solution is based on pure optical design and independent. Through light tracing, the simulation results show that the brightness of the image is improved and good image uniformity is obtained. Quantitative analysis of the geometric concentration ratio (GCR) and the image uniformity is used to optimize CPC structure parameters. At the same time, we also discuss the influence of CPC structural parameters on image continuity, uniformity and geometric concentration ratio. The optimization results are as follows: the input port diameter is 50 μm, the output port diameter is 10 μm, the height is 90 μm, the GCR is 5.61, and the image uniformity is 95.30%. The comprehensive performance of the BII achieves the best.
