Abstract:
With the requirements of regulatory bodies, customers and business partners, Chinese construction sector have been driven to imitate and implement green Supply Chain Management (SCM) for their companies, to gain economic benefits and to become sustainable. This research aims to investigate and identify green SCM practices that can potentially help improve environmental and economic performance of organisations in Chinese construction sector, leading to improved sustainability. With data collected from 103 companies in Chinese construction industry, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted to derive groupings of green SCM pressures/ drivers, practices and performance. Analysis of variance and t-tests were introduced to assess the variations in green SCM pressures/drivers, practices and performance for different sized enterprises and different industry sectors. Using regression analysis, relationships between green SCM pressures/ drivers, practices and performance were examined. To gain in depth insight into the causal relationship among factors obtained from the empirical studies, two case studies were conducted. This research also explored and identified gaps existing between green SCM in Chinese construction industry and British construction industry through benchmarking exercise. The main findings from the empirical studies result reveal that: 1) Regulations and internal factors are considered as important green SCM drivers and pressures. Medium and large sized Chinese companies face higher regulatory pressures than small firms. 2) Case studies confirm that green SCM is not a new concept in Chinese construction industry. Companies have begun to change their focus from improvement in one supply chain entity to the entire supply chain. 3) Chinese construction companies seem to be more matured in their adoption of green procurement practices than companies in building material sector. 4) There is not any significant relationship between green SCM practices and performance since most of the enterprises just initiate implementing green SCM practices. Medium and large sized companies in Chinese construction industry have better economic performance than small sized companies. The results from the benchmarking exercise against British construction sector reveal that: 5) Green SCM implementation in British construction sector is more comprehensive and effective because customers and suppliers in Britain have more proactive involvement in adopting green SCM practices.

Abstract:
Sustainability become a new challenge for various dimensions, not only in academic area, but also has managerial perspectives. Consequently, to achieve competitive advantage, leading to sustainable performance, organisations need to explore what are the causes of the sustainable performance of the firm and how to manage them. Currently, natural environmental impact is more likely to be a critical problem for any organisation. Based on natural resource-based view of the firm (Hart, 1995), natural environmental issues can make a firm obtain new potential specific resources that are difficult to imitate by other organisations. Such resources can be created by supply chain integration (SCI) and also green supply chain management (GSCM) practices. However, there is inconclusive about the impact of SCI and GSCM practices on sustainable performance, in terms of evidence environmental and economic perspective. Therefore, the aim of this study is to understand the relationship between SCI, GSCM practices and sustainable performance, both direct and indirect effect of the relations. Base on survey method, this research used manufacturers in Thailand as a sample of the developing countries to collect data which come from multiple manufacturing industries. The research methodology used the Churchill (1979) framework for specifying and generating measured items. Exploratory factor analysis was employed to extract the main factors before using structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the hypotheses. Measurement model was firstly used to evaluate all measures and structural model was employed to test theoretical hypotheses. The empirical results of this research conclude that SCI has no direct positive impact on sustainable performance. Nevertheless, environmental and economic outcomes can be achieved by mediating effect of GSCM practices. Therefore, this research contributes to theoretical and practical view. In academic perspective, researchers can extend this finding to study on this issue further, while in managerial view, practitioners or managers can apply this result to their business strategies to improve their organisational performance.

Abstract:
Today, many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) either go out of business or see their growth being stalled due to poor activity management and organization, which is why they are often unprepared to engage against large companies leading their competitive markets. This study aims to develop a comprehensive management model, exclusively designed for SMEs in the jewellery sector, which may encompass all areas that create value and make them competitive. The development of this comprehensive management model was deployed in 21 steps classified into three tiers based on three major philosophies. This study uses lean manufacturing to identify activities that add value and reduce waste, and lean green was used to provide the environmental care and culture approach required for a friendly and fair workplace environment. The selected scenario is a jewelry workshop, wherein techniques and tools were completely applied and yielded a 20% increase in operating performance and a 15% increase in annual return.

In addition, sought to identify the GSCM practices being adopted by companies in the study and indicate the main pressures (external and internal) for the adoption of these practices. It examine also if the pressures lead to adoption of GSCM practices and if these practices bring improvements in performance (environmental, economic and operational). In order to refine the theoreticalconceptual model of Santa Eulalia, et al. (2011) had conducted a multiple case study in four chemical companies. The companies are small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the State of São Paulo. The GSCM practices adopted by most companies researched were, respectively, the most adopted for the less practiced, Internal Environmental Management Cooperation with Customers, Green Purchasing, Eco-design and Investment Recovery. The pressures most cited by respondents were, respectively, Regulations, Internal Factor, Marketing, Suppliers and Competitors, and the Society was not considered by any company. It was also found that companies that receive greater pressure to adopt GSCM practices are not always the ones with more practices implemented. However, external and internal factors influencing pressure somewhat implementing GSCM practices. On the performance achieved with the adoption of practices, there is an awareness that bring improved environmental and economic performance. At the same time, the practice can lead to a negative economic impact, especially in the short term. It was also that the positive economic and environmental performance are interrelated. The improvement in operating performance is not perceived by the respondents of the researched companies. Few studies have been found on this issue in national literature, which this study is considered pioneer in research on the theme that analyze the relationships between pressures, practices and performances. Another contribution of the study involves the size of the studied companies, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), since they have few resources, making it difficult to stay in the competitive global market. Studies involving SMEs and to consider its context are relevant to help them gain competitive advantage.<br>Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo compreender como o Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) é adotado em pequenas e médias empresas do setor químico.

Abstract:
The subject of green management is today relatively unexplored in existing literature, especially regarding SMEs in logistics. To bridge this gap this study aims to find what factors influence the implementation of green management for SMEs in logistics. Furthermore, this study aims to address the influential weight of these factors to create an even greater understanding within the topic. The chosen research method of this paper is qualitative, and the empirical data is collected through semi-structured interviews with Swedish logistic companies who have acquired the environmental management system ISO 14001. Furthermore, the research approach of this study is deductive. When implementing green management, this paper has found 4 factors that influence a company in various ways. What also has been found is what factors that have more influential weight and are essential to make such implementation effective. The study provides both theoretical and practical implications. Theoretically it fills a gap current literature and further explains SMEs in logistics use of green management. Practically companies can draw from this study to see if they work effectively with green management or better prepare for a transition. The researchers of this study suggest that the factors of influence that are presented in the empirical findings should be tested in a quantitative study with a larger sample size to better measure the effect of each one in a practical context.

Abstract:
Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia e Gestão Industrial<br>In today’s global market, the environment of unpredictable events has imposed a competitiveness improvement that requires a greater coordination and collaboration among Supply Chain (SC) entities, i.e., an effective Supply Chain Management (SCM). In this context, Lean, Agile, Resilient and Green (LARG) strategies emerged as a response. However, interoperability issues are always presents in operations among SC entities. From the Information Technology (IT) perspective, among all the multi-decisional techniques supporting a logistics network, simulation appears as an essential tool that allow the quantitative evaluation of benefits and issues deriving from a co-operative environment. The present work provides a SC simulation model for analysing the effect of the interoperability degree of LARG practices in the SC performance, through Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) such as cost, lead time and service level. The creation of two scenarios with a different point of view about the LARG practices allowed to analyse which one contributes to the best SC performance. Since some of the inputs were assumed, it was made a sensitivity analysis to validate the output of the simulation model. Based on the creation of six types of math expressions, it was possible to establish the connection between the effect of the interoperability degree of LARG practices and the SC performance. This analysis was applied on a case study that was conducted at some entities of a Portuguese automotive SC. The software used to develop the simulation model is Arena, which is considered a user-friendly and dynamic tool. It was concluded that SCM, interoperability and simulation subjects must be applied together to help organisations to achieve overall competitiveness, focusing their strategies on a co-operative environment.

Abstract:
Considering the prominence of green supply chain management (GrSCM) research has developed expressively in this field. However, there is a dearth of studies from emerging economies comprised of modelling and empirical testing of hypotheses. Moreover, the literature is lacking the empirical evidence on the determinants of GrSCM practices by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) especially in the case of Pakistan. The literature has yet to determine what green practices are being adopted by SMEs in Pakistan, an elucidation why GrSCM practices are adhered, what construct is appropriate to evaluate adoption of GrSCM practices by SMEs in Pakistan, and whether mediation of internal factors exits between the relationship of GrSCM practices and external pressure. This dissertation uses Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to investigate GrSCM practices adoption, the appropriate construct for evaluating green practices, and examining three potentially important determinants in Pakistani SMEs. With the data collected in two stages from the SMEs sector of Pakistan, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed a three-dimension structure for measuring the GrSCM practices. Subsequently, the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was carried out on two measurement models (i.e. first and second order) of GrSCM adoption based on EFA. The empirically outcomes advocates that both models for GrSCM adoption are valid and reliable, however the second order model has better fit indices. The SEM testing shows significant results for mediation of internal factors in the hypothesized relationship among the GrSCM practices and external pressures. For academicians and supply chain mangers these results yield several exciting theoretical and practical implications.

Abstract:
The objective of this work is to identify the relationship between maturity levels of environmental management with the intensity of adoption of practices of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM), through the proposal of an integrative framework of these two concepts and a multiple case study. The factors that motivated the design of this goal are: the absence so far of an integrative framework between maturity levels in environmental management and GSCM practices; the scarcity of similar studies of the relationship of environmental maturity GSCM with companies located in developing countries, such as Brazil; and, finally, analyze the adherence of this integrative framework to companies belonging to sectors that have high environmental impact. To achieve the goal, a deep literature review was performed with the literature dealing with environmental management maturity, GSCM practices, obtaining a broader set of GSCM practices, and a unique integrative framework, here called \"Levels of maturity on GSCM\". To verify its adherence to the real world, five cases were analyzed in supply chains with high environmental impact. It was found that: (a) a company few had adopted GSCM practices motivated by compliance with strict environmental legislation; (b) a company had adopted an average number of GSCM practices, especially those relating to investment returns, driven by cost saving; (c) and three companies had adopted a large number of GSCM practices, having in common the adoption of GSCM practices types of internal environmental management, waste reduction and risk minimization and communication, motivated by obtaining competitive advantages. It was found a sensitive framework with the following classification levels of maturity on GSCM: (a) the first, reactive level GSCM with low adoption of GSCM practices motivated by legal restrictions; (b) the second level (preventive) GSCM, mean adopting GSCM practices, primarily related to saving costs; (c) and the third, (proactive) level in GSCM, where there is the search for competitive advantages. Additionally it was found a kind of pattern in the adoption of GSCM practices by firms, linked to each level of maturity in GSCM. It is believed that this evolutionary pattern of GSCM can be used by organizational leaders or public officials to foster the adoption of GSCM practices. This work, so far as is known to the author and to reveal where systematic searches conducted with the Web of Science and Scopus data bases, is the first study to relate maturity levels of environmental management practices of GSCM, applied to five cases with high impact environmental Brazil.

Abstract:
Problem – Companies are increasingly focusing on sustainability issues in response to internal and external pressure. Research on sustainable performance of focal companies is vast; however there is a lack of guidelines for managing sustainability in extended supply chains. Scholars claim a need for additional research on intra- and inter-organizational diffusion of best sustainable practices. Besides, the outcomes of sustainable sourcing practices are still uncertain. The gap between potential benefits of sustainable sourcing and actual performance is attributed to lack of capabilities, instruments, and efficient processes. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore existing sustainable sourcing practices which are used by leading multinational companies. Based on the obtained knowledge we aim to develop a framework that will suite as a guideline for enforcing sustainable sourcing practices. Method – The research has been conducted through the method of grounded theory, enabling the researchers to constructively interpret data from documentary primary data and semi-structured interviews. This approach was utilized in order to explore what are the most common practices of managing sustainable sourcing applied by the companies awarded as Industry leaders by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. Conclusion We found that a commonly accepted approach towards managing and enforcing sustainable sourcing is absent both in theoretical discourse and practice. However, the most frequently mentioned tools and approaches were defined. They include the adoption of suppliers’ code of conduct, establishment of dedicated sustainability departments, procurement personnel training, suppliers’ capability building, risk assessment and categorization of suppliers, IT platforms for information sharing, supplier self-assessment, audit, joint projects with suppliers, meetings and conferences, and suppliers’ scorecards. Finally, we developed a Sustainable Sourcing Enforcement framework which could serve as a guideline to enforce supplier’s commitment to act sustainably. The framework consists of five chronologically connected pillars: Objectives alignment, Commitment creation, Supplier selection, Ongoing development and Work with stakeholders.

Na conclusão, implicações teóricas e práticas dos resultados do estudo são discutidos e indicações para futuras pesquisas são elencadas.<br>This study analyzes the green practices in the agricultural supply chains of rice and peach, and examines their relationships with various categories and dimensions in the context of sustainable supply chain management/supply chains. The main objective of this study is to propose a model to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of green practices in agri-food supply chains. Existing theoretical research classifies green practices into 21 categories, which are grouped within three dimensions—strategy, innovation, and operations. Based on a systematic review of the literature, five hypotheses were proposed in this study, three of which associate the dimensions with competitiveness. On the other hand, the remaining two hypotheses take into consideration the relationships of reputation and result with competitiveness. A quantitative survey was conducted on 92 companies involved in the rice and peach supply chains. Factorial analysis was used to evaluate the reliability and validity of the constructs. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. The results were as follows: (i) no relationship was found between Strategy and Competitiveness; (ii) Innovation was positively associated with Competitiveness; (iii) the Operations dimension was strongly and positively associated with Competitiveness; and (iv) Result and Reputation were strongly and positively associated with Competitiveness. This research contributes to the literature by proposing a model that allows for the evaluation of green practices in rice and peach supply chains. In addition, the study conceptually and empirically examines the relationship between green practices and competitiveness of the (agricultural) supply chain” would read better here.

Abstract:
The thesis titled antecedents and enablers of green supply chain practices focuses on one of the most contemporary issues in supply chain management. The literature review explores the existing literature and research work on green supply chain practices and develops a framework for the research. The research is qualitative in nature and data was collected from the three automobile component-manufacturing companies in India. Semi structured interviews were conducted over a period of 18 months. There were three objectives for this thesis: 1. Describing the current state of green supply chain practices? 2. What are the antecedents and enablers for green supply chain practices? 3. What are the underlying mechanisms, if any? The research work concludes by answering all the above three questions and also gives the future direction for research. The research work started by finding a gap for the empirical research in the context of green supply chain practices. The objective of the research was to focus on antecedents and enablers of green supply chain practices. Some contextual factors, inhibitors and consequences are also emerged during the pilot case study. The research work is rigor and to ensure the rigor of the research design, five-stage process was used to structure the methodology. As a final check author assessed his research against the four basic tests commonly used in empirical research; construct validity, internal validity, external validity and reliability. The research study has contributed both to the development and testing of theory relating to the antecedents and enablers of green supply chain practices. The review of literature provided a synthesis of the underpinning bodies of literature that has not previously been conducted in this way. This resulted in the identification of ten core green supply chain practices for the development of antecedents and enablers that created the foundation for author’s empirical investigation. It was found that previous studies have been largely theoretical. The empirical studies that do exist have focused on one particular dyadic relationship with in green supply chain practices. A double contribution has been made to testing the theory of green supply chain practices from a process and output perspective. As process perspective, a contribution has been made to methodology by developing a robust approach for conducting supply chain research beyond the dyad. From output perspective, the author has the empirical results from the three individual case studies and their cross-case comparison for dissemination to an academic audience. Specific contribution of this research to theory development include: 1. Development of macro model of green supply chain practices with the inputs from literature. 2. The synthesis of ten core green supply chain practices with antecedents and enablers from existing body of literature enriched through empirical testing 3. Empirical derivation of three contextual factors. Although the research work is new and contribute to the theory and practices, there are still some limitations of this research. Two minor limitations have been identified: 1. Generalizability of result to practice to practice: Due to the limited size of the case study approach, the results can only be generalized to theory and not to practice. 2. Variation in quality of information: The scope of data collection for all three case studies was same still the quality of information gathered was different. As good quality cross-case analysis was still possible but the relative strengths of the three cases varied. Overall the research work is original, rigor, and contributes to the existing theory and also paves the path for future research work in the area of green supply chain practices.

Abstract:
Some business leaders in the manufacturing industry lack strategies to optimize green supply chain management strategies that increase profitability while reducing the carbon footprint. The lack of green supply chain strategies sub optimizes the use of resources business leaders use to meet their financial goals. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore successful green supply chain strategies leaders used to increase profitability while reducing the carbon footprint. The participants were 7 business leaders in one manufacturing organization headquartered in Massachusetts who have sophisticated green supply chain strategies in place. The natural resource-based view theory was the conceptual framework for this study. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and organizational documents. Through thematic analysis, 3 key themes emerged: environmental management strategies, profit-increasing strategies, and governance strategies. The findings of this study might be of value to business leaders to reduce costs and create sustainable, competitive supply chains using responsible methods. The implications for social change include the potential for leaders to preserve finite natural resources for future generations and reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing organizations.

Abstract:
<p> Research on carbon emission management is becoming a very important part of the green supply chain landscape as more businesses continue to make it part of their business strategy, amid pressures from customers, competitors and regulatory agencies. To contribute to the body of knowledge in this emerging research stream a series of lot size models that consider both economic and environmental performances are developed for the carbon emission conscious retailer, manufacturer and a combined model of the retailer and manufacturer. As a matter of expediency, the combined retailer-manufacturer model (Banerjee, 1986) is referred to as the system in this dissertation.</p><p> The carbon tax mechanism and carbon cap-and-trade mechanism are the most efficient market-based options used to lower carbon emission in practice. These mechanisms are integrated into the developed lot size models, the results of which could provide the carbon emission conscious retailer, manufacturer and the system with optimal lot size and cost strategies. The findings also shed more light for decision makers and policymakers on the impact of carbon tax and carbon trading regulatory policies on the business strategies of the firm. In addition, this dissertation contributes to the current sparse quantitative literature on carbon emission and green supply chain research.</p>

Abstract:
This thesis examines hotel food supply chain management practices and hotel food supply chains. The study is informed by qualitative data from 20 hotels of different characteristics. The results show three models of strategic sourcing strategy for affiliated hotels (chef-centred sourcing, centralised sourcing and flexible-centralised sourcing) and two models for independent hotel (chef-centred sourcing, and chef and owner sourcing strategy). Chef-centred sourcing can be a sourcing strategy for any type of hotel regardless of their affiliation; this sourcing strategy, however, is common among small group hotels, independent hotels and high-end hotel restaurants. Group hotels, however, are likely to employ a centralised-sourcing strategy with a degree of flexibility regarding supplier selection at property level. It was found that the higher the level of service, the more flexible the centralised sourcing strategy. These sourcing strategies have a strong, direct effect on how individual hotels source their food and therefore their food supply chain network structures. It is apparent that hotel food sourcing practice is complex and dynamic, and hotel business format is the main factor influencing individual hotel sourcing strategies. Hotel foodservice is characterised by low exploitation of information technology and manual-based supply chain activities with a high level of dependency on head chefs regarding supply chain performance. There is low level of implementation of supply chain initiatives among hotels in this study and the reason for this may be the products and production characteristics which differ from those in the retail sector. Although supplier cooperation and relationships between head chef and suppliers were found, there was an overall low level of collaboration between buyer and supplier. Consumer - ii - usage information was underutilised and under cultivated. Traditional arms-length buyer-seller relationships were commonly found in group hotels at both company level and property level. Overall hotel food SCM practice still displays traditional management characteristics and price-led decisions being apparent. An exception was found in high-end foodservice outlets and some outlets with chef sourcing strategies, where close long-term relationships between chefs and suppliers were found. The originality of this research lies in its attempt to fill a significant gap in hospitality management literature as well as to synthesise literature in the realms of supply chain management and hospitality management.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to find the relationship that exists between supply chain strategies and supply chain management practices at manufacturing companies. A sample of 195 firms in Colombia was used. Data analysis was performed in three phases. Initially, an exploratory factor analysis was carried out to identify the dimensions underlying each construct and derive, from the literature, a parsimonious configuration of supply chain management strategies and practices. Then, using a confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency and degree of fit of the measurement models was evaluated. Finally, a structural equation model was built to test the formulated hypotheses (CMIN/DF=1.865, RMSEA=0.067, CFI=0.884, IFI=0.888, PNFI=0.623). Results in terms of correspondence were dissimilar, as a positive and statistically significant link was found between the constructs lean supply chain strategy and relationship with supply chain partners (H1a, y11=0.750, p<0.01), lean supply chain strategy and information management (H1b, y21=0.705, p<0.01) and between agile supply chain strategy and relationship with supply chain partners (H2a, y12=0.420, p<0.01). However, links between lean supply chain strategy and postponement (H1c, y31=-0.182, p>0.01), agile supply chain strategy and information management (H2b, y22=0.201, p>0.01) and agile supply chain strategy and postponement (H2c, y32=0.227, p>0.01) were not supported by empirical evidence. This allowed concluding that planning and formulating a specific supply chain strategy must involve a joint deployment of the practices appropriate for materializing it and that not all supply chain management practices support fulfilling the goals defined for the chain. For future work, including an analysis of the effect of variables such as demand uncertainty, company size or type of industry in the evaluated relationship is suggested. The importance of longitudinal measurements or evaluations with a qualitative approach to understand the phenomenon being studied is also mentioned.<br>Tesis

Abstract:
<p> Green supply chain models and carbon emissions tracking have become increasingly prevalent in the supply chain management literature and in corporate strategies. In this dissertation, carbon emissions are integrated into cost-based freight transportation models that can be used to assist operations and supply chain managers in solving the "last mile problem". The models presented herein serve to provide the decision maker with choices on which strategy to implement depending on the strength of the management's desire to reduce carbon emissions. By comparing the optimal solutions that result from using different delivery strategies, this research provides a basis for evaluating an appropriate trade-off between transportation cost and carbon emissions. </p><p> This dissertation contributes to academia and the literature in several ways. The discrete supply chain models provide a method for decision makers to analyze and compare the lowest cost delivery option with the lowest carbon footprint option. The stochastic last mile framework that is introduced provides a method for researchers and practitioners to measure the expected carbon footprint and compare probabilistic costs, carbon emissions, delivery mileage, and delivery times in order to make decisions regarding the most appropriate delivery strategy. This framework is then applied to two different problem settings. The first involves optimizing a delivery fleet to produce the lowest total cost with carbon emissions integrated into the total cost equation. The second compares the carbon footprint resulting from last mile delivery (ecommerce retailing involving a central store delivering to end customers) to customer pick up (conventional shopping at a brick-and-mortar retail location); the break-even number of customers for carbon emissions equivalence provides a basis for companies to determine the environmental impact of last mile delivery and to determine the feasibility of last mile delivery based on objectives related to minimizing carbon emissions.</p>

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to investigate collaborative supply chain practices between Taiwanese and Chinese companies. To that end, we seek to address four main objectives: 1) to investigate and provide evidence of collaboration in supply chain management; 2) to evaluate supplier development within supply chain collaboration; 3) to investigate the internal processes of supply chain collaboration; and 4) to examine the outcomes of supply chain collaboration. To explore collaboration in supply chain management, we conduct an extensive review of the state of the art in collaborative supply chain, and we base our investigations and discussions on three real-life companies that practice collaborative supply chain methods in the target countries. Each study contains detailed information on each company, including the company’s background, history, culture, marketing strategy and their collaborative practices. We employ pattern-matching structures to analyse current collaborative practices, which allows us to determine the similarities and differences between theoretical collaboration and collaborative supply chain in practice. We have analysed both the literature and collaborative methodologies used by the companies in each case study, and we have identified a number of key findings that address each of the four research objectives. On one hand there is evidence to support the use of collaboration in supply chain management between Taiwanese and Chinese companies. However, to increase collaboration, we propose agreements between the countries and identification of key suppliers. On the other hand, dominant and powerful partners may prevent good collaboration within the supply chains. Therefore, in order to create an open minded and collaborative culture, we propose greater trust between Taiwanese buyers and Chinese and Taiwanese suppliers. The value in collaborative supply chain can then be realised, which has a positive impact on the business in terms of increasing competitive advantage and customer satisfaction. In addition, such collaborative practices provide the motivation for collaborative supply chain management between Taiwanese buyers and Chinese and Taiwanese suppliers.

Balasubramanian, Sreejith. "Green supply chain management : an investigation on the construction sector." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2017. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/22730/.

Full text
Abstract:
Environmental pollution and climate change have become one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century, which have forced governments and businesses alike to assess the environmental impacts of their activities. Among the sectors, construction is the single largest contributor of global carbon emissions, resource, water and energy consumption, and landfill waste. With environmental implications expected to be even greater in the future due to increasing urbanisation and the consequent increase in construction activities, curtailing the negative environmental impacts of the sector or greening the construction sector, therefore, has become critical. Unfortunately, any limited efforts to date to address these concerns have been less fruitful as most of these efforts have been largely fragmented and disjoint, addressing issues in an ad-hoc, standalone manner such as green design, green purchasing, green construction or environmental management systems; or management issues such as ‘drivers’ and/or ‘barriers’ affecting these specific green practices; or specific performance implications from these green practices such as environmental and/or financial performance. This lack of holistic orientation also carries the risk that practitioners and policymakers could mistakenly be addressing the wrong issues and neglecting aspects that have more significance in greening the sector. Given the environmental consequences of a construction project are typically dispersed across the different stages in the supply chain, i.e. from design through to end-of-life, and that several stakeholders, each with their own conflicting interests, are involved in the different stages of the construction supply chain, greening the sector, therefore, requires a supply chain wide focus, inclusive of all key stages and stakeholders (Developers, Architects/Consultants, Contractors and Suppliers). Therefore, the application of green supply chain management (GSCM) or incorporating environmental concerns into supply chain management (a systematic and integrated approach) makes perfect sense for greening the construction sector. GSCM contributes to greening by promoting supply chain-wide implementation of efficient and effective green practices by means of managing the ‘drivers’ and ‘barriers’ affecting its implementation to achieve the desired environmental performance along with short-term economic/cost performance and long-term organisational performance. This formed the focus of this study, wherein, it explores the application of GSCM in greening the construction sector. The study also explores the impact of firm size and ownership on GSCM, because, given the inherent complexity of the construction supply chain, i.e. it comprises of hundreds of firms with varying size and ownership, a comprehensive greening of the construction supply chain would not be possible without managing the impact of size and ownership on GSCM. Finally, given that GSCM understanding would be of limited value unless accompanied by general principles (theories) that inform wider application, the study utilises several established and emerging management/organisational theories to underpin the multifaceted reality of GSCM. In short, each of these GSCM aspects, i.e. green practices, green drivers and barriers, and green performance; and their interrelationships; and the impact of firm size and ownership on GSCM are investigated as separate research questions in this thesis. UAE is carefully chosen as the research setting for this GSCM study mainly because it gives an exemplary opportunity to understand the competing actions required from governments and construction sector firms to lessen the environmental impacts associated with the rapid urbanisation and economic modernisation. Specifically, on one side, the UAE construction sector is growing at more than 9% per annum, while on the other side several green initiatives are considered by practitioners and policymakers to reduce its environmental burden on the country. Therefore, the related findings are expected to be more practically relevant to comprehend the challenges and opportunities in the application of GSCM. A pragmatic, multi-methodology, sequential exploratory approach (i.e. the qualitative investigation followed by quantitative investigation) was employed to comprehensively answer the research questions. For the qualitative investigation, both semi-structured interviews (to explore and define each GSCM themes/sub-themes), and focussed, in-depth interviews (to gain operational/implementation level understanding) were employed. For the quantitative investigation, a structured country-wide survey was employed. The findings derived from the multiple methods (interviews and survey), were then combined to develop a comprehensive picture on the various facets of GSCM in relation to greening the construction sector. With regard to the findings, the important/relevant core green practices (or environmental activities/initiatives undertaken across each of the distinct functional stages of the supply chain) identified for greening the construction sector include green design, green purchasing, green transportation, green construction/manufacturing and end of life green practices, whereas the important/relevant facilitating green practices (or activities/initiatives undertaken to build internal environmental resources and capabilities) identified for greening the construction sector include environmental management systems (EMS) and ISO 14001 certification, cross-functional integration, environmental auditing, environmental training and green-related research and development. The extent of implementation of these practices, in general, was found to be the highest among Suppliers, moderate among Architects/Consultants and Contractors, and lowest among Developers. The important/relevant external green drivers (external forces/pressures that coerce firms to implement green practices) identified include government green-related regulation, supply chain stakeholder pressure, competitor pressure and buyer/end-consumer pressure, whereas internal green drivers (internal forces/pressures that motivate firms to implement green practices) identified include environmental commitment of firms, enhance reputation/brand image, to reduce costs and to enter foreign markets. The relevance/importance perceived by stakeholders shows that all stakeholders except Developers are more motivated internally than externally to engage in green practices. On the other hand, the important/relevant external green barriers (external forces that hinder or restricts firms from implementing green practices) identified include shortage of green professionals, shortage of green suppliers, tight and inflexible stakeholder deadlines and lack of stakeholder collaboration, whereas internal green barriers identified include high cost of implementation and lack of knowledge and awareness. The relevance/importance perceived by stakeholders shows that Developers and Suppliers perceive internal barriers more than external, while Architects/Consultants and Contractors were found to perceive external and internal barriers to be more or less the same. The study also identified several important/relevant performance measures to capture environmental, economic/cost and organisational performance that firms could operationalise to capture the benefits of green practices. With regard to actual improvement in these performances, all three performances were found to be relatively lower for Developers, while moderate to high for other stakeholders. With regard to the relationship between GSCM aspects, the extent of the impact of green drivers on green practices was found to far exceed the impact of green barriers on green practices, which self-explains the moderate extent of implementation of green practices across stakeholders. Moreover, it was found that both core and facilitating green practices have a significant and positive impact on three dimensions of performance across stakeholders, and the strength of impact, in general, ranged from moderate to high. Furthermore, facilitating green practices was found to have a strong and positive impact on core green practices. Finally, firm size and ownership was found to have a significant impact on the various GSCM aspects.<br>The study provides practitioners (across all stakeholders) with a potential stock of core and facilitating green practices that they could implement as well as potential performance measures they could operationalise in their respective firms. Also, it helps them to gauge the green drivers and barriers affecting their green practices implementation.

Abstract:
Dissertation to obtain PhD in Industrial Engineering<br>In order to increase partnership efficiency and truly meet the customers' demands, in today's business environment companies are operating in supply chains. Integration of supply chains facilitates minimizing diferent types of wastes and satisfying needs of the end customer. The first step toward supply chain integration is to understandand the customer values, and to reconfigure supply chain to support those values. The current research addresses supply chain integration through quantifying relations between supply chain practice and customer values. It employs Bayesian network and analytic network process as tools to quantify comparative relations among entities. The proposed approach starts with identifying trade-offs along customer values using Bayesian network. In parallel supply chain practices are comparatively analyzed through interviews with experts which is technically quantified using analytic network process. Thereafter, these two parallel phases join together to form a network of customer values and supply chain practices. The network is able to quantitatively identify relations among nodes; in addition, it can be used to plan scenarios and handle senstitivity analyses. This model is expected to be used by supply chain decision makers to have a quantitative measure for monitoring the influence of practices on preferences of the end customer. A survey and two case studies are discussed which go through aforementioned phases. The survey identifies and analyzes six customer values namely quality, cost, customization, time, know-how and respect for the environment. It makes input for the two cases which develop supply chain integration model for fashion and food industry. Supply chain practices are categorized into two groups of manufacturing and logistics practices. The two case studies include five manufacturing practices as cross functional operations, decrease work in process, implement standards, mixed production planning, and use recyclable materials as well as four logistics practices namely visibility to upstream /downstream inventories, information sharing with customer, implement logistics standards, and just in time.<br>Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - (MIT Project: MIT-Pt/EDAM-IASC/0022/2008)

Simangunsong, Eliot Sation. "Supply chain uncertainty : linking sources of uncertainty and management practices." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.556682.

Full text
Abstract:
Supply chain uncertainty is a key issue that affects firm competitiveness (1993; Yang et al., 2004); and, therefore, identifying the major sources of uncertainty within supply chains and developing strategies to manage them is an important challenge (Sabri & Beamon, 2000). There is an emerging literature on supply chain uncertainty but additional empirical research is required to further develop understanding of this phenomenon. This leads to an important research question to explore what sources of uncertainty can be identified in practice, what are the dimensions of these sources, and how can they be managed. To address this research question, this thesis has developed a theoretical model of supply chain uncertainty. Using this theoretical model to structure the investigation, an empirical study has been conducted in the food industry in Indonesia with twelve inter-related companies (4 suppliers, 4 iv manufacturers, and 4 retailers). Twenty three semi-structured interviews with thirty two senior representatives from the twelve companies have been conducted; interviews were audio and video recorded, and analysed using Atlas.ti. A comprehensive approach, which goes beyond previous studies, has been undertaken. Fourteen sources of uncertainty, including those internal to the firm (e.g., manufacturing process), internal to the supply chain (e.g., supplier) and external (e.g., environment) have been explored and twenty two management strategies for reducing or coping with the relevant dimensions have been identified Other research contributions are also identified such as the dynamic and multi dimensional process of managing sources of uncertainty. The findings of the thesis have implications for managers. For example, reducing uncertainty strategies such as collaboration are generally preferred over coping with uncertainty strategies but are difficult to implement when sources of uncertainty span beyond the boundaries of the firm. Future research should explore issues emerging from this study, such as ethical issues affecting supply chain uncertainty. Keywords: Supply chain uncertainty; uncertainty management; case study research.

Abstract:
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) contribute significantly to both local and global economic development. They are a crucial business sector for all nations’ economies. In developed countries, SMEs typically account for 60 per cent of employment, and the figure is even higher in developing countries. In 2011, Thai SMEs employed 83.9 per cent of the Thai workforce. Thai SMEs, like all other firms, face the challenge of satisfying customers by offering quality products at low prices. Furthermore, it is generally argued that, in this increasingly aggressive business world, competition arises between integrated supply chains rather than at the firm level. Therefore, effective supply chain management (SCM) is a key driver of sustainable competitive advantage. However, Thai SMEs have issues in adopting supply chains in their organisations. They have doubts about whether SCM will improve firm performance. Therefore, this study aims to reveal whether SCM practices could help Thai SMEs to improve their performance, and if so which ones and how. To fill the gap in theoretical understanding, an initiation mixed method research design was specified using 20 semi-structured interviews and quantitative questionnaires distributed to 311 subjects. An SCM practices model with antecedents and consequences was identified using previous research. The measurements were evaluated, modified and analysed using several techniques, such as thematic analysis, regression and structural equation modelling. The study makes several notable findings. Firstly, the SMEs were found to implement SCM to reduce costs and improve productivity rather than to satisfy the customer. Secondly, the IT system and top management support were two key factors in helping SMEs to successfully apply SCM. Thirdly, the major barriers to SCM were employees’ lack of understanding and improper organisational design. Fourthly, firm size had no significant relationship to the level of firm performance. Finally, the firm’s performance and SCM practices were positively correlated. This work contributes to academia by expanding research into SCM practices in SMEs, of which there is a dearth in the literature (Quayle, 2003, Meehan and Muir, 2008), especially in the context of developing countries (Katunzi and Zheng, 2010). For practitioners, regarding SMEs in Thailand and other developing countries, this study confirms that SCM practice assists SMEs to gain higher performance. Furthermore, for policy makers, enhancing SCM practices in SMEs by developing SCM enablers such as IT systems and standard performance measurement and metrics, could help SMEs to achieve higher performance.

Colesky, Yolanda. "Investigating sustainable supply chain practices within the luxury brand market." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/14917.

Full text
Abstract:
Luxury fashion brands seem to contradict sustainability. The values of sustainability are commonly associated with terms such as sharing, collaboration, austerity, and collective thinking. Luxury, however, is associated with excess, self-indulgence, delight and decadence (Kapferer & Bastien, 2012:360). Further paradoxes exist where the apparel of the luxury consumer is often manufactured by labourers in low wage-paying producing countries. High wastage is evident in the seasonality of the fashion industry. However, work opportunities are created by the fickleness of the fashion industry and the constant need to own the most current designs (Black, 2012:8). Owing to the high visibility of luxury fashion and the contractions between one -- on the one hand -- supplying income to families by way of employment and -- on the other hand -- not complying to sustainable international human resource practices, fashion brands are the focus of many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that use the mass media to expose any social wrongdoing in the industry. Luxury fashion brands are constantly in the spotlight, as highlighted in articles posted by the Clean Clothes campaign, a custodian for employees in the global garment industries; Greenpeace; and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). An example of such practices was when Greenpeace reported in 2009 that shoe brands such as Timberland and Clarks were manufactured from leather sourced from the hides of cattle in illegally deforested areas in Brazil. This provided negative publicity for these luxury shoe brands as well as for the Brazilian government that was financing this project (Vurro, Russo & Perrini, 2009:609). The luxury fashion brand industry, as well as the consumers of luxury fashion labels, are accused -- often only for the sake of sensationalism -- of living in the lap of luxury whilst maintaining a supply chain that is riddled with unsustainable practices. The social structure and hierarchy of patrons within a community have, since the Middle Ages, been signalled by the clothes they wore. Social class was a birthright. Today, sporting luxury brands continues to serve as status symbols, but unlike mediaeval times, it is not limited to people with a high social standing at birth as one can work for status, and purchase the items because one deserves them. (Han, Nunes, & Drèze, 2010:15). In 2009, during the International Herald Tribune (IHT) Suzy Menkes, the fashion editor at The Herald, called for “luxury”’ and “fashion” to be separated. Luxury prides itself in its handcrafted garments manufactured by respected tradesmen in the industry. The outcome is that the manufactured goods are made to last a lifetime (Gibson, 2012:23).

Abstract:
Sustainable development is an eternal topic and the enterprise’ sustainability provides the answer. Furthermore, emerging market’s sustainable development is frequently mentioned recently due to the serious pollution and waste due to the blind pursuit of higher GDP (Colm, 2012). This paper aims to find out the drivers and barriers of green supply chain management (GSCM) implementation; and figure out how to strengthen the relationship between green purchasing (GP) and GSCM based on the single-case study of Guitang Group. Combining the qualitative and quantitative method, we try to explore and describe the influence on GSCM development caused by the specific background of China. Based on the suggestions of how to strengthen the relationships between GP and GSCM, it will be more efficient for us to find a suitable way for manufacturing industrial companies in China to achieve the path from green purchasing to green supply chain management.

Abstract:
Dissertação para obtenção de grau de Mestre em Engenharia e Gestão Industrial (MEGI)<br>Supply Chain Management has become a tactic asset for the current global competition situation. Innovative strategies such as Lean, Agile, Resilient and Green emerged as a response, requiring high levels of cooperation and of great complexity. However, the strategic alignment of operations with partners in supply chains is affected by lack of interoperability. The present work provides a framework to enhance SC competitiveness and performance by assessing interoperable SCM Practices applied in automotive industry. Through a pragmatic interoperability approach, this methodology describes in detail the form of application using analytical hierarchical process (AHP) and Fuzzy sets as support decision making models, ensuring a systematic approach to the analysis of interoperability with appropriate criteria for assessment of situations that require high levels of collaboration between partners. Through a case study in a Portuguese automaker, it was possible to test the methodology and analyse which areas lack interoperability in the implementation of SCM practices.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to explore green sourcing in supply chain management by the example of two large organisations. Design/methodology/approach – This study followed an iterative cycle of reviewing literature and empirics as well as conducting analysis and discussion. The literature gathered for this thesis was collected by reviewing ten academic journals as well as publications found through database search. Empirical data was collected from two case organisations, ABB Robotics and Vattenfall, through interviews, internal documents and public statements. The empirical data was analysed separately for each case organisation by use of an analytical model constructed from the literature findings. Thereafter, similarities and differences between the organisations were discussed as well as the thesis’ contributions to green sourcing literature. Findings – We found that although both ABB Robotics and Vattenfall incorporate environmental sustainability to some degree in their respective sourcing processes, their individual performance differed. The main difference between the organisations was found to be the visibility and managerial drive towards the realisation of environmental goals within the sourcing department. From our observations, it was found that Vattenfall to a large extent embraced their environmental goals and that these trickled down to the sourcing department. ABB Robotics on the other hand had numerous environmental goals on corporate level but these lacked visibility in the sourcing department. In comparison to our literature findings is was found that for environmental goals, Vattenfall was in more alignment with the suggestions by the scholars. For the other identified areas important for green sourcing, that being supplier assessment, supplier performance evaluation and supplier collaboration, both organisations were more aligned with our literature findings. Practical implications – In this thesis, four primary elements of green sourcing have been identified: environmental goals, supplier assessment, supplier performance evaluation, and supplier collaborations. Out of these, we found that the first element, environmental goals, is an enabler for the other elements of green sourcing to further evolve and is therefore essential for green sourcing. Originality/value – By looking beyond public statements and policies of environmental sustainability, this thesis has provided a unique insight in how two large organisations have implemented environmental sustainability in practice, from a sourcing perspective.

Abstract:
Small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) make up between 95%-99% of private businesses worldwide, employ 60%-70% of the workforce in most countries and generate 33% of the GDP. SMEs account for a high percentage of the world's pollution because of the significant numbers of SMEs, and their accumulative impact. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies SME supply chain leaders used to implement green supply chain management (GSCM) policies that increase productivity and decrease losses. The origin of GSCM originates from the research of Ayres and Kneese. A purposeful sample of 3 SME construction companies was selected because of their success in creating strategies resulting in increased productivity and decreased financial losses in Summit County, Ohio. Company documents were reviewed and, member checking, artifact analysis, and reflective journaling were utilized to validate the dependability of the findings. Four main themes were identified: (a) onboarding, (b) fiscal management, (c) policy, and (d) infrastructure. The descriptions provided by SME leaders contributed to exploring the phenomenon in an actual setting. The results of this multiple case study may provide strategies leaders can use to increase productivity, minimize losses, and contribute to social change by decreasing hazardous chemicals and employee health problems.

Abstract:
The environmental variant of Supply Chain Management, also known as the Green supply chain management, aims to minimize or eliminate negative environmental impacts.  Unnecessary transports are a negative environmental aspect and means negative environmental impact. Although transports affect the environment, there is little research on the relationship between transport and Green supply chain management. The purpose of the study is therefore to design a strategy for achieving Green supply chain management and reduce unnecessary transport with a focus on uncertainty, variability and transparency. Method- To enable the answering of purpose, a case study conducted with the help of literature and a case company. Results- The case company is negatively affected by uncertainty, variety, and also by a lack of transparency in the supply chain. Unnecessary transportations through recalls are created because of quality defects. This creates obstacles for a supply chain management strategy to be more effective. A systematic approach by Plan-Do-Check-Act can help the case company to create a stable basis and achieve green supply chain management. It is necessary to conduct Plan-Do-Check-Act with good communication in order to create transparency, prevent uncertainty and variation. Green supply chain management can be achieved through a combination of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and Lean. These parts should be conducted with PDCA, which can reduce unnecessary transportation.

Abstract:
碩士<br>龍華科技大學<br>商學與管理研究所<br>100<br>Environmental pollution has become the most significant issue in the world. The European Union established stringent environmental regulations to curtail pollution which forced the automobile manufacturing enterprise to comply with environmental protection policies without losing their competitiveness Manufacturers began to implement green supply chain management (GSCM) to address these concerns. They have positively recognized the influence of GSCM on environmental and economic performance. GSCM has emerged as a practical approach that reduces environmental issues while also providing economic benefits to manufacturers. GSCM is an increasingly ethical practice among companies that are seeking to improve their environmental performance (e.g., reflecting the values of internal environmental management and external GSCM) and commerciality (e.g., gaining a competitive advantage by signaling environmental concern). Intensive studies have been conducted by practitioners and academicians on these issues. However, evaluations on performance studies are limited. This study used a combination of the fuzzy set theory and Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory method to explore the influential criteria of performance in the automobile manufacturing industry. This hybrid method evaluates performance to determine key factors that improve the green performance of manufacturers and provides a novel approach decision making in GSCM implementation. This study is beneficial for scholars and experts because it recognizes the cause and effect criteria using a visual diagram. The managerial implications of this study and directions for future research are also discussed.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣海洋大學<br>航運管理學系<br>101<br>Uprising concerns on environmental protection is driving people, organizations, companies and countries to make their part of contributions; among them, the biggest focal point is green supply chain management (GSCM). Semiconductor, as the head of all electronics industry, is in a critical position of the eco-system; and the implementation of its green supply chain is in a mature stage. However, the backgrounds of the implementation and actual practices are still behind a mystical veil; associated literatures of this particular topic are still scarce. Thus, this research is dedicated to consolidate actualities and reveal key findings of the issue. Firstly, importance analysis method is applied to identify the level of importance separately in driving factors and practices; secondly. Secondly, fuzzy AHP is utilized to find out the relative weight of criteria and sub-criteria in each aspect. Several key findings are concluded. In the sixteen driving factors, pressure elements outnumbered initiative elements as the major force of implementation; while in the seven practices, green manufacturing, green product and green objectives are most important criteria. Moreover, the study discovered that actual practice of semiconductor industry is corresponding with seven standard functions of a company. Managerial implication and recommendations for future research are also summarized in this research.
