Abstract:

The diploma thesis is focused on the application of modern technologies in ski helmets development. In the theoretical part is performed the research of the protective gear for skiers including the characteristics of production technologies used for its production. Part of the thesis is also the characteristics of Reverse Engineering and Rapid Prototyping. The practical part deals with the design of the ski helmet using modeling clay with the following conversion to a computer model and editing in available CAx program. Part of the practical part is also production on 3D printer. The thesis is concluded with a technical-economic evaluation of applicated modern technologies used for prototype helmet model production.

Abstract:

The McCartney Mountain salient is a distinct convex-east segment of the Sevier fold-and-thrust belt in southwest Montana, lying east of the Pioneer batholith and west of basement-cored Laramide uplifts. Prominent features of the central part of the salient include the in-sequence Sandy Hollow thrust fault (displacing Permian over Lower Cretaceous strata), and hanging wall and footwall syncline-anticline pairs that display complex intra-formational duplexes and parasitic detachment folds at all scales. Cleavage occurs in the argillaceous carbonate members of the Cretaceous Kootenai and Triassic Dinwoody formations throughout the area. Cleavage has been systematically mapped and characterized according to morphology, domainal spacing and orientation for all exposed outcrops of a distinctive yellowish dolomitic unit in the lower limestone member of the Kootenai. Cleavage within this unit exhibits planar morphology with domainal spacing at the mm-cm scale, classified as moderate to very strong spaced cleavage. Structural orientation data divides the cleavage into two populations. S1 is defined by cleavage that trends N-S, dips east, and is inferred to be reoriented axial planar cleavage that may have been modified during late-stage shortening as the frontal fold-and-thrust system impinged against basement uplifts in the foreland. S2 is recognized by E-W striking cleavage that dips within 10Â° of vertical, cross cutting hanging wall, and footwall folds in the area. S2 is inferred to have formed during the final stages of deformation in the Sandy Hollow fold-and-thrust system. S2 may reflect N-S shortening caused by lateral forces along the salient boundary as the fold-and-thrust system propagated eastward into the salient nose.

Abstract:

The horseracing industry currently lacks media attention. Studies have indicated the sport’s viewing and gambling declination over the decades. While popular televised sports such as football and baseball maintain a modernized entertainment culture through high-definition wireless streaming, horseracing remains in the 'binocular era'. An idea is introduced and a solution is analyzed to establish a foothold for horseracing in contemporary entertainment and inspire a developing fan base. EquiSight LLC desires wireless telemetry within the form factor of a jockey's helmet to meet these ends. The system devised must function while satisfying safety regulations. Individual component decisions are justified in addition to safety and quality tests. Current technology restricts bandwidth and data transfer rate. Standard-and high-definition possibilities and implications are discussed. Analog and digital transmission systems are evaluated and a preference justification is developed. A reliable power source and integration technique are chosen. Environmental, space, and range constraints are considered. Two-way audio communication between the jockey and trainer is described. In summary, a compact solution for EquiSight LLC is presented and its design choices are reviewed. The proposed system, implemented within a $3000 budget, will attract new fans, reignite interest, and provide a fairness and/or outcome judging tool.

Abstract:

The research presented herein is an analysis of acceleration measurements of the head during helmet-helmet impacts, where a playerâ s helmet impacts another playerâ s helmet, and with a youth population in football. This research is aimed at advancing current understanding of impact biomechanics for two specialized groups. The first study is an observational analysis focusing on helmet-helmet impacts, and the difference in effective mass and head acceleration measurements between the striking player and the struck player. The study involved working with football players outfitted with a sensor integrated into their helmets containing a 6 accelerometer array, capable of measuring linear accelerations and estimating angular accelerations. To evaluate helmet-helmet impacts, video analysis of past NCAA football competitions between Virginia Tech and University of North Carolina (UNC) were utilized to identify these impacts between instrumented players. A force balance was then carried out for the observed impacts and their respective acceleration measurements to compute the effective mass of the players. It was determined that the total mass recruited by the striking player was 28% to 77% more than that of the struck player. The second study focused on documenting the head impact biomechanics of a youth population. To accomplish this objective, unique accelerometer arrays, capable of measuring linear and angular accelerations, were integrated into existing youth football helmets for 7 players on a local team. Acceleration data were collected for every practice and game during the 2011 season to amass a total of 748 impacts. No instrumented player sustained a concussion during the 2011 season. Results of the study indicated impacts of greater magnitudes were more likely to occur in practices, and can be minimized by augmenting practice activities.<br>Master of Science

Abstract:

Les protéines membranaires représentent environ le tiers des gènes dans les différents génomes séquencés. La prépondérance de ce type de protéines en terme de cibles thérapeutiques (50 % des médicaments) ainsi que leur implication dans beaucoup de phénomènes cellulaires tel que la transduction d'énergie, le transport de nutriments et la signalisation reflètent leur importance. Les interactions entre protéines membranaires jouent un rôle primordial dans leur structure, leurs fonctions et leur assemblage en complexes. La fonction de la plupart des protéines membranaires est liée à l'assemblage de leurs segments transmembranaires TMs dans la bicouche lipidique. Les segments TMs sont des morceaux de séquences majoritairement hydrophobes d'environ 20 résidus adoptant une structure en hélice alpha. En fait, les interactions entre hélices TMs sont essentielles pour le repliement des protéines membranaires et leur organisation dans la membrane. Pour cette raison, des interactions qualitatives entre domaines TMs de différentes protéines bitopiques ont été caractérisé en utilisant le système du double hybride bactérien (BACTH) basé sur une complémentation protéique de type adénylate cyclase. Ce système a révélé des interactions homo- et hétérologues entre des domaines TMs appartenant à deux familles de récepteurs humains, la famille des récepteurs du facteur de croissance épidermique à activité tyrosine kinase (EGFRs) et les Neuropilines<br>Many cellular and biochemical processes/activities are actually carried out by the complexome, which is defined as a set of protein complexes. Identification and characterization of the complexome are essential for a comprehensive understanding and global visioning of cell functions since protein-protein interactions are the core of an entire interactomics system of any living cell. Membrane proteins make up to 30% of proteomes in eukaryotes and prokaryotes. They form a major class of proteins that are essentially involved in vital processes including bioenergetics, signal transduction, cell adhesion, catalysis and so on. Thus, they also represent more than 50% of all currently available drug targets. The function of most membrane proteins is inextricably linked to the proper packing and assembly of their transmembrane (TM) segments in the lipid bilayer. So, deciphering the contribution of TM domains interaction in the assembly of protein complexes will help to understand the dynamic assembly of membrane proteins complexes which are most important in cell signaling. For this reason, qualitative interactions between the TM domains of different bitopic proteins have been characterized using the bacterial adenylate cyclase complementation assay (BACTH). This system has been successfully adapted in the lab to study the homo- and heteromeric associations of selected TM sequences, using well characterized interactions as controls. Moreover, BACTH has revealed TM interactions of two major classes of mammalian membrane receptors, the family of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) which belongs to receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) superfamily and the neuropilins

Abstract:

The effect of striking compliance in ice hockey impacts, and its influence on dynamic response and brain tissue strain was investigated in this study. In hockey, players can experience a broad range of striking/surface compliance during a head impact, from the stiff ice surface to highly compliant player collisions. An increase in striking compliance has been shown to extend the duration of an impact that is associated with an increase in risk of sustaining brain injuries. Three striking caps of low, medium, and high compliance were used to impact a helmeted 50th percentile Hybrid III male headform attached to an unbiased neckform. Each level of compliance was used to impact five high risk locations at three different velocities, representative of head impact scenarios in ice hockey. The dependent variables, peak resultant linear accelerations and peak resultant rotational acceleration as well as MPS, were analyzed using a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to determine if there were significant differences between the three controlled variables. The results demonstrate a significant effect of compliance, over the influence of velocity and acceleration. Conditions of low impact compliance resulted in higher response values compared to impacts of increased compliance. That being said, high compliance conditions remained in the range of concussion risk, even at the lowest velocity. The use of brain tissue modeling, compared to dynamic response alone, demonstrated an elevated risk of brain injury as a result of extended impact durations. Impact compliance in hockey is a factor that has not been considered when designing and testing helmet technology. The results of this study demonstrate that compliance is a determining factor in producing brain injury, and should be incorporated into helmet standard testing to mitigate risk. The results of this study have implications on brain injury risk that extend beyond the impacting scenarios of ice hockey. The results can be extrapolated to any contact sport that includes impacting scenarios against varied impacting compliances such as football and rugby.

Abstract:

Under de senaste årtiondena har det kommit att riktas kritik mot de sätt som museer ställer utoch arbeta med föremål. Ofta har kritiken riktats mot hur museer gett uttryck för etnocentrismoch nationalism men också mot att museer har ett maskulint och evolutionsinriktat framställningssätt.I den nya museiologin som växt fram vill man istället belysa hur den kunskap sommuseet skapar är kontextuell och situerad i sin samtid. Många museer har kommit att arbetamed besökaren och betraktaren på nya sätt och bjuder in denne till utforskande och deltagande. Med den nya museiologin som bakgrund vill denna studie undersöka hur Nationalmuseum iStockholm har valt att utforma sin pedagogiska verksamhet. I uppsatsen undersöks museetsverksamhet som riktar sig till grundskolan åk 4-9 samt gymnasiet. Eftersom museet framföralltställer ut och arbetar med äldre konst tänker jag mig att detta också innebär att det finnstraditioner av hur sådan konst visas upp och lärs ut, men att verksamheten också måste förhållasig till den kritik som den nya museiologin innebär. Undersökningen efterfrågar såledeshur museets pedagogiska verksamhet ser ut och varför den ser ut på detta sätt. Men också vadverksamheten får för konsekvenser för positioneringen av betraktare såväl som konstverk. Jagundersöker detta genom att delta i undervisningssammanhang på museet samt genom intervjuermed pedagoger på museet. Verksamheten analyseras med hjälp av Helene Illeris beskrivningav dominerande konstpedagogiska diskurser och hur dessa positionerar olika personerpå museet. Trots att Nationalmuseum många gånger ställer ut sina samlingar ganska traditionellthar man i den pedagogiska verksamheten valt olika grepp för att ge eleven andra ingångartill konsten. Museet arbetar med tematiserade visningar och program där man knytersamlingarna till en nutida bildkultur. I verksamheten arbetar man med bildtolkning samt försökerbjuda in eleverna till diskussion och även till viss del överlämna den kulturella auktoritetentill eleverna. I examensarbetets gestaltande del undersöker jag hur man kan arbeta medäldre konst utan att sätta in det i konsthistorisk epok eller diskutera konstnärens intentionermed verket. Jag skapar en berättelse om Myrons diskuskastare med hjälp av film som också belyser positionering och seende på ett konstmuseum. Abstract:

This is a study of the use of language in Joseph Heller's novels Catch-22, Something Happened, Good as Gold, God Knows and Picture This. Heller's fiction is characterized by self-negating sentences and logic, a repetitive story line and circular structure. Each novel concerns the relationship between people and language, but the relationship invariably is circular and inherently non-progressive. The separation between people and language, analogous to the separation between existence and expression, is the basis for Heller's thematics.<br>Joseph Heller is a novelist who writes about language. Heller's novels all contain or evoke a common system characterized by self-containment and self-reference. In this system, language and literature are self-referential. It is implicit within Heller's writing that literature is a self-contained, non-progressive system, and consequently, it cannot yield a conclusive resolution. The self-contained system of his novels becomes analogous for literature, language, and finally knowledge. Definitive knowledge, being a derivative of language, is impossible. Eventually, Heller's fiction allows no final resolution because of the inconclusive nature of language itself.
