Kamolnick, Paul. "The Al-Qaeda Organization and the Islamic State Organization: History, Doctrine, Modus, Operandi, and U.S Policy to Degrade and Defeat Terrorism Conducted in the Name of Sunni Islam." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2017. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/121.

Full text
Abstract:
The al-Qaeda Organization (AQO) and the Islamic State Organization (ISO) are transnational adversaries that conduct terrorism in the name of Sunni Islam. It is declared U.S. Government (USG) policy to degrade, defeat, and destroy them. The present book has been written to assist policymakers, military planners, strategists, and professional military educators whose mission demands a deep understanding of strategically-relevant differences between these two transnational terrorist entities. In it, one shall find a careful comparative analysis across three key strategically relevant dimensions: essential doctrine, beliefs, and worldview; strategic concept, including terrorist modus operandi; and specific implications and recommendations for current USG policy and strategy. Key questions that are addressed include: How is each terrorist entity related historically and doctrinally to the broader phenomenon of transnational Sunni “jihadism”? What is the exact nature of the ISO? How, if at all, does ISO differ in strategically relevant ways from AQO? What doctrinal differences essentially define these entities? How does each understand and operationalize strategy? What critical requirements and vulnerabilities characterize each entity? Finally, what implications, recommendations, and proposals are advanced that are of particular interest to USG strategists and professional military educators?<br>https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1127/thumbnail.jpg

Pitchford, Anita. "Historic Sites in Texas: the Use of Local History in Texas Public Schools." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1989. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331623/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research study examined the perceptions of school administrators and of historic site directors toward the function of the sites in the public school curriculum. In-depth, personal interviews were conducted, tape-recorded, and transcribed at six selected sites, representing the various ethnic historic settlements of Texas, a variety of population densities, each of the major physical geographic regions, and different economic levels in the state. Data analysis involved careful study of the taped interviews, comparisons of responses given by people of similar roles, and comparisons of responses regarding the same site. Documentation of elements of the historic sites, of programs offered, of participation of the local school district in programs, and of written school policies were examined. The perceptions of the interviewees along with recommendations for changes were noted. Responses varied from expressed impression of students who are steeped in local history and are bored with their heritage, to enthusiastic positive opinions that the prosperity of the community is directly related to the strong identification of the citizens with its local history. The role of local history and of specific sites in the curriculum of the public schools is not consistent in Texas. This research study suggests that positive gains are possible if communication between local historic site/park/museum personnel and professional educators who are responsible for planning and implementation of school curriculum can be improved. Professional educators tend either to value local history and historic sites as part of the curriculum, or to avoid the question of meeting state mandates for classtime through the use of off-campus visits to historic sites by interpreting recent reforms to prohibit them. Professional personnel who oversee the historic sites tend to offer programs to the public schools that will meet the mandated curriculum, while adhering to the scheduling constraints of school reform legislation.

Armstrong, Samantha-Jo. "The Book of Kindness : Social Reformers Use of Kindness: 1760-1800." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Historiska institutionen, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-322960.

Full text
Abstract:
In the English socio-cultural landscape of the late eighteenth-century, the concept of kindness inhabited a place of importance for its proponents. For kindness was regarded as actions derived from the capacity of humans to do good. Which resulted in the experience and creation of good qualities, situations, and interactions. Kindness’ dictates allowed for its followers to argue the need to encourage better behavioural qualities in others. The dictates of kindness that allowed for this regulating ability came around due to the tightly entwined religious and social tenets of kindness. In the religious sphere, kindness was tied to being Christian through the ‘Law of Kindness.’ The ‘Law of Kindness’ argued that Christians must show kindness to every human being and creature despite everything. Christian theologians argued that kindness is part of humanity, which must be shown through the correct actions, mannerisms, and feelings of everyday life. Kindness fit neatly into the culture of sensibility and its associated philosophies of moral and sensibilities. In the social sphere proponents argued that kindness acted as a means of reinforcing social hierarchy and behavioural boundaries of English society. This occurred through dictates to people showing kindness and infuse kindness into their behaviour that varied according to social position and gender.

Abstract:
The aim for this study was to see the epoch antiquity’s part in the course History 1a1 in the textbooks, the regulatory documents, and the active history teachers in the municipality of Umeå. The method that has been used is hermeneutic method in cooperation with use of history. The study relay on the theory of history culture made by Klas-Göran Karlsson, but also on the theory of history consciousness. The study’s conclusion is that the epoch antiquity should take a small part of the course History 1a1, but that there is space for the teachers who want to give it more time. The books show the same results when some of them have a small part aimed for the antiquity and some of them have a few more pages. The teacher’s opinions show the same pattern when the majority thinks that the course should have a small part of the course, while others think it should have a bigger part. The result of what content the antiquity should have got a similar response in the three parts of the study. Governance and culture are the two themes that is said to be the most important part of the epoch’s content, the teachers agree but also think that historical consciousness is a matter of importance. The historical consciousness is also a big part of the regulatory documents and can be seen in the textbooks as well. The regulatory documents find the knowledge of source criticism and use of history to be of importance, but none of them appears in the textbook’s chapter of antiquity nor in the opinions of the teachers.

Smith, Poppy Eleanor Win. "History and use of the claviorgan." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8865.

Full text
Abstract:
The claviorgan is an instrument that has long been neglected by Organologists, and considered a mere oddity in the history of stringed-keyboard instruments. However, the combination of strings and pipes in a single entity permeates musical history from the late-1400s through to present day in a variety of guises. The thesis will present a new nomenclature using the term claviorgan as an ‘umbrella term’ under which a variety of different combinations of stringed-keyboard and pipes will be considered and defined: this recognises that there are distinct trends in instrument building, and different probable uses for the various claviorgans. Through a series of case-studies of building-schools and epochs, the thesis will consider both the written evidence for combination instruments from published musical theory books and from other documentary evidence, as well as the evidence from the surviving instruments. It is not the intention to provide detailed organological studies of surviving instruments, as there are not enough examples from many of the building schools to make a reasonable comparison. However, these instruments will be considered in terms of their status, their owners, and in particular the balance between the elements. Little or no music has survived that was written specifically to exploit claviorgans, and the thesis examines the possible reasons for this lack of music in light of keyboard repertoire in general, and the lack of distinction between music for harpsichord and organ in the greater part of music history. The thesis also discusses the concept of solo music versus accompaniment and continuo, with a particular focus on the claviorgan as an instrument for ensemble performance as evidenced by contemporary descriptions of their use and by the status the instruments held. This discussion will be followed and complemented by an appendix of surviving instruments and references to combination instruments compiled by the author.

Rheeder, Willem Lodewikus. "History outside the classroom : the use of museums in the teaching of history." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/6584.

Full text
Abstract:
In the modern technical age in which we live , knowledge of the past is often pushed into the background As a result of this history teaching often becomes an attempt to pump an assortment of arbitrary facts into the minds of scholars by means of 'chalk and talk' methods. Educationists all over the world see this tendency as the major reason for the declining popularity of history as a school subject . In other parts of the world, such as the United States of America and Britain, education departments and teachers have faced this challenge and it seems as if the status of history as a school subject has been retrieved . In the Republic of South Africa the new core syllabuses are geared towards moving away from the earlier restricted emphasis of facts, but there is very little guidance on how teachers are to implement this 'new' approach, which focus more on the "how" of history and on the teaching of historical skills In this thesis museum visits as one of the modes of outdoor education, is studied as a possible additional alternative method of teaching history in South African schools . A study is made of what museums are and of the possible educational values of museum visits. It soon becomes clear that the major beneficial aspect of museum visits could be the acquisition of historical skills such as comprehension, application , analysis , synthesis and evaluation In order to gain insight into the practical implementation of museum visits several groups were observed while visiting the museum, after which two pilot studies were undertaken in the Kaffrarian and South African Missionary Museums with Black standard ten pupils and senior student teachers . Attention is given to aspects of administrative , teacher and pupil preparation the implementation of the visit and the types of follow-up work which could be used. During and after the implementation of the two pilot studies certain characteristic problems were experienced these are : the compilation of worksheets and cultural differences . The most important of language difficulties : It also became clear that education officers at museums find it difficult to cope with the special educational needs of the different visiting groups . For this reason an approach is advocated where the teacher compiles his own worksheet suited to the needs of his specific pupils Guidelines are given as to how pre-planned worksheets could be adapted : how different question-types could be used to compile a worksheet in which skills ascend from the simple to the complex: and how worksheets could be compiled for mixed ability groups. It is hoped that this thesis will lead to renewed interest in the use of the museum in the teaching of history and will serve as guideline for teachers planning to take history "out of its coffin".

Abstract:

Whitston, Kevin. "Scientific management practice in Britain : a history." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1995. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3981/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study traces the influence of scientific management on the development of modem management methods in Britain from the end of the 19th century to the outbreak of the second world war. It is concerned with both the organisation of work and the management of the worker, with employers' labour strategies and worker and trade union responses. The Introduction discusses key concepts like Taylorism, Fordism and mass production; chapter one identifies technical and managerial changes taking place at the turn of the century and the reception Taylorism received in Britain; chapter 2 is mainly concerned with premium bonus schemes and the impact of the first world war; chapter 3 analyses the growth of new management functions and roles, particularly production engineering between the wars; chapter 4 discusses the impact of mechanisation and deskilling on workers in the engineering industry; chapter 5 traces the growth of piecework schemes and time study, the significance of the Bedaux system, and the impact of worker resistance. A postscript and a conclusion relate these themes to the post second world war history of work study and to contemporary debates about flexible specialisation and post-Fordism. Three key issues are addressed the meaning of scientific management, the extent to which employers adopted scientific management practices, its impact on workers and the effect of worker resistance. It is argued that, if scientific management is located historically, it is seen to be concerned with the management of production as well as the management of the worker; with production engineering, progress and planning departments, as well as time and motion study and incentive payment schemes. As such it is not reducible to any particular form of Taylorist practice. Employers were slow to develop the new management methods. Slow adaptation to change was part of the more general problem of relative economic decline. But both were uneven. British employers were reluctant to abandon tools and techniques which still made money but some did, and more followed. Taylorism was more positively received in Britain than has been suggested and was widely accepted by the end of the first world war. Its impact on managerial practice can be traced in the inter-war period in the development of production engineering and more rigorous payment systems, including those inspired by Bedaux. A 'deskilling dynamic', centred on a new split between mental and manual labour, was fatally undermining both craftsman and foreman in the engineering industry, though it owed more to the jig and tool designer, and more broadly, the management of mechanisation than the efficiency engineer. But changes in the labour process also affected women and semi and unskilled men and they were centrally involved in shop floor resistance to 'speed-up'. Resistance modified but could not prevent the restructuring of the labour process consequent upon scientific management.

Abstract:
<p>This essay is about local history in history teaching in two cities; Kalmar and Vetlanda. The purpose was to see how teachers in Kalmar and Vetlanda define local history and what kind of local history they teach their students. I have also examined what benefits of didactics the teachers see in teaching local history. In order to find out I interviewed four history teachers at three schools in Kalmar and two history teachers at one school in Vetlanda. Some of the interviews were carried out over the telephone and the rest at the teachers´s schools. The teachers all work in upper secondary schools.</p><p>What I found was that all the teachers had more or less the same definition of the term local history; it´s about the history in one area. This area could be where their students come from or the area where the school is located. Some teachers taught more local history than others. The teachers taught some different types of local history, for example: city guiding, literature studying, subject days, essays, to search material in archives and source material etc. All the teachers said that some benefits of didactics, when it comes to teach local history, were that it could give the students some more knowledge about their hometown and its surroundings. The students know much about their hometown, but not all the background. The closeness was also an advantage; the local history is just outside the door. Hopefully it could lead to a bigger interest when it comes to history.</p>

Abstract:
This study examines the scholarship of J. A. Rogers and Rogers' use of vindicationist African-American history as a tool to illustrate his own ideas about humanism. Rogers' use of One-Drop ideology, Great Man history, and the philosophy of the bran of history combined into a subtle tool for undermining the entrenched racial attitudes of white supremacy during the twentieth century. This study was based on the premise that Rogers' use of vindicationism as a tool for humanism made his particular brand of vindicationist history relevant to Africana history. A historiographic critical approach to vindicationist history is used in order to determine what relevancy vindicationism has to Africana history and to what extent Rogers' humanism infused subtle arguments, contributed to Rogers' relevancy to Africana history. An examination of the goals and methodologies of other vindicationist scholars was utilized to find points of similarity and difference with Rogers' scholarship. This contrast of Rogers with other vindicationists allowed the salient points of Rogers' relevancy to be distilled. The conclusions of this study suggest that Rogers' relevancy is in his contribution to Humanism. Rogers attempts to demystify and debunk the idea of race and the history of racial intermixing, along with his championing the idea of the unity of humanity are more relevant than his vindicationist history. Additionally this study shows that both the critics of Rogers and those vindicationist historians who have followed in his footsteps have missed the subtlety in his writing. Both have viewed Rogers merely as a vindicationist. Whereas vindicationism' s tableau of black heroes is a reactionary response to Eurocentric history, Rogers' use of One-Drop ideology to debunk the idea of race was revolutionary.

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis in history consists of a case study of Per Olov Enquist’s documentary novel Legionärerna, which examines the Swedish extradition of Baltic soldiers after the Second World War. The intent of the study is to survey the novel’s use of history from a literary dimension. It does so by applying the typology of Hayden White, his poetics of history. This conceptual framework historicizes the historical writing by clarifying how the historical dictum is constructed in similar manner as fiction, and therefore dependent of its’ author. The result shows that Enquist uses the history – is constructing it – to object how one earlier has talked about the extradition by satire previous accounts and by reasoning contextual how one, instead, should understand the same historical phenomenon. These two aspects are linked to a third, viz, Enquist’s Maoist political stance.

By establishing an analysis that tries to reconcile the basis under which the creation of the concept in 1944, as well as its reception, take and dispute of what the concept must (have) mean(t) between 1944 and December 1948, when the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was approved by the United Nations General Assembly, this work aims for an understanding of a few of the political and social limits on the employment of the term Genocide. More than just considering the politicisation (Politisierung), it is argued that a certain understanding of what Genocide is or ought to be, be it through the proposed temporal frame or through the debates that follow in the Field of Genocide Studies, requires an approach that reflects on the multiple temporalities that each claim for a certain meaning that is brought within the Concept.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston University<br>The School of Education and the Department of Physics at Boston University offer a sequence of 10 two-credit professional development courses through the Improving the Teaching of Physics (ITOP) project. The ITOP courses combine physics content, readings from the physics education research (PER) literature, and the conceptual history of physics (CHOP). ITOP participants self-report changes to their teaching practices as a result of their participation in ITOP. The purpose of this study was to verify and characterize those changes in the specific area of the participants' use of history after their study of CHOP. Ten recent ITOP participants were observed, interviewed, and asked to provide lesson plans and samples of student work from their classes. Case studies of each participant's teaching were constructed from the data. The individual cases were synthesized to characterize the impact of CHOP on the ITOP participants. The results show that the participants integrate CHOP into their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) to inform their understanding of: (1) the relationship between physics and other disciplines, (2) the relationship between specific physics concepts, (3) student understanding of physics concepts, (4) student difficulties in learning physics concepts, and (5) methods for teaching physics concepts. The participants use history to teach a variety of topics, although the most common were mechanics and electromagnetism. All of the participants used history to teach aspects of the nature of science (NOS) and to increase student interest in physics, while eight participants taught physics concepts through history. The predominant mode of incorporating history was through adding anecdotes about the scientists who worked on the concepts, but seven participants had their students study the historical development of physical concepts. All the participants discussed a lack of time as a factor that inhibits a greater use of history in their courses. Eight participants discussed a lack of appropriate resources for using history in high school physics classes. Two participants said they did not feel that explicit study ofthe history of physics would benefit their students until they had better mastery of physics concepts.

Abstract:
This study seeks to analyze the japanese role-playing video game Valkyria Chronicles. Since the game uses a fictionalized european scene of World War 2 as its setting, it is an interesting object for analysis. The work is done through using the theoretical framework of the use of history as developed by Peter Aronsson among others and Occidentalism, or the representation of the west. The study shows that while the context in which the game’s events occurs in is fictional, the events are heavily influenced by WW2 and fits into categories of history use such as monumental use and furthermore is employed in a way which works in a way to relate the events to a japanese audience by the frequent and heavy use of moral appeal. The occidental tendencies are found in the disdain for metropolitan culture the game displays, and the favoring of the rural milieu

Abstract:
Rehabilitation of sturgeon populations requires an understanding of sturgeon autecology during all life stages, especially during early life when high mortality occurs. To begin to understand sturgeon early-life history I determined river of origin on a multi-basin scale (i.e., potential rivers of origin). I then determined habitat needs and early life demographics on a more localized scale (i.e., specific river). Trace elements differ between river reaches of the central US and may be used to determine origin of age-0 sturgeon. My trace element analyses suggested that age-0 sturgeon captured in the Middle Mississippi River, which extends from the confluence of the Missouri River downstream to the confluence of the Ohio River, drifted from as far upstream as the Gavins Point Dam on the Missouri River (> 1200 km), while other individuals originated locally in the Middle Mississippi River. On a more refined scale of habitats, I used trawling to identify habitat features used. Age-0 Scaphirhynchus sturgeon catch rates were highest around artificial structures (i.e., wing dikes) and island areas while main channel habitat comprised the lowest catch rates. Within these habitats, young sturgeon frequently occupied low velocities (i.e., ~0.1), moderate depths (i.e., 2 to 5 m), and sand substrate. Although determination of river of origin and specific habitats used are imperative for restoration, sturgeon populations are likely regulated by factors within habitats that affect early-life dynamics. Mean sturgeon growth rates ranged from 1.42-1.50 mm/d over the four years but did not differ among years. Individuals hatched over a 25 to 50-d period and peak hatch dates were between 10- 20 May during all years. Hatching coincided with optimum spawning temperatures of 17-20oC and a rise in river stage. Abundance was positively related to river stage, with longer durations of high water related increasing abundance. Mortality of age-0 sturgeon increased with the number of days where water temperature exceeded 28 oC. In the end this study has set benchmarks for understanding factors affecting the early-life ecology of Scaphirhynchus sturgeon.

Abstract:
To own the Holocaust  The aim of this study has been to summarise and analyse the use of history in the debate surrounding the building of a swedish Holocaust memorial museum. Material used in the study included consultations of SOU 2020:21 from various authorities/agencies and NGO´s, editorials and debate articles from Sweden's leading newspapers and motions and written questions written by members of the swedish parliament. The methods used were textual analysis and hermeneutics. The material was analyzed via Karlsson's typology of use of history.   The study shows that the memory of the Holocaust is being used in different ways depending on the users geografical, political, organizational and/or etnical backgrounds. This affects the concept of the Holocaoust and its moral implication in various ways. Organizations representing the romani community, for example, wants the roma to be included in the Holocaust-concept and the illuminates the historical crualties that the roma´s have endured in order to further that argument. Organizations and political parties emphasize their connections to the Holocaust in order to discredit opponents or to further political or economical/social agendas. The result of this use is a variance in the existential, moral and political implications of the Holocaust.  Another result, which in no way is disconnected from the ones mentioned earlier, is a variance in the ways in which the history of Sweden is linked to that of the Holocaust. The use varies according to where the debater wants to place the museum, a choice which is strongly linked to the author's geographical background. This results in different universalistic implications of the holocausts causes, proceedings and effects.

Wheeler, John Smith. "No Popery : John Cormack and the use of history." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/27647.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis sets out to show that the appearance and performance of John Cormack and the Protestant Action Society (PAS) in Edinburgh in the 1930s was not an aberration but a phase in the development of the national psyche. From its creation by Cormack in 1933 the Society made an extraordinary impact on Edinburgh municipal politics, winning nearly one third of the votes cast at the 1936 election and yet just a year later it was fading away. The movement had its roots in the history of Scotland, particularly since the reformation of religion in 1560, in which the seventeenth century struggle to maintain the Presbyterian form of the reformed religion is an important influence. This history, in its traditional form more oral and folkloric than academic, with that of the immigration of Irish Roman Catholics in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, is seen as an essential element in the formation of the mindset of people in Edinburgh which made it possible for the PAS to have the success it had, albeit very temporary. It was used to legitimise and justify the Society's anti-Roman Catholic political campaign that was given a degree of respectability by the actions in the 1920s of Presbyterian churches, led by the Church of Scotland, in pressing for a curb on immigration from the Irish Free State, actions that were essentially anti-Roman Catholic. A more immediate factor in the rise of the party was the economic and social condition of the working people in the city. Unemployment had been a problem in the 1920s. It rose to unbearable levels in the early 1930s. Poor housing was a serious problem and several wards were designated slum clearance areas. Another influence was the perceived aggression of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland generally but particularly in Edinburgh where a new Archbishop appointed in 1929 was thought by some to be unduly assertive in promoting his faith in this most Presbyterian city. A traditional view of history in which the Church of Rome posed an enduring threat to the nation was a prime propaganda tool of the PAS and considerable space is given to setting out this version of the nation's past in order to place the PAS in its historic context. An appreciation of the indigenous population's view of the more recent conflicts resulting from Irish immigration is also necessary to an understanding of the PAS appeal. The mobilisation of this version of history, taken together with the harsh economic and social conditions in which many people lived at the time, provided the elements for which John Cormack was the catalyst to enliven Edinburgh's municipal politics in the 1930s. With the return of more prosperous times and perhaps time to reflect on the basics of PAS policy the party lost its support as quickly as it had been gained. The advent and experience of the 1939-45 war with the homogenising effect of facing a common enemy and the decline of religion as a social and political force in the second half of the twentieth century renders it unlikely that there could be a return of sectarian strife in which No Popery' could be an effective slogan.

Horlyck, Charlotte. "Mirrors in Koryŏ society : their history, use and meanings." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2005. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28949/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Koryŏ dynasty (AD 918-1392) witnessed an unprecedented rise in the production of bronze mirrors that were cast in a large variety of shapes, sizes and motifs. This thesis explores the history, use and meanings of Koryŏ mirrors and challenges preconceived interpretations viewing them as one-dimensional everyday objects whose mundane existence persisted irrespective of context. Through a detailed study of the surviving evidence, a complex picture emerges and mirrors are proven to be meaningful commodities that operate within unique social, political and religious settings. These conditions govern their production and consumption and determine their stylistic attributes and uses. The body of material examined consists of archaeologically recovered mirrors from tombs and pagodas and unprovenanced examples in museum collections. The former undergo a rigorous structuralist analysis within their known framework of use, whereas the latter expand and enrich the sample. Pre-Koryŏ examples are also brought into the discussion in the belief that earlier traditions informed the ways in which Koryŏ mirrors functioned. Stylistic comparisons are made with foreign examples and the few available written sources provide further insights into the use of mirrors in Koryŏ. In this way, the multiple functions and meanings of Koryŏ mirrors are brought to light and interpreted. As secular commodities, mirrors performed both ordinary and complex roles as grooming utensils, diplomatic and trade items, luxury artefacts and collectibles of aesthetic and antiquarian value. Their production was controlled by the government and the best specimens, apparently restricted to the aristocracy, came to manifest high social status, a quality that members of local elites sought to emulate through the consumption of similar items. As ritual objects, mirrors were associated with status and auspiciousness and assumed apotropaic qualities; they also embodied key concepts within the Buddhist teaching. For these reasons, they were used as burial goods and were also included alongside relics within pagodas. Their secular and ritual roles were thus interwoven and the one did not preclude the other.

Obritz, Joseph Steven. "The use and abuse of architecture: history, elements, and conditions." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52109.

Full text
Abstract:
Architecture is a way of making that enables man to present his world. This making allows him to find his relationship to architecture and himself. The history of architecture is a part of the history of man and demands our attention if we are to make a contribution to the life of man. Nietzsche states that history is necessary above all to the man of action...who needs examples, teachers, and comforters he cannot find among his contemporaries.¹ “We would serve history only so far as it serves life.”² He also feels that the imitation of the past will only lead to a stagnant and degenerate life. There is a contradiction between these statements concerning imitation. In philosophy imitation has been defined as having two forms positive and negative. Negative imitation would be making an image of an original that reveals all that is immanent in the original. The act is redundant and therefore unnecessary. Positive imitation involves an understanding of things or ideas inherent in the original and lets us present our understanding which may expand beyond the original or lead to a new shift in the original paradigm. We must observe the history of man’s making and gather things that inform us about the world of architecture. History becomes a tool to facilitate architecture. We gather that which for us carries some essential meaning.³ This meaning may be manifested in our understanding of types, elements, or conditions of a particular culture as well as a personal desire to understand them in relationship to ourselves. For example, the elements and conditions that compose the house in some African tribes are considered as metaphors to parts of the human body i.e. door as mouth, window as eye, etcetera. When a family member loses a body part the corresponding element is removed or altered. Throughout history typologies have contained the models and archetypes of man’s ideas and ways of thinking, which are revealed through making. These remain with us and contain elements and conditions that change depending upon our focus. In the scale of the city there exists other types such as houses, churches, and libraries that become elemental when discussing the city as a whole. The conditions occur when analyzing the relationship of the elements with each other and the results that their organization produce. If we translate the scale to building types the wall, column, and stair become the elements and conditions become the mediation between these elements. Desire urges memory and imagination in our making of a re-presentation of that desire and a transformation of our observation. Imagination transforms our observation of what we find essential in history. We understand our relationship to things when we make them and through the revealing of things we come to understand ourselves. Memory recalls things or events that carry some meaning to us, but it also contains the more complete knowledge of things that we may come to know through making. Art is the imaginative appropriation of the essential strivings of historical man.⁴ The actuation of the idea is through the made object. We do this by painting, drawing, sculpture, and poetry. The object is two fold. It contains within it the idea of the reality of the thing and the drawing itself as a thing. An idea of a thing contains some elements common to all the other realities of the thing which makes them thinkable.⁵ When we speak of these things we bring to them some of its history that is known to us. Making allows us to re-present a thing which best actuates our idea and understanding of the thing, and enables us to redefine our world. 1 Nietzche, Friedrich Use and Abuse of History, The p. 12 2 Ibid., p. 3 3 Desmond, William Art and the Absolute: A Study of Hegel’s Aesthetics p. 61 4 Ibid., p. 61 5 Aristotle On the Soul. bk. 1, ch. 4<br>Master of Architecture

Abstract:
This study examined validity of the Life History Calendar by comparing retrospective and prospective reports of adolescent substance use. Agreement was calculated using kappa and phi coefficients for dichotomous variables, and Bivariate correlations for average substance use. Effects of potential personality, psychopathology, and demographic moderators on agreement were assessed through hierarchical regression analyses and curvilinear relations determined. Results reflected moderate agreement between retrospective and prospective reports of substance use, moderated by personality and psychopathology variables, particularly Agreeableness, symptoms of antisocial personality disorder, and symptoms of substance abuse. Agreement between retrospective and prospective reports was adequate for reports of alcohol and marijuana use for at least six years after initial reports of use. Agreement for cigarette reports was adequate a year after initial reporting.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study looks at the dynamics whereby organisational knowledge comes into existence and is eventually crystallised into stable structures of signification through processes of utilisation and institutionalisation. Recent years have seen an astounding explosion of writing about organisational knowledge. In different versions, organisational theorists have been paying increasing attention to the idea of the firm as a body of knowledge, stressing in turn the ability of firms to create, manage and transfer knowledge as a critical success factor. However, the current debate on the topic has highlighted the difficulty of documenting empirically the process of creation, accumulation and maintenance of knowledge in organisations. This, of course, begs the question: how is it possible to relate an empirical study to the theoretical debate on knowledge in organisations? More specifically, how does a particular knowledge system emerge and become stabilised? How does it evolve over time? In this study, we argue that the lack of attention to knowledge as an empirical phenomenon can be traced back to the assumptions underlying the mainstream knowledge-based theories of the firm, which emphasise the instrumental, functional character of knowledge in organisations. In contrast to the functionalist view of knowledge, we contend that mainstream assumptions need to be combined with those perspectives focusing on the social construction of knowledge and highlighting its contentious, provisional nature. Given the problems identified at both theoretical and methodological levels, the present study proposes a framework for studying knowledge as an empirical phenomenon based on three methodological lenses, which are echoed in the title of this work: history, breakdowns and narratives. The three lenses have to be seen as bringing into focus the tacit features of knowledge and organisation. The empirical core of the research is evidenced by three in-depth case studies conducted at Fiat Auto Italy. The findings of the study provide the backbone for constructing a theoretical model of knowledge in organisations. The model links the content, process, and context of knowledge-related phenomena in a coherent classificatory system. More generally, the empirical research highlights the systemic, institutionalised, and multi-faceted nature of knowledge in organisations.

Abstract:
Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) use increases risk of nicotine addiction, impairs brain development, and exposes users to harmful chemicals. Despite these risks, rates of use have been increasing among college student populations. Moreover, family history of addiction (FHA) is a risk factor for substance use disorders. Research has yet to examine the extent FHA has on the risk of ENDS use. The current research examines the effect of FHA on lifetime ENDS use and whether ENDS use is more common in participants with FHA and current alcohol or drug use. Participants (N=2,174) were undergraduates recruited from eight southern universities. Participants were 18 to 24 (Mage=19.25). The sample was 73% female, with the following racial identifications: Caucasian (74.9%), followed by Black/African American (8.8%), Asian (6.7%), multiracial (4.7%), other (3.7%), Middle Eastern (.8%), and American Indian/Alaska Native (.3%). Lifetime ENDS use was measured using the Cigarette and E-Cigarette Use Questionnaire. FHA was measured by participant report of first-degree relatives with a drug or alcohol addiction history. Participant alcohol and drug use were measured via the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test and Drug Use Disorders Identification Test. Fifty-five percent of participants had used ENDS products during their lifetime (Mage of first use=13.16, SD=4.63), and 12.5% of the sample reported FHA. A linear regression examined if FHA corresponded with ENDS use. The results were significant, F(1,2158)=10.37, p=.001, R2=.005. FHA significantly predicted ENDS use, β=-0.069, t(2158)=-3.22, p=.001. A chi-square of independence examined the relation between ENDS use and alcohol intake in individuals who disclosed FHA. A significant relation was found, χ2=(1,N=176)=32.20, pχ2=(1,N=176)=9.49, p=.002, with participants who reported no drug use being more likely to engage in ENDS use (86%), compared to those who did report drug use (14%). The present study’s results documented there was a significant negative relation between FHA and ENDS use, such that participants who reported FHA presented decreased ENDS use. These findings are contrary to the literature that documents increased cigarette use among young adults with FHA. In addition, participants who disclosed FHA and current alcohol intake exhibited increased ENDS use. However, the participants who disclosed FHA and current drug use exhibited decreased ENDS use. Our results suggest that future research should examine the extent at which individuals who engage in drug use focus more on their substance of choice rather than ENDS products, as well as investigate other risk behaviors that could impact lifetime ENDS use among this population.

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to analyze the portrayal of the Romani people in 23 history textbooks marketed towards the Swedish lower secondary school between the years 1964–2014, but also which uses of history emerge from within these descriptions. During this period, the curriculum has passed through five different stages with varying approaches towards ethnic minorities. The method used to compare different textbooks, passages and time-periods was a qualitative and comparative content analysis based on a model by Professor Lennart Hellspong. This was supported by a theoretical framework focused around the typologies of uses of history by Professor Klas-Göran Karlsson. The findings show that Romani people are portrayed in similar themes or contexts over different curriculum-stages and many of the written passages focuses on the victimization and mistreatment of Romani by either Swedish or international actors. A comprehensive account of an objective and cultural history is only found in a few of the most current textbooks. The Romani and their history are often overlooked in favor of the majority society’s historical narrative if not a specific duty is charged towards their inclusion in the schools control documents. In the year 2000 the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities was ratified by the Swedish government and the subsequent revision of the curriculum made this inclusion a permanent fixture. However, some textbooks keep minority history brief and unsatisfying. The uses of history regarding Romani people vary over time and appear to be subject to the overarching sociopolitical landscape. An excluding and existential nationalistic narrative is identified to be common during the 1960’s but transforms towards a more including variety over time. Non-use and political-pedagogical use are both partial in varying degrees during all the curriculum-periods coupled with a perceived scientific presentation of historical facts, but not scientific use of history. The current curriculum introduces a widely moral and conciliatory use of history. This study confirms earlier research to an extent, but at the same time it extends to focus on the Romani people, a wider variety of books and a longer time-period compared with earlier studies on the subject. The findings open the possibility for future research on other Swedish or international minorities – or the Romani from other methodological or theoretical standpoints.

Abstract:
Piracy has a big mysterious stamp. In the west, we have a clear picture of the 17th and 18th century pirates through stories about prostheses, planks, parrots and eyepatches. These stories come from one source, Captain Charles Johnson's legendary work that addresses a large number of pirates and their lives on the seven seas. This study investigates how modern historians relate critically to Captain Charles Johnson's work and how they interpret his stories about the fictional pirate utopia, Libertalia. What are their purposes and what have they been affected by? By applying a social-constructive theory, the purpose of course becomes evident by seeing what truths these historians created and carried on and how Charles Johnson's work was used in history. Through a social constructive study influenced by source criticism of the works of Marcus Rediker, David Cordingly and Philip Gosse, their interpretations have been perceived as very different. The different historians seem to have their own personal agendas and perceptions and have through their expertise created perceptions and stories that may characterize future generations' perception of the golden age of the piracy and, in particular, their image of Libertalia as a fair society without rulers.   The researchers' source-critical approach varies from seeing Johnson's work as narrative stories for future generations to the fact that Johnson primarily had a profit interest in the authorship. These ideas, however, are something that the historians themselves have concluded and thus become part of the social construction we call reality, in which we exist.
