Abstract:
FTTH (Fibre to the Home) uses a fusion splice field-assembled optical connector. The fusion splice field-assembled optical connector is connected and assembled using a generic fibre fusion splicer. However, general purpose fusion splicers make the device difficult to operate in the installation field because the fusion splicer is too large and heavy to handle. As a result, the fibre optic splice often breaks during the optical connector assembly process. This makes it difficult to apply fusion-spliced optical connectors in the FTTH field. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a fusion splicer for FTTH that can perform fusion splicing using a wing-type sleeve optical connector. The proposed fusion splicer, with a connection module with a lifting/lowering function, is implemented to connect and protect the wing-type sleeve field-assembled optical connector. In addition, by eliminating the tube heater used as a connection protection method in the existing fusion splicer, the power module is reduced. The developed fusion splicer was evaluated for assembly reliability through splice loss measurements and a comparison of assembling time with the existing fusion splicer.

Abstract:
The paper examines Peter Carey’s first book about Indigenous Australians, a topic which he had neglected for decades. Until A Long Way from Home (2017) was written, the two-time Booker Prize winner renowned for portraying Australian identity had yet to confront this crucial matter which he believed was a fundamental issue of the country. Reasons behind this seemingly contradictory and lengthy absence are highlighted along with certain methods with which the author gradually exposes Australia’s shameful past in the treatment of First Nations people. Carey’s approach stays true to his body of work, namely the Aboriginal subject is complemented or intertwined with his portrayal of another layer of Australia’s history: the pan-European heritage of non-Indigenous Australians. But why and in what manner does he integrate European topics into a novel aiming to shed light on the maltreatment and neglect of First Nations Australians? Does this addition not dilute the original aim of paying homage to Indigenous Australia? My paper argues that Carey successfully utilises certain European identity themes to help show the gravity of sins committed against Australian Indigenous people. The author’s modus operandi is to piece together seemingly neglected fragments of the European legacy with First Nations Australia to reveal a unified entity. Via Willie Bachhuber, a character who most Australians can connect or identify with, Carey joins together various Australian identities which may not have been connected beforehand. With this technique Carey helps ensure the novel is about and for all Australians. I believe that A Long Way from Home crowns Peter Carey’s career as fully depicting Australianness without including Aboriginal people has up until now meant a quite incomplete oeuvre. An ultimate Australian character so-far elusive to Carey, a Homo Australiensis has come to life via a pseudo-German-Balt-Hungarian-Australian, who is actually a First Nations Australian with a white biological father.

Abstract:
In the course of performing fire investigations, it is not uncommon to encounter a fire where the ignition source is identified as electrical in nature. Furthermore, we have all likely encountered a situation where the fire occurred as a result of the neutral circuit being energized (short circuited to line potential). This article will share what occurred during one particular instance where a home owner witnessed and photographed an energized neutral event. Fortunately, a fire did not occur, but easily could have. The home owner photographed the gas appliance connector connected to a water heater that was glowing red hot during the event. It is the intent of this article to share the particulars of this case and explore the effects of an energized neutral circuit as it relates to current flow in a gas appliance connector. The energized neutral circuit was witnessed and documented by the home owner. The glowing gas appliance connector was a real event, not theoretical or staged. The glowing gas appliance connector did not result in a fire; however, it did raise questions regarding the current carrying capability of the gas appliance connector and what level of surface temperatures resulted from the current flow through the short section of gas line. The energized gas appliance connector was duplicated in the lab. The external surface temperature of the gas appliance connector was measured at various current levels and documented.

Abstract:
Internet of things (IoT) is a concept where all devices get connected to the internet to exchange information. IoT can be utilized in order to make a home environment interactive and smart. The required connectivity can be provided by either making all the devices Wi-Fi capable, which is costly, or by setting a local wireless sensor network (WSN) which later connects to internet. In this work various devices and sensors are designed and connected in a wireless sensor network within a home environment which generates a sensor dependent data packet. These data packets are then sent to the cloud through a master node. The master sends the data using a proposed priority scheme so that the critical information can be sent early. Simulations were performed to show that under the proposed scheme the loss of critical sensors information is reduced by around 75%.

Full text
Abstract:
In the context of the Internet of Things, the design of connected services - that is, services supported by connected objects - requires an end-to-end approach to not only meet the expectations of the recipients of these services but also to adapt the operation of these services to a wide range of execution conditions spreading from smart homes to smart cities. The semantic approach proposed in this thesis provides a level of abstraction that allows service designers to focus on the functional aspects of services and objects. It is part of a larger architecture framework that addresses, in addition to this semantic level, the more operational aspects of implementation of these services (Artifacts level) in potentially heterogeneous technical environments (Resources level). By proposing this semantic design approach, the thesis aims at achieving several objectives that can be grouped into three categories. The first category of objectives is to decompartmentalize the current world of connected services by decoupling services from connected objects and allowing the sharing of objects by several connected services. The openness induced by these first objectives leads to a second category of objectives that relates to the composition of connected services. Each service will have to be aware and adopt a behavior compatible with the other elements of its execution context. These contextual elements include of course the other services but also the physical phenomena and the actions of the occupants of the spaces concerned. Finally, the third category of objectives focusses on at the recipients of connected services in order to optimize the user experience through better requirement management and automatisms respectful of human behaviors. The theoretical basis of the semantic approach proposed in this thesis is a meta-model that defines the modeling elements needed to model services, connected objects and service behaviors in a declarative form

Abstract:
It is becoming a problem that the number of people who have loneliness by a physical distance between family members has lately kept increasing. Home is not only about space, but also about where an individual makes memories, feels secured with its familiarity and feels comfortable with his or her family member(s). Individuals, who live alone and feel lonely, have not been getting these senses. The available ways of connection between remote family members are not enough.  The aim of the research is to understand the current condition of the connection between remote family members to map pain points. The purpose is to develop a product that can decrease a sense of loneliness and increase positive emotions through an experience which makes a lonely individual feel a little bit more connected to a long-distance family in everyday life.  Based on the in-depth interviews, eight insights and two kinds of stakeholders, whom the connection should be made between, was revealed. Over forty ideas were created to solve the problem of loneliness based on the defined insights and stakeholders, and the ideas were narrowed down on the criteria of to what extent the idea can satisfy the revealed insights and to what extent the connection created by each idea can last easily between the two stakeholders.  The resulting product called One Home Lamp can provide an emotionally warmer experience to a target user than other similar products do with four main features: 1) a connection which lasts in everyday life in a way that everyone can keep in touch with each other more easily, 2) a better sense of identity which belongs to each family by customization with colour and stickers, 3) a better sense of belongingness towards a family by seeing an imaginal house where you and your family live together, 4) a better sense of touch which is closer to human warmth with the material and soft texture used.  The result is beneficial for modern societies in terms of the fact that it has a great possibility to reduce loneliness, increase positive emotions and improve well-being among lonely individuals which is one of the sustainable development goals to be achieved by 2030 advocated by the United Nations General Assembly.

Abstract:
L'expérimentation qui a été conduite a permis d’évaluer l’acceptabilité du système proposé<br>Thanks to medical progress and new technologies, life expectancy is growing continuously leading to the emergence of specific needs for elderly. With eighty percent of French willing to keep living at home even with loss of autonomy, offering a remote health monitoring system would allow them to do so in good conditions. In this context, we identified three challenges. The first one concerns health sensors interoperability which is declining because of proprietary protocols largely adopted by manufacturers in their products. To deal with this issue, we propose a middleware that simplifies the communication with the multitude of protocols, proprietary and standard, to improve interoperability with both medical and wellness devices. The second challenge reports to reliability and more particularly to measurement errors due to device handling by the user in absence of clinician. We illustrate this point with a wrist blood pressure monitor and propose a method that guides the user in properly positioning the device thanks to a smartwatch. The last challenge relates to multimodality and more precisely to the measure contextualization. It consists of combining different types of data from a set of sensors in a health monitoring system to ensure that blood pressure is measured in compliance with learned societies recommendations. The experiment we have conducted allows to evaluate the users' acceptability of the proposed solution

Abstract:
Machine-to-machine, machine-to-man, or man-to-machine (M2M) communications is expected to grow very rapidly over the next few years with an anticipated 50 billion devices being connected to broadband connections by 2020 [35]. To be able to plan and dimension for the expected (increase) in data traffic it is important to have a model for the traffic that will flow through the network. A concept often talked about in conjunction with M2M communications is the “Internet of things”, where billions of “smart” objects are connected to the Internet and can be easily shared and used or re-used by many applications. One sub-field of M2M communications is sensor/actuator networks that are installed in households, creating automated homes by enabling home appliances to talk to each other and to applications that can be running on hosts connected to the Internet. Such sensor/actuator networks extend the uses of home appliances into completely new and exciting applications, while also potentially making homes more energy efficient by smarter management and operation of these appliances. The thesis was proposed by and carried out at Ericsson in Kista, Sweden during the summer and fall of 2009. The academic advisor was G. Q. Maguire Jr. of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and industrial advisor was Per Ljungberg at Ericsson. This thesis has an industrial focus, specifically to produce models and prototypes that benefit Ericsson as a company and the Ericsson Connected Home project. This thesis has evaluated the available standards and designed, buildt, and evaluated a prototype application for one of these standards to operate with this home gateway. Additionally, the thesis should also benefit the academic world by offering tractable models for M2M traffic that have a foundation in reality, rather than solutions in search of a problem.<br>Maskin-till-maskin, maskin-till-man, eller man-till-maskin (M2M) kommunikation förväntas växa mycket snabbt under de närmaste åren med förväntade 50 miljarder enheter anslutna till en bredbandsuppkoppling år 2020 [35].

Abstract:
The growth and presence of heterogeneous connected devices inside the home have the potential to provide increased efficiency and quality of life to the residents. Simultaneously, these devices tend to be Internet-connected and continuously monitor, collect, and transmit data about the residents and their daily lifestyle activities. Such data can be of a sensitive nature, such as camera feeds, voice commands, physiological data, and more. This data allows for the implementation of services, personalization support, and benefits offered by smart home technologies. Alas, there has been a rift of security and privacy attacks on connected home devices that compromise the security, safety, and privacy of the occupants. In this thesis, we provide a comprehensive description of the smart connected home ecosystem in terms of its assets, architecture, functionality, and capabilities. Especially, we focus on the data being collected by smart home devices. Such description and organization are necessary as a precursor to perform a rigorous security and privacy analysis of the smart home. Additionally, we seek to identify threat agents, risks, challenges, and propose some mitigation approaches suitable for home environments. Identifying these is core to characterize what is at stake, and to gain insights into what is required to build more robust, resilient, secure, and privacy-preserving smart home systems. Overall, we propose new concepts, models, and methods serving as a foundation for conducting deeper research work in particular linked to smart connected homes. In particular, we propose a taxonomy of devices; classification of data collected by smart connected homes; threat agent model for the smart connected home; and identify challenges, risks, and propose some mitigation approaches.

Abstract:
The current smart home communication can be viewed as protocol stacks interlocked by their proprietary capsule solutions, locking the consumer into a single market of devices, without integration from other manufacturers. This research heads out to discover frameworks to adapt the heterogenous proprietary communicative offerings within the smart home, to a shared communicative interoperable and centralized controlled home, to enable the end-user to adapt the most efficient device for each scenario without having to consider which wireless communicative protocol or having to install more proprietary solutions to adapt additional technologies, thus neglecting centralized control. The research is accomplished by conducting a structured literature review followed by an analysis through thematic coding which provided a broad spectrum of findings regarding different interoperable solutions within several layers of communicative interoperability, within IoT and the smart home. The research results cover frameworks and protocols towards accomplishing wireless interoperability discovered during the structured literature review process, these frameworks and protocols are presented in their respective characteristics, taking communication, interoperability, and smart home adaptation into consideration during analysis. The finalized results present solutions toward an interoperable wireless smart home with good adaptability, along with the main findings a clear redlining can be drawn towards interoperability within IoT, and it is Software Defined Networking (SDN), which revolves around software-based networking. The most applicable interoperable solutions according to the concluding results will provide experienced end-users, consumers, and researchers with a several layered mapping towards how applicable the corresponding solution is towards integrating wireless smart home communication in their smart home scenario.<br>Den nuvarande smarthemskommunikationen kan ses som stackar av protokoll sammankopplade av deras egen proprietär kapsellösning, vilket låser konsumenten till en enda marknad av lösningar, utan integration från andra tillverkare.

Abstract:
Driven by the Internet of Things, devices and appliances will be increasingly connected to each other and the people within the home. In order for the communication to be possible a standard for communication is needed. In many cases there are too many standards, and for other cases there may instead be an absence of standard. This thesis provides a contemporary view of future developments of homes and the current standardization progress. Four domains in homes are investigated: the automated home domain, the sustainable home domain, the healthy home domain and the manufacturing home domain. Trends and technologies are identified that drive a change in homes. Services are described that may be provided in homes. The thesis discusses how services from different domains may be integrated, with a further investigation of the networked manufacturing service and its underlying communication infrastructure. Finally standards are identified and analyzed in regard to the communication infrastructure of the networked manufacturing service. The standardization development is progressing for each home domain. However, potential standard gaps are still present for many of the cross domain device communication. No standard has been identified for integration of services and integration of the business ecosystem in the manufacturing home domain. Similarly there is no standard for the software of 3D printing. New standards or further development of existing standards is needed to realize the networked manufacturing service.

Abstract:
How Jews use media to connect with one another has profound consequences for Jewish identity, community, and culture. This volume explores how the use of media can both create communities and divide them because of how different media shape actions and project anxieties, conflicts, and emotions. Taken together, the chapters consider how Jewish use of media at home and in the street, as well as in the synagogue and in school, affects the individual's sense of ethnic and religious affiliation. They include closely observed case studies, in various national contexts, of the role of popular film, television, records, the Internet, and smartphones, as well as the role of print media, now and historically. They raise fascinating questions about how Jews and Jewish institutions harness, tolerate, or resist media to create their sense of social belonging as Jews within the wider society.

Abstract:
The use of technology to perpetrate domestic abuse, referred to as tech abuse, has become increasingly common. Domestic abuse charity Refuge reported that in 2019, 72% of women accessing its services said that they had been subjected to technology-facilitated abuse. Common devices such as smartphones and tablets can be misused to stalk, harass, impersonate and threaten victims. Some groups have raised concerns that the growing use of internet-connected home devices (such as smart speakers) may provide perpetrators with a wider and more sophisticated range of tools to harm victims. How is technology being used to perpetrate domestic abuse, how can this be prevented and what role can technology play in supporting victims?

Rodríguez-Montemayor, Eduardo. Diaspora Direct Investment Policy: Options for Development. Inter-American Development Bank, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008424.

Abstract:
In today's globalized world, goods and capital are flowing as never before. The movement of people across borders has also enlarged significantly. About 215 million people live away from their home country and many members of such Diasporas are prospering abroad and are eager to extend such success by investing in their homeland. In this paper we explore the impacts of Diaspora Direct Investment (DDI) on international development, i.e. we look at how direct investments from foreign companies connected to Diaspora members (i.e. diaspora-owned firms or firms with diaspora members in the top management) boost productive activities in the home country of such people. One of the main advantages of DDI is that it is more stable than other types of FDI, particularly during unfavorable economic conditions, because of the emotional connections of diaspora members to their country of origin. Moreover, such companies engaging in DDI are often seen as the ¿first movers¿ into a country due to potential advantages they have in terms of knowing the culture and having social networks in the home country. This may act as a catalyst for further investment from other companies by providing market and operational information about the homeland to potential investors. We focus particularly on the experience of Latin America and analyze policy options to design comprehensive diaspora strategies that maximize investments, institutional development and the flow of talent and ideas. Such strategies, which would ideally involve Diaspora members in their formulation, can give Diaspora entrepreneurs support in terms of networking, mentoring and training (e.g. business incubators). Nonetheless, a more mature stage of diaspora engagement would be achieved with the development of venture capital funds as well as other sources of financing (e.g. matching funds). The smart utilization of digital technologies for connecting Diasporas empowers all such policy options.

Abstract:
The first-mile, last-mile problem is a significant deterrent for potential transit riders, especially in suburban neighborhoods with low density. Transit agencies have typically sought to solve this problem by adding parking spaces near transit stations and adding stops to connect riders to fixed-route transit. However, these measures are often only short-term solutions. In the last few years, transit agencies have tested whether new mobility services, such as ridehailing, ridesharing, and microtransit, can offer fast, reliable connections to and from transit stations. However, there is limited research that evaluates the potential impacts of these projects. Concurrently, there is growing interest in the future of automated vehicles (AVs) and the potential of AVs to solve this first-mile problem by reducing the cost of providing these new mobility services to promote access to transit. This paper expands upon existing research to model the simulate the travel and revenue impacts of a fleet of automated vehicles that provide transit access services in the San Francisco Bay Area offered over a range of fares. The model simulates a fleet of AVs for first-mile transit access at different price points for three different service models (door-to-door ridehailing and ridesharing and meeting point ridesharing services). These service models include home-based drop-off and pick-up for single passenger service (e.g., Uber and Lyft), home-based drop-off and pick-up for multi-passenger service (e.g., microtransit), and meeting point multi-passenger service (e.g., Via).

Abstract:
Albury-Wodonga, situated in Wiradjuri country, sits astride the Murray River and has benefitted in many ways from its almost equidistance from Sydney and Melbourne. It has found strength in the earlier push for decentralisation begun in early 1970s. A number of State and Federal agencies have ensured middle class professionals now call this region home. Light industry is a feature of Wodonga while Albury maintains the traditions and culture of its former life as part of the agricultural squattocracy. Both Local Councils are keen to work cooperatively to ensure the region is an attractive place to live signing an historical partnership agreement. The region’s road, rail, increasing air links and now digital infrastructure, keep it closely connected to events elsewhere. At the same time its distance from the metropolitan centres has meant it has had to ensure that its creative and cultural life has been taken into its own hands. The establishment of the sophisticated Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) as well as the presence of the LibraryMuseum, Hothouse Theatre, Fruit Fly Circus, The Cube, Arts Space and the development of Gateway Island on the Murray River as a cultural hub, as well as the high profile activities of its energetic, entrepreneurial and internationally savvy locals running many small businesses, events and festivals, ensures Albury Wodonga has a creative heart to add to its rural and regional activities.

Abstract:
This research project was a collaboration of several research organizations, product manufacturers and fire service representatives to examine hazards associated with residential flooring systems to improve firefighter safety. Funding for this project was provided through the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grant Program. The main objective of this study was to improve firefighter safety by increasing the level of knowledge on the response of residential flooring systems to fire. Several types (or series) of experiments were conducted and analyzed to expand the body of knowledge on the impact of fire on residential flooring systems. The results of the study have been prepared to provide tactical considerations for the fire service to enable improved decision making on the fire scene. Experiments were conducted to examine several types of floor joists including, dimensional lumber, engineered I-joists, metal plate connected wood trusses, steel C-joists, castellated I-joists and hybrid trusses. Experiments were performed at multiple scales to examine single floor system joists in a laboratory up through a full floor system in an acquired structure. Applied load, ventilation, fuel load, span and protection methods were altered to provide important information about the impact of these variables to structural stability and firefighter safety. There are several tactical considerations that result from this research that firefighters can use immediately to improve their understanding, safety and decision making when sizing up a fire in a one or two family home. This report summarizes the results from each of the experimental series and provides discussion and conclusions of the results.

Abstract:
To achieve the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 7 “Clean and Affordable Energy”, the most economically viable option for servicing the part of the population that is too remote or for which the national grid extension is too expensive are distributed renewable energy solutions (DREs), that is, standalone solar home systems (SHSs), mini grids, and swarm gridsi. By 2030, more than 290 million people could be connected to mini grids. Following a top-down approach to electricity access, countries of the Global South, with support of international aid and development funding, are accelerating their national grid expansion. As the national grid reaches their customers, the private sector (DRE companies) is put at danger of having to either relocate their assets or abandon them. At the same time, the DRE end-user, reached by the national grid, faces several challenges due to being exposed to a double infrastructure. These challenges can be of technical and financial nature and are caused by the assets becoming abundant or needing additional equipment to be suitable for national grid and DREs. In our new paper we investigate a technically and economically viable solution for the co-existence of the national grid−a centralized infrastructure−with mostly decentralized, renewable energy infrastructure in Global South countries. At the intersection of these two electrification pathways the question arises if the two approaches can be integrated to the benefit of society by maintaining existing assets. We assume the technical link to be a bidirectional inverter and a battery representing the point of common coupling (PCC) between national grid and currently off-grid systems. We then suggest to apply a cost recovery approach to calculate the economic value of a community power purchase agreement (C-PPA) that allows the community to enter into a trade agreement with the national grid to export at a specified rate.

Wandeler, Christian, and Steve Hart. The Central Valley Transportation Challenge. Mineta Transportation Institute, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2022.2029.

Full text
Abstract:
The Central Valley Transportation Challenge provides underserved minority students, who are primarily from rural areas, with high quality transportation-related educational experiences so that they learn about transportation-related topics and opportunities in transportation careers. The CVTC is a project-based learning program that brings university faculty and students to K–12 classrooms in rural areas. The project operated with three main objectives: (1) support K–12 teachers’ understanding and implementation of the CVTC programs; (2) connect K–12 students with university faculty and students, and transportation professionals through the CVTC program; and (3) develop an online hub with transportation-related lesson plans and sequences. The results of this study are reported as five case studies and a description of the online hub. The case studies illustrate how different pedagogical approaches and uses of technology were implemented and how the project connections between the schools, community members and professionals from transportation-related fields were developed. In addition, to support the sustainability of transportation-related learning across subsequent years, the research team created an online transportation resource repository. This hub was populated with lessons and units developed by pedagogical and content experts. The lessons cover the grades K–12 and range from brief lessons to very engaging and holistic two-week-long lesson sequences. The CVTC has proven to be a highly flexible and adaptive model due to the use of technology and the teachers’ experience and pedagogical expertise. The timing of the program during the COVID-19 pandemic also provided the students that were learning from home with an engaging learning experience and some relief for teachers who were already dealing with a lot of adjustments. In that sense, the program reached traditionally underserved students, but did so in a critical time where these students faced even more obstacles.
