Biedenbach, Thomas. "Capabilities for frequent innovation : Managing the early project phases in the pharmaceutical R&D process." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Handelshögskolan vid Umeå universitet, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-48634.

Abstract:
Despite their recognized significance for project success and innovation, the management of the early project phases is still an under-researched area in project management. For organizations to secure a continuous stream of innovation, the utilization of capabilities is crucial for managing the early phases of R&D projects. The purpose of this dissertation is to advance the understanding of the management of the early project phases in hypercompetitive environments. The thesis addresses the research question of how organizations manage the early project phases of R&D in hypercompetitive environments for frequent innovation by taking a dynamic capabilities perspective. The first conceptual study reviews the literature covering organizational change in hypercompetitive environments with a focus on projects as the vehicle to create the necessary flexibility. The study found that organizational aspects and capabilities have to go hand in hand as enabler and facilitator for a successful emergent change process. The second qualitative study investigates how organizations organize the early project phases of R&D in the pharmaceutical industry for an outcome of frequent innovation. The findings show that an optimization of combinative capabilities that balances dynamic, project and multi-project capabilities can be used as a powerful leverage to boost the outcome of frequent innovation. The third study investigates the philosophical stances and related methodologies used within the last 15 years of project management research at the example of IRNOP conferences. The findings show that ontological subjectivism and epistemological interpretivism are dominating. Moreover, case studies and qualitative methods were the most common methods, whereas mixed method studies were lacking despite their value for developing an increasingly complex research field. The final mixed method study explores how absorptive, innovative and adaptive capabilities within the early phases of pharmaceutical R&D affect project and portfolio performance. Based on the results of quantitative study, the set of capabilities has an overall effect on the set of performance outcomes and thus confirms the results of the qualitative study that a distinct capability mix is needed in the pharmaceutical R&D process. To conclude, the dissertation has comprehensively explored the management of the early project phases through four studies and by applying a multitude of methodologies.

Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Business Studies, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-8810.

Abstract:

The telecom industry of today is characterised by hypercompetition, convergence and constant change. The market for mobile services is exploding and new actors are continuously entering the market. The rapid advancements and changes in this industry provide companies with business opportunities as well as challenges due to an increasingly complex environment in terms of competition and technology. Porter’s theories encourage companies to choose whether to focus on differentiation, cost-leadership or focus. The more recent theory, the Blue Ocean Strategy, BOS, is however challenging companies to make competition irrelevant. Instead of stealing market share from competitors and compete in “bloody red oceans”, companies should create new untapped market space, “blue oceans”. This theory is highly relevant in hypercompetitive environments such as the mobile industry.

The purpose of this thesis is to create a deeper understanding regarding mobile content providers’ competitive strategies, with focus placed on whether they tend to pursue traditional competitive strategies or blue ocean strategies. The study includes in-depth interviews with the CEOs from five mobile content providers, as well as a questionnaire for visualizing the companies’ strategic profiles illustrated in a strategy canvas.

All companies do have an outspoken differentiation focus, and are cost conscious. The fact that the majority is in expansion phase makes cost reductions less apparent and the slimmed cost structure provides further limitations for cost reductions. They can despite this be defined as pursuing value innovation. Partnerships are an essential part in their competitive strategies in order to seize know-how and technological advantages etc. Competition is seen as something positive which promotes the companies’ own business. The companies all tend to strive for creating blue oceans; some do however include more elements from traditional theories. As a conclusion; the threat of competition can be made less relevant by making them even more relevant in a positive way through partnership etc.

The reform and progress caused by the development of technology and innovation make the old-style industrial boundary blurred. The new business model and disruptive innovation mode even become a model of the new. In addition to the rise of blockchain technology, and the platform business model are fiercely impacting the traditional financial industry. In some regions, the financial industry, which was originally protected by the government and regulated by law, is also open because of Open Banking Directive. The industry has been pushed forward by third-party players. In hypercompetition, how can traditional retail banks respond to the challenges of fintech as the incumbent? How to develop and implement strategies to strengthen its leading position? This study declared that banks should focus on trend inside/outside of company first. Under the construct of Richard A. D’Aveni’ s hypercompetition theory and by using the method of grounded theory, analyzing through within- or cross- case study, giving proposition and reaching closure about incumbent retail banking’s competitive strategy in hypercompetition

With the rapid emergence of new innovation of technology, change of consumer`s preferences, a dramatic change in industrial environment and impact of globalization, it is more difficult for a firm to consolidate the sustainable competitive advantages. Thus, it has led to the appearance of temporary competitive advantages. Nowadays, there are a number of theories that have been devised for this hottest strategic management issue concerning how to obtain and sustain competitive advantages and also various explanations on temporary competitive advantages were given by many scholars. Competitive Advantage theory suggests that a firm can benefit from analysis of industry structure to achieve sustainable competitive position. Resource-based theory puts forward the idea that the possession of particular strategic resources and capabilities enables a firm to generate sustained competitive advantages. Hypercompetition theory contends that in a dynamic competitive environment a firm can easily imitate opponent's position. It also contends that a firm should take a stream of actions to establish a series of temporary advantages and thereby obtain sustainable competitive advantages. Thereafter, dynamic capability theory which argues that a firm is required to coordinate the internal and external resources emerges. However, some scholars reckon that due to the existence of market equilibrium, no firm can exactly predict the market direction. The pattern of firm performance is a random walk, and thereby no firm possesses sustainable competitive advantages. They even emphasize that chance or luck also can bring about the superior performance. Does it mean that any strategy is useless if it is a result of chance or luck? Do sustainable competitive advantages exist? What causes firm performance heterogeneity? We reexamine these issues from organizational learning theory by using 20-year financial data. Our results indicate that the pattern of firm performance is not a random walk. Thus, a firm is able to achieve sustainable competitive advantages by managing well. We also describe the characteristic and competition-level of industry by distribution of transmutative learning ability of firm. We found that a firm in more innovative industry possesses higher transmutative learning ability, which implicates that a firm enables to execute an effective strategy by enhancing a firm transmutative learning ability. Besides, we prove that a firm can increase its probability of sustaining competitive advantages by enhancing its transmutative learning ability.

In the view of hyper-competition, sustainable competitive advantage does not exist, and only by constant innovation in order to obtain a series of short-term competitive advantage. However, business ecosystem could clarify the competition and cooperation relationship between businesses. In this study, qualitative research and case study methodologies are used to find the adoptable mobile payment ecosystem. The third-party payment would fill the trust gap between the parties. Therefore, developing countries should adopt third party mobile payment ecosystem, in order to achieve financial inclusion. The non-third party payment would improve the security of cardholder transactions and reduce the risk of banking. Therefore, developed countries should adopt non-third party mobile payment ecosystem, in order to optimize financial services. The above conclusions can be summarized as two management implications: First, low penetration of financial services tends to develop third-party payment, and high penetration of financial services tends to develop non-third party payment. Second, business co-opetition strategy has the nature of value creation and value capture to achieve win-win situation. Taiwan’s financial service-intensive, customer needs are met, banks, stores can be formed with the third-party payment industry co-opetition relations, the development of a diverse payment methods, and therefore the construction using a single device to provide pluralistic payment function of mobile payment platform, will be suitable for robust development of Taiwan’s mobile payment ecosystem. Suggestions include cross-industry co-opetition, open-minded financial supervision, training financial technology professionals, and strengthen information security.

Transmutation under hypervelocity has significantly collapsed the boundaries among industries. To overcome the “Red-Queen Effect”, dynamic capability is considered to be the major factor for success. Based on resource-based view, dynamic capability associated articles, and the age of temporary advantage, the contrasting conception of dynamic capabilities derived from resources-processes-priorities framework are reconceptualized as a cycle of resources (re)allocation, resources (re)configuration, and comparative advantage to explain how a firm survive in hypercompetitive environment. Corresponding to the dynamic capability structure, the finding reveals that prioritization is embedded in the processes of resources allocation. Organization boundaryless and organizational culture reinforce the resources configuration while relationships enhance comparative advantage. Eventually the paradigm shift impact the sustainability of comparative advantage and disadvantage as well as thoroughly transmuted the competitive landscape.

英文摘要 Data pertaining of the volume of circulation as well as the statistical results obtained for advertisement value both indicate that the China Times and the United Daily News are the two most publicly read newspapers during the past three decades dated back from1965 to 1995. China Times and United Daily News preponderate all other publications through numerous crisis and time change while sustaining of market competition including such time when drastic changes need to be dealt with in facing of fierce competition and the shift in the industrial environment; in short, the two publications prevailed. However the hegemony and supremacy these two publications held over the others were challenged by the swift resurrection and revivification within an old competitor- Liberty Times. The cavalcade of industrial competition initiated by the new and improved Liberty Times manifested in a sweeping transformation of the existing industrial structure; consequentially, the market went from being a spilt into allocates of three. The Liberty Times thereby modified the developmental history of the news industry, and made an epoch in the competition within the traditional news industry. Retracing the tracks of the interaction among the three sides in this war of competitive strategies, the researcher discovered that these aberrational competitive behaviors undoubtedly illustrate the characteristics of a hyper-competitive environment. The most apparent of traits comprised of the rapid frequency of the competitor’s enterprising initiatives, the increasing bold and impetuous measures, the rapid decrement of products’ life span, the intrusion of unexpected competitors into the market, and the renaissance of erstwhile businesses. This research will take the Liberty Times as a paradigm in discoursing the directions in which the competitive strategies of the news industries are heading to brace themselves for the unforeseeable trials in this era of hyper-competitive environment. There are many exemplars, related research and applications of the Hyper- Competition Theory in the high-tech and fast cycle markets; however in the standard cycle markets such as the news industries, there is a dearth of comparable research. Cognizant of this situation, this research attempts to discuss the competitive strategies of the Liberty Times in-depth, interpret the interactive relation between the China Times and the United Daily News, and to take the example of TVBS Weekly challenging the China Times Weekly as a precursor of the manifestation of the era of Hyper-Competition to show that the print media can no longer remain stagnant in this hyperactive environment. From the very beginning, the Liberty Times has been in a campaign with strong financial support as its shield, its success seems to foreshadow that the future competition within the news industries will follow this very same pattern.- the pattern of heavy commercialism and capitalism.

The concept of Innovation recently has been considered important in competition no matter in the sides of marketing, customer service or business management. In order to investigate the factors affect employee innovativeness, we delivered research questionnaires to employees of banks and insurance companies. Totally, 318 effective samples have been collected and run for statistical evaluation. The results of research prove that both supervisor’s trust in subordinate and optimism have influence on innovativeness through the increase of self-efficacy. Moreover, supervisor’s trust in subordinate also influences innovativeness directly. However, although self-efficacy positively related to innovativeness, the effects of knowledge sharing and development competition toward self-efficacy are not significant. Therefore, they cannot influence innovativeness through self-efficacy. In the aspect of moderating effects, we found that both knowledge sharing and optimism can strengthen the positive effect of self-efficacy on hypercompetition, though the moderating effects are not significant on the supervisor’s trust in subordinate and development competition toward self-efficacy. Finally, based on our empirical findings, we expect to offer some practical and theoretical contributions.

This study is the first paper to analyze the strategic changes and growth trends of artificial intelligence across industries under the hypercompetition by using financial performance indicators. The development of artificial intelligence has induced tremendous change and movement of industrial sectors. Many enterprises in different industries around the world have invested in this field and related application. This condition has incurred severe competition and unpredictable change between different industries and made the artificial industry for a “hypercompetitive” environment. When enterprises strike to grow in a competitive environment, enterprises will adjust the use of resources and dynamic capabilities based on changes in external environment and competitors. Therefore, corporate strategies are dynamic and changeable, and the results of the changes will ultimately be reflected in financial performance. Based on the above reasons, this study constructs a research framwork based on DuPont financial indicators. Under hypercompetitive environment, this study analyzes the changes in corporate strategy and performance in artificial intelligence related industries after two periods. Follows are the research objectives of this study: 1. According to DuPont financial indicators, analyze the changes and growth trends of corporate strategies of enterprises with excellent business performance in artificial intelligence related industries in different periods. 2. Using management theory to explain the strategic changes and growth trends of enterprises with excellent business performance in artificial intelligence related industries. This study has revealed that there are obviously strategic changes in the artificial intelligence chip and information technology industries. Some enterprises in these two industries also show growth trends in financial performance, especially the enterprises with excellent business performance. These two industries also play a leading role in leading the development of the whole artificial intelligence industry. This study also proposes suggestions of the development of artificial intelligence in Taiwan enterprises. Wish Taiwan enterprises will be able to find their own niche points in artificial intelligence and enhance Taiwan's overall economic strength and national competitiveness. Most of us believe that innovation is one of the key success factors for enterprises, SMBs, and entrepreneurs and to be their unique identity for cooperate missions and selling point on business. Yet, creativity most importantly comes from talented people, including internal and external sources. The more talented staff a company possesses the better chance of getting a leading position in their particular industry during their growing life cycle. Unfortunately, if a company could not create multiple growth curves over time to support their continuous growth, then its future is uncertain and its business may decline. This thesis addresses how to efficiently embrace external talented people, resources, and most importantly how to create new demand from the existing market. The key point is how to significantly reduce the developing time in order to unleash the potential of market success. Innovation does not need to be generated internally. It can be achieved by alliances with other companies. But the main criteria for finding correct partners is that they have to be either famous or at least influential on their market bases even if their business scale is not so big. Therefore, two or three little giants can join together to design and create a product based on each partner’s strength and capabilities. Also, their business partnership can achieve the best fit condition and everyone can obtain extra benefits from this alliance. The advantage of such a alliance group mode can be conceptualized as what I propose as “Palette Strategy”. There is no precise guideline for this type of cooperation nor certain principles to be followed. It is all about setting goals about what the end product should be and find a business model that fits this alliance group. After all, each party can obtain decent profits from the big pie and sharing mechanisms makes each party feel fair at least at the initial stage. They can both have the right to alter the cooperation mode after their first success. We also discuss the implications and suggestions for applying palette strategy in real world situations.

Hypercompetition Throry was proposed by Richard A D’ Aveni in 1994. At that time, the research of strategy making models was mainly focusing on non-digital industry. The new seven S and strategic triangle model were good for dynamic environment. Web 2.0 is the real example of Hypercompetition Theory. But the theory has been proposed for thirteen years. At that time Richard A D’ Aveni ignored time factors in the model. Therefore, under the environment of internet, this thesis proposes some new thoughts in Hypercompetition. In this research, the main concept is to analyze cases of Yahoo Taiwan and Wretch under the Web 2.0. The sources of datum are opening news from case official web sites, the opening comments on internet, and the reports of the newspapers and magazines. The range of datum is from 1999 to the bottom of 2006. This research analyzes the datum according to the case strategy information as well as applies the industry life cycle proposed in 1994 by Hill and Jones. The emergence of Hypercompetition model under Web2.0 is resulted from the outcome of analysis, and except to gain new parameters that Hypercompetition Theory ignores before. As a result, this study applies the concept of industry life cycle to from a new strategy triangle. The new model shows that the Web 2.0 strategies change over the life cycle. That is the principle strategies of strategic triangle model may change overtime. Finally the research combines other research to get a more general understanding of Hypercompetition models.

This study investigates the influence of a leader who adopts ethical leadership on employees' integrity and the organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). And see if the hypercompetition in the organization will also affect the integrity and employees' organizational citizenship behavior. Further, we examine whether employees' organizational citizenship behavior or integrity will affect their work performance. The research questionnaires are delivered to employees of banks and insurance companies, and totally we have collected 222 samples for further analysis. This study used structural equation modeling to detect the assumptions of this study. According to our research results, we found that there is a significant positive relationship between ethical leadership and organizational citizenship behavior, ethical leadership and integrity. But there is a significant negative relationship between hypercompetition and organizational citizenship behavior interpersonally directed (OCBI). Nevertheless, organizational citizenship behavior and integrity of the employees have positively impact on their work performance. Based on our study, we can found that if leaders can pay more attention to ethical leadership, avoid hypercompetition in the organization, and try to inspire employees to do more organizational citizenship behavior, it will be able to improve the efficiency of the organization.

Technological environments are very complex and dynamic ecosystems influenced by a large number of factors and trends. As a matter of fact, technology constitutes one of the main business drivers on corporate strategies towards growth and financial sustainability and it has been seriously influencing how companies compete and differentiate themselves from each other. Technology and competition became major issues on corporate strategy. The purpose of this case study is to provide a valuable and useful working instrument, enabling readers to develop and extend their skills and capabilities to approach and solve complex business problems within hypercompetitive environments through internationalization expansion approaches. The case study is focused on studying the Portuguese telecommunications industry and the role of internationalization has impact on further growth and sustainability of its operators. It is focused on ZON TV Cabo – the largest triple-play operator in Portugal, with 1.6 million Clients in total. Pay-TV, internet and fixed voice are very well-known solutions within the Portuguese society and they constitute one of the most hypercompetitive business environments. Telecommunications registered many evolutions in terms of challenges and needs that should be responded by operators. In Portugal, the market’s competition became very fierce, especially due to the appearance of new telecommunications’ operators (Telcos) looking to expand into new areas. Organizations should embrace and integrate all of this valuable feedback from Clients and the market itself, so they can keep its profitability indexes and sustainable competitive advantages. The selection and application of the strategic management principles and instruments aim to properly describe and solve the business problems and enhance the students’ learning and expertise at the same time. On the other hand, the case study highlights the importance of innovation, differentiation, creativity and technology for current business environments’ profitability and sustainability.
Os ambientes tecnológicos são, tipicamente, ecossistemas muito complexos e dinâmicos influenciados por um largo número de fatores e tendências. With rapid changes and high competition in technology industries around the globe, Taiwan’s high-tech companies need to seek the momentum of continuous growth in order to promote organizationally innovation and development. The functioning and management of work teams in organizations are very critical, because technology industry heavily adopts the work mode of teams to increase its response and flexibility towards markets. However, inappropriate competition and negative behavior by team members often appear in teaming activities in high-tech firms, consequently reducing team performance. As a result, how to understand these problems in depth and propose effective management strategies have been important issues for managers. Despite the importance of the issues, previous studies have rarely discuss the simultaneous influence of inappropriate competition and negative behavior on team performance, leading to an important research gap. To fill the gap, this study discusses how dysfunctional behavior and hypercompetition influence team performance via the mediation of collective efficacy and work engagement by considering collective identification as a moderator. Empirical analysis is then performed to provide effective management strategies. This research conducted a questionnaire survey to collect data in high-tech industry based on the level of teams. Each team had five participants for the survey, including one team leader and four team members. A total of 118 sets of team-based questionnaires were distributed and 80 of them were collected (including 80 questionnaires from team leaders and 320 from team members). This research used confirmatory factor analysis and hierarchical regression analysis for testing hypotheses. The empirical results found (1) collective efficacy positively relates to team performance; (2) work engagement positively relates to team performance; (3) hypercompetition negatively relates to collective efficacy; (4) dysfunctional behavior negatively relates to work engagement; (5) collective identification moderates the negative relationship between dysfunctional behavior and work engagement; and (6) collective identification moderates the negative relationship between hypercompetition and work engagement. Last, this study provides managerial implications based on research results and suggestions for future research.

Knowledge management plays an important role in today’s business. Knowledge embedded in team members, and members specialize in different domains with different information and knowledge. Each of them knows “who knows what” and can retrieve the knowledge which is called transactive memory. Therefore, teams with effective transactive memory system could have a better knowledge sharing and enhance team performance. Under the perspective of transactive memory theory, this study discusses the relationship among transactive memory, knowledge sharing and team performance. The study examined the mediating effect of transactive memory on the relationship between hypercompetition and knowledge sharing, team EQ and knowledge sharing. Meanwhile, the study examined how transactive memory moderated the relationship between hypercompetition and team performance, team EQ and team performance. 125 teams were collected from financial industry workers and using multiple regression analysis to test hypotheses. The findings indicate the mediating and moderating roles of transactive memory. The results show that knowledge sharing is indirectly and positively related to team EQ via the mediation of transactive memory; the relationship between team EQ and team performance is positively moderated by transactive memory.

By beginning with a background of the heterogeneity of the field of strategic management, and a discussion of the two main schools of thought relating to competitive advantage, this research set out to determine the merit of adopting a simpler, more dynamic conceptual framework for managers to use in assessing firm evolution. Using Robert A. Burgelman’s strategy diamond framework and Taiwanese high-technology firm Innodisk Corporation as the case study, the research investigated the alignment of strategy and competitive advantage in extremely dynamic, or hypercompetitive environments with the aim of offering up further evidence for the framework’s validity and benefit to the field of strategic management. Findings from the case study results provide evidence for the framework’s value in facilitating strategic mindset within an organization. It offers managers a conceptual picture of the relationships between a firm’s stated strategy and strategic action, and between its resource-based competencies and market positioning. In addition, findings demonstrate how specific internal mechanisms of a firm (corporate culture, in the case of our researched firm), can act as a guiding force in aligning strategy and competitive advantage. Finally, the case study findings lend support to the framework’s usefulness in illustrating areas where management can be more vigilant. The results provide support for the application of the strategy diamond framework, and its value as an easy-to-use snapshot of a firm’s desired and actual strategic direction, and its intrinsic and relative strengths. The conclusions suggest that the framework has practical value in steering firm evolution in hypercompetitive, high-technology environments.

This master’s thesis is about a case study of strategic marketing, focused on beer sector in Portugal. It is focused on SCC which operates in a hypercompetitive market. 12 years ago, the beer market was clearly leaded by Super Bock, but notwithstanding, SCC has done a hard work on strategic marketing in order to turn this market concentrated, not only in a 2-player market, but mostly in a 2-brand market. Recently, the beer market in Portugal has been through very difficult times due to the economic situation of the country (in the last 7 years the consumption per capita reduced 14 liters), however, the sector remains attractive for companies that are consolidated and have a sustainable market position. The main conclusion to be drawn from the analysis of this case study is that the SCC should continue to focus on growing the business, allocating resources and expertise in innovation (a key success factor of this market) and on developing new products in order to increase its market share and become market leader. Through exploration of some instruments and frameworks from strategic marketing, this case study has 2 objectives: in one hand, from the strategic analysis, it aims to analyze the beer market and to identify the competitive advantages of SCC comparing to its competitors; on the other hand, from the strategy formulation, it aims to develop a STP analysis (to determine the objectives and strategies connecting the portfolio of SCC to the identified segments) and to define those who are the biggest challenges and recommendations for SCC continue to achieve success in the future in a sustainable way.

Hypercompetitive environment is characterized by highly intensive competition, market structure is often destroyed, and firms difficult to keep sustained competitive advantages. If firms want to constantly occupy the leading position within a market, only through a series of moves to establish series of temporary competitive advantages. This study attempts to explore the change and adjustment of a firm’s organizational learning strategies during the stage of establishment of competitive advantage (or has a leading position in the market) and the stage of competitive advantage was destroyed (or the loss of leading position in the market) while faces the hypercompetitive environment. It takes 376 high-tech firms as sample to empirical analysis, which firms were listed in Tech 100 in Taiwan from Business Next in 2000 to 2013. There are two main study findings. First, according to the change of Tech 100 in Taiwan over the years, the mean value of profitability is decreased year by year. Return on assets fells from 12.8% in 2000 to 4.3 %in 2012. The probability of a firm listed in two consecutive years in Tech 100 in Taiwan is 54%, 34% in three consecutive years, and 17% in five consecutive years respectively. It represents that the intensity of competition faced by firms constantly get rise, and it is difficult to a firm keep the leading position in the hypercompetitive environment. Second, the empirical results show that the abundant of industrial niche resource is partially positively associated with the establishment of a firm’s competitive advantage. Firms focus on exploitative organizational learning strategy in the raising phase of market position to establish and maintain the competitive advantage. And firms focus on explorative organizational learning strategy in losing leading position in the market to cultivate growth opportunity in other fields. The connotation of this study is despite exploitative organizational learning strategy contributes to establish and maintain competitive advantage in a specific field, the effect of exploitative organizational learning strategy probably decrease on maintaining the leading position in the market in hypercompetitive environment. To pursue the long term development, firms should focus on explorative organizational learning strategy.
