Uusi-Hallila, S. (Senni). "Utilizing froth phase behaviour and machine vision to indicate flotation performance." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2014. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201404161276.

Full text
Abstract:
Flotation is one of the most well-known mineral separation methods. In flotation process hydrophobicity of the solids is manipulated in order to separate the valuable minerals from the gangue. It is highly complex process because many simultaneous sub-processes and interactions occur within the system. It is essential to have a good understanding and representation of the flotation phenomena in order to design control strategies. Modern physical froth stability measures have an intrusive nature and therefore they are not practical to provide a continuous online froth stability measurement. Unlike these measures, machine vision is able to measure the key aspects of the froth owing to its non-intrusive nature. Several physical, statistical and dynamical features of froth surface are possible to measure with the machine vision techniques. The objective of this work was to understand the froth phase behavior better which indicates the flotation performance. Literature review of flotation and measurements used in flotation were performed. Image analysis methods were listed and, regarding to the importance of the froth stability, dynamical features of the froth image analysis were investigated more closely. A primary batch flotation test-work was carried out in University of Oulu. The main batch flotation experiments were executed in University of Cape Town with the wide range of operating conditions. Video captures were analyzed with statistical methods and dependencies between FrothSense™ data and concentration data were discovered. Furthermore, PLS model was formed from FrothSense™ data and process measurements in order to predict water recovery, copper grade and copper recovery. Online measurements obtained from FrothSense™ with wide range of operating conditions can be used for soft sensors. Soft sensors can estimate the stability of the froth with the robust predictions.

Sheppard, Paul R., Michael H. Ort, Kirk C. Anderson, et al. "Multiple Dendrochronological Signals Indicate The Eruption Of Parícutin Volcano, Michoacán, Mexico." Tree-Ring Society, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/622588.

Full text
Abstract:
The eruption of Parícutin (1943–1952), a cinder cone volcano in Michoacán, Mexico, caused dendrochronological and dendrochemical responses that might be useful as general dating tools for eruptions. For the eruption period, pines near Parícutin have slightly suppressed ring widths plus high inter-annual variability of width. Wood anatomy changes include traumatic resin ducts and thin bands of false latewood. Dendrochemistry of tree rings shows little temporal variation in most elements, but beginning in 1943 sulfur content increased in rings of four trees and phosphorus content increased in rings of two trees. Hypotheses for increased S and P include new availability of pre-existing soil S and P and/or new input of S and P from the tephra itself. Pines at Parícutin also show suppressed ring widths for five years beginning in 1970, and had the eruption date not been known, the most likely conclusion from ring-width data alone would have been an eruption from 1970 to 1974. However, the 1970s suppression was in response to defoliation by a pine sawfly outbreak, not an eruption. For dendrochronological dating of cinder-cone eruptions, a combination of multiple characteristics (width, chemistry, and anatomy) would be more reliable than depending on any one characteristic alone.

Full text
Abstract:
Publisher version<br>We utilised stable isotope ratios to assess differences in diet among three indigenous and syntopic rocky shore suspension-feeders (mussels Perna perna, barnacles Tetraclita serrata, and polychaetes Gunnarea gaimardi). We also determined the spatial and temporal variability in the suspension-feeder diets by collecting specimens on two occasions from two regions adjacent to hydrologically distinct river mouths (i.e. one with larger annual freshwater throughput than the other). The results showed that the isotopic niches (used as proxies for trophic niches) of the three species did not overlap and that the barnacles occupied a trophic position (3.4) well above those of the mussels (2) and polychaetes (2.6). We ascribed the interspecific differences primarily to the disparate feeding mechanisms used by the species. Large-scale regional (~50 km) differences in suspension-feeder diets were apparent, but not small-scale (up to a few km north and south of each estuary mouth). The regional differences in diet resulted from the increased availability of estuarine-origin suspended particulate matter (SPM) and zooplankton in the region adjacent to the river with relatively larger freshwater output, although overall incorporation of zooplankton versus mixed SPM into consumer diets was relatively consistent between regions and through time. Temporal shifts in suspension-feeder diets were apparent from stable carbon isotope ratios in the consumers. Our results showcase the measurable effects of regional-scale processes that can alter the food sources for dominant primary consumers in the rocky intertidal, thus potentially affecting entire food webs through bottom-up processes. The clear evidence for trophic niche partitioning offers valuable insights into how potentially strong competitors can coexist.

Adhikari, Rajan Deep. "MRI T2 Signal Changes Indicate Tau Pathophysiology in a Murine Alzheimer's Disease Model." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2017. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6944.

Full text
Abstract:
Pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment, the essential domains in medical practice, seem helpless to address Alzheimer's disease (AD). With a huge mortality rate, it is looming and threatening the socioeconomic barrier. Despite many different studies, the pathogenesis of AD remains inconclusive. However, growing numbers of studies suggest oxidative stress to contribute to the initiation and progression of AD. We propose an iron hypothesis: iron mediated oxidative damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS), which induces protective roles of amyloid beta and hyper-phosphorylated tau (HP-tau) to sequester iron and limit the disease. We propose to study such mechanism using transgenic mice models for AD, inducing oxidative stress to elevate intracellular iron, and analyze its co-localization with proteins using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Western blot. We report three primary findings: 1) a significant loss in T2 signal over bilateral hippocampi of transgenic mice compared to the wild types (WT) by three months, corresponding to early disease and the ability of proteins to sequestration iron. Ability of rescue treatments to impede disease progression reflected as preserved T2 signal intensities over these areas throughout our study period of nine months. 2) Concentration of zinc and its dual role in the presence or absence of oxidative stress reflected as loss of 1H NMR T2 measurement showed that higher concentrations of zinc were neuro protective when there was an active oxidative stress inducing condition, but neurotoxic and promote oxidative damage in normal condition. And 3) Different strains of mice, according to their transgene, expressed various proteins associated with AD. However, these expressions were in accordance with our iron-hypothesis.

Fichtler, Esther, Gerhard Helle, and Martin Worbes. "Stable-Carbon Isotope Time Series From Tropical Tree Rings Indicate A Precipitation Signal." Tree-Ring Society, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/622616.

Full text
Abstract:
Although studies on stable-carbon isotopes in trees from temperate zones provide abundant paleoclimatic data, tropical trees are still understudied in this context. Therefore this study examined the variability of intra- and inter-annual stable-carbon isotopic pattern in several tree species from various tropical climates. The 𝛿¹³C values of samples of 12 broadleaved trees (seven species) from various paleotropical and neotropical sites along a climatic moisture gradient were investigated. The inter-annual variability between species and sites was studied. Further the relationship between 𝛿¹³C and precipitation time series was analyzed. Results show that tropical tree species show a similar variability in carbon isotopic composition as temperate tree species. Significant correlations between annual precipitation and tree-ring 𝛿¹³C time series were negative. Successful crossdating of a tree-ring 𝛿¹³C time series highlights the potential of carbon isotope measurements for tropical tree-ring analytical studies. Tropical broadleaved trees are able to capture a carbon isotopic signal in their annual rings even under everwet conditions and show good potential for paleoclimatic research.

Weir, Nicolas U. "The practicality and validity of using outcomes to indicate the quality of stroke care." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30906.

Full text
Abstract:
It would be useful to investigate whether a substantially improved system (one which adjusts comparisons of outcome for important differences in casemix and which measures functional outcome at a defined time after admission) would be routinely feasible and provide valid measurements of the quality of stroke care. We attempted to address these questions in the context of a study of 2724 patients with an acute stroke admitted to five Scottish hospitals between 1995 and 1997. We identified patients using routine hospital discharge information and then identified cases of acute stroke and data describing casemix and the process of care from the medical record. The study suggests that a considerably improved routine system for measuring outcome after stroke is a realistic possibility. Specifically, it suggests that the proposed system for identifying hospital cohorts and collecting casemix data would be reasonably accurate and that the proposed system for measuring functional outcome, although compromised by non-response, would not be seriously biased. Nonetheless, whether these improvements would result in valid measurements of the quality of stroke care remains uncertain. At best, it appears that a system reporting case fatality and death or dependency at six months might be sensitive to moderately late differences in the quality of care. However, there may be alternative explanations for this finding and the system would certainly fail to identify opportunities to improve care at the majority of hospitals. The collection of data describing simple but important aspects of the process of care in addition to outcome might be preferable and should be investigated.
