Sørensen, Eva. Interactive Political Leadership. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198777953.001.0001.

Abstract:
In what this book boldly defines as the age of governance, citizens and other relevant and affected stakeholders are active partakers in governing Western liberal societies. This reality is out of tune with traditional sovereign perceptions of political leadership. Drawing on recent theories of interactive governance and political leadership, Eva Sørensen develops a concept of interactive political leadership that aims to capture what political leadership looks like in a society of active, anti-authoritarian, and politically competent citizens. The key message is that although interactive political leadership is no panacea, it is a step forward in developing a mature perception of what political leadership means in a democratic society with a strong participatory political culture. Hence, interactive political leadership stands out as a promising way of promoting the legitimacy and effectiveness of democratic governance by establishing a bridge between representative democracy and emergent forms of political participation, promoting political learning and accountability, strengthening the political entrepreneurship of elected politicians, and mobilizing relevant resources in society. The book develops twenty propositions that sets the agenda for a new and much-needed field of empirical research into political leadership in the age of governance.

Abstract:
This book of readings is about one specific but vital aspect of Open Distance Learning (ODL): The Role of Learning Interaction in Open & Distance Learning: Issues, Experiences and Practices. In many ways, interaction and interactivity have not received the attention warranted. The learning conditions are quite different for distance learners as compared with the conventional type of learning where face to face (f2f) meeting between students and instructors are common. This may affect learning outcomes significantly in ODL.There needs to be a strong emphasis on the provision of learning interactions as a means of support, which is designed to facilitate learning between the learners and the teachers with the course content. Interaction is a very important component of ODL.Evidently, it has been proven by various research that learning without sufficient interaction possibly could lead the learners to delay their completion of a programme or drop out altogether. In short, ODL without sufficient learning interactions within the primary stakeholders (namely the students and the teachers), will not succeed. The target audience of this book is a wide range of staff either currently on ODL schemes, or about to start. They may be distance teachers, tutors, ODL policy makers, advisers, counselors working directly with distance learners or administrators and managers organising learning support in ODL.

Abstract:
Machine learning is the capacity of a computational system to learn structure from data in order to make predictions on new data. This chapter draws on music, machine learning, and human-computer interaction to elucidate an understanding of machine learning algorithms as creative tools for music and the sonic arts. It motivates a new understanding of learning algorithms as human-computer interfaces: like other interfaces, learning algorithms can be characterized by the ways their affordances intersect with goals of human users. The chapter also argues that the nature of interaction between users and algorithms impacts the usability and usefulness of those algorithms in profound ways. This human-centred view of machine learning motivates a concluding discussion of what it means to employ machine learning as a creative tool.
